Entrevista a Bokassa: ‘»Fixxxer» es mi canción favorita de Metallica. Espero que la toquen en esta gira’

SofN: Hola chicos! Antes que nada, muchas gracias por dedicar algo de vyetro tiempo en contestar estas preguntas en lo que me imagino que es un momento bastate ocupado. ¿Cómo estáis?

¡Estamos genial y totalmente preparados! Hemos estado trabajando duro y ahora solo esperamos el momento de salir de gira.

SofN: Hace unos meses no había mucha gente que os conocía, y de golpe estáis en todas partes y formando parte de la mayor gira de rock / metal del año, al menos en Europa. ¿Cómo llegásteis hasta aquí y cómo os sentís ante ello?

Bueno, es bastante surrealista y es fantástico que nos ocurra a nosotros. Estamos tremendamente excitados con ello.

SofN: Hace como un año y medio Lars Ulrich fue a la radio y dijo que Bokassa se había convertido en su banda joven favorita, creando un pequeño revuelo en la escena metálica global. ¿Hasta qué punto una afirmación así fue un punto de inflexión en vuestra aún joven carrera y qué sentistéis cuando os enterasteis? ¿Sabéis cómo os descubrió?

Fue jodidamente genial cuando ocurrió y bastate irreal. Recibimos una notificación en nuestro Twitter antes del programa anunciando que Lars iba a poner una canción nuestra. Pensamos que era algun tipo de error, pero nos sentamos a escucharlo y empezó con «Last Night (Was a Real Massacre)» de nuestro disco de debut. Eso fue increíble, y luego siguió elogiándonos. Fue genial.

SofN: Os debo confesar que tampoco yo os conocía antes de veros anunciados para esta gira. ¿Habéis notado un gran incremento de atención hacia vosotros y hacia vuestra música, tanto en venta como en reproducciones de streaming como en seguimiento en redes sociales desde que se anunció?

Hemos notado un incremento seguro, sí.

SofN: Por supuesto, siempre existe el pequeño peligro cuando uno abre para bandas tan grandes que muchos fans no os presten realmente atención y seais sencillamente un engorro necesario antes de que sus ídolos salten al escenario. ¿Qué les contarías para convencerlos que vengan temprano y qué tenéis pensado para atraparlos a vuestro concierto?

Estamos pensando soltar cincuenta palomas blancas antes y después de nuestro concierto cada noche. Cada paloma llevará luces LED y, al volar con un cierto patrón, ¡formarán nuestro nombre ante la audiencia! Bueno, o eso o tocaremos tan bien como podamos y esperaremos ganar algunos fans.

SofN: Asumo que tendréis un tiempo en el escenario bastante corto, y esta es una oportunidad de mostrar vuestra música y hacer fans de por vida que no se presenta todos los días. ¿Habéis preparado estos conciertos de alguna forma especial y con esto en mente o sencillamente tocaréis como siempre habéis tocado?

Primero pensamos disfrazarnos de Blue Man Group, pero nuestro batería es alérgico al color azul, así que en vez de eso acabamos ensayando las canciones.

SofN: Durante vuestra visita a España no solo tocareis en Madrid y Barcelona junto a Metallica, sino que también daréis un pequeño show en sala en Sevilla. ¿Qué podemos esperar de un concierto vuestro en este tipo de ubicación?

Me encantan tanto los conciertos en salas pequeñas como los grandes festivales. Hay grandes cosas a decir de ambos.

SofN: Vuestro segundo disco, llamado Crimson Riders, aldrá a finales de la gira. ¿Qué podemos esperar de él y cuáles son las principales diferencias entre este álbum y vuestros trabajos anteriores?

Creemos que es un disco fantástico y continúa en el lugar en el que lo dejamos con Divide & Conquer. Es un disco muy diverso lleno de canciones clásicas de stoner punk, cortes hardcore para corear, metal punk rápido y riffs doomy. Pero son nuestros hooks melódicos los que brillan especialmente esta vez.

SofN: ¿Qué canciones de este nuevo disco creéis que tienen mayor potencial de convertirse en clásicos futuros de Bokassa?

¡Todas ellas!

SofN: Vosotros mismos llamais stoner punk a la música que hacéis, y creo que esta etiqueta define vuestra música bastante bien. ¿Cuáles son las influencias y el bagaje musical que os ha hecho llegar hasta aquí?

Bueno, queríamos mezclar punk rock y hardcore con stoner rock y groove metal, y sentí que el nombre «stonerpunk» explica muy bien lo que somos. Nos encantan bandas como NOFX, Propagandhi y Bad Religion, pero también cosas como Fu Manchu, Queens of the Stone Age y Clutch. Así que supongo que es una progresión natural desde ahí.

SofN: No sé si estarás de acuerdo, pero también veo una cierta similitud a Kvelertak en vuestra música. Ellos no son solo una banda que amo, sino que sn noruegos como vosotros y, además, también abrieron para Metallica en su última gira el año pasado. ¿Crees que son una influencia para vosotros de una forma u otra y que han abierto un nuevo espacio musical en vuestro país, embruteciendo y rasgando el sonido clásico de Turbonegro? ¿Les conocéis personalmente y, si es así, habéis hablado de su experiencia como teloneros de Metallica?

Sí, conozco a su guitarrista Maciek, que es un tío genial y nos ha ayudado mucho con preguntas que se teníamos no solo sobre la gira, sino también sobre la industria musical.

SofN: ¿Debo asumir que os llamáis Bokassa por Jean-Bédel Bokasa, el sanguinario presidente de la República Centroafricana durante los setenta? Si es así, ¿por qué? Y si no, ¿en qué os inspirásteis para tomar este nombre?

Bokassa significa «estantería de libros» en noruego, y todos somos firmes creyentes en el arte de la carpintería. (ndr. me parto)

SofN: ¿Sois personalmente fans de Metallica? ¿Cuál es vuestra historia con ellos? ¿Cómo y cuándo les descubristéis, cuáles son vuestros discos y canciones favoritas y cómo crees que han influenciado vuestra música, si es que lo han hecho?

Todos amamos a Metallica. Les he visto en directo en dos ocasiones, así que esto es genial. Mi disco favorito es Reload, y voy a defender ese disco donde sea que tenga que hacerlo. Hay algunas canciones fantásticas ahí. «Fixxxer» es mi canción favorita de Metallica. Espero que la toquen en directo cuando estemos de gira con ellos.

SofN: ¿Y qué tal Ghost? ¿Qué piensas sobre el fenómeno a su alrededor? (almenos tienen la catedral de vuestra ciudad en la portada de su primer disco)

¡También me encanta Ghost! Estoy ansioso por ver a las dos bandas cada noche. ¡Va a ser jodidamente épico!

SofN: Sé que esta gira va a ser genial y os va a llevar un paso adelante, pero si pudieras montar tú un tour con las cuatro bandas que quieras, siendo Bokassa una de ellas. ¿Cuáles escogerías y por qué? (es divertido, porque una elevada proporción de las bandas a las que les hago esta pregunta dicen «Metallica» como una de ellas.

Voy a escoger bandas que han sacado disco este año porque esto es lo que estoy escuchando ahora mismo mientras contesto a esta entrevista. Y con eso en mente me gustaría que el cartel de esta gira lo formaran PUP, Cokie the Clown, The Damned Things y Angel Du$t!

SofN: Bueno, pues esto es todo. Muchas gracias por tu tiempo y nos vemos pronto en Barcelona. Me sabe un poco mal haber enfocado esta entrevista tanto en los conciertos junto a Metallica, pero bueno, me imagino que éste es el mayor interés ahora mismo. SofN: Hi guys. First of all, I would like to thank you for dedicating some time to answer these questions for us in what I guess are quite busy times for you all. How are you these days?

Great and ready! We have been working hard to get everything ready and are now just waiting to go on tour!

SofN: Not many knew about you some months ago and suddenly you are everywhere, being part of the biggest rock / metal tour of the year, at least in Europe. How did you get to be there and how do you felt and feel about it?

Well, it is a pretty surrealistic and fantastic thing to happen to us. We are immensly excited for this happening.

SofN: About a year and a half ago Lars Ulrich went to the radio and said that Bokassa had become his new favourite band, creating a small stir in the whole metal scene. How much an statement like that was an inflexion point in your still young career and how did you feel when you found out? Do you know how did he get to discover you in the first place?

It was pretty fucking cool when it happened and totally unreal. We got a notification on our Twitter before the show where Lars Ulrich tweeted he was gonna play us. We thought that it was some kind of mistake but we sat ready when the show started and then he opened with “Last Night (Was A Real Massacre)” from our debut album, and that was unbelievable and then he just kept praising us which was so cool!

SofN: I must confess that even myself didn’t hear of you either before I saw you anounced for this tour. Have you noticed a massive increase of attention for you and your music, both in sales, streaming plays and social network following since you’ve been in the bill?

We´ve noticed an increase for sure, yes.

SofN: Of course, there’s the slight danger when you open for such mammoth bands that many fans won’t be really paying that much attention to you and for them you are just a necessary nuisance before their idols come on stage. What would you tell them to convince them to come to the venue early, and what do you have in store to hook them to your show?

We plan on releasing 50 doves before and after our set each night. Every dove will be attached with LED-lights and when they fly in a certain pattern it will in fact spell out our name for the audience! Either that or we are just going to play as good as we can and hopefully win over some fans!

SofN: I assume that you will have a relatively short time on stage, and this is one opportunity to get expose your music and make life long fans that you won’t have every day. Have you prepared these shows in a special way or you will just be playing like you’ve always played?

First we thought of dressing up as the Blue Man Group but our drummer is in fact allergic to the color blue, so we just ended up rehearsing a whole lot instead.

SofN: During your visit to Spain you won’t only play in Madrid and Barcelona, but you will also have a small club show in Sevilla. What can we expect from your show in that kind of venue? Do you feel more at home in those small, sweaty and energetic clubs or you are equally comfortable with stadiums too?

I love both club shows and big festival shows, there a great things to say of both.

SofN: Your second album, called «Crimson Riders», will come up at the end of the tour. What can we expect from it and what are the main differences between it and your previous work? 

We feel it´s a fantastic record and it continues from where “Divide & Conquer” left of. It is a diverse record with everything from classic stoner punk tracks, hardcore sing-a-longs, fast metal punk and doomy riffs. But our melodic hooks really shine through this time!

SofN: What songs of this new album you think have the highest potential to become future classics of Bokassa?

All of them!

SofN: You call yourselves a stoner punk band and overall I think this label defines your music quite well. What are the influences and the musical background that took you here? 

Well we wanted to mix punk rock and hardcore with stoner rock riffs and groove metal, and I felt that the name stonerpunk explains what we are about. We love bands like NOFX, Propagandhi and Bad Religion and also stuff like Fu Manchu, QOTSA and Clutch. So I guess it´s a natural progression from that.

SofN: I don’t know if you would agree, but I can also see a certain similitude with Kvelertak in your music. They are not only a band that I love, but they are also norwegians like you and on top of it had the opening spot for Metallica in their last european tour last year. Do you feel that they are an influence for you somehow and that they opened a new space / subgenre in your country, somehow «dirtying» and «harshing» Turbonegros’ sound? Do you know them personally and, if so, have you spoken about their experience supporting Metallica?

Yeah, I know the guitarist Maciek who is a great guy, and he has helped us a lot with questions we´ve had both about the tour and also the music industry.

SofN: Shall I assume that you named yourself Bokassa after Jean-Bédel Bokassa, the sanguinarian president of the Central African Republic during the seventies? If so, why? And if not, where did you draw inspiration for your name then?

Bokassa actually means book shelf in Norwegian, and we are all firm believers in the arts of woodcraft.

SofN: Are you personally fans of Metallica? What’s your story with them? How and when you discovered them, what are your favourite albums and songs and how do you feel they influenced your music, if at all? 

We all love Metallica. I´ve seen them live two times before so this is awesome. My favourite album is actually Reload, I will defend that album whenever I have to. Some fantastic tracks on there. Fixxxer is my favourite Metallica song. Hope they play that live when we are on tour with them.

SofN: And what about Ghost? What do you think about its phenomenon? (they have your hometown cathedral in the cover of their first album, at least!)

Love Ghost as well! Can´t wait to see both bands live every night, it will be fucking epic!

SofN: I know this tour is pretty awesome and will take you a step ahead but if you could put together a tour with any four bands you wanted, which ones would you choose and why? (it’s funny because a good percentage of the bands I ask this question say «Metallica» as one of them :-D)

Here I am gonna go for bands that released records this year because that is what I am listening to right now while answering this interview. And with that in mind I would like this tour line-up to be PUP, Cokie The Clown, The Damned Things and Angel Du$t!
