Hola, Erik. Gracias por usar tu tiempo en Science of Noise. ¿Qué tal?
Gracias a vosotros por entrevistarme. Estoy muy bien, gracias.
Antes de nada, deja que me preocupe por tu salud. Os he visto en directo dos veces (Rockfest Barcelona 2018 e Into de Grat Unknown Tour, Barcelona, 2018), y en ambos shows puedo imaginarme que tuviste que ir al hospital al acabar. ¿Cómo puede un ser humano resistir un tormento físico así?

2018-2019 parecen los años españoles de H.E.A.T. Además de los shows mencionados, el próximo agosto estaréis de vuelta en Barcelona, en el Ripollet Rock Festival. ¿Cómo es la relación de la banda con España?
España es, sin duda, uno de mis países preferidos en todo el mundo, y tenemos una conexión muy especial y fuerte con nuestros fans de allí. Habéis estado apoyándonos desde el día 1 y os lo agradecemos.
Los que te siguen en redes sociales te habrán podido ver por Sudáfrica. ¿Ves alguna esperanza para el heavy metal y hard rock allá abajo?
Lo siento pero sé muy poco del mercado musical y la cultura en Sudáfrica como para comentarlo. Pero estoy aprendiendo…
Estás en la banda desde Adress the Nation (2012). ¿Cuál es tu tema preferidos de los álbumes en los que apareces? ¿Y en los que no apareces?
Mi preferida de las que canto es “A Shot at Redemption”, y de las que no canto sería “Beg Beg Beg” (o quizá “Cry”)
El diciembre pasado os pudimos ver de gira con Shiraz Lane y One desire. Allá arriba, en los países nórdicos, también tenéis a eclipse, Crazy Lixx y tantos otros. ¿Qué os dan de comer para tener una escena rockera tan espectacular?
No sé si tendré razón, quizá soy algo subjetivo, pero creo que tenemos que agradecer mucho a Abba, ya que crearon una herencia cultural de la que estamos muy orgullosos. También Europe, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ace of Base, Max Martin, Denniz Pop.
Quizá hacemos gran música porque el clima es muy frío 10 meses al año y nos quedamos en casa componiendo.
Durante el último tour, en tu cuenta de Instagram, pudimos ver que te gustaban mucho Shiraz Lane,a l menos en lo personal. Pero ¿qué hay de su música? ¿Qué opinas de Shiraz Lane y quien crees que puede ser la próxima gran banda nórdica de hard rock?
Shiraz Lane son una de esas bandas que te gustan instantáneamente cuando la ves. Individuos muy carismáticos, gran frontman y buenas composiciones. Es obvio que trabajan duro y no esperan que nada les llegue gratis.
No conozco ninguna banda que despunte, pero quiero hacer un llamamiento por los suecos Astral Doors. Hace poco que empecé a escucharlos y pueden considerarme un fan.
Into de Grat Unknown es de 2017, y estamos ya en 2019. ¿Planes de material nuevo?
El nuevo álbum sale en 2020 pero sacaremos el primer single este verano.
Noruega, Finlandia y los países nórdicos son famosos, también, por el death, black metal y, en general, todo lo extremo. ¿Te gusta? ¿Cuál es el gusto musical de Erik?
Para serte sincero, lo que me pone de verdad es el rock n’ roll y blues de los 60. Amo Creedence Clear Water Revival / John Fogerty, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, etc.
Ver a H.E.A.T en directo es divertido, una obligación para los fans del hard rock y el heavy metal melódico. ¿Qué canciones crees que funcionan mejor en el escenario?
“A Shot at Redemption” y “Tearing Down the Walls”. Siempre es un placer tocar esos temas.
La formación de H.E.A.T, más allá de ti y de Dave (que estuvo, se fue y volvió) es bastante estable. ¿Cómo se mantiene una relación de cinco tíos? ¿Hay peleas y fricciones o es todo una balsa?
Hemos tenido nuestros más y nuestros menos a lo largo de los años pero nunca nos ha dado miedo sentarnos y hablar de nuestros puntos de vista diferentes; así que siempre hemos manejado nuestros problemas antes de que se convirtieran en grandes problemas. Tenemos una regla en esta banda: haz lo que te salga de los cojones pero tienes que estar puntual en el escenario y dar a los fans lo mejor que tengas. Lo merecen. Supongo que somos liberales, en ese sentido.
¿Tu álbum preferido de todos los tiempos?
Varía, pero ahora mismo es Premonition Live (1997) de John Fogerty. Escucha su “Let’s rock n’roll” justo antes de que empieza a tocar “Green River”. Eso resume bastante mi mentalidad.
Antes hemos hablado de tus canciones preferidas de H.E.A.T. en dos etapas, pero si tuvieras que escoger tan solo un tema que representase la música del grupo, ¿cuál sería?
El single que escucharéis en los próximos meses.
Si pudieses escoger 3 bandas para girar con H.E.A.T, sin importar si están en activo o no, ¿cuáles escogerías?
Difícil. No soy el apropiado para responder.

Before anything else, let me worry about your health. I have seen you live twice (RockFest Barcerlona 2018 and Into The Great Unknown tour, Barcelona, 2018), and in both shows, I can figure you had to go to the hospital afterwards. How can a human being resist such fiscal torment?

2018-2019 seems the Spanish year(s) for H.E.A.T. Beyond the shows above mentioned, next august you will be back in Barcelona, in the Ripollet Rock festival. How’s the band relationship with Spain?
Spain is definitely one of my favorite countries in the world and we have a very special and strong connection with our fans there. You guys have been supportive since day 1 and we thank you for it.
The ones who follow you on social networks have had the chance of seeing you in South Africa. Do you see any hope for heavy metal and hard rock down there?
Sorry but I know too little about the music market and culture in South Africa at the moment to comment on that. But I’m learning…
You’re in the band since Adress the Nation (2012) album. Which is you favorite song of the albums you’re in? And of the ones you’re not sining?
My personal favorite that I’m singing is “A Shot At Redemption” and the song I’m not singing would be “Beg beg beg” (or maybe “Cry”).
Las December we could see you touring with Shiraz Lane and One Desire. Up there, in the Nordic countries, you also have Eclipse, Crazy Lixx and so many others. What do they feed you to have such a great hard rock scene?
I’m not sure if I’m right, maybe I’m being too subjective here, but I think we have a lot to thank Abba for and that they created a cultural heritage that we are very proud of. Also Europe, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ace of Base, Max Martin, Denniz Pop etc. Maybe we make great music because the weather is so cold 10/12 months so we stay inside writing music instead.
During the last tour, on your Instagram account, we could see you liked Shiraz Lane quite a lot, at least them as people. But what about their music? What do you thing of Shiraz Lane and who do you think can be the next Nordic great hard rock band?
Shiraz Lane are one of those bands you instantly like when you see them. Very charismatic individuals, great frontman and good songwriting. It’s obvious that they work hard and don’t expect anything to come for free. I’m don’t really know any upcoming Nordic hard rock bands but I want to give a shout-out to the Swedish rock band Astral Doors. I just recently started listening to them and they can consider me a fan.
Into the Great Unknown is from 2017, and we’re already in 2019. Any plans of new material?
New album is coming in 2020 but we will release the first single this summer!
Norway, Finland and the Nordic countries are also famous for death, black metal and, in general, extreme metal. Do you like it? What’s Erik’s music taste?
To tell you the truth, what really gets me going is 60’s rock n’ roll and blues. I love Creedence Clear Water Revival/John Fogerty, Little Richard, Elvis Presley etc.
Seeing H.E.A.T. live is a fun event, a must for most hard rock and melodic heavy metal fans. Which song do you think works better on stage?
A shot at redemption and Tearing down the walls. Always a pleasure playing those songs.
H.E.A.T’s line up, besides you and Dave (who was, was gone and then back) is quite stable. How can a relationship between 5 guys can be hold? Are there frictions and fights or is everything a calmed sea?
We’ve had our discussions over the years but we’ve never been afraid to sit down together and talk about our different opinions. So we’ve always dealt with our problems before they turned into big problems. We have one rule in this band: Do whatever the fuck you want but be on stage on time and give the fans the best you’ve got. They deserve it. I guess we are very liberal in that sense.
Your favorite album EVER.
It varies but right now it’s John Fogerty – Premonition live (1997). Listen to his “Let’s rock n’ roll” just before he starts playing Green river. That pretty much sums up my mentality.
Before we have talked about your favorite H.E.A.T’s song in two periods of time, but if you had to choose only one song to represent H.E.A.T’s music, which one would it be?
The unreleased singles that you will hear in the upcoming months.
If you could choose 3 bands to tour with H.E.A.T., no matter if they’re active or not, which 3 would you choose?
Though one. I’m not really the right guy to answer that.
Llevo en esto del heavy más de media vida. Helloween y Rhapsody dieron paso a Whitesnake y Eclipse, pero Kiske sigue siendo Dios.
