Los americanos A Sound Of Thunder son una de las últimas sensaciones que se han vivido por tierras catalanas gracias a su versión metalera de «Els Segadors», que los ha catapultado a la primera línea mediática por unos días y los ha puesto en boca y en oreja de catalanes más o menos apreciativos del heavy metal. Hablamos con su vocalista Nina Osegueda para que nos cuente que hay tras esta versión y nos explique qué más podemos esperar de su banda. A Sound Of Thunder aprovecharán el tirón para hacer una pequeña gira por tierras catalanas a principios de diciembre, con paradas en Barcelona, Terrassa, Tarragona, La Bisbal de l’Empordà y La Pobla de Segur.
SoN: ¡Hola, Nina! Antes que nada, me gustaría darte las gracias por dedicar unos minutos a contestar estas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Cómo estás?
¡Estoy muy bien, gracias!
SoN: Os habéis convertido en una pequeña sensación por aquí gracias a vuestra versión de «Els Segadors», el himno catalán, y por supuesto hablaremos de ello en un rato. Pero, antes que nada, háblanos un poco de A Sound Of Thunder: ¿Quiénes sóis? ¿Qué os define como banda? ¿Cuáles son vuestras influencias?
A Sound of Thunder es una banda de heavy metal. Josh y Chris, guitarra y batería respectivamente, empezaron con esta idea, y yo me uní en 2009. Jesse, el bajista, entró en 2010, y desde entonces que estamos juntos. Nuestras influencias varían en cada uno de nuestros componentes, pero creo que algunas de las bandas que tenemos en común son Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rush y Dio.
SoN: Aunque muchos no os conocíamos antes, no sóis en absoluto unos novatos. Hace casi diez años que existís como banda y en breve váis a publicar vuestro séptimo álbum de estudio. ¿Cómo de grandes sóis en vuestra área y en Estados Unidos en general? ¿Habéis girado por vuestro país y por el extranjero? ¿Habéis teloneado a bandas conocidas?
Sí, hemos girado por Estados Unidos y también por Canadá. Hemos tocado en ciudades tan lejanas de aquí como Portland, Austin y Montreal. En nuestra área, hemos abierto para bandas como Accept, Sabaton, Hammerfall, UDO, Doro, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody Of Fire y Firewind.
SoN: He estado escuchando algo de vuestra discografía anterior y lo que veo es una banda de heavy metal clásico con un sonido muy moderno y poderoso, una mezcla que me gusta bastante. ¿Qué podemos esperar de «It Was Metal», vuestro próximo disco? ¿Vais a introducir algunos cambios respecto a trabajos anteriores?
El nuevo disco va a ser definitivamente un poco más rápido que nuestros últimos trabajos. Hemos intentado meterle un extra de energía, de manera que habrá algo menos de influencia doom que en los dos álbumes anteriores.
SoN: Vamos a por ello pues: Por lo que he leído, tienes ascendencia catalana, ¿verdad? ¿Cuándo se mudó tu familia a Estados Unidos? ¿Has estado en Cataluña personalmente?
Sí, he estado muchas veces. Mi madre vino a Estados Unidos a principios de los setenta, pero ella es la única que está aquí. Tengo tres tíos, mi abuelo y primos aún viviendo en Cataluña, y vamos a visitarlos cada pocos años. El año pasado, precisamente, mi marido y yo estuvimos allí en primavera.
SoN: Personalmente, me encanta que no hayáis hecho una versión del himno catalán punto por punto, sino que lo habéis adaptado a vuestra propia canción, tomando partes de aquí y de allí, añadiendo vuestros propios pasajes y solos, traduciendo (incluso libremente) algunas frases, y cantando solo parte de ella en catalán. Sentimientos patrióticos al margen, creo que musicalmente es una gran versión. Explícanos un poco por qué decidistéis hacerla y cuál ha sido el proceso compositivo detrás.
Bien, cuando decidimos hacer esta canción, quise mantener el feeling sin hacer una versión exacta. Nuestro guitarrista la arregló de manera que mantuvimos la melodía, pero yo reescribí las líneas vocales de la primera estrofa, que no son como en el himno pero aún así cuadran con los acordes originales. Canto el estribillo como en la canción original, aunque la traducción en inglés está hecha de manera que las palabras sean más fáciles de encajar y de cantar. Al final añadimos el galope, y esto es lo que realmente le dió un toque de energía extra a la canción.
SoN: Por supuesto asumo que para vosotros ha sido una locura ver la respuesta que esta versión ha tenido en Cataluña. Habéis estado en la televisión pública catalana y en las radios, un lugar que parece vetado para las bandas de metal en general, así que de golpe todo el mundo, metalero o no, está hablando de vosotros. ¿Cómo lo has vivido a nivel personal, desde la distancia? ¿Cuál ha sido la reacción de tus compañeros de banda, que asumo que no tenían una conexión especial con Cataluña antes?
Para mí ha sido muy surrealista, ya que no estamos acostumbrados a recibir tanta atención, pero a la vez, como dices, no es algo que estemos viviendo en nuestras carnes sino desde una cierta distancia, así que no llegamos a sentimos superados por la situación, pero es igualmente excitante. Mis compañeros de banda son felices de ser parte de todo esto, porque aunque no son catalanes han estado viendo las noticias (Cataluña está en las noticias todo el rato, aquí) así que no ignoran todo lo que está pasando. Están contentos de ser apreciados, eso seguro.
SoN: ¿Y qué piensa tu madre de todo esto?
Está muy contenta. Tanto ella como mi padre siempre me han apoyado a mí y a mi música, y aunque no les guste el metal siempre vinieron a todos nuestros conciertos desde el principio. ¡Ver como hemos evolucionado de ser una minúscula banda de bar a ser una pequeña celebridad en su lugar de nacimiento ha sido algo muy grande para ella!
SoN: Por supuesto, vuestra versión ha llegado en un momento políticamente muy delicado para Cataluña, así que creo que la gente ha abrazado vuestra contribución con más pasión aún. ¿Has segudo los eventos? ¿Qué opinas de ello?
Lo he seguido todo muy de cerca, ya que mi familia está allí y aquí también tenemos las noticias llenas del tema. Creo que los catalanes han decidido lo que quieren y ahora es el momento para que luchen por ello.
SoN: ¿Qué tipo de comentarios habéis recibido? ¿Habéis recibido también algun tipo de reacción negativa por parte de ciertos sectores de la sociedad española?
Quizás algunos comentarios negativos en Youtube, pero a parte de eso nada. Incluso estoy un poco sorprendido por ello, pero tampoco creo que los españoles sean, en general, gente violenta o enfadada. Creo que todo el mundo quiere llevarse bien.
SoN: ¿Conoces algo sobre la escena metalera catalana? ¿Habéis recibido mensajes de bandas de aquí?
¡Sí! Unas cuantas bandas se han puesto en contacto con nosotros, pidiéndonos abrir nuestros conciertos. Los he ido reenviando a los promotores, así que confio en que la cosa funcione.
SoN: Aprovechando el revuelo que ha causado la canción, vendréis a tocar en un mes o así. ¿Cuántos conciertos váis a hacer y qué esperáis de esta gira?
Tenemos cinco conciertos en total: Terrassa, Tarragona, Girona (ndr. La Bisbal de l’Empordà), Lleida (ndr. La Pobla de Segur) y Barcelona. De momento la recepción ha sido genial, hay un montón de fans que nos han dicho que quieren venir a varios conciertos y esto es un gran honor para nosotros. Nunca hemos tocado en Europa, y estoy realmente excitada por el hecho de tocar en Cataluña, ya que siempre había sido mi sueño.
SoN: En Barcelona, por cierto, vais a tocar en la Sala Razzmatazz 2, una sala con capacidad para unas 800 personas en la que en las últimas semanas he visto a Satyricon, Paradise Lost y Udo Dirkschneider. No sé en qué tipo de salas soléis tocar, pero si llenáis ésta va a ser algo realmente impresionante. ¿Cómo te sientes ante algo así?
¡Un poco nerviosa pero excitada! Hemos tocado con Udo en un escenario así de grande en Baltimore, por lo que sabemos lo que es tocar ante una audiencia de este tamaño, pero sería la primera vez que tal cantidad de gente vendría a vernos específicamente a nosotros! Nos sentimos algo abrumados por ello y solo nos queda esperar que sea un éxito y que podamos hacer un gran show.
SoN: ¿Cómo os llegó la oportunidad de hacer esta gira? ¿Es algo que buscásteis vosotros mismos u os contactaron promotores de aquí?
Un poco de todo. En un principio intentamos cerrar las fechas nosotros mismos, tal y como hacemos habitualmente (de hecho, éste es uno de mis trabajos) pero entonces nuestro amigo Mario Campani se puso en contacto con nosotros. Él tiene más experiencia organizando giras a nivel internacional, así que fue capaz de cerrar el resto de fechas.
SoN: ¿Vendréis solo aquí o también haréis otros conciertos en Europa? ¿Dónde? ¿Tocaréis el himno también ahí?
Sí, tocaremos en Alemania el 8 y el 9 de diciembre, y probablemente también tocaremos «The Reapers» allí, ya que a día de hoy la ponen en muchos sitios y creo todo el mundo ha llegado a apreciar la canción en sí.
SoN: Os hemos visto en la prensa generalista catalana incluso más que en los medios metaleros locales. ¿Tenéis miedo de que la gente venga a vuestros conciertos más por razones políticas o patrióticas que por la música en sí, y que básicamente estén esperando todo el concierto a que toquéis el himno, ignorando el resto de vuestra música? ¿Qué tipo de público esperáis?
Esperamos que no sea así. Al contrario, tengo la esperanza que la gente disrute también del resto de nuestras canciones. No creo que mucha gente haga el esfuerzo de ir a un concierto solo por una canción, y no creo que vayamos a decepcionar a los fans que vengan. Tenemos un montón de música, así que espero que encuentren más de una canción de la que disfrutar.
SoN: En relación a esto, ¿habéis notado que la gente en Cataluña está escuchando vuestra música mucho más en general, o creéis que sobretodo están interesados en «The Reapers»?
Hemos tenido mucha más gente interesándose por nosotros, ¡y especialmente el Kickstarter! Publicar «Els Segadors» ha dado un empujón a nuestra campaña en Cataluña, así que parece que sí que quieren más de nosotros que una canción.
SoN: ¿Habéis preparado un espectáculo especial para esta canción en particular en los conciertos que váis a dar en Cataluña?
Sí, estamos preparando nuestra puesta en escena ahora mismo. Como es de esperar, la música en directo es diferente de la música en estudio, así que creo que el público va a disfrutar de lo que tenemos para ofrecer.
SoN: A parte de «Els Segadors», ¿qué podemos esperar de un concierto de A Sound Of Thunder? ¿Cuáles son vuestras características principales? ¿Qué le explicarías a esos metaleros que no dan demasiada importancia al revuelo generado con el himno para convencerles que vengan a vuestros conciertos?
Creo que gente que no sea necesariamente fan del heavy metal puede disfrutar de nuestro show igualmente, ya que una cosa que he oído a menudo es «No me gusta el heavy metal, pero me gustáis vosotros». Creo que se trata de la combinación entre nuestras composiciones y mi forma de cantar, que es algo más «tradicional». Tengo un estilo similar al de Rob Halford o Dio, pero con un toque femenino que creo que lo hace más fácil de digerir por parte de gente que no esté tan familiarizada con el metal. En lo referente a nuestra puesta en escena, puedes esperar un montón de energía, diversión y quizás incluso algún intento de hablar en catalán.
SoN: Si tuvieras que escoger una sola canción de A Sound Of Thunder para representar lo que es la banda a gente que no os conoce, ¿cuál sería?
Diría «A Sound Of Thunder». Literalmente escribimos esta canción para gente que no nos conoce, como una especie de carta de presentación de nuestro estilo musical y nuestras habilidades.
SoN: Y si pudieras organizar una gira con cuatro bandas, siendo una de ellas A Sound Of Thunder, ¿cuáles escogerías y por qué?
Oh, ¡ésta es una buena pregunta! Creo que escogería Accept, Edguy y Iron Maiden. Sería el concierto más grande y más loco del mundo.

SoN: Hi Nina! First of all, I would like to thank you for dedicating some time to answer these questions for Science of Noise. How are you?
I’m great, thank you!
SoN: Well, you have suddenly become a small sensation here thanks to your «Els Segadors» Catalan anthem cover, and we will of course come to that later. But first of all, tell us a bit about A Sound Of Thunder: Who are you? What defines you as a band? What are your influences?
A Sound of Thunder is a heavy metal band. Josh, our guitarist and Chris, our drummer started this idea and I joined in 2009. Jesse, our bass player, joined in 2010 and we’ve been together ever since. Our influences vary between us, but I think some of the bands we have in common are Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, RUSH, and Dio.
SoN: Even though we didn’t know about you here before, you are not a new band at all. You have been around for almost ten years and soon you will release your seventh studio album. How big are you in your area and in the States? Have you toured around the country and outside? Have you opened for well known bands?
Yes, we have toured the United States, plus Canada. We have played cities as far as Portland, Austin, and Montreal. In our own home area, we have opened for bands like Accept, Sabaton, Hammerfall, UDO, DORO, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody of Fire, and Firewind.
SoN: I have been listening a bit to your past efforts and what I see is a classic heavy metal band with a powerful modern sound, a blend that I actually liked quite a lot. What can we expect from your new album «It Was Metal»? Are you introducing any changes from the last albums?
The new album will definitely be a bit faster than our last few albums. We tried to pump up the energy a little, so there will be less of a doom influence than our last two albums.
SoN: Let’s go for it then: so you personally have a catalan background, is it? Tell us a bit about it. When did your family moved to the States? Have you yourself been to Catalonia before?
Yes, I have been many times. My mother came to the US in the early 70’s, but she is the only one here. I have three uncles, my grandfather, and cousins still in Catalonia and we visit every few years. Last year my husband and I visited for the spring.
SoN: I particularly love the fact that you just didn’t do a bit by bit cover of the anthem, but rather adapted it to your own unique song, taking parts here and there, adding your own bits and solos, translating (even freely) some sentences, and singing only a part of it in catalan. Patriotic feelings aside, I think it is a great cover musically. Tell us a bit why did you decide to do it and also the musical process behind it.
Well when we decided to do this song, I wanted to keep the feeling without doing a direct cover. My guitarist arranged the song so that we kept the melody, but I rewrote the vocal lines for the first verse so they aren’t like the anthem but still fit the original chords. I sing the chorus of the song as the original version, and we translated the English lyrics into words that are easier for me to sing. Then we added the gallop, and it really gave the song energy.
SoN: Of course I assume that for you it has been absolutely crazy to witness the response that your cover has caused around here. You have been in catalan national TV and radios, a place void of metal bands in general, and suddenly everybody, metal or not, is talking about you. How have you personally lived all this, from the distance? And how has been the reaction of your band mates, which I assume didn’t have a particular connection with Catalonia before?
For me it has been very surreal, since we are not used to having so much attention, but at the same time we still aren’t really experiencing it except from far away. So while we aren’t overwhelmed, it is still exciting. My bandmates are happy to be a part of this, because while they’re not Catalan they have heard all of the news (Catalonia is big in the news, here) so they’re not ignorant of what is happening. They’re happy to be appreciated, that’s for sure.
SoN: And what does your mother think about this whole response?
She’s definitely happy. She and my dad were always very supportive of me and my music, even if they’re not metalheads they still went to all of our shows, even from the beginning. Seeing things go from a small band in a bar to a minor celebrity in her hometown has been pretty great for my mom!
SoN: Of course, your anthem cover has been released precisely in a very delicate political moment for Catalonia, which I think has made people embrace it more powerfully. Have you been following the events? What do you think about it?
I have been following the events very closely, since my family is there and it’s all over the news here. I think the Catalan people have decided what they want and it’s up to them to fight for it.
SoN: What type of feedback have you received? Have you also received some sort of negative backlash by certain sectors of the spanish society?
Maybe a few negative comments on YouTube, but besides that, nothing really. I’m actually a little surprised by that, but I don’t think Spanish people are, in general, angry or violent people either. I think everyone just wants to get along.
SoN: Do you know anything yourself about the metal scene in Catalonia? Have you received any messages from bands here?
Yes we have! A few bands have contacted us, asking to open for our shows. I’ve been sending them to the promoters so hopefully that will work out.
SoN: Riding the hype that the song has caused, you will be coming to play here in about a month. How many concerts will you be doing and what do you expect from this tour?
We have five shows total: Terrassa, Tarragona, Girona, Lleida, and Barcelona. So far the reception has been great, we’ve had a lot of fans saying they want to go to multiple shows and that is a huge honor for us. Having never played Europe, I’m really excited by the fact that I get to play in Catalonia because that was always my dream.
SoN: In Barcelona, by the way, you are scheduled to play in Razzmatazz 2, a venue with capacity of about 800 people where in the last few weeks I have seen Satyricon, Paradise Lost and Udo Dirkschneider. I don’t know what type of venues you are used to play, but if you fill this it will be pretty amazing. How do you feel about it?
A little nervous but excited! We have played with Udo Dirkschneider at a stage that big in Baltimore so we know what it’s like to play for an audience like that, but this will be the first time an audience of that size might actually come for us! We are very humbled by this and can only hope for success and to put on a great show.
SoN: And how did the opportunity to do this tour arise? Was it something that you seeked yourselves or did a local promoter contacted you?
It was both, we were at first attempting to book the shows ourselves (as we typically do, I actually primarily do the booking) but then our friend Mario Campani contacted us. He has more experience booking internationally, so he was able to help us secure the rest of the dates.
SoN: Are you coming just here or you are also playing other dates in Europe? If so, where? Will you also be playing the anthem in your other shows?
Yes, we will also be playing in Germany on December 8th and 9th. We will probably play The Reapers because at this point it’s being played in so many places, I think everyone appreciates the song itself.
SoN: We have seen you in catalan generalist media even more than in local metal media. Are you afraid that people will come to see you more for a political / patriotic reason that for the music itself, and that basically they will be waiting the whole show to hear the anthem and ignore the rest of the music? What sort of crowd do you expect?
We are hoping that isn’t the case, but certainly we hope that people will enjoy the rest of our music. I’m not sure how many people would put in the effort to go to a show for only one song, but I don’t think we will disappoint them. We have so much music, I’m hopeful they will find more than one song to enjoy.
SoN: Regarding this, have you noticed that people from Catalonia is listening to all your music more, and gave you feedback, or you think they are mostly interested in «The Reapers»?
We have had a lot more people checking us out, especially the KickStarter! Releasing Els Segadors gave our campaign a big boost from people in Catalonia so it is definitely new fans who want more than just one song.
SoN: Have you prepared a special performance for that particular song in your shows here?
Yes, we are preparing our stage show now. As you can expect, live music is different from studio music so I think the audience will enjoy what we bring.
SoN: And besides hearing this song, what can we expect from A Sound of Thunder live? What are your trademarks? What would you tell those metal fans that don’t particularly care about the hype to convince them to come and see you?
So for those people who don’t necessarily like heavy metal, I think they will still enjoy our set because one thing I have heard a lot is “I don’t like metal, but I like you”. I think this is a combination of our songwriting and my style of singing, which I would say is more “traditional”. I have a singing style more similar to Rob Halford and Dio, but with a female inflection that I think is easy for non-metal people to digest. As for our stage show, you can expect a lot of energy, fun, and maybe an attempt to speak Catalan.
SoN: If you had to choose a single song from A Sound Of Thunder that represents what the band is about to people that doesn’t know you, which one would it be?
I would say “A Sound of Thunder”. We literally wrote that song for people who don’t know us, as a sort of show-case of our musical style and skill.
SoN: And if you could put up a tour with four bands, being A Sound Of Thunder one of them, which ones would you choose and why!
Oh that’s a good question! I think I would pick Accept, Edguy, and Iron Maiden. It would be the biggest craziest show in the world.
