Entrevista a Blaze Bayley: ‘Me encantaría cantar junto a Iron Maiden una vez más’

SofN: ¡Hola Blaze! Antes que nada, muchas gracias por invertir algo de tu tiempo contestando estas preguntas para nosotros. Me tendrás que perdonar por una entrevista algo larga, pero la verdad es que no me he podido contener 🙂 ¿Cömo estás? ¿Cómo te está tratando el invierno inglés?

No he visto mucho del invierno inglés ya que acabo de volver de gira por Latinoamérica y ahora estoy ya en la Europa continental. Lo peor del invierno es la preocupación de no coger un resfriado o una gripe que puedan afectar mi voz si me infecto.

SofN: Estás a punto de editar el CD / DVD «Live in France», grabado el año pasado en Chez Paulette, una sala cercana a Nancy, en Francia. Últimamente parece que sea una tradición que saques un disco en directo cada cinco años. ¿Qué podemos esperar de éste y por qué escogiste exactamente esta sala para grabarlo?

Chez Paulette es un lugar con el que tengo una larga y gran historia, y el promotor que programa mis conciertos ahí es un amigo y un socio de confianza. El público suele ser genial, la sala trata a la gente muy bien y la atmósfera es fantástica. Se ha acabado por convertir en una segunda casa y siempre lo siento como un lugar importante. Por eso quise grabar allí, para intentar capturar algo de la magia que siento cada vez que toco en esa sala.

SofN: El año pasado publicaste «The Redemption of William Black», el último disco de la ambiciosa y exitosa trilogía Infinite Entanglement, que ha acabado saliendo a disco por año. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de composición y grabación de un proyecto tan grande? ¿Estaba ya en tu mente antes de empezar con él? ¿Crees que se trata del logro más ambicioso de tu carrera?

Infinite Entanglement ha sido posible gracias a mis fans. El apoyo de mis maravillosos fans fue lo más importante de toda la trilogía. Estoy escribiendo un libro, y la historia que expplico en la trilogía proviene de allí. Creo que sí, que la trilogía es el mayor logro de mi carrera.

SofN: ¿Y ahora qué? Considerando que sueles sacar música nueva bastante a menudo, ¿cuándo podemos esperar un nuevo disco de Blaze Bayley y qué dirección va a tomar, tanto musical como conceptualmente?

Saqué un nuevo disco acústico clásico en noviembre (December Wind) y ahora saldrá Live in France en disco y en DVD. Estoy pensando en escribir y grabar un nuevo disco de metal para publicarlo en 2020, y antes que eso estaremos girando intensamente por Europa y América del Norte. Empezaremos a componer a finales de marzo, así que no tendré una idea clara de la dirección creativa que vamos a tomar hasta entonces.

SofN: Como dices, durante la primera mitad del año tenéis la agenda llena de giras: por Suramérica, Europa, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos. Luego tienes los festivales de verano e, imagino, más fechas en otoño. ¿Cuáles son tu grandes planes, expectativas y retos para este 2019? ¿Qué te gustaría ver cuando vuelvas la cabeza al final de año?

Mis fans hacen posible que yo pueda vivir mi sueño de ser un cantante de heavy metal. Hago meets and greets gratuitos en todos los conciertos en los que soy cabeza de cartel, así que si llego a final de 2019 y veo un montón de buenos shows encontrándome con mis fantásticos fans, eso será lo más importante para mí.

SofN: Después de tenido a una cantidad casi inacabable de músicos en la banda a lo largo de los años, últimamente parece que has establecido una asociación estable y fructífera con los chicos de Absolva, una banda que se ha hecho un poco de nombre por su propio lado también (Luke, por ejemplo, es también el bajista de Iced Earth). ¿Es más fácil trabajar con una banda completa ya existente que tener que buscar músicos uno por uno tú mismo? Por lo que sé, ellos no son solo una banda de apoyo, sino que participan activamente en la composición de tu música. ¿Ves potencial para que esta colaboración sea a largo plazo?

Absolva han estado conmigo desde hace más de cinco años, y se trata del line-up más estable en la historia de mi carrera en solitario. En conjunto tenemos un buen equipo ahora, y es más fácil trabajar así. Trabajé codo con codo con Chris Appleton componiendo la trilogía y continuaremos haciéndolo así de cara al próximo disco.

SofN: Siempre te esfuerzas al máximo para estar cerca de tus seguidores, pasando todo el tiempo posible con ellos tanto antes como después de tus conciertos. ¿Crees que esta esencia y esta cercanía se está perdiendo últimamente por culpa de la mercantilización excesiva de la industria musical, especialmente en bandas más jóvenes?

Como artista independiente, mis seguidores son lo más importante, y ellos son los que me permiten hacer lo que hago. Ellos hacen posible que me pase el tiempo girando por el mundo y grabando discos, así que para mí no hay nada más prioritario que ellos. Creo que ésta es la mejor manera de hacer funcionar las cosas como artista independiente. No me importa demasiado qué hacer otros artistas o qué pasa con la industria musical. En mi caso, en cada concierto como cabeza de cartel voy a encontrarme con mis fans sin hacerles pagar nada.

SofN: Algunas de tus últimas portadas, camisetas y pósters de gira han estado diseñados, precisamente, por el artista español Alberto Quinteros (el hombre tras la marca Akirant Illustration), que también ha trabajado últimamente con los propios Iron Maiden. ¿Cómo empezaste a trabajar con él y qué es lo que te gusta especialmente sobre su arte?

Alberto es un artista magnífico y un fan de verdad de la música. Le envié letras, títulos y maquetas y hablamos sobre la historia, el estilo de cómico para las camisetas de esta gira y la portada del disco en directo. Es un honor y un privilegio poder trabajar con alguien tan talentoso.

SofN: Este verano estarás en el Rock the Coast Festival, un nuevo festival de metal que tendrá lugar por primera vez en el sur de España. Al igual que en otros festivales europeos, has anunciado que tocarás un set basado completamente en canciones de Iron Maiden para celebrar el 25 aniversario desde que entraste en la banda. ¿Por qué has decidido hacer esto precisamente ahora (y no en otros «grandes» aniversarios)? ¿Llevabas pensándolo ya desde hacía tiempo?

He estado pensando en hacerlo durante estos últimos tres o cuatro años, pero lo pospuse hasta que sentí que el momento era el correcto. Ahora, con el 25 aniversario de mi entrada en Iron Maiden y con un catálogo en solitario de once discos, pensé que era el momento de hacerlo. Mi estancia en Iron Maiden fue una época mágica de mi carrera y estos conciertos especiales son una gran forma de celebrarlo. Entrar en Iron Maiden fue algo tremendamente positivo para mí, y aprendí mucho de ello. Puedes escuchar claramente la influencia de mis años en Iron Maiden en la trilogía de Infinite Entanglement.

SofN: También has anunciado que se trata de una oportunidada única para ver este tipo de show, pero si es tan exitoso como es probable que vaya a ser, ¿considerarías una gira completa con este formato? ¿Cómo crees que va a ser la respuesta de los fans, tanto en ventas como en excitación? ¿Qué tipo de feedback has recibido por el momento?

Hasta ahora los fans se han mostrado excitados y positivos. Tenemos programados unos pocos conciertos similares hacia finales de 2019 pero no existe la idea de continuar más allá. Lo más importante es que será muy divertido volver a cantar esas viejas canciones de nuevo.

SofN: Puedo imaginar que para cualquier músico y fan del metal, ser capaz de formar parte de una banda como Iron Maiden es una experiencia que no tiene precio. De todas maneras, ¿crees que de alguna manera esto puede haber sido una experiencia negativa en tu carrera futura, ya que mucha gente simplemente te considera ese «ex-cantante de Iron Maiden»? ¿Estás un poco cansado de tener que cargar siempre con ese «apellido»? Si pudieras hacer algun tipo de fantasía-ficción, y considerando que Wolfsbane era una de las bandas más prometedoras del Reino Unido cuando los dejaste en 1994, ¿dónde crees que estarías ahora como música si nunca hubieras entrado en Iron Maiden?

La oportunidad de trabajar a lado de Steve Harris fue increíble, y también lo fue estar al frente de la banda de heavy metal más importante del mundo. Aprendí muchísimo durante ese tiempo, y también desarrollé my voz y mis capacidades vocales. La mayor parte de mi experiencia durante ese tiempo fue positiva y el impacto en mi carrera posterior también lo es. Es imposible decir qué hubiera pasado con mi carrera si no hubiera formado parte de la banda.

SofN: ¿Crees que los zapatos de Bruce Dickinson eran sencillamente demasiado grandes? No digo que no tuvieras la habilidad o el talento para hacerlo, pero él era (y aún es) uno de los frontman más icónicos de la historia del heavy metal. ¿A qué retos tuviste que enfrentarte? ¿Fue mas difícil de lo que esperabas? ¿Hay algo de lo que te arrepientas o que te gustara que hubiera sido distinto?

Bruce siempre ha sido muy amable y generoso conmigo, y es un cantante maravilloso. Me deseó lo mejor cuando entré en Iron Maiden, me ha entrevistado cuando presentaba su propio programa de radio más tarde e incluso me permitió usar su siulador de vuelo para uno de mis videoclips recientes. Ambos compartimos el conocimiento de cuán duro es el trabajo de estar al frente de Iron Maiden, pero no fue ni más ni menos de lo que esperaba.

SofN: Hablando de estos dos álbumes que grabaste con Iron Maiden, en mi opinión Virtual XI es un poco irregular, pero The X Factor es un gran disco que aún no goza del reconocimiento que se merece. ¿Cómo ves estos álbumes y las circunstancias a su alrededor con la perspectiva del tiempo? ¿Como crees que se comparan con el resto de la discografía de la banda?

Estoy muy orgulloso de los dos álbumes que grabé con Iron Maiden, y ambos parecen marcar el principio de la época progresiva de la banda. Tienen un aire oscuro, y creo que suponen una manera distinta de mirar el universo Iron Maiden. Todo el poder, la melodía y la gran capacidad musical que los fans esperan de la banda estan ahí, pero en vez de la majestuosidad de la voz de Bruce Dickinson, podemos encontrar la pasión oscura que puedo aportar yo.

SofN: La primera vez que vi a Iron Maiden en directo fue precisamente en esa gira, en 1995 en Barcelona. Recuerdo que vinistéis con My Dying Bride, una banda que amaba entonces y sigo amando ahora pero que fue abucheada hasta la muerte por el público. ¿Qué recuerdas de ese primera gira, y crees que el mismo tipo de cerrazón de mente que sufrieron los chicos de My Dying Bride a ojos de muchos fans se puede aplicar también a ti, siempre etiquetado como «el nuevo» sin darte la oportunidad de ser suficientemente bueno a sus ojos?

Una gira genial. Muchas ciudades españolas con fans maravillosos cantando con nosotros. Me sentí muy orgulloso de ser El Cantante de Iron Maiden, por tanto tiempo como fuera a durar. Un sueño hecho realidad para mí.

SofN: ¿Te acuerdas, por cierto, de por qué decidistéis llevar una banda tan tremendamente diferente a vosotros como My Dying Bride de teloneros en esa gira? ¿Fue para acentuar la oscuridad de The X Factor? Convendrás conmigo que fue una elección algo rara…

No tuve nada que decir sobre el telonero. Creo que era importante tener a una banda inglesa. Es una pena que el público les abucheara.

SofN: ¿Cómo es tu relación hoy en día con los miembros de la banda? ¿Nunca habéis comentado sobre participar en algun tipo de evento como invitado, considerando que están metidos en tantas giras retrospectivas, y precisamente ahora se cumplen 25 años desde tu entrada en la banda? ¿Te gustaría hacerlo?

Me encantaría cantar junto a Iron Maiden una vez más si me lo preguntaran, y sé que ha habido rumores sobre los tres cantantes formando parte de una especie de concierto especial en algun momento. La verdad es que no tengo conocimiento sobre cuan fundados son estos rumores, pero me encantaría hacerlo si fuera posible.

SofN: Tu carrera ha superado ya los 30 años y ha estado llena de cambios, dificultades, obstáculos e incluso tragedias, pero tú los has superando todos y sigues haciéndolo para estar donde estás ahora mismo. En todo este tiempo, y más aún habiendo sido el amo y señor de tu propia banda, supongo que habrás tenido que tomar un montón de decisiones importantes. Con la perspectiva del tiempo, ¿de cuáles estás más orgulloso, cuáles crees que tenías que haber tomado antes y dónde crees que básicamente la cagaste?

La cagué confiando en un par de managers vagos y estúpidos. Sencillamente fui incapaz de darme cuenta. Tenía que haber sido mucho más cuidadoso antes de dejar que cualquiera se encargara de manejar mi carrera. Mi manager actual encaja perfectamente conmigo: ponemos mi visión artística en el centro de lo que producimos y nos aseguramos de que existen formas prácticas para alcanzar esa visión. También comparte mi opinión de que los fans están en el corazón de todo lo que hago. Él intenta aportar el máximo valor posible a cada publicación que hacemos y hablamos constantemente sobre qué podemos hacer para que tanto la experiencia de un show de Blaze Bayley como el meet and greet gratuito sea lo mejor posible para los fans.

SofN: Si pudieras montar una gira con las cuatro bandas que quisieras, siendo Blaze Bayley una de ellas, ¿cuáles escogerías y por qué?

Sabaton, Disturbed, Iron Maiden y Blaze Bayley. Conozco a la gente en todas las bandas y soy fan de su musica así que sería una gira divertida.

SofN: Hi Blaze! First of all, thank you very much for spending some time answering these questions for us. You will have to forgive me for quite a long interview, but truth is that I couldn’t help myself :-). How are you going these days? How is the british winter treating you?

I haven’t seen much of the British winter as I’ve just returned from a tour of Latin America and now I am in mainland Europe. The worst thing about the winter weather is worrying about colds and flu that may affect my singing if I get infected

SofN: You are about to release the CD / DVD «Live in France», recorded last may in the Chez Paulette club, next to Nancy. Lately it seems to be a tradition from you to release a live album every five years. What can we expect from this one and why did you choose exactly that venue to record it?

Chez Paulette is a venue where I have a great history and the promoter that arranges my gigs there is a trusted friend and partner. The crowd is normally great, the venue treats the fans very well and the atmosphere is fantastic. It has become like a second home and always feels important. That’s why I wanted to record there. Try to capture some of the magic that i feel when I perform there.

SofN: Last year you published «The Redemption of William Black», the last album of your ambitious and successful trilogy «Infinite Entanglement», which has come as an album per year. How was the process of composing and recording such a mammooth project? Was it all already in your mind before starting with the whole thing? Do you think it has been the most ambitious accomplishment of your career?

Infinite Entanglement was made possible by my fans. The support of my wonderful fans was the most important part of the whole trilogy. I’m writing a book and the story in the trilogy is taken from that story. I believe the trilogy is the greatest achievement of my career.

SofN: And now what? Considering you put new music out very often, when are we to expect a new album from you and what direction will it take, both musically and conceptually?

I released a new classical acoustic album ‘December Wind’ in November and now following the release of the ‘Live in France’ album and DVD, I plan to write and record a brand new full metal album for release in 2020. Before that there will be a lot of touring in Europe and North America. The writing for the new album will begin at the end of March so I will begin to get a better idea of the creative direction then.

SofN: This first half of the year you are fully booked on a south american, european, english and american tours. Then you have the festivals in the summer and, I guess, further dates in the fall. What are your main plans, expectations and challenges for this year? What would you like to see when you turn the head back at the end of 2019?

My fans make it possible for me to live out my dream of being a heavy metal singer. I hold a free meet and greet at every headline show so if I reach the end of 2019 and look back on good shows, meeting my wonderful fans that is the important thing for me.

SofN: After having had an almost neverending array of musicians going through the band for many years, lately you seem to have established a stable and successful partnership with the guys of Absolva, a band that has made a bit of a name by themselves too (Luke is, for example, also bassist of Iced Earth). Is it easier to work with a full existing band than having to recruit every single musician yourself? As far as I know, they are not simply a backing band either, but also collaborate in the songwriting of your music. Do you see this collaboration as a long term one?

Absolva have been with me for over 5 years now and this is the most stable line-up in the history of my solo career. As a whole we have a good team now and this is easier to work with. I worked closely with Chris Appleton on the writing of the trilogy and that will continue with the next record.

SofN: You make every effort to be close to your fans, spending as much time as needed with them before and after the shows. Do you think this essence, this being real and approachable people is being slightly lost in recent times because of the ever increasing mercantilization of the musical industry, specially in the case of younger bands?

As an independent artist my fans are most important and enable me to do what I do. They make it possible for me to tour the world and make records so for me there is no higher priority. I believe this is the best way to run things as an independent artist. I really don’t care what other artists do or what is happening in the music Industry. Every headline show I meet my fans for free.

SofN: Some of your last album covers, t-shirt and poster designs have been designed, precisely, by the spanish artist Alberto Quinteros (the man behind the brand Akirant Illustration), which has also worked recently with Iron Maiden. How come did you start working with him and what do you specially like about his art?

He is such a wonderful artist and a real music fan. I sent him lyrics and titles and demos and we talked about the story. The comic style for the tee shirts for this tour and the live album cover. It is an honour and privilege to work with such a talented man.

SofN: This summer you will be in the Rock the Coast festival, a new metal festival that will be happening for the first time in the south of Spain. Along with other festivals in Europe, you are announced to play a full Iron Maiden set to mark the 25th anniversary since you joined the band. Why did you decide to do this precisely now (and not in other «big» anniversary dates)? Have you been playing with the idea already in the past?

I thought about doing this during the past 3 or 4 years but held back until I felt the time was right. Now with the 25th anniversary of my joining Iron Maiden and with a back catalogue of my own 11 studio albums, I feel the time is right. My time in Maiden was a magical period of my career and these special shows are a great way to celebrate that period. Joining maiden was such a positive thing for me. I learned so much. You can clearly hear the influence of my time in maiden on my infinite entanglement trilogy.

SofN: You announced it also as a one and only opportunity to see such a set, but… if it was to be as successful as it will probably be, would you be considering doing a full tour with that format? How do you think the response of the fans will be, both in terms of excitement and in ticket sales? What sort of feedback have you received so far?

So far the fans have been excited and positive. There is a small number of similar shows to come towards the end of 2019 but no plan to extend beyond that. The most important thing is it will be a lot of fun to sing those old songs again.

SofN: I can imagine that for any musician and metalhead, to be able to be part of a band like Iron Maiden is a totally priceless experience. Still, do you think that in some way this has been something negative for your afterwards career, as most people do simply label you as that «ex-Iron Maiden» singer? Are you tired of having to carry that «surname» everywhere all the time? If you had to do some fantasy-fiction, and considering Wolfsbane were one of the hottest bands in UK when you left in 1994, where do you think you would be now as a musician if you never joined Iron Maiden?

The opportunity to work closely with Steve Harris was wonderful, as was the chance to front the most important heavy metal band in the world. I learned so much during that time and developed my voice too. The majority of my experience during that time was positive and the impact on my future career also positive. It’s impossible to say what would have happened in my career otherwise.

SofN: Do you think Bruce Dickinson’s shoes simple too big to fill? I mean, not that you didn’t have the skills or the talent to do it, but he was (and still is) one of the most iconic frontmen in the history of heavy metal. What challenges did you have to face? Was it more difficult than you expected? Is anything you regret or wished could have been different?

Bruce has always been kind and generous to me, and he is a marvellous singer. He wished me well when I joined Iron Maiden, has interviewed me when he was presenting his own radio show later on and even allowed to me to use his flight simulator in one of my recent music videos. He and I share the knowledge of what a tough job in can be to front Iron Maiden but it was no more and no less than I expected.

SofN: Talking about those two albums you recorded with Maiden, in my opinion «Virtual XI» is a bit irregular, but «The X Factor» is a great record that to me still doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves. How do you see those albums and the circumstances around them with the perspective of time? How do you think they compare with the rest of the discography of Iron Maiden?

I’m very proud of both my albums with iron maiden. Those two albums seem to mark the beginning of the progressive era of iron maiden. They have a dark feeling. I think the two albums are a different way of looking at the iron maiden universe. There is all the power and melody and great musicianship fans have come to expect from iron maiden but instead of the soaring majesty of the Dickinson vocals, there is the dark passion of my vocal.

SofN: First time I saw Iron Maiden in my life was precisely in that tour, in 1995 in Barcelona. I remember you came with My Dying Bride, a band I loved and still love but were booed to death by the crowd. What do you remember about that first tour, and do you feel a similar closemindedness that My Dying Bride suffered applied also to you, as you were always labeled as «the new singer» and never fully given the chance to be good enough in their eyes?

A wonderful tour. So many Spanish cities with wonderful fans singing along. I was proud to be El Cantante de iron maiden, for how ever long it would last. A dream come true for me.

SofN: Do you remember, by the way, why on earth you decided to have a band as different from you as My Dying Bride as a support act? Was it to highlight the darkness of The X Factor? It was a weird choice, you have to admit it…

I didn’t have any say about the support band. I think it was important to have a British band. Its a shame people booed them.

SofN: How is your relationship today with the members of the band? Have you ever been approached to do any guest appearence with them, considering that they are inmersed in so many retrospective tours, and precisely now will be 25 years since you were in the band? Would you like to do it?

I would love to sing with Iron Maiden again if asked and there have been rumours of all 3 singers performing a special concert sometime. I have no knowledge of any foundation to those rumours but would love to do it, if it was possible.

SofN: Your career spans for more than 30 years and has been full of changes, difficulties, obstacles and even tragedies, but you have raced through all of them and you continue doing so to be where you are today. In all that time, and more so having been at the reins of your own band for most of this time, I am sure you had to take plenty of important decisions. With the perspective of time, which ones are you most proud of, which ones you think you should have taken earlier, and when do you think that you basically screwed up?

Screwed up trusting a couple of lazy and stupid managers. I just didn’t spot that. I should have been much more careful before letting anyone become in managing my career. My manager now is a perfect fit for me. Putting my artistic vision at the centre of what we produce but making sure we have practical ways to achieve that vision. He also shares my view that my fans are at the heart of what I do. He tries to provide the best value possible for every release and we talk constantly about what we can do to make the experience of each Blaze Bayley show and free meet and greet the best it can be for my fans.

SofN: If you could put up a tour today with any four bands you wanted, being yourselves one of them, which ones would you choose and why?

Sabaton . Disturbed . Iron maiden. Blaze Bayley. I know the people in each band and I like the music of each band so it would be a fun tour.
