Entrevista a Andi Schnitzer, batería de Kissin’ Dynamite: ‘Queremos compartir el sentimiento de rock ‘n’ roll y libertad’

Hola, Andi. Gracias por usar tu tiempo para responde estas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Qué tal? ¿En qué andas metido?

Estoy bien. En casa, tumbado en el sofá y bebiendo zumo de naranja. Estaba comprando algo de comida. Cosas corrientes de gente normal.

A principios de año pudimos veros abriendo para Amaranthe y Powerwolf. ¿Algún recuerdo en especial?

Sí, recuerdo que fue, como siempre es en España, muy pasional. Siento que la gente está realmente agradecida cuando las bandas van a tocar. Pasión buena.

Tras una larga Carrera, 12 años y siete álbumes, erais poco conocidos en España. En el concierto mencionado pudisteis llegar a un mayor público y dejasteis una opinión muy positiva. ¿Notáis más interés desde enero?

Lo espero, eso creo. Fue algo muy Bueno para nosotros abrir para esas dos bandas, Amaranthe y Powerwolf, también porque son muy grandes y trajeron a mucha gente, y lo necesitábamos, ya que durante mucho tiempo no hemos tenido la oportunidad de tocar delante de tanta gente en otros países fuera de Alemania, así que fue perfecto, y más tras la salida de Ecstasy (2018).

Creo que es una buena base para tocar nuestros propios shows en Europa, también en España, y es lo que haremos en otoño.

De echo tenia una pregunta sobre esto, era la número 6 pero te la hago ahora. ¿Qué podemos esperar de ese concierto? Aparte de la duración, ¿Cuáles pueden ser las mayores diferencias entre enero y otoño?

Sí, por supuesto tocaremos más rato, mucho más. No sé, quizá 100 minutos o más, en vez de 40. Tocaremos muchos temas nuevos de Ecstasy, que creo que es un disco bueno y exitoso, así que tocaremos mucho de él.

Creo que será un show explosivo y entretenido, como se supone que debe ser Kissin’ Dynamite.

Vuestros vídeos, toda vuestra imagen, están claramente influenciados por la estética de los 80. Las mujeres que salen en los vídeos visten de manera muy sexy y, aunque puedan tener una personalidad fuerte, parece que solo acompañan a los hombres. ¿Teméis que os tachen de machistas, aunque no sea vuestra intención?

Ah, porque jugamos un poco con los clichés del rock n’ roll, chicas sexys i demás.

Sí.

No, y si alguien lo piensa es su problema. Nosotros solamente celebramos la vida, con el sentimiento de querer compartirlo con la gente. Queremos compartir el sentimiento de rock n’roll y libertad. Y libertad, a mis ojos, es ser sexy. Tienes que disfrutar todo lo que te da la vida, ¿por qué no? No tiene nada que ver con qué pensemos que las mujeres tienen que ser sexy, cocinar y fregar. Es más un “no estás solo, estamos todos juntos. Vamos a disfrutar tanto como podamos” y nada más.

Otro de los puntos a destacar es la solidez de vuestra formación. Seguís siendo los mismos que empezaron. Sabemos que girar puede ser difícil y no siempre cómodo, así que ¿Cuál es vuestro secreto?

¿Quieres decir el secreto de permanecer juntos?

Sí.

No es fácil, no siempre lo ha sido. Un día, uno u otro quiere dejarlo, todos tenemos nuestras crisis aquí y allí, pero cuando envejeces aprendes más y más cómo funcionan las cosas en términos de trabajar juntos, ser humanos juntos y cómo solucionar problemas.

Esto implica que es importante saber cuando alguien necesita su Descanso y espacio, no hablarle durante un rato y que necesita tiempo para él, cosas así. Y si eres un poco sensible, puedes hacerlo.

El verano ya está aquí, y con él la temporada festivalera. ¿Os veremos en alguno, como banda o como fans? ¿O prefieres salas pequeñas?

Nuestro lema es Bring back stadium rock. Creemos que el rock está hecho para estadios, y por eso estamos encantados de tocar en festivales de verano. El sol brilla, conoces a muchos amigos, a muchas bandas, puedes ver a esas bandas… Es algo diferente a estar de gira, en clubs pequeños en los que estás solo que, por supuesto, también está bien porque tienes a tus fans y todo eso.

Los festivals de verano son un gran evento que se pueden disfrutar en un grado diferente

Creo que la próxima ya la has contestado. Vuestro lema es “Bring back stadium rock”. ¿Qué nos puedes decir?

Es, por supuesto, un guiño, porque sabemos que no llenamos estadios… aún. Es más por la vibra de la música. Creo que lo llamas rock de estadio porque si escuchas nuestra música puedes imaginar un gran estadio, con el sol poniéndose y con todo el mundo pasándoselo muy bien, bebiendo cerveza y escuchando música alegre.

Así que se supone que es música para ser tocada en estadios, y mientras no sea posible tocaremos donde sea, también en salas pequeñas.

Alemania ha sido cuna de muchas bandas buenas en diferentes estilos, normalmente con una calidad altísima. ¿Es la música una de las bases de vuestra educación en la escuela? ¿Cómo de importante es la música en vuestra sociedad?

En el colegio no teníamos clases en términos de música rock, aunque teníamos un profesor guay que cantaba con nosotros “Wind of change” de Scorpions.

Tengo que decir que fue algo más de nuestros padres, que nacieron en los 60 y 70. Son también rock n’roll children. Tenían toda la mierda buena, Iron Maiden o AC/DC. De Alemania tenían Helloween y Scorpions. De ellos aprendimos qué era la buena música y nuestras influencias.

Auque vuestra música es claramente hard rock de los 80, ¿puedes hablarnos de vuestras influencias y las tuyas propias?

Sí, como he dicho antes, esas bandas de los 80 que escuchábamos cuando teníamos 10 años. Para mí AC/DC e Iron Maiden son las influencias más importantes. Lo que experimentas de niño se te queda grabado.  

Si pudieras escoger un solo tema de la discografía de Kissin’ Dynamite que mejor represente vuestra música, ¿cuál sería?

Mmmm, esta es difícil…

A mí me gusta “I Will Be King”…

Creo que es una buena. Siempre tenemos estribillos pegadizos… honestamente, podría escoger muchos temas, pero los que más me gustan son esas canciones hímnicas, como “Generation Goodbye” o “I’ve got the Fire” o… ¿Cómo se llama? “Operation Supernova”. Esta última me encanta.

Juguemos y soñemos. Kissin’ Dynamite va a encabezar un tour con otras tres bandas, cualquier banda en la historia de la música. ¿Cuáles escogerías?

Si puedo escoger gente que ya ha muerto, sería interesante ir de gira con The Doors. Creo que no sería aburrido. Luego escogería Iron Maiden, debo hacerlo. Y la tercera sería AC/DC, no hay otra elección

Hello, Andi, and thanks for taking the time to respond to these questions for Science of Noise. How are you? What are you into?

I’m fine. At home, sitting on my coach and drinking orange juice. I was buying some food. Just random stuff normal people do.

At the beginning of the year we could see you opening for Amaranthe and Powerwolf. Any memories from that show?

Yeah, I remember it was, as it always is, quite passionate in Spain. I feel they are really thankful for that bands that come to play. Good passion.

After a long career, 12 years, and 7 albums, you were very little known in Spain. With the mentioned show you could access a bigger audience leaving a very positive opinion. Do you notice some more interest since last January?

I hope so, I guess they do. It was a very good thing for us supporting those two bands, Amaranthe and Powerwolf, also because they are so big, and there were so many people and it was necessary for us, because for a long time we didn’t have the opportunity to play in front of so many people in other countries than Germany, so this was just perfect for us, also right after having released Ecstasy (2018).

I think it’s a good bases to play our own shows in Europe, and also in Spain, ans that’s what we’re gonna do in fall.

Yes, in fact I had a question later about it, it was number 6 but I will do it now. What can we expect from it? Time apart, what can be the main differences between January and fall?

Yes, of course we will play longer, much longer. I don’t know, 100 minutes or more instead of 40 minutes. We are gonna play a lot of new songs from Ecstasy, because I think it’s quite a good album and successful album, so we will play a lot of it.

I think it’s going to be a quite explosive, entertaining show as it is supposed to be in Kissin’ Dynamite.

Your videos, and all your image, are clearly influenced by the 80s esthetic. Women on the videos appear to be very sexy and, although with a strong personality, they seem to be only a company of men. Do you worry you can be tagged as machoist although it’s not your intention to be?

Ah, because we play a little bit with the rock n’roll clihé, sexy women and stuff.

Yes.

No, and if some people would say it it’s their own fault. We just celebrate life with this feeling we want to share with people. We want to share the feeling of rock n’roll and freedom. And freedom, in my eyes, is to be sexy. You have to enjoy everything life has, why not. It has nothing to do with that we think women have to be sexy and to cook and to wash. It’s more like “you’re not alone, we’re all together. Let’s enjoy everything as much as possible” and nothing else.

Another thing to point out is the solid of your line up. You still are the same guys that started. We know touring can be hard and is not always comfortable, so what is your secret?

You mean the secret of staying together?

Yes.

It’s not easy, it’s not been easy always. The other day, one or the other wanted to quit, and everybody had their crisis here and there, but as you get older you learn more and more how thing work in terms of working together, and being humans together and how to solve problems.

This also means it is important to know when somebody need his rest and his space, and for a while he needs time for his own and things like this. And if you’re a little bit sensitive you can do it.

The summer’s here, and with it all the summer festivals around the globe. Will we see you in any,  as a band or as fans? Or are you more into smaller venues?

You know, our creed is Bring back stadium rock, we think rock is made for stadiums, and that’s why we are absolutely happy to play summer festivals. The sun is shinning, you meet all your friends, other bands, you can watch these other bands. It’s something different to play on a tour, on smaller clubs where you are on your own, which is, of course, also great because you’ve got your fans and everything.

Summer festivals are just a huge happening that you can really enjoy in a different grade.

I think the next one you’ve already answered. You hold the motto “Bring back stadium rock”. Can you tell us about it a bit more?

Of course it is with a blink of an eye because we are aware we don’t fill stadiums… yet. It’s more the vibe of the music, I think you can call it stadium rock, because if you listen to our music you can imagine a big stadium, where the sun is going down and everybody’s having a good time, drinking a beer and listening to some uplifting music.

So it’s music that’s supposed to be played in a stadium and as long as it’s not possible we play it everywhere else, also in clubs.

Germany has been and is a cradle of a lot of bands in different styles, and normally with a high quality. Is music a basis in your education in school? How important is music in your society?

At school we didn’t have lessons in terms of rock music, although we had a teacher who was very cool and sung with us “Wind of change” by Scorpions. But on and on I have to say it was more our parents, which were born in 1960, 1970. They are also rock n’ roll children. They had all the great shit, Iron Maiden and AC/DC. From Germany they had Helloween and Scorpions. From them we learned what was good music and our influences.

Although your music is clearly 80’s hard rock, can you tell us about the band’s influences and your owns?

Yes. I said before, those bands from the 80’s which we were listening when we were 10. For me it’s AC/DC and Iron Maiden, they are the most important influences. What you experience as a kid will always stick in your mind.

If you had to pick only one song from Kissin’ dynamite discography that best represents your music, which one would it be?

Mmmm, that’s a hard question…

I like “I Will Be King”…

Yes, I think it’s a quite good one. We always have catchy choruses… to be honest I could pick a lot of songs, but what I really like are those hymn-songs, like “Generation Goodbye” or “I’ve got the Fire” or… how is it called, “Operation Supernova”. I really like this one.

Let’s play and dream. Kissin’ Dynamite is going to headline a tour with 3 other bands. Any band in the history of music. Which ones would you choose?

If I could choose people that are already dead it would be quite interesting to go with The Doors. I  think it would not be boring. Then I would pic Iron Maiden, I have to. And the other one should be AV/DC, there is no choice.
