Entrevista a Fabian Hildebrandt, guitarrista de Deserted Fear: ‘Ser honestos y respetarnos mutuamente todo el tiempo es muy importante para nosotros’

SofN: Bienvenidos a Science of Noise y muchas gracias por dedicar algo de tiempo a responder estas preguntas. ¿Cómo estás?

¡Bien, muchas gracias por la entrevista!

SofN: Habéis estado en activo desde 2007 y cuando uno escucha el nuevo álbum y los anteriores, puede ver una evolución en vuestro sonido, desde un death metal más de la vieja escuela hasta un death metal melódico, como sueco. ¿A qué se debe?

Jajaja, tienes razón pero no fue premeditado. Hace mucho tiempo, entre 2007 y 2010, ya éramos un poco más melódicos, pero luego pasamos de la habitación de infancia de Mahnes con batería electrónica y mini amplificadores a nuestra primera sala de ensayo con batería real y amplificadores potentes, y todas nuestras canciones sonaban como una mierda… jajaja. Así que tiramos todas nuestras canciones y comenzamos a escribir nuevas para lo que sería nuestro primer disco, My Empire. Hoy en día entendemos mucho mejor nuestros instrumentos, y es más fácil para nosotros escribir melodías y armonías, y creo que por eso tocamos un death metal más melódico. Evolucionamos naturalmente.

SofN: Siempre es bueno encontrar bandas que hayan podido mantener su formación intacta desde el primer día. ¿Cuál es el secreto detrás de ello?

¡Oh, gracias! No hay ningún secreto, pero creo que la razón principal es que no solo somos compañeros de banda, sino que también somos amigos. Ser honestos y respetarnos mutuamente todo el tiempo es muy importante. Y somos una banda democrática, aunque eso es bastante fácil siendo un trío… jajaja.

SofN: El death metal siempre se caracteriza por temáticas de sangre, horror, guerra, etc. ¿De qué hablan vuestras letras?

Cuestionar la sociedad, la contaminación, de caer y volver a alzarse; cosas con las que todos tenemos que lidiar. Desde hace 20 años, tenemos una escena global de lucha ambientalista por una energía limpia, agua limpia y menos consumo, porque la contaminación y la destrucción del medio ambiente, así como la extinción de las especies, está directamente relacionada con el crecimiento económico. Hoy nuestro sistema económico causa una extinción masiva comparable a la extinción de los dinosaurios. En 20 años, y aún conociendo los problemas, no logramos adaptarnos. Lo peor es lo que no hicimos. Eso es algo que abordamos en nuestro primer video, «Welcome to Reality».

SofN: La escena death metal en Alemania no es tan conocida como la sueca o la estadounidense, pero sé que hay un buen puñado de bandas realmente buenas. ¿Podrías recomendarnos algunas bandas jóvenes que te hayan sorprendido recientemente?

Tienes razón, Alemania es conocida por el thrash y el heavy metal, ¡pero tenemos bandas de death metal increíbles! Sulphur Aeon lanzó un álbum brutal recientemente y mezclé el nuevo disco de Burn Down Eden, ¡quiénes me sorprendieron mucho! Deny the Urge, Revel In Flesh, Endseeker,… ¡la lista es muy larga!

SofN: ¿Tenéis planes de realizar una gira por Europa después del lanzamiento de vuestro nuevo álbum? Si es así, ¿vendréis a España?

Estaremos de gira en marzo, pero principalmente por Alemania y, lamentablemente, nada en España. Tocamos en el Resurrection de 2017 y viajé a Barcelona hace años. Los españoles son muy amables y el paisaje también es fantástico, ¡así que esperamos volver pronto!

SofN: Si pudieras organizar una gira con otras tres bandas, siendo vosotros los cabezas de cartel, ¿cuáles elegiríais? (Bandas actuales o bandas que ya no existan)

Esa es una pregunta muy difícil, pero espontáneamente diré Dismember, Bolt Thrower y los viejos In Flames. Pero no podremos hacerlo, ya que tendríamos un cuello como el de Corpsegrinder Fischer una vez finalizada la gira… jajaja.

SofN: Cuando empezasteis en esto, ¿cuáles fueron vuestras principales influencias?

Cuando empezamos a hacer música, eso fue mucho antes de Deserted Fear cuando nuestro cantante Mahne y yo teníamos una banda en el instituto y escuchábamos cosas como Metallica, Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park y The Offspring. Más tarde nos metimos de lleno en el death metal y comenzamos a escuchar In Flames, The Black Dahlia Murder, Arch Enemy, Dismember, Necrophobic, Asphyx y todas las grandes bandas.

SofN: Ya habéis lanzado un par de álbumes con Century Media. ¿Cómo es trabajar con una discográfica tan grande como esta?

Es genial, porque al final trabajas con verdaderos jefes del metal que aman la música en primer lugar. Así que tratan de hacer lo mejor para el artista y probablemente trabajan más horas a la semana que las personas en los trabajos diurnos normales. ¡Es genial para nosotros estar en Century Media, pues tienen una red enorme y nos ayudan a difundir nuestra música por todo el mundo!

SofN: En 11 años de carrera, estoy bastante seguro de que habéis tocado en un montón de lugares. ¿Cuál ha sido vuestro mejor concierto o experiencia y cuál el peor, un desastre total?

Bfffff, como dices, tocamos mucho y es difícil elegir uno. Creo que el peor fue un show de nuestros inicios. Tocamos los últimos (después de los cabezas de cartel) y ya era bastante tarde y el público estaba más o menos camino a casa. No quedaba cerveza después del show y el promotor nos mostró la habitación donde podíamos dormir, que era la de sus perros. Nos encantan los perros, pero olía a orina por todas partes y el colchón (para 5 tíos… jajaja) estaba completamente cubierto de pelos de perro. Por suerte, nuestro cantante y batería no bebían antes de los shows, así que pudimos conducir de regreso a casa durante toda la noche… jajaja. Por supuesto, nos pagaron solo la mitad de lo acordado y no vendimos nada de merch… jajaja. Afortunadamente, con el tiempo esto ha cambiado y una de las mejores experiencias, además de las del Resurrection Fest y Devilstone en Lituania, fue en el Party.San Open Air el verano pasado. Tocamos bastante tarde después de algunas bandas enormes y nos pusimos bastante nerviosos por si podíamos igualar las expectativas de los otros festivales y, por suerte, lo hicimos (o debería decir, los fans)… ¡y tuvimos una audiencia aún mayor! ¡Eso fue una locura!

SofN: Welcome to Science of Noise and thank you very much for your time to answer these questions. how are you?

Fine, thanks a lot for doing the interview with us!

SofN: You have been active since 2007 and when one listens to your new album and the previous ones, you can see an evolution in your sound, from a old school death metal to a very Swedish melodic death metal. How come?

Hahaha, you are right but it wasn’t planned. A long time ago, between 2007 and 2010 we already have been a bit more melodic but then we moved from Mahnes child room with electronic drums and mini amps to our first rehearsal room with real drums and loud amps and all our songs sounded like shit… hahaha. So we thrown away all our songs and started to write new songs, our first record “My Empire” in the end. Nowadays we understand our instruments a lot better, its easier for us to write melodies and harmonies and I think that’s why we play a more melodic death metal. We evolved naturally.

SofN: It’s always nice to find bands that have been able to keep its lineup intact from the very first day. What is the secret behind it?

Oh thanks! There is no secret but I think the main reason is that we are not just band mates, we are also friends. To be honest and to respect each other all the time is very important. And we are a democratic band, but that’s quiet easy as a trio… hahaha.

SofN: Death metal is always characterized by a thematic of gore, horror, war, etc. What do your lyrics talk about?

Question society, pollution, downfall and departure – things we all have to deal with. Since 20 years we have a global scene of environmentalist fighting for clean energy, clean water and less consumption, because pollution and destruction of the environment and extinction of species is directly connected to economic growth. Today our economic system causes a mass extinction comparable to the great dying of the dinosaurs. In 20 years knowing the problems, we did not manage to adapt. Worst is what we did not do. That’s something we address in our first video, “Welcome to Reality”.

SofN: Death metal scene in Germany is not as well known as the Swedish or the American ones but I know that you have a good cast of really good bands. Could you recommend us some young bands that has surprised you recently?

You are right, Germany is known for thrash and heavy metal, but we have a lot awesome death metal bands! Sulphur Aeon released a killer album recently and I mixed the new record of Burn Down Eden, who surprised me a lot! Deny the Urge, Revel In Flesh, Endseeker, Lifeless… it’s a long list!

SofN: Do you have plans to tour Europe after the release of your newest album? If so, will you come to Spain?

We are on tour in March, but mainly Germany and sadly nothing in Spain. We played Resurrection in 2017 and I travelled to Barcelona years ago, Spanish people are very kind and the landscape is also great, so we hope to come back soon!

SofN: If you could set up a tour with four other bands, being you guys of them, which ones would you choose? (Actual bands or bands that do not exist anymore)

That’s a very hard question, but spontaneously Dismember, Bolt Thrower & old In Flames. But we couldn’t do this, we would have a neck like Corpsegrinder Fischer after this tour… hahaha.

SofN: When you started this, what were your main influences?

When we started making music, that was a long time before Deserted Fear when our singer Mahne and me had a school band, we listened to stuff like Metallica, Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and The Offspring. Later we got into death metal and started listening to In Flames, The Black Dahlia Murder, Arch Enemy, Dismember, Necrophobic, Asphyx and all the great bands.

SofN: You’ve already released a couple of albums with Century Media. What’s it like to work with a huge label like this one?

Its cool, because in the end you work with true metal heads who love music in the first place! So they try to do the very best for the artist and they probably work more hours a week than people in normal day jobs. Its great for us being on Century Media, they have a huge network and they help us to spread our music all over the world!

SofN: In 11 years of career, I’m pretty sure you have played in countless places. Which one has been your best concert or experience and which one the worst, a total disaster?

Puuuh, like you said, we played a lot and its hard to pick something. I think the worst one was a show in the very beginning. We played last (after the headliner) and it was pretty late and the audience was more or less on the way home already. There was no beer left after the show and the promoter showed us the room where we can sleep and this was the room for his dogs. We love dogs but it smelled like piss everywhere and the one mattress (for 5 guys… haha) was completely covered with dog hairs. Luckily our singer and drummer don’t drink before the show, so were able to drive back home the whole night… haha. Of course we got paid just half of the deal and did not sell any merchandise haha. Luckily time has change and one of the best experiences beside Resurrection Fest and Devilstone in Lithuania, has been Party.San Open Air last summer. We got a pretty late slot after some huge bands and we have been pretty nervous if we can match the festivals expectations and luckily we (or I shall say the fans) did and we had an even bigger audience! That was just crazy!
