Entrevista a Boris, guitarrista de Monkey3: ‘Suiza puede ser un país complicado cuando se trata de arte o de música’

SofN: Buenos días Boris, primero de todo quiero agradecerte la oportunidad de realizar esta entrevista. ¡Gracias chicos!

¡No hay de que!

SofN: Quizás, alguno de nuestros lectores no sepa mucho sobre Monkey3, ¿podrías poner en contexto a la banda y su propuesta musical ?

¡Claro! Somos una banda instrumental de Lausanne, Suiza. Interpretamos una música que bebe del stoner, el rock psicodélico, el progresivo y el space-rock.

SofN: La banda se formó en 2001 en Lausanne, tras cinco grandes álbumes y más de 18 años de carrera, sois los mismos que iniciasteis la banda. ¿Puedes explicar como es la coexistencia entre vosotros?

Bueno, normalmente es sencillo aunque a veces puede ser un poco duro… la clave es que siempre nos escuchamos los unos a los otros sin faltarnos nunca el respeto. Es muy importante el seguir divirtiéndonos y tener nuevos objetivos para alcanzar. Basicamente es como una relación de pareja de larga duración.

SofN: Sois cuatro músicos y puedo imaginar que a veces puede ser complicado llegar a un acuerdo. ¿Como funciona el proceso creativo en Monkey3?

Todos estamos involucrados en el proceso de creación, normalmente nos ponemos a tocar en formato jam, todos juntos, y a partir de eso nos ponemos a trabajar en una nueva canción. A veces no nos ponemos de acuerdo con la dirección que debemos tomar mientras escribimos pero normalmente estamos de acuerdo, siempre y cuando todos estemos involucrados en el proceso y nos divirtamos haciéndolo, todo saldrá bien.

SofN: Estamos esperando vuestro nuevo LP que se titulará Sphere, el cual se publicará el 12 de abril, vuestros últimos trabajos están muy bien acabados, se ven trabajos más inteligentes. ¿Estamos hablando de madurez compositiva o simplemente es un paso más en la evolución de la banda?

Gracias por el cumplido! Yo creo que es una evolución natural, probablemente debido al hecho que, al pasar el tiempo, cada vez tenemos más experiencia. Siempre intentamos estar el máximo de preparados posible para crear algo de lo que podamos sentirnos orgullosos, a veces funciona y a veces no.

SofN: ¿Qué podemos esperar de Sphere? ¿Puedes contarnos algo sobre él? ¡Necesitamos algún “spoiler”!

En este nuevo trabajo volvemos a la formula de “todo instrumental”. Estábamos mirando de regresar un poco a nuestras raíces y recuperar la parte más heavy y psicodélica d ella banda. “Sphere” será 100% old school Monkey3: psicodélico, spacerock, heavy y trippy !

SofN: A finales de abril vendreis a Barcelona para tocar en el Riff Ritual Festival Vol. 5, un increíble festival con enormes bandas. ¿Qué clase de show podemos esperar de Monkey3?

Con el nuevo álbum publicado y su siguiente tour, tendremos un nuevo show para ofreceros, estad preparados para un intenso psicodélico y space-rock show con un juego de luces muy flipante y proyecciones de video.

SofN: Este será vuestro quinto concierto en Barcelona, aquí tenemos una gran base de seguidores de vuestro estilo. Un par de preguntas sobre ello. ¿Cuál es la relación entre la banda y la ciudad? Y, ¿cuál es vuestra opinión sobre el público de Barcelona y el de España en general?

El público español es salvaje y caluroso, siempre es un gran placer tocar frente a audiencias involucradas. Como banda te sientes animado por ello y es una gran sensación.

SofN: ¿Qué bandas han influenciado en el sonido de Monkey3?

No es ningún misterio la influencia de Pink Floyd y otras pocas bandas de rock clásico pero quizás las bandas que más han influenciado en nuestra música son las bandas grandes de los 90 como Kyuss, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains y Jane’s Addiction.

SofN: Suiza es un país pequeño pero siempre ha generado bandas enormes tanto de rock como de metal, ¿podrías decirnos cual es el secreto ? ¿Hay algún tipo de ayuda o subvención por parte del estado o algunas organizaciones culturales?

Nunca hemos recibido ayudas ni del estado ni ninguna organización culutral. Suiza puede ser un país complicado cuando se trata de arte o música….

SofN: En nuestra revista disfrutamos mucho realizando tops podrías citar cinco álbumes que han dejado huella en el sonido de Monkey3?

Es una pregunta complicada, pues la respuesta puede cambiar depende del día, pero voy a provar:

Wish you were here de Pink Floyd, In Rock de Deep Purple, Blues for the red sun de Kyuss, Liquid de 35007 y por último II de Led Zeppelin.

SofN: Maybe some of our readers doesn’t know about Monkey3, could you put in context the band and his musical proposal?

Sure! We are an instrumental band from Lausanne, Switzerland. We play a music that is a blend between stoner, psychedelic, prog and space-rock.

SofN: The band was formed in Lausanne at 2001 , after five amazing albums and more than 18 years, you’re the same people that started this band. Can you explain how is the coexitence between you?

Well, usually it’s pretty easy going but sometimes it can be a bit tougher… the key is to always listen to each other and never loose respect. It’s also very important to keep having fun and to have new goals to achieve. Basically it’s like a longtime husband/wife relationship.

SofN: You are four musicians and I imagine that sometimes can be complicated to get in agreement. How does the creative process work in Monkey3 ?

We are all involved in the writing process. Usually we start by jamming together and then work on that to built a proper track. Sometimes we disagree on the direction we should go while writing, often we agree, as long as everyone is involved in the process and have fun doing it, it’s all good.

SofN: We are waiting for the new LP called Sphere that will arrives at April 12th, your lasts albums were intelligent works, very well-prepared, ¿May we talk about compositional maturity or is it a matter of natural evolution?

Thanks for the compliment! I guess it’s a natural evolution, probably due to the fact that, time passing by, we get more and more experienced. We always try to be as prepared as possible in order to release something that we can be proud of, sometimes it works, sometimes not.

SofN: What can we expect with Sphere? what can you explain something about it? We need some spoilers!

On this new record, we went back to the fully instrumental formula. We were looking to return a bit to our roots and we brought back the more psychedelic and heavy side of the band. “Sphere” is 100% old school Monkey3: psychedelic, spacey, heavy and trippy!

SofN: In later april, you will come to Barcelona to play in Riff Ritual Festival Vol. 5, an amazing festival with huge bands. What kind of show of your band we will live there?

With the new album out and the following tour, we have a brand new show to offer, so be prepared for an intensively psychedelic and spacey show with highly trippy light show and video projections.

SofN: It will be your fifth show here, in Barcelona. Here there is a strong stoner fan base. A couple of questions about it.What is the relation between the band and the city ? What is your opinion about the Barcelona and Spanish audience?

The Spanish public is pretty hot and wild, it’s always a great pleasure to play there as the audience is quite involved. As a band you feel rouse by that and it’s a great feeling.

SofN: Which bands infuenced on Monkey3 sound?

It’s not a mystery that we are pretty influenced by Pink Floyd and quite a few classic-rock acts but it’s worth mentionning that early 90’s acts such as Kyuss, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Jane’s Addiction had a huge impact on us.

SofN: Switzerland is a small country but there have got an amazing rock and metal scene, can you tell us the secret about it ? Does the council, the state or some cultural organization, help about it?

We never had any help from the state or cultural organizations. Switzerland can be a tough country when it comes to art or music…

SofN: Our magazine team really enjoy the “Tops”, can you quote the top five albums that left a mark on Monkey3 since his youth until now?

It’s a tough question and the answer might change everyday, but let’s give it a try: Wish you were here by Pink Floyd, In Rock by Deep Purple, Blues for the red sun by Kyuss, Liquid by 35007, II by Led Zeppelin.
