Entrevista a Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell: ‘Somos tres bastardos ruidosos que lo pasan en grande’

SofN: Buenos días chicos, primero de todo quiero agradeceros por la oportunidad de realizar esta entrevista. ¡Gracias!

Quizás alguno de nuestros lectores no conoce mucho sobre Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, ¿podríais poner en contexto a la banda y su propuesta musical ?

Johnny: ¡Sonamos como el Concorde despegando en un alud! ¡Somos tan pesados que arrastramos otras bandas a nuestra órbita!

Louis: Bien, Shovell (como nos conocen cariñosamente) somos un trío de dos chavales peludos e ingeless y una chica australiana, tocamos música antigua e inepta, heavy metal antiguo (pensad en Bang, Buffalo, Sir Lord Baltimore, Budgie o Status Quo). ¡No somos virtuosos pero somos muy pesados!

SofN: La banda se formó en 2008 y después de tres buenos álbumes y más de diez años, sois casi los mismos que iniciasteis este proyecto, podriais explicar como es la convivencia entre vosotros ?

J: sí, es fácil de explicar, no somos las mismas personas!

L: Desafortunadamente no somos los mismos, nos separamos de nuestro antiguo batería Bill Darlington durante la grabación de nuestro tercer trabajo y desde octubre de 2017 estamos tocando con Serra Petale (alias the Perth Pulveriser). Entonces, me temo que es esa historia antigua, si el batería no está trabajando para la banda, ¡consíganme otro batería! Serra es una batería de primera clase.

SofN: Sois tres músicos e imagino que a veces puede ser complicado llegar a un acuerdo. ¿Como funciona el proceso creativo en Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell ?

J: Abordamos todo diplomaticamente, de una forma adulta, y si no me salgo con la mía, tengo una rabieta, cagaré en el suelo y ¡patearé a los otros dos!

L: ¡Ja, continúa con la etiqueta de “músicos”! Somos tres mozos que hacemos un trabajo hermoso. Johnny toma la mayor parte del trabajo. ¡Se le conoce como la Hairy Green Riff-Recycling Machine! Reporducimos las pistas en el ensayo, agregamos o quitamos cosas y generalmente las ajustamos, despúes de una tarde en el pub, las rociamos con el polvo mágico!

SofN: Y ahora un par de preguntas más “extrañas”. Primero sobre todas vuestras carátulas de los discos, que significa el personaje medio hombre medio pájaro ?

J: Un día descendió del cielo, vestido con un traje brillante y una capa de lino y nos dijo: “Adelante, multiplicad vuestra inteligencia” o, al menos, fue algo así.

L: El hombre pájaro? Viejo “cabeza de buitre”? Hay un significado, pero joder, ¿no sabes qué es? La idea de un tema en común que inspiró a bandas como Budgie o Iron Maiden, no es una idea nueva, pero no estamos encabezando un cambio de consciencia o intentado forjar un nuevo orden mundial dentro del rock n roll heavy.

SofN:Y la segunda, quien es “Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell” ?

J: Significa “que te jodan” en Swahili.

L: Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell fue un personaje importante de la historia naval Británica. Puedes buscarlo en Google.

SofN: Estamos esperando un nuevo disco, vuestro último álbum fue en 2016, titulado Keep it Greasy, fue un buen trabajo. Notáis que habéis madurado con el tiempo o simplemente vais evolucionando?

L: jaja! he oído muchas cosas pero ¿inteligente? Solo intentamos seguir tocando los mismos sensacionales sonidos, ineptos y con un sonido pesado. ¿Quén necesita madurar? Nosotros estamos más en la inmadurez!

SofN:¿Que podemos esperar de 2019? ¿Estáis trabajando en un nuevo álbum ? Nos podéis hacer algún “Spoiler”?

J: Si! No necesitas spoilers, ya lo hemos estropeado suficiente!

L: Si, un nuevo álbum, con el mismo estilo de siempre, ¡pero sin spoilers!

SofN:Con la perspectiva que da el tiempo, ¿de que decisiones estáis más orgullosos y que otras deberíais haber tomado diferente?

L: Nada, nunca he lamentado nada, la vida es demasiado corta para tales cosas.  

SofN: A finales de abril vais a venir a Barcelona para tocar en el increíble Riff Ritual Festival Vol.5, un festival que siempre ha apostado por grandes bandas. ¿Qué clase de show podemos esperar de vosotros ?

J: Sin tregua, muchos riffs y rock’n’roll.

L: El normal, tres bastardos ruidosos en un pequeño escenario pasándolo en grande. ¿Qué más se puede necesitar ?

SofN: Creo que este será vuestro segundo concierto en Barcelona. ¿Qué pensáis del público de Barcelona y del español ?

J: Creo que será la tercera vez, aunque hemos sido visitantes regulares desde la década de 1990 con otras bandas. ¡Me encanta España y los españoles, fieles fans del rock, la cerveza siempre muy fría y las chicas muy guapas!

L: Barcelona es una gran ciudad, llena de gente muy decente, algunos grandes conciertos, alcohol, incluso drogas… un montón de edificions divertidos, una gran catedral sin terminar, un idoma que no se parece al español, teatros, un gorila blanco, el mar y una comida más o menos decente.

SofN: ¿Qué bandas han influenciado en el sonido de Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell ?

J: Creo que te lo puedo decir! ¡Casi la mayoría de los 60’s y 70’s rock, prog y psych! Con una cucharada de British New Wave Of British Heavy Metal! Creo que queríamos sonar como Sir Lord Baltimore, Budgie, Dust, Quo, Humble Pie,  MC5 y Motörhead, todo en uno!

L: Man, Status Quo, Sir Lord Baltimore, Frost, Dust, Bang, Budgie, Buffalo, Master’s Apprentices, Captain Beyond y Golden Earrings (nada más, jajaj).

SofN: En nuestra revista disfrutamos haciendo “Tops”, podríais numerar cinco álbumes que han dejado huella en la banda ?

J: Sir Lord Baltimore – Kingdom Come, the Litter – Emerge, Motörhead – Overkill, MC5 – Back In The USA y Basil Brush – Live at Carnegie Hall ! 

L: Golden Earrings – On the Double; The Who – My Generation, Status Quo – Ma Kelly’s Greasy Spoon , Man – 2oz of Plastic With A Hole in the Middle, y Budgie – Squawk.

Johnny: Saludos! Rock on!

SofN: Good morning, first of all, I would like I want to thank you for the opportunity to do this interview! Thanks boys.

 Maybe some  of our readers doesn’t know about Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, could you put in context the band and his musical proposal? 

J: We sound like Concorde taking off in a mudslide! We’re so heavy, we drag other bands into our orbit!

L: Well, the Shovell (as we’re lovingly known) are a trio of two hairy English boys and one Australian girl, and we play old-fashioned, inept, early heavy-metal Music (think Bang, Buffalo, Sir Lord Baltimore, Budgie and Status Quo). We are no frills, but heavy on the thrills!

SofN: The band was formed in 2008, after three nice albums and more than ten years, you’re the same people that started this band. Can you explain how is the coexitence between you?

J: Yes, that is easily explained! We are NOT the same people!

L: Sadly, we’re not the same people. We parted Company with our old drummer Bill Darlington during the recording of album #3 and since October 2017 we have been playing with Serra Petale (aka the Perth Pulveriser). So, it’s that age old story I’m afraid, if the drummer isn’t working for the band, then get yourselves another drummer! Serra’s the most amazing fit, a top class drummer, powerful beyond belief and so dedicated her craft.

SofN: You are three musicians and I imagine that sometimes can be complicated to get in agreement. How does the creative process work in Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell ?

J: We discuss everything diplomatically, in an adult and grown up way, and then if I don’t get my way, I will have a tantrum, shit on the floor and kick it at the other 2!

L: Ha, steady on with the “musicians” tag! We’re three bozos who make a lovely racket. Johnny takes up the lion’s share of the work. He’s known as the Hairy Green Riff-Recycling Machine! We play the tracks in rehearsal, add and take stuff away, and generally tighten these up, and then after an afternoon in the pub, sprinkle them with the magic dust.

SofN: And now, two “strange” questions. Fist of all, about the art work of every LP. What’s the meaning of the rare bird-man ?

J: He descended from the sky one day, clad in shimmering samite and an ermine edged cape and said to us «Go forth and multiply you shining wits» or at least something like that!

L: The birdman? Old “Buzzard Head”? There’s a meaning alright, but fuck knows what it is? Seriously though, the idea of a common theme was inspired by the likes of Budgie and Iron Maiden, is not a new idea, but we’re not exactly spearheading a shift of consciousness or carving out a new world order of heavy rock’n’roll.

SofN: And the second one, what does “Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell” mean ?

J: It means «fuck you» in Swahili.

L: Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell was a real person in British naval history (Googl him).

SofN: We are waiting for a new LP,  your last work was an  amazing album called Keep it Greasy (2016),  it  was an intelligent work, very well-prepared, ¿May we talk about compositional maturity or is it a matter of natural evolution?

J: It’s all a question of diet, temperature, earwigs and brainpharts to the power of 17 1/2. 

L: Ha, I’ve Heard it called a lot, but “intelligent”? No, we’re not going to fuck with the formula (like Quo never managed). We’re just going to keep playing the same no-nonsense, heads down, inept, heavy rocking sounds. Who needs maturity? We’re more into immaturity!

SofN: What can we exect in 2019 ? are you working on a new album ? If the answer is “YES”, what can you explain about it ? ¡ We need some “spoilers” !

J: Yes! You don’t need spoliers, we’ ve spoiled it enough already!

L: Yes, a new album, with the same approach to our sound, but without spoilers!

SofN: With the perspective of time, what decisions are you most proud of and what do you think you should have taken before and what do you think was wrong?

L: Nothing, never regretted a thing, life’s too short for one thing.

 SofN: In later april, the band will come to Barcelona to play in Riff Ritual Festival Vol.5, an amazing festival with huge bands. What kind of show of your band we will live there ?

J: Non-stop, maximum riff mania and speed fuelled “fuck the safety net» rock’n’roll!

L: The usual, three noisy bastards on a small stage having a good time. What more does one need?

SofN: It will be your second show here, in Barcelona. Here there is a important hard rock fan base. A  What is your opinion about the Barcelona and Spanish public ?

J: I think it’s the third time, though we’ve been regular visitors since the 1990’s in other previous bands. I LOVE Spain and the Spanish people, loyal rock fans, cold beer and super-hot women!!!

L: Barcelona is a great city, full of decent people, some great gigs, good people, booze, drugs even, a bunch of funny looking buildings, a big unfinished cathedral, a language that does not resemble Spanish, theatres, a white Gorilla, the seaside and decent scran (food).

SofN: Which bands influenced on Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell sound ?

J: I think you can tell! Pretty much most 60’s and 70’s rock, prog and psych! With a spoonful of British New Wave Of British Heavy Metal! I think we wanted to sound like Sir Lord Baltimore, Budgie, Dust, Quo, Humble Pie,  MC5 and Motörhead rolled into one!

L: Man, Status Quo, Sir Lord Baltimore, Frost, Dust, Bang, Budgie, Buffalo, Master’s Apprentices, Captain Beyond and Golden Earrings (and that’s all, ha).

SofN: Our magazine team really enjoy the “Tops”, can you quote the top five albums that left a mark on Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell  since his youth until now?
