Hampus Klang es un tipo curioso y peculiar. Aparte de riffear para los suecos Bullet, es uno de los organizadores del Muskelrock Festival. El plan es sencillo: juntas algo de pasta con unos cuantos colegas y te compras un parque de atracciones en desuso, a poder ser cerquita de casa, y te montas la madre de todos los festivales, con Thor, el dios del trueno y fuerza, como protagonista. Dónde hay que firmar y, sobre todo, ¿cuánto debe valer el Tibidabo?
Entre birra y birra el bueno de Hampus ha tenido tiempo para contestar a nuestras preguntas, hablarnos un poco sobre sus últimos conciertos en nuestro país y su próxima visita abriendo para Ross the Boss.

SofN: Hola, Hampus. ¿Cómo estás? Muchas gracias por pasar este tiempo respondiendo estas preguntas para nosotros.
¡Hola! Estoy bien. Ahora mismo estamos ensayando para la próxima gira y esperamos veros pronto a todos los fans europeos.
SofN: Ha pasado aproximadamente medio año desde que sacasteis vuestro último álbum Dust to Gold (2018). Con la perspectiva del tiempo, ¿cómo habéis visto su recepción y cuáles son las canciones que crees que están funcionando mejor en directo?
Estábamos realmente felices con el resultado final del álbum y la recepción ha sido totalmente genial. Pasamos mucho tiempo escribiendo las canciones y tuvimos una buena cooperación con Mankan, quien grabó el álbum. Las canciones que han funcionado bien en vivo son «Speed and Attack», «Rogue Soldier», «Highway Love», «Dust to Gold», «Wildfire», «Fuel the Fire» y «Ain’t Enough». La mayoría de la gente parece conocer mejor estas dos últimas, ya que hicimos videos de estas canciones. Esperamos poder hacer alguno más.
SofN: Hace algunos meses vinisteis a Barcelona y ofrecisteis un espectáculo increíble. Ahora volvéis abriendo para una leyenda como Ross the Boss. ¿Cuáles son los pros y los contras, en tu opinión, de tocar en giras propias como cabezas de cartel, en lugar de abriendo para bandas más grandes? ¿Qué esperas de este tour?
Cuando Ross nos pidió que nos uniéramos, no podíamos decirle no a semejante leyenda. Le conocimos en el Rock Hard Festival hace muchos años y nos llevamos muy bien y bebimos mucha cerveza juntos. Siempre me ha gustado tocar en España porque los españoles son totalmente salvajes. Esperemos que esta vez haya una multitud todavía más grande ahora que venimos con Ross the Boss y una fiesta aún más grande después del show. Por supuesto, es divertido ser cabezas de cartel y ser capaces de llevar más cosas a los escenarios y extrañaremos a nuestra Bulletcrew, pero podemos comenzar a beber cerveza antes si no somos los titulares.
SofN: Vuestra música e imagen están fuertemente arraigadas a principios de los 80. ¿Qué es lo que más te fascina de esa época y qué crees que nos hemos perdido?
¡¡Me encanta el heavy metal de principios de los 80!! Todo sonaba y se veía mejor. Hoy en día, la mayoría de las bandas tienen guitarras demasiado distorsionadas, bombos sin chicha, portadas de álbumes feas y cortes de cabello horribles. Creo que todas las bandas deberían parecerse a The Ramones.
SofN: ¿Te gustan las nuevas tendencias del heavy metal, o te identificas un poco más con la ex banda de Ross, Manowar, y su opinión sobre lo que es el verdadero y lo que es el falso metal?
Hmmm… bueno, no me gusta el metal que tiene dos cantantes. Una voz limpia y otra enfadada, ni los sintetizadores. También me gusta el death y el thrash metal de la vieja escuela. Si suena bien, es metal de verdad para mí, tan simple como eso.
SofN: Os aproximáis a vuestro XXº Aniversario como banda y Dust to Gold es vuestro séptimo álbum. ¿Dónde os gustaría ver que os ha llevado este disco una vez estéis listos para entrar de nuevo al estudio para grabar su continuación?
¡Oh, mierda! El tiempo vuela … Comencé a tocar con Hell Hofer en 1996 cuando nos conocimos en la escuela. Creo que lo hemos pasado genial durante todo este tiempo y espero que podamos continuar juntos 20 años más. Creo que nos hemos convertido en mejores compositores con el paso de los años. Solo espero que la banda se haga un poco más grande tras cada álbum y, mientras sea divertido, ¡continuaremos haciendo heavy metal!

SofN: Hi there, Hampus. How are you? Thank you very much for spending this some time answering these questions for us.
Hello! I’m doin’ just fine, were are now rehearsing for the upcoming tour and looking forward to soon see you all headbangers of Europe again.
SofN: It has been about half a year since you put out your last album Dust to Gold (2018). With the perspective of time, how has its reception been and what are the songs that you feel are working better live?
Were really happy about how the album turned out and the reception has been totally great. We spend a lot of time writing the songs and we had a good cooperation with Mankan who recorded the album. The songs that has worked out good live is «Speed and Attack», «Rogue Soldier», «Highway Love», «Dust to Gold», «Wildfire», «Fuel the Fire» y «Ain’t Enough». Most people seems to know better the last two songs I just mentioned ‘cause we did videos to these songs. Hopefully we will do one more video from the album.
SofN: Some months ago you visited us in Barcelona and you played an awesome show. Now you are coming back supporting a legend like Ross the Boss. What are the pros and cons, in your opinion, of playing your own headline tours versus supporting bigger bands? What do you expect from this tour?
When Ross asked us to join we couldn’t say no to such a legend. We met him at Rock Hard Festival many years ago and we got along great and drank many beers. I always liked to play in Spain cause the spanish people are totally wild. Hopefully there will be a bigger crowd with us and Ross the Boss and an even bigger party after the show. Of course its fun to be headliner and be able to bring more stuff to the stageshows and we’re gonna miss our Bulletcrew but we can start the beerdrinking earlier when we’re not headlining.
SofN: Your music and your image is heavily rooted in the early eighties. What is specially fascinating about that era for you and what do you think we have lost?
I love the early 80’s heavy metal!! Everything sounded and looked better. Nowadays most bands has overdistorted guitars, clicky bassdrums, ugly album covers and ugly haircuts. I think all bands should look like The Ramones.
SofN: Do you like newer brands of heavy metal, or you identify a bit with Ross’s ex-band Manowar and their opinion about what’s true and untrue metal?
Hmmm… well I don’t like «metal» hat has two singers. One sad and one angry and synthesizers in metal. I also like old good death and thrash metal. If it sounds good its true metal to me, simple as that.
SofN: You are heading towards 20 years of career, and Dust to Gold is your seventh album. What would you like to see it has taken you once you are ready to enter the studio to record its follow-up?
Oh, shit! Time flies… I started to play with Hell Hofer in 1996 when we met in school. I think we had a fantastic time during the journey of the band and I hope that we can go on for 20 more years. I think we have become better songwriters during the years. I just hope the band will get a bit bigger for every album and as long as its fun we will continue with the pounding heavy metal!!

Siempre me ha encantado escribir y siempre me ha encantado el rock, el metal y muchos más estilos. De hecho, me gustan tantos estilos y tantas bandas que he llegado a pensar que he perdido completamente el criterio, pero es que hay tanta buena música ahí fuera que es imposible no seguirse sorprendiendo día a día.
