Entrevista a Johan Carlsson, bajista de Sparzanza: ‘Estamos negociando para tocar en los mejores festivales de verano españoles’

Hola Johan, siempre es genial hablar con una de mis bandas favoritas. Sparzanza está actualmente de gira por España en su segunda semana. ¿Cómo va todo?

¡Encantado de hablar contigo! Bueno, ¡la gira va genial! Estamos ansiosos por estos cuatro shows que nos quedan. Me encanta recorrer España. Buen clima, buena gente ¡y buenos conciertos!

Tengo una amiga que asistió a vuestro show en La Coruña. Disfrutó mucho y ahora ya es fan de la banda. Parece que los shows no están muy concurridos, pero las personas que asisten se vuelven fans del grupo. ¡Eso es muy bueno!

Me alegra saber que le gustó, y aunque no fue un concierto con mucha gente, tocamos como de costumbre. Las personas que asisten deberían tener siempre el trato el concierto completo de todos modos. Siempre damos lo mejor de nosotros a base de esfuerzo para ofrecer un buen espectáculo.

La última vez que hablamos me dijiste que en esta gira tocaríais en Barcelona, ​​pero desafortunadamente Sparzanza no viene a mi ciudad. ¿Qué pasa con Barcelona? Tengo amigos realmente interesados ​​en traer Sparzanza aquí, ​​pero me dijeron que el lugar perfecto, el Rocksound, no estaba disponible en estos días. ¿Es esa la razón principal?

En realidad, esto no es algo que podamos controlar. Nos encantaría tocar en Barcelona, ​​pero si no hay un lugar disponible cuando estamos de gira, entonces no hay mucho que podamos hacer al respecto. Lo siento, de verdad que trataremos de venir a Barcelona pronto.

Mi amiga me dijo que en vuestros conciertos los coros son reales, pero hoy en día la mayoría de las bandas usan coros grabados. ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre las bandas que tienen muchas de sus cosas en vivo grabadas (coros, teclados …)?

Tenemos también algunas cosas pregrabadas en pistas de acompañamiento. Pero no en todas las canciones y no tanto en coros y voces. Tratamos de controlarlo un poco y no tener demasiadas pistas de acompañamiento. Tenemos instrumentos de cuerda, algunos efectos, introducciones y algo de material pregrabado. Realmente no me gusta cuando es excesivo, le quita mucho sentimiento a una banda en directo.

He visto que Sparzanza actuó ayer de telonera del 50 aniversario de Nazareth en Gotemburgo. ¿Qué tal con Nazareth? Es una banda histórica pero su primer cantante Dan McAfferty ya no está en el grupo.

Sí, fue un gran espectáculo y con la sala a tope. Y a pesar de que somos mucho más duros, estilísticamente hablando, que Nazareth, tanto a nuestros fanáticos como a los suyos les gustó el programa de esa noche. Obtuvimos un montón de nuevos fans en ese concierto. Y sí, el cantante original ya no está en Nazareth, pero Carl hizo un gran trabajo con su voz. ¡Sonaron geniales!

¿Cuál es la audiencia más grande que ha tenido Sparzanza y dónde?

Creo que debió ser en un festival en Finlandia donde había unas 10000 personas viendo nuestro espectáculo. Eso fue increíble.

En tus últimos conciertos le estás diciendo a la gente que España es un lugar maravilloso para tocar. Estoy seguro de que España es especial para ti porque es la cuarta gira que hacéis por aquí. ¿Crees que es posible tocar en un futuro cercano en algunos de nuestros festivales de verano?

Sí, creo que es posible para nosotros tocar en algunos festivales de verano en España el próximo año. Creo que nuestro agente de contratación está hablando con algunos de ellos en este momento. Veremos que sucede…

Hablando de festivales … ¿En qué Sparzanza ha jugado este último verano, Rusia?

Sí, tocamos en el Big Gun Festival en Rusia, en un lugar que estaba a una hora de Moscú. Todo funcionó de maravilla, asombrado por lo bien que se organizó el festival. Lamentablemente, no tuvimos tiempo de hacer turismo por Rusia, lo cual fue una lástima.

Recientemente me di cuenta de que Sparzanza tiene un club de fans español llamado The Black Cult Spain. ¿Cómo se creó? ¿Tenéis más clubes de fans en Europa?

Tenemos réplicas de The Black Cult en varios países. Los comenzamos nosotros mismos en un principio, construyéndolos a partir de súper-fans. Ahora se ejecutan solos, y son libres para que todo el mundo se una si así lo desea. Puedes encontrar The Black Cult en Facebook si estás interesado.

Personalmente, creo que Announcing the End es uno de los mejores álbumes de los últimos cinco años, pero parece que Sparzanza sigue siendo «el secreto mejor guardado«. ¿Qué crees que necesitáis hacer para crecer y lograr audiencias más grandes?

Gracias, me alegra oírlo. Bueno, todo se trata de giras y promoción. Estamos trabajando para ponernos al día en una gira de apoyo con algunas bandas más grandes y luego hacer festivales de verano.

Announcing the End se publicó en 2017, así que supongo que estáis trabajando en un nuevo disco. Vuestro último álbum fue fantástico, así que … ¿qué podemos esperar?

Sí, estamos trabajando en nuevas canciones. Todavía no estoy seguro de cuándo grabaremos un nuevo disco, en algún momento de 2020, creo. Pero lanzaremos algo de material nuevo antes del álbum. Puedes esperar por lo menos un nuevo single a principios de 2020.

Si tuvieras la oportunidad de invitar a alguien a cantar en tu próximo álbum … ¿A quién llamarías y por qué?

Me encantaría que Fred hiciera un dueto con Corey Taylor de Slipknot /Stone Sour. Tiene una voz increíble y sonaría genial en cualquiera de nuestras canciones.

Definitivamente sigo pensando que Sparzanza podría tener posibilidades fantásticas en Estados Unidos. Firmasteis con una nueva agencia allí, ¿estáis planeando algo en los EEUU?

Todavía no hemos planeado nada para los Estados Unidos. Por ahora sería demasiado costoso para nosotros recorrer el país y tocar, pero algún día lo haremos.

¿Alguna vez habéis tocado por toda Europa de teloneros de una banda más grande? ¿No crees que sería la mejor promoción para una banda como Sparzanza?

La verdad es que no hemos tocado con ninguna banda más grande por Europa, al menos no como una gira de facto. Hemos apoyado a muchas bandas aquí y allí, eso sí. Pero como dices, sería la promoción perfecta para el grupo, ¡así que lo haremos!

Ahora estoy trabajando en dos reportajes especiales y quizás puedas ayudarme con tu opinión… El primero es sobre una banda sueca: Bathory, y la canción «One Rode to Asa Bay». ¿Qué significa Bathory para ti y esta canción en concreto?

Nunca he escuchado a Bathory ni lo más mínimo. No es mi tipo de música, pero recuerdo haber escuchado ese álbum en la tienda de discos cuando era joven. No me gusta. La única «relación» que tengo con Bathory es porque soy un coleccionista de discos, y todo coleccionista de discos sabe que la «cabra amarilla» es una pieza muy rara que se vende por mucho dinero.

Estoy trabajando en otro informe llamado «Canciones perfectas». ¿Podrías decirme tu opinión sobre estas canciones?

“Fairytale of New York” (The Pogues): esta canción suena en la radio y en todas las tiendas por Navidad. De hecho, estoy sorprendido de que se haya convertido en un himno navideño con letras como esta:

Eres un punk (NDA: antes del punk como estilo de música un “punk” era el tipo al que se sodomizaba en la prisión)

“Final Countdown” (Europe):¡Oh, dulces recuerdos de la infancia! Menudo himno en el que se ha convertido, desearía haber escrito esa canción, entonces tendría un coche más caro (risas). Realmente no es la mejor canción de Europe, me gustan más su material anterior a ese disco. Pero poco hay que decir: ese sintetizador es legendario.

Black Rose (Thin Lizzy):Sí, me gustan los Lizzy. Tienen mejores canciones que esta, y no tengo ningún apego real por ello, pero es una gran canción.

Hi Johan, it is great always to talk with one of my favorite bands. Sparzanza are touring now Spain in the second leg of the tour. How everything is going on?

Nice to talk to you! Well, the tour is going great! Looking forward to these 4 remaining shows. Love to tour Spain, nice weather, nice people, good shows!

I have a friend who attended at your show in La Coruña. She enjoyed a lot and now she is fan of the band. It seems that your shows are not crowded but the people who attend there become fan of the band. This is great!

I am glad to hear that she liked it, and even though it was not crowded we played as usual. The people who attend should get the whole deal anyway. We always do our best to deliver a good show.

Last time we talked you told me that in this tour you were able to play in Barcelona, but unfortunately Sparzanza will not play in my city. What happens in Barcelona? I have friends really interested in bring Sparzanza to Barcelona but they told me that the perfect venue, Rocksound, was not available these days. Did It is the main reason?

This is actually not something we can control. We would love to play Barcelona, but if there is no venue available when we are touring, then there is not much we can do about it. Sorry about this, and we will certainly try to come to Barcelona soon.

My friend told me that in your live your choruses are real but nowadays most of the bands use recorded choruses. What is your opinion about the bands that have a lot of their live stuff recorded (choruses, keyboards…)?

We also have a few things pre-recorded on backing tracks. But not in every song and not that much choruses and vocals. We try to keep it down a bit and not have too much backing tracks. We have strings, some effects, intros and stuff pre-recorded. I really don’t like it when it is too much, it takes away a lot of the feeling of a live-band then.

I have seen that Sparzanza supported Nazareth’s 50 anniversary in Gotheborg yesterday. How did it work? Nazareth is an historical band but his first singer (McAuffey) is not in the line up.

Yeah this was a great show. Crowded. And even though we are pretty much harder than Nazareth both our and their fans seemed to like our show a lot. We got a bunch of new fans at this show. No, the original singer is not in Nazareth anymore, but Carl did a great job on vocals. They sounded great!

Which is the biggest audience that Sparzanza has had and where?

I think it must be at a festival in Finland where about 10000 people saw our show. That was amazing.

In your last concerts you are telling to the people that Spain is a wonderful place to play. I am sure that Spain is special for you because it is the fourth tour in our country. Do you think is possible to play in a near future in some of our summer festivals?

Yes, I think it is possible for us to play some summer festivals in Spain next year. I believe our booking agent is talking to some of them right now. We will see what happens.

Talking about festivals… In which Sparzanza has played this last summer, Russia?

Yeah, we played the Big Gun Festival in Russia, in a place about one hour outside of Moscow. It was really good, amazed by how good the festival was organized. We unfortunately did not have the time to see much of Russia, which was too bad.

Recently I realized that Sparzanza has a Spanish fan club called The Black Cult Spain. How it was created? Do you have more fan clubs around Europe?

We have chapters of The Black Cult in several countries. We started them out ourselves in the beginning, building them up from super-fans. Now they kind of run themselves, and they are free for everyone to join if you want to. You can find The Black Cult on Facebook if you are interested.

Personally, I think that Announcing the End is one of the best albums I listened to in the last five years but It seems that Sparzanza still being “a secret to be revealed”. What do you think you need to do to grow up and to achieve bigger audiences?

Thanks, I am glad to hear. Well it is all about touring and promotion. We are working on getting our asses on a support tour with some bigger bands, and do festivals in the summer.

Announcing the End was issued in 2017 so I suppose you are working in a new album. Are you working now in some stuff? Your last album was fantastic so… what can we expect?

Yes, we are working on new songs. Not sure yet when we will record a new album, sometime in 2020 I believe. But we will release some new music before the album. You can expect at least a new single in the beginning of 2020.

If you had the chance to invite somebody to play-sing in your next album… Who do you should call and why?

I would love for Fred to do a duet with Corey Taylor from Slipknot / Stone Sour. He has got an amazing voice and would sound great on one of our songs.

Definitely I’m still thinking that Sparzanza could have fantastic chances in USA. You signed with a new management there so, are you planning something there?

We actually have not planned anything for the US yet. As of right now it would be too expensive for us to tour there, but some day we will.

Have you ever toured Europe supporting a bigger band. Does it would be the best promotion for a band like Sparzanza?

We have actually not supported any bigger bands in Europe, at least not as a tour. We have supported a lot of bands here and there. But as you say it would be the perfect promotion for the band, so we will do it!

Now I’m working in two special reports and maybe you can help me telling me your opinion… The first one is about a Swedish band: Bathory, and the song “One Rode to Asa Bay”. What means Bathory for you and this song?

I have never really listened to Bathory at all. Not my kind of music, but I remember listening to that album at the record store when I was young. I did not like it. The only “relation” I have for Bathory is because I am a record collector, and every record collector knows that the “Yellow goat” is a very rare piece that sells for a lot of money.

I am working in other report called “Perfect songs”. Could you tell me your opinion about these songs?

Fairytale of New York (The Pogues): That song is playing on the radio and in like every store on Christmas. I am actually amazed that it has become such a Christmas hymn with lyrics like this:

Final Countdown (Europe): Oh, sweet childhood memories. What an anthem that has become, I wish I wrote that song – then I would have a better car, ha ha ha. Not really the best Europe song – I like the earlier stuff more. But you can’t say anything – that synth-riff is legendary.

Black Rose (Thin Lizzy): yeah I like Lizzy. They have better songs than this one, and I have no real attachement to it, but it is a great song.
