Since of Noise: ¡Hola Alex! Antes de nada, quisiera agradecerte esta entrevista para Science of Noise. ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo va la salud de Rhapsody Of Fire?
¡Hola! Estoy muy bien, y gracias por la oportunidad. Todos en Rhapsody Of Fire estamos tremendamente emocionados por la gira que va a empezar y por las actividades futuras que ya estamos preparando.
SoN: Desde que te juntaste con Luca, en 1993, hasta hoy han pasado muchos años y bastantes cosas en Rhapsody Of Fire, hasta el punto de que eres el único miembro fundador que queda en la banda. Más allá de las propias personas que componían Rhapsody, ¿qué es lo que más ha cambiado y qué permanece intacto del espíritu de la banda desde aquellos primeros tiempos?
Siempre creí en el nombre de Rhaposdy of Fire y en la música que este nombre representa. El lineup ha cambiado pero no nuestro acercamiento musical a la fantasía. El espíritu se encuentra en el género fantástico, que es algo que te hace soñar, viajar en el tiempo, te hace experimentar cosas realmente únicas. Cuando parecía que la fantasía había desparecido de las carteleras, la saga de El Señor De Los Anillos fue un tremendo éxito. Esa es la prueba inequívoca de que la fantasía puede captar la atención de diferentes generaciones. Por supuesto, colaborar con Sir Christopher Lee, su voz profunda narrando en los álbumes de Rhapsody Of Fire siempre será algo de lo que esté orgulloso. Cuando escribo para Rhaposdy Of Fire a menudo imagino paisajes de películas y naturales. Nací y crecí en Trieste (Italia), una ciudad preciosa con la que la madre naturaleza ha sido generosa. Tenemos mar, montañas, bosques, lagos, ríos y cuevas. Todos esos elementos naturales siguen siendo mi mayor fuente de inspiración.
SoN: Al final de los 90 y principios de los 2000, Rhapsody Of Fire (entonces Rhapsody) consiguió un éxito enorme y desarrolló un estilo que, sin duda, ha marcado un antes y un después en el heavy metal clásico. ¿Qué recuerdas de aquellos años y cómo evalúas el legado e influencia de la banda?
Desde nuestro primer álbum de estudio, Legendary Tales (1997), hemos trabajado muy duro para conseguir nuestros sueños y completar nuestros deseos y planes musicales: integrar estilos diferentes y muchas influencias en nuestra música era prioridad. Lograr un sonido sinfónico usando instrumentos originales como una flauta dulce barroca (que siempre ha tocado mi hermano Manuel), una orquestra de cuerda, un clavecín, un piano, diferentes tipos de coros o una gran orquesta, fue algo importante en todas nuestras producciones. Todos queríamos y seguimos queriendo mezclar el heavy metal con la magia del Barroco, del Renacimiento, de la música clásica y de las bandas sonoras, por nombrar solo algunas.
Los años que mencionas fueron muy buenos para nosotros. Las ventas de discos eran buenas para muchas bandas en ese periodo, así que nuestra música llegó a muchos fans. Aparentemente hemos influenciado a muchas bandas y músicos, pero no depende de mí decirlo.
SoN: Fabio Lione Vs. Giacomo Voli. ¿Cómo los compararías y cuáles crees que son sus puntos fuertes y débiles? ¿Cómo de difícil ha sido reemplazar la voz de la banda? ¿Qué buscabas en el nuevo cantante? Y, por último, ¿cómo se lo han tomado los fans?
Ambos son grandes cantantes. Giacomo es muy técnico, y creo que desde que estudia y enseña canto, es más capaz de controlar su voz, tanto en estudio como en el escenario. Es importante resaltar que Fabio tuvo 20 años para adaptar y mejorar su técnica vocal a la música compleja que hacemos. No es fácil entrar en el estudio y cantar bien melodías y letras que nunca has oído, por ejemplo.
En 1999, en nuestro primer tour, nadie en la banda era tan bueno en el escenario, tampoco lo era Fabio, pero tras girar durante años y desarrollar la técnica en el estudio, todos mejoramos. Lo que digo es que nada es fácil al principio.
Ahora, Giacomo tiene un rol muy importante y ya ha mostrado su talento increíble en nuestro último trabajo de estudio, llamado Legendary Years (2017), un álbum de regrabaciones que enseña al mundo qué es hoy Rhaposdy Of Fire y que sirve de aperitivo al disco de estudio que lanzaremos. Recientemente también hemos tocado nuestros primeros shows y los fans estaban fascinados con Giacomo.
Desde luego no fue fácil para los fans aceptar que Fabio dejase Rhapsody Of Fire. Para ambos discos, Dark Wings Of Steel (2013) e Into The Legend (2016), intenté que Fabio participase escribiendo todas las letras, involucrándolo en el proceso creativo tanto como fuese posible. Es más, le invité a que escribiese canciones, ideas, melodías y a que se sintiera libre para proponérselas a la banda, pero nunca lo hizo. Hemos cumplido sus expectativas en muchos campos, pero muchas veces, no importa lo que hagas, una relación laboral simplemente no funciona. Fue difícil, sino imposible, seguir con una relación tan poco amistosa.
Vi a Giacomo por primera vez cantando en la televisión y me impresionó tremendamente. Contacté con él personalmente y le pedí que viniera a Trieste para dirigir el Coro Épico en las grabaciones de Into The Legend. Trajo a grandes cantantes. Volvimos a invitarlos para la grabación de Legendary Years. Debo decir que esos coros son los mejores que jamás hayamos grabado.
Giacomo tiene una voz fantástica, la puede modular como él quiera, pasando de voces dulces a gritos secos, y llegar a notas altísimas. Y, aunque actualmente su destreza vocal y su fuerza son evidentes, veo claramente que mejorará aún más con el paso del tiempo.
No es fácil para los fans aceptar y digerir un cambio en la formación como ha sido esta, y lo comprendo totalmente. Por otra parte, el sentimiento de crear nueva música y mirar al futuro con renovado entusiasmo y energía con músicos y personas que se respetan todo el tiempo, es realmente excitante. Entramos en una nueva era y seguiremos creando y trabajando en nueva música porque es lo que nos gusta hacer.
SoN: El año pasado también vimos la partida del batería Alex Holzwarth (que ahora está totalmente centrado en Serious Black) y la llegada de Manu Lotter, que tiene un background mucho más metalcore moderno. ¿Qué diferencias crees que puede aportar su estilo en próximos lanzamientos y en concierto?
Cuando vi el primero video de Manu tocando canciones de Rhapsody Of Fire me impresionó mucho. Creo que su estilo moderno pega mucho con lo que haremos y, además, es un tipo encantador con el que pasar el rato.
SoN: Me temo que no veo demasiadas bandas nuevas de Italia. Pasa lo mismo en España, creo que no sabemos exportarnos bien en un mercado dominado por la Europa del Norte y países de habla inglesa. ¿Estás de acuerdo? ¿Qué crees que le falta a Italia para ser una potencia del heavy metal? ¿Qué bandas italianas nos recomendarías? ¿Por qué crees que fuisteis la excepción que confirmó esta regla, convirtiéndoos en la banda más importante del heavy metal italiano?
España e Italia seguro que tienen un background musical muy potente que no es metalero, así que seguro que se pierden muchos inputs. Pero debo decir que estos días es fácil recibir esos inputs por diferentes vías, así que no sé responder cuáles son las razones por las que músicos Italianos y españoles deberían sentirse en una posición más débil en comparación con los de otros países. Al final, lo más importante es tener una idea original y hacer todo lo necesario para llevarla a cabo.
Dicho esto, no suelo escuchar bandas de heavy metal, así que no sé qué grupos italianos recomendarte. Sobre Rhapsody Of Fire, teníamos el gran deseo de crear música que aún no existiese, no en ese formato. Nos preguntamos, ¿qué tipo de música que aún no existe comprarías? Empezando por ahí, recogimos ideas y elementos que juntos funcionaban, como música barroca y medieval, música de películas, el uso de instrumentos originales, diferentes tipos de coros, grandes melodías, etc. Por supuesto, el uso de muchas capas de sonidos y arreglos orquestales complejos eran clave para presentar un elemento musical totalmente enriquecido.
SoN: Pronto empezaréis un tour eruopeo teloneando a Orden Ogan que, aunque llevan en activo más de veinte años, han alcanzado el éxito en estos últimos tiempos. ¿Cómo os unisteis a esta gira y qué opinas de la banda?
AFM Records propuso a Sebastian «Seeb“ Levermaan para mezclar y masterizar Legendary Years, y nos llevamos bien. La idea de hacer el tour juntos vino algo después. Como dije antes, no suelo escuchar heavy metal, así que no daré ninguna opinión personal sobre Orden Ogan o cualquier otra banda.
SoN: La tercera banda que completa el cartel son los canadienses Unleash The Archers. Tocan una mezcla de power metal y melodeath/metalcore que, personalmente, me encanta. ¿Los has escuchado? ¿Qué opinas de este tipo de fusión, que parecía tabú hace solo unos años?
Los he escuchado muy por encima para saber qué tipo de música hacen. Creo que los estilos innovadores son más que bienvenidos estos días. Tanto para Orden Ogan como para Unleash The Archers, pronto tendré oportunidades suficientes de escucharlos en vivo.
SoN: Hablando sobre eso, el power metal fue tremendamente popular en los 90, pero creo que no vive sus mejores días, al menos a nivel de masas. ¿Qué opinas del estado del género hoy? ¿Qué bandas crees que están destinadas a relanzarlo?
El power metal sigue siendo popular, aunque no tanto como antes. Lo importante es que los fans siguen ahí y están deseosos de asistir a conciertos y comprar o coleccionar CD’s de sus bandas power preferidas. Su amor y apoyo es, sencillamente, fantástico. No es fácil detectar qué banda lo devolverá a la cima, ya que hay demasiados factores a tener en cuenta.
SoN: Sé que quizá sea una pregunta algo incómoda, pero muchos fans esperan la reunión Turilli-Staropoli-Lione. ¿Hay alguna posibilidad de que ocurra? Luca y Fabio se juntaron con los otros miembros de Rhapsody para hacer el tour del aniversario de Legendary Tales que aún seguirá hasta principios de 2018. ¿Por qué no formas parte? ¿Qué sientes en relación a ese tour?
Tu pregunta es legítima y no hay disconfomridad por mi parte. Todo lo que puedo decir es que hubo discusiones y varios intentos de negociación entre Luca Turilli y yo mismo durante varios meses. No nos pusimos de acuerdo en diferentes asuntos y no llegamos a ningún acuerdo que nos hiciera felices a ambos.
SoN: ¿Cuáles son tus planes a corto y medio plazo?
A parte del próximo tour europeo, he estado trabajando en nuevas canciones. De hecho, Roby y yo mismo hemos grabado las guitarras de seis canciones completas y grabamos más ideas en forma de demo. Debo decir que cada canción nueva es fantástica. Tras el tour trabajaré en más material. Esperamos publicar el nuevo álbum de estudio, el primero con Giacomo, para otoño del 2018.
SoN: Si tuvieras que escoger solamente una canción que contenga la esencia de Rhapsody Of Fire, ¿cuál escogerías y por qué?
Escogería «Flames Of Revenge». De hecho, la tocaremos en el tour junto con muchas otras.
SoN: Si pudieras hacer un tour con 4 bandas, siendo Rhapsody Of Fire una de ellas, ¿cuáles escogerías y por qué?
Dejaría que los fans escogieran a quien quieren ver con Rhapsody Of Fire.

SoN: Hi Alex! First of all, I would like to thank you for your time answering these questions for Science of Noise. How are you? How is the health of Rhapsody of Fire these days?
Hi! I am doing great, and thank you for the opportunity! Everybody in Rhapsody Of Fire is extremely excited for the upcoming tour and for all
the future activities we are programming.
SoN: Since you got together with Luca in 1993 until today many years has passed and quite a few changes and turnarounds in the history of Rhapsody of Fire, to the point that today you are the only founding member left in it. Besides the physical line up, what has changed the most and what has remained intact in the spirit of the band since the early demo days?
I always believed in the name Rhapsody Of Fire and in the music that this name represent. Line-up has changed but not our approach to fantasy music.
The spirit is in the fantasy genre which it is something that make you dream, travel in time, it makes you experiencing something really unique. When it seemed that fantasy was almost gone from the theaters, The Lord Of The Rings saga came out, and it was a huge success. That’s the clear proof that fantasy can still catch the attention of different generations. Of course the collaboration with Sir. Christopher Lee, his deep voice performing and narrating in the Rhapsody Of Fire albums is something we will always be proud of. When I write for Rhapsody Of Fire I often imagine movie landscapes and natural scenarios. I was born and raised in Trieste – Italy, a beautiful town where mother nature was really generous. We have sea, mountains, forests, lakes, rivers and caves. All those natural elements are still the greatest source of inspiration and were always strongly radicated in me.
SoN: At the end of the nineties and beginning of the 2000s, Rhapsody of Fire (then Rhapsody) reached a massive success and developed a trademark sound that, undoubtly, has marked a before and after in classic heavy metal. What do you remember of those years and how do you evaluate the legacy and influence of the band?
Since our very first studio album “Legendary Tales” we worked very hard to achieve all our dreams and fulfill our musical desires and plans. To integrate different styles and many influences in our music became the priority. To obtain a symphonic sound using original instruments like the Baroque Recorder (always played by my brother Manuel), or a string ensemble, a cembalo, a piano, to different type of choirs and lately with a big orchestra, became important for every production. All we wanted and still want is to merge heavy metal with the magic of the Baroque, Renaissance, Classical and Film music, just to name a few.
The time frame you mentioned was very good for us. Album sales were good for many bands in that period, so also our music reached the most number of metal fans. Apparently we have influenced a lot of bands and musicians but it’s not up to me to say it.
SoN: Fabio Lione vs Giacomo Voli: how would you compare them and what do you think are the strongest and weakest points of each of the singers? How difficult has it been to replace the voice of the band? What were you looking for when searching for a new singer? How has the change been received by the fans so far?
Both singers are very good. Giacomo is pretty technical, and I believe, that since he studies and teaches singing, he is more keen to have more control of his voice, in studio and on stage. It is important to mention that Fabio had 20 years to adapt and improve his vocals to the complex music that we do. It is not easy to enter the studio and sing at best never heard melodies and never read lyrics for example.In 1999, on the very first tour, no one in the band was that good on stage, including Fabio, but after touring for years and developing skills in the recording studio, we all grew up. All I am saying is that nothing came easy at first.
Giacomo have a very important role now and he already showed his incredible talent in our last studio album called “Legendary Years”, an album of re-recordings that shows to the world what Rhapsody Of Fire are today and works as an appetizer before the new epic studio album will be released. We also played our first shows recently and the crowd was simply amazed by Giacomo’s performance.
Surely it was not easy for the band and the fans to accept Fabio leaving Rhapsody Of Fire. For both studio albums, “Dark Wings Of Steel” and “Into The Legend”, I have made some important changes and improvements inviting Fabio to write all the album’s lyrics, involving him in the creative process as much as possible. Moreover, I also have invited him to write songs, ideas, melodies and to feel free to propose them to the band, but he never did. We have meet many of his expectations in different fields, but sometimes no matter what you do, a working relationship simply cannot work. It was difficult if not impossible to go on with that misery of an unfriendly relationship.
I saw Giacomo for the first time while he was performing on a national TV and I was absolutely impressed. I contacted him personally and asked him to join me in Trieste to lead the Epic Choir recordings for the “Into The Legend” production. He brought in some great singers. We invited them all again also for the “Legendary Years” production. I must say those Epic choirs are the best we ever did.
Giacomo has a fantastic voice, he can modulate it the way he wants, passing from sweet vocals to rough screams and incredibly high pitch notes. Despite his actual vocal skills and force of nature, I clearly see that he will improve even further in the future.
It is not easy for any fan to accept and digest a line-up change like that, and I fully understand it. On the other hand, the feeling of creating new music and looking into the future with renewed enthusiasm and energy with musicians and person that respects each other at all time, it is very very exciting. We entered a new era and we will go on creating and working on new music because that’s what we like to do.
SoN: Last year we also saw the departure of the drummer Alex Holzwarth (which is now fully centered in Serious Black) and the arrival of Manu Lotter, who has a much more modern metalcore background. What differences do you think his style might have in future releases of the band and in its live performances?
When I’ve got Manu first video of him performing Rhapsody Of Fire’s songs I was Impressed. I believe that his modern works perfectly for our future songs and he is a very cool guy to spend time with.
SoN: I am afraid that I don’t see a lot of bands coming from Italy lately (or ever, actually). In a similar way that happens with Spain, I think we don’t know very well how to export ourselves in a market mostly dominated by Northern Europe and english-speaking countries. Do you agree? What do you think Italy is missing to become a more solid metal stronghold? What bands coming out from Italy would you reccommend to us? Why do you think you were the exception of this rule, becoming the top metal italian band ever?
Spain and Italy have surely a strong musical background that is not metal so probably a certain amount of inputs is missing. But I must say that these days it’s easy to receive those inputs in different ways, so I can’t see actual reasons why Spanish and Italian musicians should feel in a weaker position compared to other countries. At the end the most important thing is to have an original idea and do everything to accomplish it.
Said that, I do not listen to heavy metal bands that often, so I don’t know what Italian bands to advice. Regarding Rhapsody Of Fire, we had a strong desire to create music that did not existed yet, not surely in that form. We asked our self “what kind of music we would like to actually buy that simply still do not exists yet?”. Starting from there, we collected ideas and elements that would have worked really well together, such Baroque and Medieval music, Film music, the use of real original instruments, different kind of choirs, big melodies and so on. Of course also the use of multiple layers of sounds and complex orchestral arrangements was one of the keys to present a musical element that enriched even more the final result.
SoN: You are soon gonna start an european tour supporting Orden Ogan. Even though they have been around for more than twenty years, they have just been successful for the last few. How did you get the chance to join this tour and what do you think of the band?
AFM Records proposed me Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann to mix and master “Legendary Years”, we got along pretty well. The idea of touring together came a bit later. As I said before, I do not normally listen to heavy metal so I won’t give any personal opinion about Orden Ogan or any other band.
SoN: The other band that is coming on this tour are the canadians Unleash the Archers. They play a mix between power metal and melodeath / metalcore that I specially love. Have you listened to them? What do you think about them and these kind of fusions (which seemed taboo just a few years ago)?
I have listened quickly just to realize what kind of music they do. I believe that innovative styles are more than welcome these days. For both, Orden Ogan and Unleash the Archers, I will have the chance to listen them live soon.
SoN: Talking about it, power metal was a massively popular style in the nineties, but I believe now it is not living its best days amongst the masses. What do you think of the state of the genre today? Which are the bands that you think are destined to push it back on top?
Power metal is still popular even if not as before. The important thing is that the fans are still strong and still want to enjoy shows and buy or collect cd’s from their favorite power metal bands. Their love and support it’s simply fantastic. It’s not easy to detect what band is going back to the top or not these days since there are multiple factors.
SoN: I guess that might be an uncomfortable question, but most fans are actually looking forward an eventual reunion Turilli / Staropoli / Lione. What is the chance of it happening? Luca and Fabio got together along with other Rhapsody members to do a «Legendary Tales» anniversary tour which is still going on until the beginning of 2018. Why aren’t you part of it? How do you feel about that tour?
Your question is legit and there is no discomfort from my side. All I can say is that there were discussions and various attempts of negotiations in these regards between Luca Turilli and myself for several months. We did not agree on different levels so we could not accomplish the results that would have made the both of us happy.
SoN: What are your short and medium term plans?
Beside the upcoming European tour I have been working on new songs. Actually, Roby and myself recorded six complete songs worth of guitars and more ideas were recorded as a demo version as well. I must say that every new song it’s fantastic. After the tour I will go on working on more material. I expect the new studio album, the first with Giacomo, to be released in fall 2018.
SoN: If you had to choose a single song that contains the escence of Rhapsody of Fire more than any other else, which one would you choose and why?
I would choose Flames Of Revenge, in fact, we will play this song and many other ones in the upcoming European tour.
SoN: If you could put up a tour with four bands, being Rhapsody of Fire one of them, which ones would you choose and why?
I would let the metal fans to decide what other bands they would enjoy to see beside Rhapsody Of Fire.
