The Mission es una banda a la que no le afecta el paso del tiempo. Su puesta en escena y su trabajo no muestran signos de agotamiento. Sin contar con mucho tiempo, nos ponemos al teléfono con Craig Adams, bajista fundador de la banda gótica así como miembro fundador de The Sisters of Mercy y colaborador en The Cult (si, ha pasado por las tres grandes bandas británicas de rock gótico).
Una entrevista express que sirva de excusa para promocionar las dos noches que tendremos a The Mission en Razzmatazz en unas semanas. Cita obligada para todos los amantes del rock gótico. Vamos a charlar con Craig.

Hola, Craig. Un placer enorme poder intercambiar unas palabras contigo. Eres uno de mis referentes del mundo del rock gótico. Un saludo grande. ¿Cómo estás?

The Mission cuenta con una larga carrera. Fundados en 1985, ya son 35 años en activo, y conserváis la misma garra que al principio ¿Cuál es vuestro secreto?
Bueno, todos nos gustamos, lo cual es un buen comienzo. Todos disfrutamos al reunirnos para tocar algunas canciones geniales, salir de gira y divertirnos.
Iniciaste tu carrera en el seminal disco First and Last and Always de The Sisters of Mercy, un disco brutal. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de esa época y cómo ha envejecido este trabajo?
La primera vez que grabé con una banda llamada The Expelaires a finales de los 70, era el teclista. Gran parte de ese tiempo es borroso. Estábamos en una especie de montaña rusa y no duró mucho… ¡nos consumimos!
Por otro lado e incidiendo en The Sisters of Mercy. Andrew Eldritch lleva 40 años girando con solo tres discos publicados. ¿Cómo podemos interpretar esto? ¿No necesita o no sabe hacer música nueva? Porque podemos entender que sin las piezas fundamentales de la banda (como lo fuiste tu en 1985) no tiene suficiente potencial para crear algo nuevo…
No estoy seguro… ¿no hay ideas…?
También estuviste en The Cult, otra banda que admiramos. ¿Cómo ves este cambio de sonido de los últimos discos de Ian Astbury y Billy Duffy? Personalmente creo que se están alejando demasiado de los sonidos góticos y acercando demasiado al rock alternativo…
Realmente no he escuchado ninguna de las cosas más nuevas. Cuando los muchachos dejaron el Reino Unido en los años 80 para trabajar con Rick Rubin, realmente comenzaron a seguir ese camino «rockero». Tal vez el disco en el que toqué está un poco de vuelta… o al menos eso me gusta pensar.
Ahora, dejamos The Sisters of Mercy y The Cult y nos centramos en The Mission, que es mucho más relevante. Contáis con una larga trayectoria. Creo que ya son 11 álbumes de estudio, varios discos en directo y algún que otro recopilatorio. Echando la vista atrás, y en referencia a todo este trabajo, ¿de qué te sientes más orgullos y qué podría haber salido mejor en vuestra carrera?
Creo que durante este período de tiempo todos tomamos decisiones extrañas, algunas buenas, algunas malas, pero en general creo que lo hemos hecho realmente bien.
Corrígeme si me equivoco, pero Wayne Hussey, Simon Hinkler y Mike Kelly son el lineup actualmente. Wayne, Simon y tú, pese a idas y venidas, compartís banda desde 1986; sois prácticamente una familia. El tiempo desgasta pero vosotros seguís unidos. ¿Cómo lo hacéis? ¿Cómo trabajáis para que esta familia siga unida tras 35 años?
Todos vivimos en varias partes del mundo, por lo que no estamos en los bolsillos de los demás todo el tiempo, por lo que cuando nos juntamos apreciamos mucho más nuestro tiempo juntos.
Another Fall From Grace se publicó en 2016, siendo vuestro último trabajo. Un disco que recuperó vuestra mejor versión. ¿Cómo lleváis su sucesor? ¿Estáis trabajando el algo nuevo o de momento no podemos esperar un nuevo disco?
Nada planeado por el momento pero… ¿nunca se sabe? Cuando todos nos reunimos para los ensayos, podemos sentir nuevamente la necesidad de hacer algo más.
El último concierto de The Mission se remonta a finales de 2017. Entonces llevabais siete años girando anualmente. ¿Era necesario un descanso para volver con más ganas?
Creo que es correcto. Si hubiéramos seguido dando vueltas y más vueltas, podría haber comenzado a cansarnos y a añejarnos. Tras tener un descanso, nos entusiasma salir nuevamente.
En unas semanas emprendéis una gira muy larga con dobles citas en cada ciudad. Pasaréis por Barcelona, dos noches seguidas en Razzmatazz. La idea es que tocaréis dos repertorios completamente diferentes pero no sabemos mucho más. ¿Qué planes tenéis para esta gira? ¿Qué nos puedes anticipar?
¿Plan? ¡No hay plan! Tenemos un grupo de canciones y tocaremos diferentes canciones cada noche, en cada ciudad de la gira. Nuestro descanso fue necesario para volver con más fuerza. Los conciertos en Barcelona serán algo memorable.
Has actuado muchas veces en Barcelona. Como buen inglés, entiendo que te sientes cómodo en Barcelona y en España en general… buen tiempo, buena comida. ¿Qué piensas del público español? Ahora es el momento de criticar, no te preocupes…
Les amo. He tenido muchos buenos momentos en toda España, no solo estando de gira, sino también como un maldito turista.
Con tantos años ya a las espaldas, es un buen momento para que puedas escoger cuál o cuáles son los temas que mejor definen a The Mission. ¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas?
Piensa que es una pregunta imposible de responder, todos los días/situaciones pueden hacerte pensar en una canción u otra… Hay mucho, demasiado para elegir.
Y ya para cerrar, ¿qué podemos esperar de The Mission en el futuro?
Si pudiéramos ver el futuro, no sería muy emocionante…

Hello, Craig. It is a great pleasure to be able to exchange a few words with you. You are one of my references when it comes to Gothic rock. How are you?
Very well, thank you.
The Mission has a long career. Founded in 1985, you’ve been already 35 years active, and have the same energy as in the beginning. What is your secret?
Well, we all like each other which is a good start. We all enjoy getting together and playing some great songs, getting on the road and having some fun.
You started your career in the seminal First and Last and Always album by The Sisters of Mercy, an amazing record. What memories do you have of that era and how has this work aged?
I first recorded with a band called The Expelaires in the late 70’s, I was the keyboard player. A lot of that time is a blur. We were on some kind of roller coaster and it did not last very long… Burn out!
On the other hand and falling on The Sisters of Mercy. Andrew Eldritch has been touring with only three albums released in 40 years. How can we interpret this? He doesn’t need or doesn’t know how to make new music? Because we can understand that without the fundamental pieces of the band (as you were in 1985) you don’t have enough potential to create something new…
Not sure, no ideas…?
You were also in The Cult, another band that we admire. How do you see this sound change in the last Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy’s works? I personally think they are getting too far away from Gothic sounds and getting too close to alternative rock…
I have not really heard any of the newer stuff. When the guys left the UK in the 80’s to work with Rick Rubin, they really started to go down that «rock» road. Maybe the record I played on came back a little… I’d like to think.
Now, let’s talk about The Mission, which is much more relevant to me. You have a long history. I think you’re released already 11 studio albums, several live albums, and also some compilations. Looking back and referring to all this work, what are you most proud of and what could have come out better in your career?
I think over this amount of time we all make some odd choices, some good, some bad decisions but all in all I think we’ve done really well.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Simon Hinkler, Wayne Hussey and Mike Kelly are currently your workmates. With Simon and Wayne, despite comings and goings, you have been sharing band since 1986; they are practically your family. Time flies but you remain united. How do you do it? What’s the secret to keep this family together after 35 years?
We all live in various parts of the world so we are not in each others pockets all the time, so when we get together we appreciate our time together much more.
Another Fall From Grace was published in 2016, being your last work. It is an album that recovered the best version of you. What about its successor? Are you working on something new or for now there is not a new album coming?
Nothing planned at the moment but you never know?? When we all get together for the rehearsals we may again feel the need to do something else.
The last concert of The Mission dates back to the end of 2017. Then you had been touring for seven years, non stop. Was a break necessary to come willing to do new things?
I think you are correct. If we had just kept going round and round it may have started to become tired and stale. Having a break makes us excited to get out again.
In a few weeks you’ll start a very long tour with double dates in each city. You will play in Barcelona two nights in a row at Razzmatazz. The idea is that you will play two completely different repertoires but we don’t know much more. What can we expect of this tour? What can you anticipate? Any plans?
Plan? There is no plan!! We have a pool of songs and we will play different songs every night in every city on the tour. Our rest was necessary to return more strongly, the shows in Barcelona will be something memorable.
You have played many times in Barcelona. Like a good British, I understand that you feel comfortable in Barcelona and in Spain in general. Good weather, good food. What do you think of the Spanish audience? Now is the time to criticize, do not worry…
Love them, have had many good times all over Spain, not just when on tour but when as a damned tourist.
With so many years already on the back, it is a good time for you to choose which is or which are the songs that best define The Mission. What are your favorite Mission songs?
Think that’s an impossible question, everyday/situation may make you think of one song or another… There are plenty to choose from.
And now to close. What can we expect from The Mission in the future?
If we could see the future, it would not be very exciting.
