Entrevista a Brutus: ‘Aprender a tratar con las personas y sus sentimientos es el desafío más importante que tenemos como banda’

¡Hola! Primero, quiero agradeceros que nos concedáis esta entrevista. Y ya que estamos, felicitar a Brutus por su corta, intensa y admirable carrera. Todo un placer hablar con vosotros. ¿Qué tal estáis?

Stefanie: Creo que estamos bastante bien. Todo es un poco abrumador en este momento, pero todavía seguimos vivos y estamos muy contentos de ver todas las cosas que nos están sucediendo en este momento.

Acabáis de publicar Nest, un álbum enorme. ¡Felicidades! Así, de buenas a primeras, decidme: ¿cuál es vuestro tema preferido y por qué? (Yo escojo “War“)

Stijn: ¡Muchas gracias! Creo que “War” es también mi canción favorita y es muy especial para los tres. Hablamos mucho sobre la canción y probamos muchas cosas para que funcionara, y funcionó bien desde el principio. Realmente marca un punto de inflexión para nosotros. Cada canción que escribamos ahora, tiene que ser tan buena como “War”. (risas) ¡No podemos volver atrás! También me gusta mucho “Space” porque me hace sentir que hay tantos sonidos que aún no hemos explorado. Me emociona mucho pensar en un próximo álbum.

Burst (2017) fue un gran debut, pero Nest es un trabajo mucho más maduro. Se nota que lo habéis trabajado con más experiencia y, quizá, más ayuda. ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de gestación de Nest? ¿Qué intenciones personales tenéis con este trabajo?

Peter: No nos ponemos límites cuando estamos escribiendo canciones. Si la música captura el sentimiento que queremos expresar, es todo lo que necesitamos. Puede sonar raro, pero hablamos más sobre los sentimientos y lo que significaba todo en este álbum que antes con nuestro álbum debut Burst. Si las letras de Stefanie pedían ciertas sensaciones, tratábamos de hablar mucho sobre eso y luego apoyarla o chocar con ese feeling, juntos. Nos conocemos mucho mejor ahora y somos capaces de sentir más emociones, pensamientos,… Siempre habíamos escrito canciones juntos, pero con Nest era como si estuviéramos haciendo esto aún más.

Siempre cerráis vuestros trabajos con el tema más largo del disco -“Child” y “Sugar Dragon” son dos temas increíbles- pero… ¿entiendo que preferís los temas cortos y directos?

Stefanie: ¡No! Me gustan las canciones largas. Con ellas, una se puede tomar el tiempo necesario para contar su historia y pasar por las mismas fases que atravesaron las personas en la historia. Las canciones cortas también son buenas, pero me gusta mucho tocar las largas.

No voy a decir que estáis inventando un estilo, pero sí puedo afirmar que estáis aportando una nueva idea en el mundo del post rock / post hardcore / post metal. Una suma de elementos muy bien construidos que da una nueva vida a estos estilos. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de mezclar tantas cosas?

Peter: Simplemente, sucedió. Cuando empezamos esta banda, nunca hablamos de géneros. Solo queríamos estar juntos en una banda porque nos gustábamos. Pronto descubrimos que todos teníamos orígenes muy diferentes. Stijn quería hacer un grupo del estilo de Band of Horses, yo prefería el punk rock, y Stefanie quería metal. Y de eso salió Brutus. (risas)

¿Qué referencias o bandas de referencia teníais o tenéis como banda?

Stijn: Todos tenemos influencias realmente diferentes, por lo que es casi imposible nombrar bandas de referencia en las que los tres estuviéramos de acuerdo. Creo que sonamos como lo hacemos porque tenemos gustos diferentes. Por supuesto, hay bandas que a los tres nos gustan, como Russian Circles, pero no creo que eso realmente se muestre en las canciones que escribimos.

Vuestra carrera ha despegado a una velocidad de vértigo. En poco tiempo habéis pasado de ser una banda debutante a tocar en la mayoría de festivales internacionales. Este verano vais a venir a España, concretamente al Download Fest de Madrid. ¿Cómo afrontáis este ascenso meteórico?

Peter: Bueno, sí, nuestro álbum Nest cubre algunos de esos desafíos. Estamos poniendo todo lo que tenemos en la banda, no hay nada más que dar a otras personas o a otras cosas de nuestras vidas, como las relaciones o el trabajo o… Además de las cosas prácticas, como el dinero y el trabajo, también tenemos que tratar con las personas y sus sentimientos, sus palabras, sus pensamientos… Y eso es realmente difícil a veces. Creo que ese es el desafío más difícil hasta ahora. Y el más importante.

Habéis salido de gira con bandas como Thrice, Russian Circles o Chelsea Wolfe. ¡Nos encantan las tres bandas! ¿Qué tal la experiencia de girar con bandas tan importantes?

Stefanie: Super agradable. También aprendimos mucho. Cómo recorrer, cómo comportarse en la carretera. Y abrir para bandas tan killer todas las noches es un sueño. Fue una gran experiencia. Todos fueron muy amables con nosotros. Tres bandas completamente diferentes, pero todas trabajaron muy duro por lo que son hoy. Lo repetiría, sin duda.

¿A qué banda os gustaría acompañar a corto plazo?

Stijn: Me encantaría hacer una gira con Mewithoutyou o Converge. El tour con Cult of Luna que hemos planeado para finales de este año también es un sueño hecho realidad.

Tanto Stijn como Peter dan una solidez impecable a vuestro sonido, pero Stefanie me tiene alucinado. Sabiendo lo complicado que es tocar la batería y cantar a la vez, ella lo hace como fácil. ¿Cómo has logrado cantar tan bien en tantos registros y, a la vez, tocar la batería de esa forma? ¿Talento innato, clases o muchas horas de práctica?

Stefanie: Muchos, muchos ensayos (risas). Solo practica y ser paciente. Las cosas que hay en tu cabeza no saldrán como quieres al principio, pero es lo mismo con cada nueva habilidad que intentas aprender. La parte más difícil es controlar tu respiración mientras tocas la batería, porque a veces estás demasiado excitada o estás demasiado concentrada en la batería.

Pese a ser cada vez más famosos, debemos recordar que solo lleváis cuatro o cinco años en activo como banda. ¿Que sueños realistas tenéis?

Peter: Para ser honesto, ¡no tenemos ni idea! Para empezar: no somos realmente soñadores. Todo lo que nos ha pasado hasta ahora ha sido una sorpresa. Desde los primeros shows hasta firmar un contrato o los tours acompañando a bandas increíbles. No tenemos ni idea de lo que nos traerá esta banda. Pero es verdad, si soñamos, es mejor que seamos realistas. Así que intentemos hacer que nuestro viaje a los Estados Unidos en noviembre valga la pena y luego veremos qué pasa en 2020.

Bélgica es un país pequeño pero con gran escena musical. ¿Cuál es vuestro secreto?

Stijn: No creo que haya un secreto, solo trabajar muy duro. Como Bélgica es tan pequeña, tengo la sensación de que nadie se está copiando. Todo el mundo está realmente buscando su propio sonido.

Aunque vais a venir al Download Festival de Madrid, no vais a pasar por Barcelona, nuestra ciudad. ¿Cuándo vamos a poder veros en sala?

Peter: ¡Ah! ¡Vendremos a Barcelona! Recién anunciado la semana pasada: ¡el 11 de octubre estaremos en el AM Fest! ¡Te veo allí! (risas)

Hello, guys! I would like to thank you for taking some time to answer this interview and also to congratulate you for your short, intense and admirable career. Such a pleasure talking to you. How are you doing?

Stefanie: I think we are doing very good. Everything is a bit overwhelming at the moment but we are still alive and very happy to see all the things that are happening right now.

You just published Nest, a huge album. Congratulations! So, first of all, tell me what is your favorite track and why? (I choose «War»)

Stijn: Thank you so much! I think «War» is my favorite song, it’s just so special to the three of us. We talked about the song a lot and we tried a lot of stuff to make it work but it felt good from the start. It really marks a turning point for us. Every song that we write now, has to be as good as war. 🙂 We can’t go back now. I also like «Space» a lot because it makes me feel there are so much sounds we haven’t explored. It makes me really excited to write the next album.

Burst was a great debut, but Nest is a much more mature work. It shows that you have worked with more experience and, perhaps, more help. How has the Nest gestation process been? What personal intentions and goals do you have with this work?

Peter: We have no boundaries when we are writing songs. If the music captures the feeling we want to express, it’s all we need. It may sound weird: but we did talk more about feelings and what it all meant in this album than we did before with our debut album Burst. If Stefanie’s lyrics asked for a certain vibe, we tried to talk about it a lot and then support it or clash with that vibe, together. We know each other a lot better now and are able to feel each others emotions, thoughts, … We had always written songs together, but with Nest it felt like we were doing this even more.

Brutus always finish the album with the longest track of the album, «Child» and «Sugar Dragon» are two incredible songs but… I understand that you prefer the short and direct songs?

Stefanie: No I like long songs. You can take the time to tell your story and go through the same fases that the people in the story were going through. Short songs are also good but I really like playing the long ones too.

I will not say that you are inventing a style but I can say that you are contributing a new idea in the world of post rock / post hardcore / post metal. A sum of very well constructed elements that gives a new life to these styles. How did the idea of ​​mixing so many things come about?

Peter: It just happened. When we started this band, we never talked about genres. We just wanted to be in a band together because we liked each other. Soon we found out that we all had very different backgrounds. Stijn wanted to make a Band of Horses kind of band, I preferred punk rock and Stefanie wanted metal. And that resulted into Brutus 🙂

What references or reference bands did you have or do you have as a band?

Stijn: We all have really different influences so it’s almost impossible to name reference bands that the three of us would agree on. I think we sound the way we sound because we have different tastes. Off course there are bands the three of us like like Russian Circles but I don’t think that really comes through in the songs we write.

Your career has taken off at a vertigo speed, in a short time you have gone from being a rookie band to playing in most international festivals, this summer you are coming to Spain, specifically in Madrid’s Download Fest… how are you coping with this meteoric rise? Any challenges that you have had to overcome?

Peter: Well yeah, our album Nest covers some of those challenges. If you are putting everything you have in the band, there is nothing more to give to other people or other things in your life like relationships or work or… Besides the practical stuff like money and work, you also have to deal with people and their feelings, their words, their thoughts… And that is really hard sometimes. I think that’s the hardest challenge up till now. And the most important one.

You have toured with bands like Thrice, Russian Circles or Chelsea Wolfe. We love the three bands! How was the experience?

Stefanie: Super nice. We learned so much as well. How to tour, how to behave on the road. And to open for killer bands every night is just a dream. We had a great experience. They were all so nice to us. Three completely different bands but they all worked so hard for what they are today. I would do it all over again.

What bands would you like to tour with in the short term?

Stijn: I would love to tour with Mewithoutyou or Converge. The tour with Cult of luna we have planned at the end of this year is also a dream coming true.

Stijn and Peter give an impeccable solidity to your sound, but Stefanie has me amazed, knowing that it is very complicated to play drums and sing, she does it so easily! So this is a question for Stefanie: How have you managed to sing so well in so many records and at the same time play the drums in this way? Innate talent, classes or many hours of practice?

Stefanie: Many, many rehearsals… Hahaha. Just practise and be patient. The things in your head will not come out the way you want at first but that is the same with every new skill you try to learn. The hardest part is to control your breathing while playing the drum because sometimes you are too exciting or too focused on the drumpart.

Despite being increasingly famous, we must remember that you have only been active as a band for four or five years. What realistic dreams do you have?

Peter: To be honest – we have no idea! To start: we are not really dreamers. Everything that is happened to us up to now came as some kind of surprise. From the first shows up to the signing and the awesome support tours. We have no idea what this band will bring us. But it’s true, if we dream – we better keep it realistic. So let’s try to make our trip to the US in November worthwhile, and then see what’s next in 2020.

Belgium is a small country but with a great musical scene, what is your secret?

Stijn: I don’t think there’ a secret, just a lot off hard work. Because Belgium is so small I have the feeling nobody is copying each other. Everybody is really looking for their own sound.

Although you are going to come to the Download Festival of Madrid, you are not going to go through Barcelona, ​​our city. When can we see you here?

Peter: Ah! We do come to Barcelona! Just announced last week: on October 11th we will be playing AM Fest! See you there! 🙂
