Los británicos Inglorious son una de esas bandas que, aparentemente surgidas de la nada, han llegado para comerse el mundo y ocupar el trono del hard rock más clásico procedente de las Islas Británicas. Con sus orígenes en el éxito que su vocalista Nathan James cosechó en la versión inglesa de «La Voz», Inglorious no se han dormido en los laureles y no han parado de sacar discos y de girar desde el minuto uno. Y precisamente una de esas giras es la que, hoy y mañana mismo, les tendrán descargando su hard rock bluesero y sudoroso en Barcelona y en Bilbao. Hablamos con Andreas Eriksson, guitarrista de la banda.
SofN: ¡Hola Andreas! Antes que nada, muchas gracias por dedicar algo de tu tiempo a contestar estas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Cómo estás?
Ningún problema, ¡gracias por invitarme!
SofN: Hablemos un poco de vuestro álbum más reciente, llamado II y publicado este año. ¿Es éste el primero de vuestros homenajes a Led Zeppelin? ¿Vuestros próximos discos se van a llamar III, IV, etc.?
Bueno, aún no sabemos cómo se va a llamar nuestro próximo disco, pero está claro que no sería muy sorprendente que se llamara III (risas). Creo que es obvio que estamos influenciados por Led Zeppelin, entre otras muchas grandes bandas, aunque personalmente pienso que nuestro primer disco, I, tiene un rollo más Zeppelin que éste.
SofN: ¿Cuáles son las principales diferencias entre II y I, tanto a nivel musical como en el espíritu y ambiciones alrededor de la banda en el momento de su composición y grabación?
Yo lo siento como una progresión natural de la banda. II tiene el sonido y la energía característicos de Inglorious al igual que lo tenía I, pero quizá suena más grande, más poderoso, con canciones más potentes. La ambición era sencillamente hacer un disco aún mejor, escribir mejores canciones e, imagino, intentar mejorar a todos los niveles. Lo grabamos de forma similar, en directo, aunque esta vez fue en un estudio distinto (Parr Street en Liverpool)
SofN: ¿Qué canciones de este disco crees que pueden convertirse en clásicos que vayan a permanecer en los setlists de Inglorious durante años?
«I Don’t Need Your Loving» es una canción que creo que vamos a tocar siempre. Define muy bien lo que es Inglorious y, además, en directo funciona fantásticamente. «Making Me Pray» es otra de mis favoritas, y creo que durará muchos años.
SofN: Habéis publicado vuestros dos primeros discos en tan solo dos años, de manera similar a lo que esas bandas que os sirven de influencia solían hacer en los setenta. ¿Es éste otro guiño al pasado? ¿Debemos esperar nuevo material por vuestra parte ya el año que viene?
Sencillamente nos encanta la música, nos encanta componer, tocar y estar en el estudio y de gira. Si nos acompaña la inspiración y tenemos tiempo pienso que no es difícil que así sea, no.
SofN: Inglorious parece ser exactamente lo que la escena hard rock clásica británica necesitaba, ya que los fans os han abrazado con pasión. Dejando de lado vuestra calidad y vuestro mojo, creéis que habéis llenado un hueco en el mercado británico? ¿Qué otras bandas jóvenes de hard rock británicas nos recomendarías?
Hay muchas grandes bandas en Reino Unido. The Wayward Sons son geniales, ¡escúchalos! Creo que la escena rockera está resurgiendo, eso seguro, lo hemos podido ver en la gran gira que acabamos de hacer por Inglaterra.
SofN: El año pasado vinisteis a España como teloneros de The Winery Dogs, un súper grupo formado por tres monstruos como Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan y Mike Portnoy. ¿Cómo tuvisteis la oportunidad de participar en ese tour? ¿Cómo fue el recibimiento del público? ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre la experiencia de compartir la carretera con esas leyendas?
Fue una gira fantástica, especialmente porque Richie es uno de mis mayores héroes, y Billy también lo es para Colin (ndr. Parkinson, bajista de Inglorious). Fue algo extraño porque la oportunidad nos llegó incluso antes de que nuestro álbum de debut fuera publicado. Por supuesto, no tuvimos ninguna duda en decir que sí, pero fue sorprendente lo bien que acabó yendo. Tuvimos una gran respuesta y el público estuvo genial, gritando y haciendo ruido cada noche. Un ejercicio de humildad y una gira grandiosa que nos ha ayudado mucho a construir una base muy sólida para la banda.
SofN: También tocasteis en el Azkena Rock Festival, nuestra particular meca del rock clásico. ¿Cómo fue vuestra experiencia? ¿Tuvisteis la oportunidad de ver otras bandas y el ambiente del sitio?
Fue un gran festival, sí, y pudimos ver un par de bandas, entre ellas Thunder, ¡que sonaron genial!
SofN: Ahora volvéis encabezando vuestra propia gira por primera vez, con paradas en Barcelona y Bilbao. El otoño ha estado repleto de grandes conciertos de hard rock y metal. ¿Qué les dirías a aquellos fans que aún dudan si venir o no a vuestros conciertos para que no se queden en casa? ¿Qué crees que es lo más destacado de las actuaciones en directo de Inglorious?
Nunca es fácil hablar de uno mismo y de tu propia banda, pero todo lo que puedo decir es que, por encima de todo, Inglorious es una banda de directo.
SofN: Si tuvieras que escoger una sola canción de Inglorious para introducir a la banda a gente que no os conoce, ¿cuál sería y por qué?
Debo decir «I Don’t Need Your Loving». Como he comentado antes, creo que define muy bien lo que significa Inglorious.

SofN: Hi, Andreas! First of all, thanks for dedicating some time to answer these questions for Science of Noise. How are you?

SofN: Let’s talk a bit about your newest album: called II, published earlier this year. Is this a bit of a Led Zeppelin homage? Will we be seeing your further releases being called III, IV and so on?
Haha, well we don’t know what the next album is gonna be called yet but it wouldn’t be too confound to think that it might be called III. I think it’s obvious that we are influenced by Zeppelin amongst other great bands but to me personally I think our first album I has more of a «Zepp» vibe to it.
SofN: What are the main changes between II and I, both in the music itself and in the spirit and ambitions surrounding the band?
To me it just feels like a natural progression of the band. I mean II has the Inglorious sound and the energy as well as I but perhaps a bit of a bigger sound to it, bigger songs. The ambition was just to make an even better album, write better songs and I guess try to improve on all the levels. We recorded it similarly, live that is, even though it was in a different studio (Parr Street in Liverpool).
SofN: What songs from this album do you feel that can become true Inglorious classics to remain in your setlists for years to come?
«I Don’t Need Your Loving» is a song that I think we’ll play for ever. It very much defines Inglorious and it works so great live. «Making Me Pay» is another personal favorite that I think will last forever.
SofN: You released your two first albums in just two years, like those bands that influenced you used to do in the good ol’ seventies. Are you making a point with it? Are we to expect new music from Inglorious already next year?
We just love music, love to write, play and being in the studio as well as on tour. If it’s there, inspiration, time etc it’s not difficult to do so yeah, I think so.
SofN: Inglorious seem to have been exactly what the classic hard rock British scene needed, as you have been passionately embraced by the fans. Besides your obvious quality and mojo, do you feel like you had filled a gap in the British market? What other young British hard rock bands would you recommend us?
There are a lot of great bands in the UK, The Wayword Sons is a great band, check them out! It feels like the rock scene is resurfacing for sure, we just had a great tour round the UK.
SofN: Last year you already came to Spain supporting The Winery Dogs, a super group made out of three monsters like Richie Kotzen, Billy Sheehan and Mike Portnoy. How did you get the chance to be part of that tour? How did it go and how was your band received by the crowd? How was it to share the road with those guys?
It was a fantastic tour, especially since Richie is one of my absolute biggest heroes as Billy is for Colin. It was weird cause we got the opportunity before the debut album was even released, obviously a no-brainier to do it but it was surprising how well it worked out, we had great response and the crowds were so great, cheering, loud and amazing every night. Very humbling experience, a great tour that really helped us set a solid foundation for the band.
SofN: You also played in the Azkena Rock Festival, our particular mecca of classic rock. How was your experience there? Did you get the chance to see some other bands and the ambience of the place?
That was a great festival and yes we saw a couple of bands, Thunder if I’m not mistaking who sounded great!
SofN: Now you are coming again as a headliners for the first time, with shows in Barcelona and Bilbao. The autumn has been packed with good hard rock and metal shows in those cities. What would you say to convince the fans that are still doubting about coming to your show? What do you think stands out from Inglorious live performances?
It’s never easy to talk about yourself or your band you know but all I can say is that we are a live band.
SofN: If you had to choose a single song from Inglorious to introduce the band to people that doesn’t know you. Which one would it be and why?
I must say «I Don’t Need Your Loving». As I said before, very much defines what Inglorious is about.

Siempre me ha encantado escribir y siempre me ha encantado el rock, el metal y muchos más estilos. De hecho, me gustan tantos estilos y tantas bandas que he llegado a pensar que he perdido completamente el criterio, pero es que hay tanta buena música ahí fuera que es imposible no seguirse sorprendiendo día a día.
