Vicious Rumors vienen de gira tras la suspensión de la misma el pasado agosto. El grupo celebra los 40 años de carrera y los 30 del lanzamiento del seminal Digital Dictator. Jordi Tàrrega contacta con Geoff Thorpe, líder y guitarrista de la formación para que nos avance qué se nos vine encima. Son considerados una de las bandas que ayudó a definir el power metal americano de los 80 y el thrash metal y han tenido en sus filas a músicos de primer nivel, aunque para todos será el vocalista Carl Albert el más añorado de todos ellos. Thorpe no ha perdido ni las ganas ni la ilusión de sus primeros días y sus palabras son puro sentimiento. Cita obligada para una de las bandas pioneras del estilo.

SofN: Hola Geoff, siempre es un placer hablar como una leyenda como tú. La idea es hacer esta entrevista para darle visibilidad a vuestro próximo concierto en Barcelona y el resto de fechas por España.
¡Muchísimas gracias! Para mi también es un honor. Me encanta el mero hecho de saber que volvemos a tocar por España y por todos los fans y amigos que allí están El grupo está “on fire” ¡Estamos preparados para estas próximas noches épicas de heavy metal!
SofN: Bueno, finalmente parece que vais a volver a nuestra ciudad… ¿Qué pasó la última vez, teníais que tocar en agosto, pero finalmente la cosa fue imposible?
¡Vicious Rumurs nunca cancelamos un show si no es por una razón importante! Actualmente estamos trabajando con otro agente y promotor. Llegamos a Alemania preparados para tirar de carretera hasta España, pero en último momento el trato había cambiado. Estábamos preparados para hacer el largo viaje hasta allí, pero esto es un negocio. Nos vimos forzados a posponerlo todo. El grupo posee una alineación matadora y un show acorde con ella. ¡No os perdáis a Vicious Rumors en Barcelona! ¡Esta vez toca rock sólido, vamos a estar allí!
SofN: Estáis celebrando vuestro 30 aniversario de Digital Dictator. ¿Vais a tocar el disco entero en vuestros próximos shows en España?
Sí, pero no sólo el Digital Dictator entero, ¡también muchos otros clásicos! Nuestro directo es puro poder y energía. Vicious Rumors están delante de su gira más grande en mucho tiempo. ¡30 años desde ese disco! (de hecho 31 para ser más concreto) y cuatro décadas de Vicious Rumors. Nuestro directo es fuego y sangre cada vez que pisamos un escenario. Creo que nos hemos ganado una buena reputación ya que lo damos todo de nosotros mismos. Nuestra forma de trabajo es muy parecida a la de un equipo deportivo… ¡nuestro objetivo es simplemente el de ganar en cada partido!
SofN: Tienes nuevos miembros en el grupo como Nick Courtney a las voces y Cody Green en el bajo. ¿En qué bandas estaban antes de tocar con vosotros?
Ambos provienen de la escena local de Portland. Estos chicos tocan con muchísima pasión y fuego. Siempre junto a mi increíble guitarrista Gunnar Dugrey, estamos delante de una de las alineaciones más potentes en los 40 años de carrera. Larry y yo nos lo pasamos genial con ellos. Es genial el tener a una banda completa que está dispuesta a cumplir en todo sin tener que aguantar comportamientos de diva o sin la típica personalidad que te reclama algo especial para él y no quiere trabajar duro. ¡Estos chicos están a todas! ¡Juntos destruimos escenarios por todo el mundo al más puro estilo Vicious Rumors!
SofN: La otra semana estuve en un concierto de Vinnie Moore y en la otra vi a Tilen Huldrap en directo tocando con U.D.O.. Ambos fueron miembros de Vicious Rumors en diferentes épocas. ¿Sigues teniendo buena relación con ambos?
¡Absolutamente! Ambos son de los que mejor nota sacaron al graduarse en la escuela de heavy metal Geoff Thorpe (risas). Tilen es uno de mis mejores amigos y estamos en contacto constantemente. Él siempre formará parte de Vicious Rumors. ¡Los dos son músicos de clase mundial! ¡Tienes que ser incluso mejor que ellos para que te contraten en Vicious Rumors! (Risas).
SofN: Si echamos la vista atrás y miramos todos los músicos que han pasado por Vicious Rumors vemos nombres rutilantes y… ¡más de 40 personas! ¿Por qué te resulta tan difícil mantener una alineación estable?
No, amigo mío. No es más difícil que cualquier otro equipo de trabajo. ¡En 40 años de trayectoria los cambios de personal son algo inherente en la vida! Lo realmente difícil es mantener el sueño vivo. Judas Priest, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth y toda banda que lleve más de 20 años en activo se ha visto obligada a tener que hacer cambios de formación. Pero siempre doy la oportunidad de continuar. Cuando este punto de vista cambia la sangre nueva es bienvenida siempre. El espíritu, el fuego, la pasión, siempre unida a la composición, tiene que ser la misma desde el primer día. ¡Dar todo lo que tienes en todo momento, eso es Vicious Rumors!
SofN: ¿Qué es lo que echas más de menos de los tiempos en los que empezabas cuando estabas componiendo discos como Soldiers of the Night y Digital Dictator? O en otras palabras… ¿Qué cambios ha habido desde 1985 hasta día de hoy?
Bueno… ¡todo! Cuando no había internet había mucho más misterio respecto a las bandas que grababan un disco. Ahora todo el mundo lo sabe casi todo sobre el grupo. Hubo un momento realmente especial cuando Vicious Rumors fueron, en parte, creadores del power y el thrash metal. Es algo de lo que me siento muy orgulloso.
SofN: ¿Si tuvieras que confesarme quién sería el cantante ideal para Vicious Rumors me contestarías que el tristemente desaparecido Carl Albert? ¿Cómo le definirías en pocas palabras?
Sencillamente te diría que él fue uno de los mejores de la historia. Y no porque lo opine yo, la opinión de la industria y los fans así lo corroboran. Carl era una persona muy especial. Divertido, listo, súper talentoso… Tuve el privilegio de compartir escenario con él y también todos esos años juntos. ¡Vivimos la vida de 10 hombres juntos! Él ya es inmortal. Vicious Rumors tocaremos un show muy especial con su hijo Keven Gorsky a las voces para el festival Keep It True, en el tramo final de la gira europea. ¡Keven se parece y canta igual que su padre! Será una noche importante para la historia del heavy metal.
SofN: Me gustaron especialmente vuestros dos discos en directo Live You to Death. ¿Consideras que son los directos definitivos de Vicious Rumors? ¿Por qué no se reeditan como un disco doble?
¡Muchísimas gracias! Me encanta que los hayas disfrutado. Si te han gustado te va a encantar nuestro último directo grabado en DVD en el que celebramos nuestro 40 aniversario en Alemania. SofN: En el disco Cyberchrist hay un tema titulado “Barcelona”. Es mi ciudad y no tengo ese disco, tampoco he podido encontrar por Youtube dicha composición. Así que dime, ¿por qué elegiste este nombre par el tema? Y cuéntame qué habláis en la letra.
¡Es un tema instrumental! Me inspiró la magia de tu bonita ciudad. Es un tema muy atmosférico. Y creo que sólo la he tocado una vez en mi vida, fue en un funeral de unos buenos amigos míos. Espero que la disfrutes cuando la consigas escuchar.

Vicious Rumors strikes back soon. They are coming to Spain after they could not play in the last august. VR celebrates 40 years of career and 30 years of Digital Dictator’s issue, probably their most famous album. Jordi Tàrrega contacted Geoff Thorpe, leader and guitar player of the banda in order to tell us what is going to be in their upcoming shows. Vicious Rumors is considered one of the bands that helped to define the American power metal of the 80’s and thrash metal, and the band have had fantastic musicians along of these years. But probably, for all the fans, Carl Albert will be the most remembered one. Thorpe has not lost the desire and the illusion of his first days and his words are pure feeling. Their shows are a must for see one of the pioneer bands of the style.
SofN: Hi Geoff, it is a pleasure always to talk with a legend like you. This interview is in order to promote your upcoming shows in Barcelona and Spain.

SofN: Finally, it seems that Vicious Rumors are coming to our town. What happened last July, you had to play in Spain but it was impossible?
Vicious Rumors would never just cancel a show for no reason! At the time we we’re working with another agent and promoter. We arrived in Germany ready to drive to Spain and at the last minute the deal was changed on us! We we’re ready to make the long journey but this is a business ! We were forced to postpone . We’ve been doing this too long to except the deal being changed at the last min. We have a killer line up and a great show! Don’t miss Vicious Rumors in Barcelona!!! This time is rock soild!! We’ll be there!!!
SofN: Are you celebrating the 30th anniversary of Digital Dictator. Are you going to play this album in its entirety in your upcoming shows in Spain?
Yes! not only the whole digital album but many classics too! the show is full of power and energy! VR is having our biggest touring year ever in 2019 !! 30 years (31 years now) and 40 years of Vicious Rumors ! we’re playing with blood n fire at every show!! I think we have an excellent reputation for giving our all live in concert. We work together much like a sports team… our goal is simple WIN EVERY GAME!!!
SofN: You have new members in the band: Nick Courtney on vocals and Cody Green on bass guitar. In which bands they played before Vicious Rumors?
They both came from local bands in the Portland area. These guys play with so much passion and fire! Along with my incredible guitarist Gunnar Dugrey this line up is one pi f the strongest in our 40 years of being a band!! Larry and I can’t throw enough at them!! its it’s so great having a full band that wants to do it all with no diva’s or personalitys that need special attention or dont want to work hard! These guys do it all !! Together we’re destroying stages worldwide in true Vicious Rumors style!
SofN: In the last weeks I attended at a Vinnie Moore show and at Udo’s concert with Tilen Huldrap on bass. Both were members of Vicious Rumors. Do you still have good relationship with both?
Absolutely! Those two are some of my top graduates of Geoff Thorpe School of Heavy Metal!! Hahaha!! Tilen is one of my best friends … we’re in touch all the time. He will always be a part of Vicious Rumors. Both of them world class players! you have to be to even get hired into Vicious Rumors!!
SofN: Taking a look at all the members who had played in Vicious Rumors we can see a lot of fantastic musicians, and more than 40 people! Why it is so difficult to have a regular line up in your band?
No my friend! its it’s no more difficult than any other long time outfit . After 40 years change is just part of life! its keeping the dream alive that’s difficult. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Iced Earth and about every other band that’s been around 20 plus years has gone through changing line ups! I offer a certain opportunity . When that vision changes I welcome a new blood into the band. The spirit , fire and passion along with the song writing as been the same as day 1. Give it all you have everytime! that’s Vicious Rumors!!
SofN: What do you miss from the early times in your beginnings in albums like Soldiers of the Night and Digital Dictator? In other words, what have changed from 1985 until now?
Well… Everything!! before the internet there was a lot more mystery to a recording artist. Now everyone knows almost everything. LOL… it was a special time when VR was part of the creators of power and thrash metal. Something I’m very proud of.
SofN: If you had to tell me who is the perfect singer for Vicious Rumors it would be Carl Albert? How do you can define him?
He was simply one of the very best ever! Not because I say so… the industry and fans made that a fact. He was a special person. funny, clever, super talented … I had the honor of sharing the stage and wonderful years together! We lived the life of 10 men ! He is forever Immortal !! Vicious Rumors will play a special show with his son Keven Gorsky on vocals at the Keep It True Festival at the end of our European tour leg. Keven looks and sounds like his dad !! it will be a night of metal history!!
SofN: I specially loved your live albums Live you to Death. Do you think they are the best live albums in your career? Why did you not release a double album issue?

SofN: In the album Cyberchrist there is a song called Barcelona. This is my city but I don’t have the album yet and it is not possible to listen to in Youtube. Why did you choose this name for the song? and please, tell me something about its lyrics.
This song is an instrumental… I was inspired by the magic of your beautiful city… its it’s an atmospheric peice. I’ve only performed it once at a good friends funeral . I hope you enjoy it when you get the chance.
