Entrevista a Axel Rudi Pell: ‘La gente que dice que siempre hago lo mismo puede besarme el culo’

Hola Axel, soy Jordi Tàrrega de Science of Noise desde Barcelona. Hice la crítica de tu último álbum y, desde mi punto de vista, es el mejor desde Mystica. Canciones como «Gunfire», «Wings of the Storm» o «Bad Reputation» son brillantes. ¿Estás contento con las reacciones de la prensa y de los fans?

¡Si, absolutamente! Me encanta el disco, cada segundo de esta obra, puedes escucharlo todo del tirón, no es para nada aburrido, así que me gusta cada canción, y sí, ¡es increíble! (muy sobreactuado).

Debido a la crisis del coronavirus, es difícil ver el futuro más cercano, pero… ¿qué canciones de Sign of the Times crees que podrás tocar en vivo cuando se pueda volver a los escenarios?

Oh, no lo sé, no tengo ni idea, probablemente todas las canciones (risas). Podríamos tocar el álbum completo. Supongo que, definitivamente, «Gunfire», supongo que «Bad Reputation», la canción principal que es «Sign of the Times», probablemente también «Wings of the Storm»… No tengo ni idea en este momento, podrían ser estos temas perfectamente. Quizás también hagamos «Into the Fire», no lo sé.

Hay una parte del reggae en «Living a Dream». La última vez que te recuerdo tocando reggae fue en «Cashbah». ¿Por qué este estilo en un disco tuyo?

(Risas) Sí, en «Cashbah», pero la tocábamos solo en directo, nunca la hicimos en estudio. La razón por la que lo hice es porque ya tenía esta canción lista, «Living in a Dream», y descubrí que, tal vez, sería una buena idea el tener un estilo diferente en una canción, ya sabes. Tomé una mi guitarra en mi casa, lo intenté un poco, toqué un reggae, y… no sé por qué lo hice, tal vez fue una señal desde arriba. «Mmmm, tal vez pueda escribir una pequeña parte de reggae para comenzar una canción«, me dije. Entonces, llamé a los otros chicos diciéndoles que en el próximo disco habría una parte del reggae, y ninguno me creyó. Ellos dijeron: «¡Vamos! ¿Estás bromeando?” (risas). Entonces, cuando fuimos al estudio para grabar, todos se sorprendieron: «Oh, realmente hay una parte del reggae«. Sí, es lo que os dije … (risas).

Es muy original, ¡pero luego la canción suena como Deep Purple!

¿De Verdad? Creo que está más cerca de Uriah Heep, ¡pero Deep Purple ya me va bien!

He visto que en estos días estás tocando algunas canciones en casa llamadas «Quarantined 1”, “Quarantined 2”… Canciones que son completamente nuevas. ¿Es solo un regalo para los fans confinados en sus hogares o tal vez estas canciones podrían estar en el próximo disco?

Es solo un regalo para los fans porque… estamos viviendo momentos difíciles debido al coronavirus, así que decidí editar algo intermedio, entre discos y giras, algo especial para los seguidores. No estoy de gira, así que es para que disfrutemos un poco. Afortunadamente esto es lo que estoy haciendo en este momento. Disfruta, eso es todo, y no está planeado en absoluto que este material vaya a aparecer editado en disco.

¿Te grabas tocando en tu casa o es en el estudio?

No, es en mi casa. Definitivamente está grabado en mi hogar. En mi cuarto de trabajo.

En la portada del álbum hay un reloj con 2 minutos “después” de la medianoche… ¿Es un guiño o un tributo a la canción de Iron Maiden (“Two minutes to Midnight”)?

No, definitivamente no. Apenas conozco la canción de Iron Maiden. Es sencillamente que, cuando miras el reloj y ves que pasan dos minutos de la medianoche, te haces una imagen sobre cómo está situación en este momento en nuestro mundo. Es sobre el cambio climático, esas guerras religiosas que siguen y siguen, algo muy extraño, todo lo que ha acaecido con el coronavirus… Y lo de los dos minutos después de la medianoche es que tal vez nos diga que ya es demasiado tarde para que los humanos vuelvan a tomar el timón, ya sabes, eso es todo.

Estoy de acuerdo. Leí sobre cómo conociste a Johnny Gioeli y me parece increíble… Chateaste durante un año, pero nunca hablabais por teléfono. He oído hablar sobre tu encuentro en la estación de tren… ¿Qué pensaste la primera vez que lo viste? ¿Sentiste que contratabas al mejor cantante posible para tu proyecto?

Definitivamente sí. Tan pronto como Johnny fue contratado en la banda nos pusimos a trabajar en el primer álbum que hicimos juntos: Oceans of Time, en 1998, lo recuerdo… Él demostró que tenía la voz perfecta para mi estilo de música y realmente amo como canta. Y disfrutar de ello… esto es lo realmente genial. El problema hubiera sido si su voz no fuera lo suficientemente buena (risas).

Me encanta tu teclita Ferdy Doernberg. Lo conocí en Barcelona hace y varios años y soy muy fan de Rough Silk. Supongo que él es una parte importante de la banda como Johnny y Volker. ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre él como músico?

Es un gran músico y puede tocar instrumentos muy diferentes. Puede tocar el piano muy bien, los teclados, la steel guitar. Él no toca la guitarra en mi banda, pero hace todo tipo de cosas en sus proyectos en solitario. Puede incluso tocar la trompeta si tú se lo pides. Es genial. Toca también el acordeón, y qué más… ¡No lo sé! Es un multi-instrumentista y es realmente genial tenerlo además que es un tipo muy rápido trabajando en el estudio. No tienes ni que explicarle todos los acordes que hay que tocar en la grabación de una nueva canción. ¡Así es Ferdy!

¿Sabes si sigue tocando en Rough Silk?

No lo sé, no tengo ni idea.

Algunas personas opinan que Axel Rudi Pell tiene su propio sonido, pero que algunos de sus discos son muy similares y que repites algunas palabras en tus letras como “storm”, “reputation”, “time”, “fool” o “fire». Tienes un sonido propio, eso es evidente. ¿Qué les dirías a toda esa gente que piensan que tus álbumes se parecen mucho?

¡Pues que ya pueden ir besándome el culo! (Risas) Realmente no tengo idea la verdad. Ya sabes que, por supuesto, hay un estilo de música muy marcado en mis discos, un estilo de interpretación… Y no quiero cambiarlo, eso sería estúpido. Ya sabes, por ejemplo, el caso de AC/DC… Es la misma situación que con AC/DC pero a nadie le importa. Todo el mundo espera que suenen como siempre y en nuestros discos es exactamente lo que uno quieres escuchar. Sí, es un LP similar pero no me importan una mierda todas estas opiniones.

¿Es cierto que comenzaste en el negocio del heavy metal trabajando en la revista Metal Hammer en los años 80?

Ah sí, fue después de dejarlo con Steeler, al final del grupo, antes de comenzar mi carrera en solitario estuve en la revista Metal Hammer alemana, este dato es correcto. Era editor de fotos-maquetador, no escribía nada, pero debía editar y obtener todas las fotos para la producción de la revista. Me estuve encargando de eso un buen tiempo. Estuve en la revista Metal Hammer desde 1987 hasta 1993, durante seis años.

Actualmente hay muchas bandas que están tocando sus mejores discos enteros. Todavía no es tu caso, pero… ¿Crees que podrías hacerlo en un futuro? ¿Qué discos de Axel Rudi Pell crees que podrían funcionar tocados en su totalidad?

No, no me gusta. No me gusta para nada porque, bueno… ya sé que varias bandas están haciendo eso pero… yo toco de todos los discos. Si toca todo un álbum antiguo, no puedes tocar del nuevo. Quiero tocar de todos los discos y del nuevo también, y eso sería una buena idea (risas). No quiero cambiar “los tiempos” porque la gente viene a nuestros shows esperando canciones especiales. Ellos quieren escuchar «Rock the Nation», «The Masquerade Ball» u «Oceans of Time». No les puedo decir: «No, estamos haciendo una gira con los dos primeros álbumes seguidos“… y todos me mirarían y pensarían: «¿qué demonios está haciendo? ¡Está loco!» No me gusta en absoluto esta idea.

Cuando escribes Axel Rudi Pell en Youtube, la primera canción que aparece es tu versión de Leonard Cohen «Hallelujah». Más de 10 millones de visitas. Excelente versión de una de las baladas más bellas de la historia. ¿Por qué elegiste esta y qué significa para ti?

La elegí porque amo esta canción y amo la estructura y su melodía. Ya hace muchos, muchos y largos años perdura esta composición y quería hacerla. Es una buena melodía y necesitaba hacer otros arreglos, un poco más rockeros que la original, y a todos les encantó. La gente decía: «Genial, es muy buena idea«, especialmente por parte de Johnny. Le encantó la idea de cubrir «Hallelujah». Fuimos muy directos.

Echando un vistazo a todas tus portadas, parece que te encantan los colores morado, azul y negro. ¿Por qué siempre juegas con estos colores?

Ahhh, ¿tú crees?… (silencio tenso) Yo pienso que las cubiertas antiguas, en los años 90, sí estaban dominadas por el púrpura, negro y azul, pero todas las últimas… tienen colores diferentes. El nuevo, por ejemplo, es rojo, negro y plateado, el anterior es negro, rojo, plateado, gris… y en el anterior hay negro, un poco amarillo… así que hay más colores, lo siento, hay variedad.

Sí, tienes razón, eso sucedía en los años 90. Escuché en una vieja entrevista que Axel Rudi Pell siempre tiene una grabadora con él y cuando se le ocurre una buena melodía, la graba, y un tiempo más tarde, desarrolla una canción. ¿Sigues trabajando de esta manera?

Sí, absolutamente, todavía lo sigo haciendo porque es la mejor manera. No puedo sentarme y escribir 10 canciones de una tirada… Esto no es posible. No puedo ser creativo si solo me siento y pienso en las canciones. Entonces, a veces tomo la guitarra para tocar un poco y me viene a la mente algo y… «waww, esto suena genial, grabémoslo«. Entonces, voy recolectando pequeñas ideas con melodías y, al final, juntas hacen la verdadera canción.

¿Estás planeando otro álbum de baladas?

¡No, no, no! Esto va a tardar. Ballads V salió en 2017, por lo que Ballads VI probablemente no aparecerá en los próximos cuatro o cinco años (risas).

Conocí a mucha gente a las que no les gusta el heavy metal pero le encantan tus discos de baladas.

Sí, lo sé. Pues tendrán que esperar un poco más.

¿Los discos de baladas venden más que tus discos “normales”?

No, definitivamente los álbumes normales se están vendiendo más que los discos de baladas.

En Ballads V hay la canción «Love’s Holding On» con Bonnie Tyler. ¿Fue un sueño hecho realidad grabar un tema con Bonnie?

Absolutamente sí, porque, sabes, busqué una voz similar para esta canción, estilo Bonnie. Johnny, por supuesto, canta un poco, y estábamos pensando que, tal vez, podría hacerlo con él. Pero empezamos a pensar luego: ¿a quién podríamos tener para esta canción? Le dije: «La número 1 es Bonnie Tyler, pero no estoy seguro de si le gustaría hacerlo porque no la conozco”. Entonces, tenía el mail de su manager y le envié un correo electrónico. Él dijo: “por supuesto, a Bonnie le interesaría la canción, pero a ella le debe gustar la canción. Si no le gusta, no lo hará. No importa todo el dinero del mundo, ¿de acuerdo?”.

¡Tuvimos que escribir una canción para ella! (Risas) «¿Está lista la canción?» me preguntó y le dije … «todavía no» (risas). Ok, volveré a recordar esa melodía de todos modos. Entonces, escribí la canción, Johnny hizo una pequeña demostración con todas las voces. Luego fuimos a ver su show en Alemania en 2016. Bonnie Tyler estaba ante mi y yo estaba en contacto con el manager, y luego, fuimos al backstage, y después del show pude hablar con Bonnie. “Esta es la canción, ¿te gustaría escucharla ahora?” Y ella dijo: “No, la escucharé mañana. No quiero decirte mi decisión en este momento, pero recibirás noticias de mi manager«. Dije “ok«. Y dejé el CD allí con la demo … y me fui a casa. Y al día siguiente recibí una llamada de su manager, y me dijo: “¡Bonnie ama la canción, a ella le encantó! ¿Cuándo tiene que grabarla? (risas) y tres meses después la grabamos. Es una persona muy amable, absolutamente profesional y es muy fácil trabajar con ella, así que… fue un gran trabajo.

Fantástico… ¿y hay otro cantante con el que grabarías una canción como con Bonnie Tyler?

No hay planes similares para el futuro con ningún cantante.

¿Y si te pregunto quién es el mejor cantante de la historia para ti?

El mejor cantante de todos los tiempos es Ronnie James Dio, definitivamente.

Para mi también (risas). Tuve la oportunidad de asistir a tus conciertos en España (hace muchos años en Moncofa, en Rock Fest y dos veces en Wacken, siempre en el escenario más grande. ¿Es Wacken un sitio especial para ti?

Definitivamente sí porque hay mucha gente allí. Es el festival de heavy metal más grande de Europa… y creo que, posiblemente, de todo el mundo, así que es genial tocar allí. Cuando estás en el escenario y miras… Está lleno de gente. Gente, gente, más gente… y mucha más gente (risas). Es genial y absolutamente fantástico el tocar allí.

Algo que me encanta es que tus músicos permanecen contigo durante décadas. Pero, ¿por qué rompiste con Mike Terrana?

Es muy fácil: porque teníamos planes de grabación hace ya varios años, en 2013, y dije: «Mike, después del disco haremos otra gira» y dijo «Ok«. Y lo anotó en el calendario, la gira con todas las fechas, en su agenda. Y luego, me llamó un par de semanas antes de que comenzáramos el disco diciendo que no podía ir a la gira porque «Estaré de gira con Tarja Turunen«. Y yo le dije: «Pero si te dije a mis fechas antes«. Pero dijo de nuevo: «Sí, pero Tarja es mi principal prioridad«. Entonces, dije: «Ok, si esta es tu decisión, estás fuera de mi banda«. Tarja era su principal prioridad. Él conocía mis fechas antes. Afortunadamente, encontré a Bobby Rondinelli muy rápidamente después de tuve despedir a Mike. Entonces, fue todo muy fácil para mí.

Es algo que me encanta, que tu formación es siempre fantástica.

Sí, gracias.

Y venga, la última: ¿Es Rainbow tu banda favorita?

Sí, es mi banda favorita. Absolutamente, porque me encanta la magia de Ronnie James Dio y la guitarra de Ritchie Blackmore. Ambos juntos liderando la banda fueron fantásticos. Pero siempre hablando de la primera formación, eh. No estoy tan metido en lo que hicieron luego en Rainbow entre las etapas de Turner y Doogie White. Quiero decir, Doogie también estuvo muy bien, me gustó la gira a mediados de los 90, pero mi etapa favorita es con Dio. (Risas)

¿Y si tuviera que preguntarte sobre la mejor canción de Rainbow?

¡Ooooh, Jesucristo! Esto podría ser largo porque me encantan muchas canciones, ya sabes, probablemente …

«Temple of the King»? (Axel la toca mucho en los directos)

No, definitivamente no. Posiblemente «Stargazer», «Light in the Black» o «Tarot Woman». Y «Gates of Babylon», ¡esta también es genial! No puedo decidir, lo siento (risas).

Hello, this is Jordi Tàrrega from Barcelona for Science of Noise.net. I reviewed your last album and, from my point, of view it is the best one since Mystica. Songs like “Gunfire”, “Wings of the Storm” or “Bad Reputation” are brilliant. Are you happy with press and fans opinions?

¡Yes, absolutely! I love the album and every second in it, you can listen it in a row it is not getting boring after all so I like every song, and yes, it is awesome!

Due coronavirus crisis it is hard to see the future but, which songs from Sign of the Timesdo you think you can play live in a near future?

Oh, I don’t know, I don’t have a clue, probably every song (laughs). We could play the album in complete. I guess that definitely “Gunfire”, I guess “Bad Reputation”, the title track “Sign of the Times”, probably “Wings of the Storm”… I don’t have a clue at the moment, it could be like that. Maybe we do “Into the Fire” too, I don’t know.

There is a reggae part in “Living a Dream”. Last time I remember that you played a reggae part was in “Cashbah”. Why a reggae?

(Laughs) Yes in “Cashbah” but we played only live, we never did it on a record with “Cashbah”. The reason was because I had this song ready, “Living in a Dream” and I found to myself that, maybe, it was a good idea to have a different style in a song, you know. I picked out my guitar in my house, I try a little bit, and I played a reggae, and I don’t know why, maybe it was a sign from above. “Mmmm, maybe I can write a little reggae part to start a song with it”. So, I called the other guys telling them that in the next record will be a reggaepart, and nobody believed me. They said: “Come on! You are kidding?” (laughs). So, when we went to the studio for recording, everybody was surprised: “Oh there is really a reggae par!t”. Yes, is what I told you… (laughs).

It is something original, but later the song sounds like Deep Purple!

Really? I think that is closer to Uriah Heep, but Deep Purple is right!

I have seen that in these days you are playing some songs called “Quarantined 1, 2…” Songs that are brand new. It is just a present for the fans at their homes or maybe these songs could be in the next album?

It is just a present for the fans at all, because… we are living in difficult times at the moment due the coronavirus, so, I decided just to edit something in between, something special for the fans. I’m not touring, so it is just to enjoy a little bit. This is what I’m doing at the moment, hopefully. Enjoy, that’s all, it is not planned to be on a record.

Are you playing at your home or it is in the studio?

No, I was in my home. It is definitely recorded in my house. In my working room.

In the front cover of the album there is a clock with 2 minutes past midnight… This is a wink or a tribute to Iron Maiden’s song?

No, definitely not. I don’t know about Iron Maiden song at all. It is just… when you look at the clock, two minutes after midnight only says that this is the situation at the moment at the world. It is due climate change, religion wars going on and on, a very strange thing, and of course what the coronavirus is doing… And the two minutes after midnight, maybe, wants to say that it is a little too late for human to get back in the wheel, you know, that is all, I don’t know.

I agree… I read about how you met Johnny Gioeli. It is incredible… You chat for one year long but never talked by phone. I’ve heard about your meet in the railway station… What did you think the first time you stared at him? Did you feel that you have hired the best singer for your project?

Definitely yes. As soon as Johnny was hired in the band, the first album we did together was Oceans of Time, back in 1998, I remember… he demonstrate that he had the perfect voice for my kind of music and I really loved his voice. Enjoying… that is great, that is cool. The problem was if his voice was not enough good (laughs).

Johnny Gioeli is the best singer for your albums but, before you chose him, which were your (other) favorite singers to hire?

With Johnny Gioeli was enough! (laughs)

I love Ferdy Doernberg I met him years ago in Barcelona and I’m a Rough Silk fan. I suppose that he is an important part of the band as Johnny and Volker. What is your opinion about him as a musician?

He is a great musician and he can play very different instruments. He can play the piano very good, the keyboards, the steel guitar. He is not playing the steel guitar in my band but he does all kind of things in all his solo stuff. He can blow the trumpet if you want too. He is great. He plays the accordion, and what else… I don’t know! He is a multi-instrumentalist and he is really cool and very fast in the studio. You don’t have to explain all the chords between a new song. He is very good!

I loved his band Rough Silk. Does is he still playing in Rough Silk?

I don’t know, I don’t have any clue.

Some people could say that Axel has his own sound but some albums are very similar and you repeat some words like storm, reputation, time, fools or fire are usually in your lyrics. You have a trademark, obviously. What do you say to all these people who think that your albums are really closer and have similar songs?

They can kiss my ass! (laughs) I don’t really clue because, of course, there is a music style of music in our LPs, a kind of playing… I don’t want to change it, that would be stupid. You know, for example, AC/DC… It is the same thing on AC/DC but nobody cares about it. Everybody expected to be sounding like them and in our record is exactly what you want to hear, it is a similar LP, ok. I don’t give a shit about these opinions.

Does it is true that you started in heavy metal business working in Metal Hammer Magazine in the 80’s?

Oh yes, it was after my quit of Steeler, at the end of the band, before I started my solo career in Metal Hammer Magazine in Germany, that is right. I was a photo editor, I didn’t write anything but I was a photo editor who was to mix and get all the photos for the production of the magazine. I was taking care of that. I was in Metal Hammer Magazine from 1987 to 1993, for six years long.

Currently there are a lot of bands that are playing his best albums in his entirety. It is not your case yet, but… Do you think it could be possible in a near future? Which Axel Rudi Pell’s albums do you think that could work played in its entirety?

No, I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all because… I know that several bands are doing that. I play from all records. If you play an old album you can’t play the new one. I want to play from all records and, obviously, from the new one… and that would be a good idea (laughs). I don’t want to “change time” because people are coming to our shows expecting some special songs. They want to hear “Rock the Nation”, “The Masquerade Ball” or “Oceans of Time”. I can’t say: “No, we are doing a tour with the two first albums in a row… and everybody would be looking and thinking: “what the fuck he is doing? He is crazy!” I don’t like it at all the idea.

When you check Axel Rudi Pell in Youtube the first one song that appears is your Leonard Cohen’ cover “Hallelujah”. More than 10 million visits. Excellent cover for one of the most beautiful ballads ever. Why did you choose this one and what means for you this song?

I chose it because I love this song and I love the structure and the melody, for many, many, long years I over last that song. It is a good melody and I needed to do another arrangement, a little more rocky than the original one, and everybody loved it. People said: “Cool, this is a good idea”, specially Johnny. He loved the idea to cover “Hallelujah”.

Taking a look to all your covers it seems that you love purple, blue and black colors. Why do you always play with these colors?

Ahhh… I think the ancient covers in the 90’s had purple, black and blue but all the last ones… have different colors. The new one for example is red and black and silver, the one before it was black, red, silver, grey… the one before it was black, a little yellow… so, there are more colors, sorry.

Yes, you are right, that happens in the 90’s. I heard from you in an old interview that Axel Rudi Pell always has a tape recorder with him and when a good melody came to his mind he recorded it and some later developed a song. Do you still work in this way?

Yes, absolutely, I still doing. Because it is the best way. I can’t sit down and write 10 songs or what else… This is not possible. I can’t be creative if I just sit and think about the songs. So, sometimes I pick up the guitar playing just to play a little bit and comes to my mind “waww, this sounds cool, let’s record it”. So, I am collecting little ideas with melodies and, at the end, together make the real song out.

Are you planning a Ballads album again?

¡No, no, no! It will be far in the future. Ballads V was issued in 2017, so, Ballads VI probably will not appear in the next four or five years (laughs)

I met a lot of people who don’t like heavy metal but love your ballads.

Yes, I know. They have to wait a little long.

Are these albums better sellers than your regular albums?

No, definitely regular albums are selling more than the Ballads records.

In Ballads V there is “Love’s Holding On” with Bonnie Tyler. Does it was a dream come true to record a song with Bonnie?

Absolutely because you know, I searched for a similar voice for this song, in Bonnie’s style. Johnny of course, sing a bit, and we were thinking that, maybe, we could do it with him. But we started to think: Who could we get for this song? I said: “Number 1 is Bonnie Tyler but I’m not sure if she would like to do it because I didn’t meet her. So, I got the mail of his manager and I send an Email to him. He said: “of course, Bonnie would be interested in the song, but she has to like the song. If she doesn’t like the song she won’t do it. It doesn’t matter all the money in the world, ok?

We had to write a song for her! (laughs) “Does it is the song ready?” he said, and I said… “not yet” (laughs). Ok, melody will back to me anyway. So, I wrote the song, a little demo with all vocals were done by Johnny.Then we went out to see her show in Germany in 2016. Bonnie Tyler was before me and I was in contact with the manager, and then, we went to the backstage, and after the show I spoke to Bonnie. “This is the song, would you like to hear now? And she said: “No, I will listen to tomorrow. I don’t want to tell you my decision right now, but you will have news from my manager”. I said “ok”. And I left the CD there with the demo… and I went home. And the next day I had a call from the manager and he said: “Bonnie loves the song, she loved it! When she has to record it?” (laughs) and three months later we recorded it. She is a very nice person, absolutely professional and it is very easy to work with her, so… great work.

Fantastic… and there is another singer with whom you would record a song as with Bonnie Tyler?

There are no similar plans for the future with any singer.

And if I ask you about who is the best singer ever?

The best singer EVER is Ronnie James Dio, definitely.

Me too (laughs) I had the opportunity to attend at your concerts in Spain (many years ago in Moncofa, in Rock Fest and twice at Wacken, always in the biggest stage. Does it is Wacken a special place for you?

Definitely yes because there are so many people. It is the biggest heavy metal festival in Europe… and in the world I think, so it is really great to play there. Something that I love is that your musicians remain with you for decades. But, why did you break up with Mike Terrana?

It was very easy because we had record plans a couple of years ago, in 2013, and I said: “Mike, after the record we will do another tour” and he said “Ok”. And he wrote it down in the schedule, the tour with all the dates, in a calendar or whatever. And then, he gave me a call a couple of weeks before we started the record saying that he couldn’t go to the tour because “I will be on the road with Tarja Turunen” I said him “But I told my dates before” but he said again: “Yes but Tarja is my main priority”. So, I said: “Ok, if this is your way you are out of my band”. Tarja was his main priority. He knew my dates before. Luckily, I found Bobby Rondinelli very quick after I had to fire Mike. So, it was easy for me.

One thing that I love is that you have a fantastic line-up, as always…

Thank you, yes.

And the last one: Does it is Rainbow your favorite band?

Yes, it is my favorite band, absolutely, because I love the magical Ronnie James Dio and the guitar of Ritchie Blackmore. Both together leading the band were fantastic. But always talking about the first line-up. I’m not so much involved in the latest Rainbow between Turner and Doogie White. I mean Doogie was ok too, I liked the tour in the middle of the 90’s, but my favorite one was Dio. He wasn’t bad at all but anyway (laughs).

And if I had to ask you about the best Rainbow’s song?

Ooooh, Jesus Christ! This it could be long because I love many songs, you know, probably…

Maybe “Temple of the King”?

No, definitely not. Probably “Stargazer”, “Light in the Black” or “Tarot Woman”. And “Gates of Babylon”, this one is great too! I can’t decide, sorry (laughs).
