Recientemente tuvimos la inmensa oportunidad de entrevistar a Caliban, una de las mejores y más longevas bandas, no solo en la próspera escena metalcore europea, sino mundial. Con una sólida carrera tras ellos, y con el respeto que se han ganado tras veinte años de experiencia, esto es lo que su vocalista Andreas Dörner nos ha explicado …
SofN: Guten Tag, Andreas! ¿Cómo estás?
Hola, estoy bien… ¡gracias!
SofN: Hace unas semanas lanzasteis un nuevo single, «Before Later Comes Never», de vuestro próximo álbum de estudio Elements (2018), que, según vuestra web, es «una prueba de que los alemanes están creciendo más allá de las fronteras del género». ¿Qué podemos esperar?
Elements (2018) es un álbum de más extremos. Hay algunas canciones muy pesadas, pero también algunas que son muy «suaves/melódicas», con algunos elementos/influencias instrumentales nuevos.
SofN: ¿Qué hay de nuevo en vuestro nuevo material, si lo comparamos con Gravity (2016)?
Como dije antes, hay más extremos y hago yo todas las voces por primera vez.
SofN: Por cierto, un nutrido conjunto de estrellas han pasado tras los micrófonos como colaboraciones. ¿De dónde o de quién nació la idea de que Matthi (Nasty), Sebastian Biesler (Eskimo Cowboy), Chris McMahon (Thy Art Is Murder) o Brian «Head» Welch (Korn) cedieran sus voces para el nuevo álbum? ¿Alguna otra sorpresa?
La idea surgió de toda la banda, diría. Hablamos sobre posibles cantantes invitados y salieron esos nombres… también tenemos a Christoph «Kotsche» Koterzina de Callejon en nuestro álbum… en nuestra edición especial hay dos pistas más y una de ellas es «Forsaken Horizon», en la que también hizo las partes limpias.
SofN: ¿Qué pasaría si el agente de David Hasselhoff contactara con vosotros para una hipotética colaboración de cara a vuestro próximo álbum?
Sería divertido, pero creo que diríamos «no»… excepto que haríamos una versión de «Looking For Freedom»… ; )
SofN: Caliban, Heaven Shall Burn, Callejon, Eskimo Callboy, War From A Harlots Mouth, We Butter The Bread With Butter, etc. ¿Qué está pasando en Alemania en los últimos años? Es como si fuerais una fábrica inagotable de buenas bandas de metal…
Tenemos una muy buena escena de música metal en Alemania, algunos músicos muy talentosos y verdaderos fans que nos mantienen en activo… ¡y creo que eso es todo lo que necesitas!
SofN: ¿Algunas otras bandas locales de las que debemos ser conscientes? Danos la exclusiva…
Deberías echar un vistazo a Vitja, To The Rats And Wolves, Any Given Day, Fjort, Marathonmann, Rogers, Alazka, etc.
SofN: Como mencioné antes, vuestro nuevo álbum se llama Elements (2018). Los elementos clásicos típicamente se refieren a los conceptos en la antigua Grecia de «tierra», «agua», «aire», «fuego» y «éter». Caliban está compuesto por cinco miembros. Si tuvieras que asignárselos a cada uno… ¿quién es qué?

SofN: ¿Quéfue la parte más difícil de…?
- Escribir/crear material nuevo: tener/llegar al estado de ánimo adecuado y encontrar temas sobre los que escribir
- Grabar: hacerlo a tiempo… jajaja
- Ir de gira: no estar para el arrastre los primeros 2 días…
SofN: Este año es vuestro XXº Aniversario como banda. ¿Tenéis algo especial planeado?
Eso fue el año pasado, pero no, no tenemos ningún plan para una gran celebración…
SofN: Mirando hacia atrás en el tiempo, ¿crees que has logrado todos tus objetivos?
No tengo ningún objetivo real con Caliban. Estoy feliz de tener la oportunidad de ser parte de esto… feliz de estar todavía en el camino, de vivir un sueño, pero una cosa que quiero lograr es tocar en un par de países más que nunca antes hemos tocado, como África o Islandia…
SofN: ¿Qué cantantes han influido más en tu forma de cantar?
Eso es difícil de responder. En los días en que yo comencé, estaba muy metido en Unbroken, Korn, Machine Head, Converge, pero realmente no sé si alguno de estos grupos/cantantes influyó en mi estilo y forma de cantar.
SofN: La última vez que visitasteis Barcelona fue con Suicide Silence hace un par de años. ¿Qué recuerdas de esa gira?
Nos lo pasamos genial con todos en esa gira y nos gustó mucho, finalmente, volver a tocar en España. ¡Esperamos volver pronto!
SofN: Imagina por un momento que tuvieras el poder de poder reunir en una misma gira a 5 bandas, actuales o no, siendo Caliban los cabezas de cartel. ¿Qué otras bandas / artistas elegirías? ¡Dale!
Caliban, Korn, Slipknot, Tool y Biffy Clyro. Eso sería genial, pero estaría bien simplemente abrir ese tour… jajaja.

SofN: Guten Tag, Andreas! How are you doing?
Hola, I’m good… thanks!
SofN: A few weeks ago you released a brand new single, “Before Later Comes Never”, of your upcoming brand new album Elements (2018), which, according to your website, is “a proof that the Germans are growing beyond the borders of the genre”. What can we expect?
Elements (2018) is an album of more extremes. We have some very heavy songs on it, but also some very “soft/melodical” songs with some new instrumental elements/influences.
SofN: What’s new in your new material, if we compare it with Gravity (2016)?
Like I said before, more extremes and I do all the vocals for the very first time.
SofN: By the way, a whole cast of all-stars have passed behind the microphones as collaborations. Where or from whom did the idea that Matthi (Nasty), Sebastian Biesler (Eskimo Cowboy), Chris McMahon (Thy Art Is Murder) or Brian “Head” Welch (Korn) gave up their vocal strings for the new album? Any other surprise?
The whole band I would say. We talked about possible guest singers and those names came up… we also have Christoph “Kotsche” Koterzina from Callejon on our album… on our special edition there are two more tracks and one of them is “Forsaken Horizon” on which he did the clean parts back in the days as well.
SofN: What would happen if the manager of David Hasselhoff contacted you for a hypothetical collaboration in the face of your next album?
Would be funny, but I think we would say “no”… except we would do a cover of “Looking For Freedom”… ; )

We have a very good music/metal scene in Germany, some very talented musicians and very true fans who keep us cooking… and I think that’s all you need!

- Writting/creating new material: to get in the right mood, finding topics to write about
- Recording: to be done in time… LOL
- Touring: to not get wasted in the first 2 days…
SofN: This year is your 20th anniversary as a band. Do you have something special planned?
That was last year, but no, we don’t have any plans for a big celebration…
SofN: Looking back in time, do you think you’ve accomplish all your goals?
I don’t have any real goals with Caliban… I’m happy to get the chance to be a part of this… happy to still be on the road, living a dream… but one thing I want to accomplish is to play in a couple more countries I’ve never been before, like Africa or Iceland…
SofN: What singers have influenced the most in your way of singing?
That’s hard to answer… back in the days, when I started, I was a lot into Unbroken, Korn, Machine Head, Converge… but I really don’t know if any any of these bands/singers influenced my style of singing.
SofN: The last time you visited Barcelona it was with Suicide Silence a couple of years ago. What do you remember about that tour?
We had a great time with everyone on this tour and I was happy to finally play some shows in Spain again. Hope we’re back soon!
SofN: Imagine for a moment that you have the power to be able to reunite in a same tour 5 bands, current or not, being Caliban the headliners. What other bands / artists would you choose? Go!

Tipo peculiar y entrañable criado a medio camino entre Seattle, Sunset Boulevard y las zonas más húmedas de Louisiana. Si coges un mapa, y si cuentas con ciertos conocimientos matemáticos, verás que el resultado es una zona indeterminada entre los estados de Wyoming, South Dakota y Nebraska. Una zona que, por cierto, no he visitado jamás en la vida. No soy nada de fiar y, aunque me gusta “casi todo lo rock/metal”, prefiero las Vans antes que las J’hayber.
