Esta semana los siempre energéticos, divertidos y motivantes Nashville Pussy estan de gira por la Península, donde darán hasta seis conciertos, acabando este periplo en Barcelona. La banda liderada por Blaine Cartwright y Ruyter Suys continúa ignorando absolutamente las modas y sigue fiel a su hard rock fiestero para llenar de sudor cualquier sala grande o pequeña que se les ponga por delante. Hablamos con Blaine para que nos cuente en qué lugar se encuentra esta mítica banda a día de hoy.
SofN: ¡Hola, Blaine! Muchas gracias por dedicarle algo de tu tiempo a contestar estas preguntas. ¿Cómo estás?
¡Hola! ¡Todo va extra bien!
SofN: Lo último que habéis publicado es la compilación Ten Years Of Pussy, en 2016. ¿Es a propósito que haya salido al mercado diez años después de vuestro último disco en directo? ¿Por qué sentísteis la necesidad de lanzar una compilación precisamente en este momento? ¿Qué quisísteis representar con ella?
Quisimos poner la atención de la gente de nuevo en el contenido de nuestros tres últimos discos. Creo que es una compilación divertida y que suena muy festiva.
SofN: Vuestro último disco de estudio por el momento es Up The Dosage, publicado en 2014. ¿Estáis planeando ya algo nuevo? ¿Cuándo podemos esperar un nuevo disco de Nashville Pussy? ¿Qué podremos encontrar de especial en él?
Acabamos de grabar un nuevo disco con el productor de Ramones, Daniel Rey. Es realmente bueno. Lo estamos mezclando ahora mismo. Hay dos canciones sobre Lemmy. ¡El disco es casi perfecto!
SofN: Aunque habéis tenido una carrera exitosa y sois una banda bastante conocida, queriéndolo o no os habéis mantenido básicamente en el underground. De una forma u otra, supongo que vuestra música y actitud le pega más a una sala pequeña y sudorosa que a un estadio. ¿Cómo veis vuestra carrera retrospectivamente?
Siempre hemos intentado ser todo lo exitosos que hemos podido siendo nosotros mismos. La verdad es que nos preguntan esto a menudo, y personalmente creo que hemos dado algunos de nuestros mejores shows en sitios grandes. Algunos festivales en los que ha asistido un montón de público han sido geniales.
SofN: ¿Cuáles crees que han sido las decisiones más y menos acertadas que habéis tomado nunca como banda?
La peor decisión que esta banda (o cualquier otra) puede tomar es apalancarse, relajarse y tomárselo con calma. Entonces las cosas empiezan a desmoronarse. Por el contrario, la mejor decisión que cualquier banda puede tomar es agarrar la guitarra y ponerse a componer unas cuantas malditas canciones. Ponerse las pilas y volver a patear culos. Y eso es lo que hemos hecho recientemente. En lo referente a decisiones relacionadas con el negocio, hemos cometido errores pero hemos aprendido de ellos. ¡No dejes que el mismo perro te muerda dos veces!
SofN: Sóis conocidos por ser una banda muy fiestera. ¿Qué es lo más loco que recuerdas que os haya pasado estando de gira? (y si ocurrió estando en España, mejor que mejor)
Wow, si la gente en España opina que nosotros somos especialmente fiesteros, quizás es tiempo para apuntarnos a rehabilitación. Tenemos una canción en el nuevo disco que dice «Spent all my time chasing fun / but I don’t remember much of it now that it’s done» («Gasté todo mi tiempo persiguiendo la diversión / pero no recuerdo mucho una vez la encontré«). ¡El otro día agarré una botella de agua en vez de Jack Daniel’s para beber sobre el escenario, y la gente se puso a abuchearme!
SofN: ¿Seguís viviendo el «sexo, drogas y rock ‘n’ roll» al máximo cuando estáis de gira o con el tiempo os habéis calmado un poco?
Ya no solemos salir mucho después de los conciertos, y sobretodo nos gusta pasar el rato con amigos tomando algo. Ya no le damos a las drogas como antes, pero la bebida está fuera de control.
SofN: El estilo de rock n’roll energético que os define era popular cuándo empezásteis, con bandas como Supersuckers o la escena escandinava con bandas como Backyard Babies, Gluecifer y muchas más, pero ahora no parece haber muchos grupos de éxito abrazando ese género. ¿Qué opinas? ¿Por qué crees que ocurre eso? ¿Hay alguna banda nueva que creas importante recomendar?

SofN: Ruyter (ndr. Ruyter Suys, guitarrista de Nashville Pussy y esposa de Blaine) está considerada una de las mejores guitarras solistas femeninas que hay, no solo por sus capacidades técnicas sino también por su explosiva presencia en directo. Quizás es difícil que lo digas tú, pero… ¿estás de acuerdo? ¿Qué otras guitarristas te gustan? ¿Cómo crees que ha evolucionado la escena rockera a la hora de incluir más y más chicas?
Ruyter es la mejor guitarrista femenina que ha habido, y también una de las mejores sobre el escenario. Hay otras buenas por ahí, pero en general, si vemos a una chica con una guitarra, no es buena señal. Pero es cierto que hay más mujeres tocando ahora. De hecho, cuando Corey (ndr. Corey Parks, la bajista original de la banda) se fue solo encontramos a una chica capaz de reemplazarla, y ahora podemos escoger de entre una larga lista. Y Bonnie (ndr. Bonnie Buitrago, la actual bajista), por cierto, es la mejor de las que hemos tenido hasta ahora.
SofN: ¿Cómo os funciona esto de tener a tu mujer en la banda? Pasáis un montón de tiempo juntos, lo que puede poner mucho estrés en una relación. ¿Os peleáis mucho? ¿Tenéis algun tipo de truco o reglas para que todo funcione bien?
Nos peleamos sobre algunas decisiones creativas, y ocasionalmente sobre cosas más de negocio. La verdad es que no me gusta pelearme, prefiero guardarme la energía para los conciertos.
SofN: Ruyter y tú habéis sido los únicos miembros constantes de la banda, y a lo largo de los años siempre habéis contado con un chico batería y una chica bajista. ¿Es una especie de política de la banda? Si es así, ¿por qué? ¿Qué nos puedes contar de los ocupantes actuales de la sección rítmica de la banda?
Lo de los dos chicas / dos chicos fue un feliz accidente al principio. Funciona, así que lo hemos dejado así. En la actualidad tenemos a Bonnie Buitrago al bajo. La conocimos cuando era una niña hace veinte años. A la batería está Ben Thomas. Es un tío bastante increíble, nos lo encontramos segando nuestro césped. Precisamente hoy cumple 30 años.
SofN: Estáis ya embarcados en una larga gira europea, que en este caso tendrá hasta seis fechas en España, casi más que cualquier otro país europeo. Siempre habéis tocado bastante por aquí. ¿Crees que hay una respuesta particularmente buena?
Amamos España, joder. De hecho nos quedaremos unos días de vacaciones en Barcelona después de la gira.
SofN: Precisamente la última noche de la gira es en Barcelona, que es, por cierto, dónde os vamos a ver desde Science of Noise. ¿Podemos esperar que ese concierto se convierta en una fiesta aún más grande que las demás?

SofN: Si tuvieras que escoger una sola canción de Nashville Pussy para introducir a la banda a alguien que no os conozca, ¿cuál sería?
«We Want A War». Es nueva y quizás es nuestra mejor canción hasta el momento.
SofN: Si pudieras diseñar una gira con cuatro bandas y que una de ellas sea Nashville Pussy, ¿cuáles escogerías y por qué?
Rolling Stones, AC/DC y Status Quo. Porque ya hemos tocado con Motörhead, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd o Slayer.

SofN: Hello Blaine! Thank you very much for dedicating some time to answer these questions for us. How are you going these days?
Hello. Things are going extra great these days.
SofN: Your last release was the compilation Ten Years of Pussy. Is it on purpose that it was ten years after your previous live album? Why did you feel the need to release a compilation just at that moment? What did you want to represent with it?
We wanted to draw new attention to the last three records. It’s a really fun compilation. Sounds like a great party record.
SofN: And your last studio album is Up The Dosage, which was released in 2014. Are you already planning some new music? When are we to expect the next record from Nashville Pussy? What will be special about it?
We just recorded a new album with Ramones producer Daniel Rey. It’s so good. We are currently mixing it. There are two songs about Lemmy on there. The album is damn near perfect!
SofN: Even though you have had quite a successful career and you are definitely well known, you have kept yourselves, willingly or not, largely in the underground. Your music and attitude definitely suits better a sweaty small club than an arena. How do you see your career in retrospective?
We’ve always tried to be as successful as possible and still be ourselves. We honestly get asked that question quite a lot. I personally think we put on some of our best shows in bigger places. Some of the festival shows in front of huge crowds have been great.
SofN: What do you think have been the best and worse decisions you have taken as a band?
The worst decision this band, or any band makes, is when you decide to coast and kick back and take it easy. Things start falling apart. The best decision a band can make is to pick up the guitar and write some damn songs. Get together and jam. Get your head back in the game. We did that recently.
As far as business decisions, we made mistakes but we learned from them. Don’t let the same dog bite you twice!
SofN: You’re renowned as being big party animals! What’s the craziest thing you remember that happened to you while on tour? (or at least one of them, and if it happened in Spain, even better!)
Wow, when people in Spain are calling US party animals, maybe it’s time for rehab. We’ve got a song on the new album that says «Spent all my time chasing fun, But I don’t remember much of it now that it’s done».The other night onstage I grabbed water to drink instead of Jack Daniel’s and people booed!
SofN: Are you still living the sex, drugs and rock’n’roll lifestyle to the max while on the road or you have slowed down a little bit with the time?
We really don’t go out after the show anymore. We mostly hang out with close friends and drink. The drugs have slowed way down. The drinking is out of hand.
SofN: The high energy brand of rock n roll was popular when you started, with bands like Supersuckers or the whole scandinavian scene with Backyard Babies, Gluecifer and many more, but now there doesn’t seem the be so many new bands embracing this style. What do you think about it? Why do you think it is so? Is there any new band that you think it is worth recommending?

SofN: Ruyter is considered one of the greatest female lead guitarists there is out there, not only for her technique but also for her explosive live performances. Maybe it is difficult to say it yourself, but… do you agree? What other female guitarists do you love? How do you think the rock n roll scene has evolved in terms of embracing more and more girls in?
She’s the best female guitar player ever. One of the best performers too. There’s other good female guitarists out there. But in general if we see a girl with a guitar, it’s not good news. There’s definitely more women playing though. When Corey quit we only knew of one girl who could replace her. Now we can choose from a long list of them. Bonnie‘s the best player yet.
SofN: How does it work out having your wife in the band? I mean, you spend a lot of time together, which can be such a strain in a relationship. Do you fight a lot? 😀 Do you have special tricks or rules to keep it working well?
We fight over some creative issues and occasionally over business stuff. But don’t fight about much else. I don’t like fighting. We save the energy for our show.
SofN: Ruyter and you have been the only constant members of the band, and along the years you have always had a male drummer and a female bassist. Is that on policy? If so, why? What can you tell us about the current holders of the rhythm section of the band?
The 2 girls 2 guys line up was a happy accident at first. It works. So we just kept it like that. Our current line has Bonnie Buitrago on bass. We met her when she was a kid 20 years ago. On drums is Ben Thomas. He’s quite amazing. We found him mowing our lawn. He’s turning 30 today.
SofN: You are already embarked in a long european tour, which will have up to six dates in Spain, almost more than any other european country. You have always played quite a lot here. Do you feel a particularly good response here?
We fucking love Spain. We’re all hanging in Barcelona at the end of the tour.
SofN: The last night of the tour will be in Barcelona, which is where we will actually see you. Are we to expect a bigger party than anywhere else in that show?
We provide the entertainment. You guys provide the party.
SofN: If you had to choose a single song from Nashville Pussy to introduce the band to people that doesn’t know much about you, which one would it be?
«We Want A War» it’s new. Maybe the best one yet.
SofN: If you could put up a tour line up with any four bands, being Nashville Pussy one of them, which ones would you choose and why?
Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Status Quo. We already played with Motörhead, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Slayer.
