Entrevista a Chris David, bajista de Majestica: ‘Supongo que nuestro estilo sería symphonic power metal‘

¡Hola, Chris! Gracias por tu tiempo. ¿Qué tal?

 Hey, estoy bien. He estado un poco ocupado grabando el disco y los videos que hay.

Te escribe las preguntas tras haber hecho la review de “A Christmas Carol” (2020) pero antes de que salga a la venta. Debo decir que me ha sorprendido (también porque, actualmente, estoy leyendo el libro. Qué coincidencia) ¿Cómo salió la idea?

 Hehe, eso mola.

De alguna forma la idea surgió de varias ideas. Todo empezó las navidades pasadas cuando hicimos una versión de “All I Want for Christmas is You” por diversión, una estrofa y el estribillo, como algo especial para nuestras redes sociales. El feedback fue tremendo y muchos fans pidieron más o, incluso, un álbum entero de música de Navidad. Pensamos que quizá, en un futuro, lo haríamos.

Entonces empezó todo lo del Covid y se cancelaron los conciertos y tuve la idea de componer temas originales pero mezclándolos con melodías tradicionales navideñas. Tommy cogió la idea e hizo una demo. Cuando empezamos a pensar en las letras me dijo que hizo “Cuento de Navidad” como musical en la escuela, que conocía muy bien la historia y que podía hablar de ella. En ese punto no sabíamos si iban a ser un par de temas o, quizá, algunas versiones. Pero cuando todo estuvo en sitio en la primera demo, continuamos con la idea y evolucionó en este álbum, que sería como un musical navideño metalero.

¿Puedes contarnos el proceso de mezclar metal con todas esas melodías navideñas? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición?

 Fue difícil saber qué escoger, pero debían ser melodías reconocibles. De echo hay algunas melodías tradicionales suecas que quizá no sean demasiado conocidas fuera de Suecia. Funcionó de esta manera, Tommy es el compositor principal del grupo así que normalmente hace las primeras demos y luego nos las pasa y, quizá, le doy ideas para arreglos o le digo que puede poner tal parte en tal sitio. También trabajo como técnico de guitarra, así que escribí algunas melodías en el trabajo con una acústica que creo que tenían espíritu navideño, las grabé en vídeo con mi teléfono y se las pasé a Tommy y él las desarrolló hasta convertirlas en una canción y juntarlas con otras melodías.

¿Cómo definirías la música de Majestica? He leído de ella que es power metal, metal sinfónico, power sinfónico…

Haha, esa es una buena pregunta.

Creo que es difícil de definir exactamente lo que hace Majestica. Quiero decir que desde el principio con Above the Sky (2019) el estilo era, principalmente, power metal, pero también tiene estilos diferentes y, por supuesto, muchas partes sinfónicas.

Este album es mucho más sinfónico pero al mismo tiempo mantiene esos momentos power. Creo que es muy guay que podamos juntar varios estilos y a la gente parece gustarle ambas partes. Supongo que sería symphonic power metal y tener lo mejor de ambos estilos, ja ja.

Cuento de Navidad, el libro, seguramente sea la historia navideña más popular y ha sido adaptada en muchas vías (películas, Los Simpson y un largo etcétera). ¿Por qué la escogisteis? ¿pensasteis en alguna otra historia de Navidad?

Quizá sí ha sida adaptada de muchas formas pero no creo que haya sido un musical power sinfónico.

No pensamos en otras historias, la verdad, desde Tommy me dijo que lo había hecho como un musical de adolescente. Pensamos que iría muy bien con nuestro estilo, así que toda la banda pensó enseguida que era una gran idea.

He visto que en el álbum cantáis todos, y lo hacéis muy bien. ¿Cómo lo decidisteis?

¡Gracias! Creo que esto se generó en el propio estudio. Teníamos planeado que yo grabaría un tema con Tommy ya que hago muchos coros en directo, pero luego teníamos una línea para otro personaje y Anders de Veonity aportó su voz como invitado. Cuando tuvimos esa empezamos a probar voces diferentes para todos los personajes y salió así.

A Christmas Carol es el segundo álbum de Majestica. ¿Lo ves, en el futuro, como EL proyecto de Tommy, estando él en Sabaton?

Majestica fue antes otra banda llamada ReinXeed con algunos discos editados, así que ya llevamos un tiempo. Continuaremos trabajando en material nuevo en el futuro y haciendo lo que hacemos. Por supuesto Sabaton le quita mucho tiempo a Tommy y algunos de nosotros tenemos otras bandas y Majestica debe adaptarse. No es fácil, pero Majestica es también un grupo de cuatro muy buenos amigos que lo han sido durante mucho tiempo. Así que cuando haya tiempo trabajaremos juntos, es una forma de pasarlo bien y salir por ahí siendo, al mismo tiempo, un grupo.

¿Cual es tu tema preferido?

¿Del disco o de siempre? De siempre, no sé, pero seguramente diría algo de Black Sabbath. Del álbum, “Ghost of Marley” y, cerca, “Ghost of Christmas Present”.

¿Y la que mejor representa la música de Majestica?

Creo que “Ghost of Marley” la representa muy bien. Esa lo tiene todo como grandes estribillos, guitarras y bajos afilados, voces diferentes, arreglos orquestales, doble bombo…

Ahora, con el Covid, es difícil de decir, pero ¿hay planes de gira?

 Tenemos algunos festivales de verano reagendados, que debían ser del verano pasado. Aparte de eso, no lo sé. Hay charlas de algunas cosas pero es difícil concretar cuando y si será posible.

Si uno de los tres fantasmas tuviera que visitarte, ¿Cuál preferirías?

Hmm… quizá el fantasma de las navidades presentes, así podría ver lo que estoy haciendo y ver si soy un auténtico idiota o si puedo hacer algo de mejor manera para ser mejor persona de lo que soy ahora, ja ja.

Hi Chris, thanks for your time. How’re you doing?

Hey, I’m fine! Been a few very busy months to get this album and all videos out there!

I’m writing this interview after writing the review of “A Christmas Carol” but before its release. I have to say I’ve been surprised (also because now I’m reading the book! What a coincidence). How did the idea came out?

Hehe, that is very cool!

Well the idea kind of came out of a few other ideas.

It all started last Christmas when we did a little cover of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” just for fun, one verse and one chorus. As a special thing for our social medias. The feedback was awesome and many fans requested more or even an entire Christmas album. We thought maybe someday in the future!

Then all the Covid started and it all got cancelled, I got the idea of writing originals but mixing them with traditional Christmas melodies. Tommy got going on this idea and made a demo. When we started thinking about lyrics he told me that he did “A Christmas Carol” as musical back in school and he knew the story very well so could about that one. At this point we didn’t know if it was going to be album or a couple of songs maybe a few covers you know.  But when it was all in place on that first demo we continued the idea and it evolved to this album, that was going to be like musical Christmas metal album.

Can you tell us the process of mixing metal with all those all-time Christmas melodies? How did the writing process go?

It was a bit hard to figure out what use and stuff but, they had to be recognizable ones. There is actually also a few traditional Swedish melodies in there as well that might not be very known outside of Sweden. It worked like this, Tommy is the main songwriter in the band so he makes the first demos usually and then send them over and maybe I give him some arrangement ideas of stuff or you know, maybe you could put this here and so on. I’m also working as a guitar teacher so I came up with some melodies at work with acoustic guitars that I thought had a Christmas feel, recorded them on my phone with video, sent them to Tommy and he developed them to a song and put it together with other melodies that did fit well with the one I sent.

How would you tag Majestica’s music? I’ve read power metal, symphonic mental, symphonic power…

Haha, yep that is a good question!

I think with Majestica it’s hard to say. I mean from the start with ‘Above The Sky’ the style was mainly power metal, but there was different styles in that album as well and of course a lot of symphonic parts.

With this album it’s much more symphonic but at the same time it still has those power metal moments. Which I think is pretty cool that we can pull off a few different styles and people seems to enjoy both sides of it. I guess it would be symphonic power metal so we have the best of both worlds, haha!

A Christmas Carol, the book, is surely the most know Christmas story and it has been adapted in many ways (movies, the Simpson and a long etc). Why did you choose it? Did you thought in other Christmas stories?

Yes probably. It has been adapted in many ways but I don’t think it has been a symphonic power metal Christmas musical before!

We didn’t think about other stories really, when Tommy told me he did it as a musical in school when he was a teenager. We thought that it would work very well with our style, so all of the band thought it was a great idea right away!

I’ve seen that the four of you sing in the album, and the four of you do it really well. How did you decided this?

Thanks! I think it developed this way in the studio actually. It was just planned to be me singing one sing with Tommy at first as I’m doing a lot of backing vocals live, but then we got some other voice that had to be another person and got Anders from Veonity doing some guest vocals. When we got that one back we started trying to add different voices to all characters and it turned out this way.

A Christmas Carol is only the second album of Majestica. Do you see, in a future, being THE project of Tommy, since he is in Sabaton?

Majestica was before also another band called ReinXeed which has a few records out there. So it has been around for a while. And we will continue working on new stuff etc in the future and do what we do. Of course Sabaton takes a lot of time for Tommy and some of us has some other bands we are playing with and Majestica has to work around it all. Which is not very easy, but Majestica is also a band with 4 very good friends that has been friends for a long time. So when there is time we will work with it, it is a way for us to have fun and hang out while also being a band.

Which song is your favoirte one?

On the album or of all time?

All time, I don’t know, but I would probably say something with Black Sabbath!

From the album, Ghost of Marley, very close with Ghost of Christmas Present!

And the one better represents Majestica’s music?

I think Ghost of Marley represents it very well. That one has it all you know like big choirs, guitar and bass shredding, different voices, symphonic arrangement, double bass drum etc.

Now, with the Covid, it is difficult to say, but are there any touring plans?

Well we have some summer festivals rebooked that was supposed to be last summer. Other than that we don’t know. There is some stuff in the talks but it’s so hard to figure when and if it will happen at the moment.

If one of the three ghosts had to visit you, which one would you prefer?

Hmm… maybe ghost of Christmas present. So I could see what I’m actually doing and figure out if I’m a complete idiot or if can do something in a better way to become better at what I’m doing at the moment, haha.
