Entrevista a Johannes Eckerström, vocalista de Avatar: ‘El tiempo corre de manera diferente en Avatar Country, ya que es una nación de metal y, por lo tanto, se basa en el poder del sonido’

Aprovechando que se dejaron caer por aquí hace unos días, nos adentramos en su Reino para charlar con Johannes Eckerström, vocalista de Avatar, sobre reyes sin corona, reyes que, en realidad, no lo son… y sobre ese espacio interdimensional llamado Avatar Country (2018). ¡Pasen y vean!

SofN: ¡Hola, Johannes! Antes que nada, muchas gracias por tomarte el tiempo de responder algunas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Cómo te va?

Mis disculpas por la responder tan tarde. Encontrar tiempo para sentarse con una entrevista por correo electrónico en una gira no es algo fácil de hacer. Estoy bien, gracias. Estamos quemando Europa a un ritmo rápido y violento. El amor mostrado hacia el Rey ha sido alucinante.

SofN: Bueno, bueno. ¿Por qué has tardado tanto en contarnos sobre tu país?

Simplemente tuvimos que esperar que el tiempo fuera el correcto, para que la gente de la Tierra pudiera manejar la intensa dicha de conocer y amar a nuestro Rey.

SofN: ¿Quién es quién en esta Corte? Jonas es obviamente el amado Rey (e innegablemente se parece a uno, uno bastante loco, en mi opinión), al que dedicas cada canción, eres como una especie de portavoz. ¿Quiénes son tus otros compañeros de banda? ¿Qué otros personajes podemos encontrar en tu país?

No somos más que unos humildes servidores de Avatar Country y de su Glorioso Señor y Maestro. Los títulos cambian según la tarea que nos llegue. Estoy profundamente involucrado con la mayoría de los departamentos, cámaras y ramas del gobierno, y también lo están los otros.

SofN: En España estamos bastante cabreados con el Gobierno, la Realeza y todo lo que les rodea. ¿Os importaría invadirnos y tomar el control? ¿Qué beneficios tendríamos siendo ciudadanos de Avatar Country? Al menos, supongo que tendríamos menos flamenco y más rock’n’roll…

El flamenco es increíble y la guitarra española, en general, es una fuente de inspiración muy importante para lo que se ha convertido en metal. No menospreciemos eso. Si alguna vez has jugado a Civilization, estás familiarizado con el término «victoria cultural», que es cuando los estados de la ciudad del oponente son asimilados por voluntad propia debido al ejemplo que estableces. Es la ruta pacífica hacia la dominación mundial, y es el único método que le interesa a nuestro Rey. Él no tiene un ejército construido para invadir. Solo nos defendemos. No importa cómo te sientas en España en este momento, ya que en Avatar Country te queremos profundamente y deseamos lo mejor para ti.

SofN: Leí que tu Rey tiene, al menos, unos pocos miles de años, y sigue tan fresco y guapo porque tiene el metal líquido fluye por sus venas. ¿Puedes desarrollar esta historia un poco más para nuestros lectores? ¿Nació así? ¿Tuvo algún tipo de transfusión de sangre en algún momento? ¿Puede derretirse y remodelarse como el malo de Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)? ¡Queremos saber!

La mayor parte de la historia del Rey está envuelta en un aura de misterio. El tiempo corre de manera diferente en Avatar Country, ya que es una nación de metal y, por lo tanto, se basa en el poder del sonido. Las leyes del tiempo y la física se doblan constantemente. Quizá sería más exacto decir que el Rey no tiene edad ya que el sonido de su guitarra es intemporal.

SofN: Hace apenas un mes que se lanzó Avatar Country (2018), aunque ya en noviembre pudimos escuchar las primeras canciones y conocer su concepto. ¿Qué tan buena crees que ha sido la recepción hasta el momento? ¿Los fanáticos y los medios se han inclinado ante el Rey o has visto a alguien partir hacia la Resistencia?

A mi entender, ha sido completamente aceptado por todos nuestros ciudadanos. Incluso mucho antes de este lanzamiento en particular, dejamos bien claro a todos los que nos han seguido que estamos cambiando y siempre nos esforzamos por sorprendernos incluso a nosotros mismos y, por lo tanto, a nuestros oyentes. La gente ya estaba lista para sorprenderse.

SofN: ¿Seguirás contándonos acerca de tu Reino en lanzamientos futuros o, como podría esperarse, os convertiréis en personajes de una historia diferente y completamente nueva?

Avatar es siempre cambiante. El tiempo dirá a dónde debemos ir después.

SofN: Avatar Country (2018) es un álbum, como ya nos habéis acostumbrado, con muchos cambios de ritmo y una mezcla de voces claras y guturales, pero también notamos una evolución en el sonido. ¿Qué nos puedes decir sobre esta evolución hacia un sonido algo más ligero?

A medida que pasamos de crear una obra de ficción sobre el miedo, la pérdida, la oscuridad y la muerte, a decir la verdad a través de relatos sobre el coraje, la victoria, la luz y la vida, la música tuvo que seguir el concepto y el mensaje. Esto es, probablemente, tan brillante y positivo como alguna vez oirás en Avatar.

SofN: ¿Qué canciones en Avatar Country (2018) crees que podrían convertirse en clásicos en los futuros setlists de la banda?

Realmente, no lo sé. Todas han ido bien hasta ahora, aunque solo tocamos «King After King» una vez, pero fue genial. Es demasiado pronto para decirlo. En este punto, la única canción que no hemos tocado es «Prey The Sun Away» de Feathers & Flesh (In His Own Words) (2017), y todas han sonado fantásticas en directo. Me resulta difícil especular, porque no importa cuál sea el caso y cuál sea el resultado final, pues solo trabajamos con canciones que pretendemos que sean las mejores.

SofN: Con más de quince años de carrera en vuestro haber y siete álbumes publicados, parece que el éxito ops ha llegado más recientemente (de hecho, el pasado año obtuvisteis el premio «Up and Coming» concedido por la revista Metal Hammer). ¿Por qué crees que floreciste tan tarde y qué sucedió, bajo tu punto de vista, que os hizo florecer justo ahora?

Creo que es la suma de muchas cosas. Empezamos muy jóvenes y hemos permanecido juntos desde entonces, a excepción de Tim que se unió un poco más tarde. Nuestro primer lanzamiento llegó temprano y hemos estado aprendiendo y creciendo con una luz sobre nosotros. Nuestro crecimiento artístico ha alcanzado un punto en el que, simplemente, no podemos ser ignorados. A lo largo del camino, hemos empezado a trabajar con las personas adecuadas en muchos lugares y todo, incluso las cosas aburridas que ocurren detrás del escenario, funcionan más fluidas que nunca.

SofN: No estoy seguro de si estoy en lo cierto, pero creo que eres más popular en los Estados Unidos que en Europa, como podemos ver por el volumen de entradas vendidas en vuestra reciente gira. ¿Por qué crees que es eso? ¿Crees que vuestro sonido y música se adaptan mejor al público estadounidense? ¿Habéis hecho más promoción allí que aquí?

No creo que tenga mucho que ver con la música o con el público en realidad. Creo que ciertas oportunidades se alinearon de manera óptima en los Estados Unidos desde el principio. Tuvimos gente asegurándose de que los tours fueran por el buen camino. Nos tomó más tiempo tener una configuración constructiva en Europa. Ahora vemos el efecto de que cambie aquí también. Europa Occidental realmente está cambiando, y Europa Central y del Sur no se quedan atrás. También estamos trabajando en el Norte y Este.

SofN: Pronto iniciareis una gira europea, que os llevará a España por primera vez como cabezas de cartel. No venís muy a menudo, y últimamente solo recuerdo la gira con Avenged Sevenfold y Five Finger Death Punch, hace unos años, y vuestra visita al Download Festival en Madrid el verano pasado. Cuando eras menos conocidos, también participaste en bandas tan diferentes como Evergrey, Hardcore Superstar o Obituary, que demuestran tu versatilidad y la evolución de tu música. ¿Qué recuerdas de tus shows anteriores en España? ¿Te veremos más a menudo de ahora en adelante?

¡Sí! Vendremos más regularmente a partir de ahora. Todo vuelve a lo que dije acerca de aburrirnos detrás del escenario. Ahora tenemos un gran promotor que cree en lo que estamos haciendo, y se nota. Esto me hace muy feliz ya que cada show en España ha sido muy memorable para nosotros. Recuerdo que la interacción con los fans en la gira de Avenged Sevenfold fue un poco abrumadora y nuestro tour manager en aquel momento dio en el clavo cuando describió a los españoles como de sangre caliente a la que un norteño como yo no está acostumbrado. Esa sangre tan cálida crea bellas interacciones y sorprendentes espectáculos que incendian a la banda. En mi experiencia, eres muy generoso como persona y se traduce en cómo actúas como público. Es genial.

SofN: Vendrás con Hellzapoppin, una banda bastante única que acompaña la interpretación de varias canciones con un espectáculo de circo. ¿has tenido algo que ver? ¿Cómo comenzó el vínculo entre Avatar y el mundo del circo? ¿Qué crees que podemos esperar de este combo?

Hemos sido amigos por años. Su líder, Bryce, aparece en el video de «Black Waltz» y hemos querido hacer algo así desde hace mucho tiempo. Muchas cosas cambiaron en el mundo de Avatar cuando nos conocimos… para mejor. Ellos aportan una energía muy específica al combo.

SofN: En una entrevista que concediste hace poco, leemos que tienes algunos rituales antes de subir al escenario. ¿Podrías contarnos un poco sobre ellos? ¿Cuánto tiempo te toma prepararte para subir al escenario?

Creo que respondí que no tengo ningún ritual real antes de los shows. Vestirse y calentar se convierte en el ritual. A veces necesitamos algunas canciones adicionales de Manowar para ponernos de humor, pero varía de un show a otro.

SofN: Si tuvieras que elegir una sola canción de Avatar que crees que contiene la esencia de la banda más que cualquier otra y que sería ideal para dara conocer la banda a alguien que no está familiarizado con tu música, ¿cuál sería?

No tengo idea…

SofN: Si pudieras organizar una gira con cuatro bandas, siendo el Avatar una de ellas, ¿cuáles elegirías y por qué?

«Realísticamente» hablando… Imonolith, Gojira y Judas Priest.

SofN: Hello Johannes! First of all, thank you very much for taking the time to answer some questions for Science of Noise. How are you going these days?

My apologies for the late response. Finding time to sit down with an email interview on tour is not an easy thing to do. I am doing well, thank you. We are burning through Europe at a violent rate and rapid pace. The love shown for the King has been mind blowing.

SofN: Well well well, why did you take so long to tell us about your country?

We simply had to wait for the time to be right, for the people of Earth to be able to handle the intense bliss of knowing and loving our King.

SofN: Who is who in this Royal Court? Jonas is obviously the beloved King (and he undeniably looks like one, a pretty crazy one in my opinion), which you dedicate every song to, you are like some kind of spokesperson… who are your other bandmates? What other characters can we find in the country?

We are all but humble servants of Avatar Country and it’s Glorious Lord and Master. Titles change with whatever task that comes to us. I am deeply involved with most departments, chambers and branches of government. So are the others.

SofN: In Spain we are pretty pissed with the government, the royalty and everything related to all of it. Could you actually try to invade us and take over? What benefits would the citizens of Avatar Country have? At least, I guess we would have less flamenco and more rock’n’roll…

Flamenco is fucking awesome and Spanish guitar playing in general is a very important source of inspiration for what has become metal. Let’s not belittle that. If you ever played Civilization you’re familiar with the term «cultural victory», which is when opponent’s city states assimilate to you by free will because of the example you set. It’s the peaceful route to world domination, and it’s the only method that interest’s our King. he does not have an army built to invade. We only defend. No matter how you happen to feel about Spain at the moment, we in Avatar Country love all of you deeply and wish only the best for you.

SofN: I read that your King is, at least, a few thousand years old, and he remains so fresh and good looking because he has liquid metal in his veins. Can you develop this story a bit more for our readers? Was he born like that? Did he have some sort of blood transfusion at some stage? Can he melt and reshape like the bad guy in Terminator 2? We want to know!

Most of the history of the King is shrouded in mystery. Time runs differently in Avatar Country, as it’s a Metal Nation and thus is built upon the power of sound. Laws of time and physics get bent constantly. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that the King is ageless as the sound from his guitar is timeless.

SofN: It’s just about a month since you released Avatar Country (2018), although already in November we could hear the first songs and know about its concept. How do you feel the reception has been so far? Have the fans and the media bowed to the King or you have had some people moving over to the Resistance?

It has to my knowledge been embraced fully by all our Citizens. Even long before this particular release we have made it clear to all who have followed us that we are ever changing and always strive to surprise ourselves and therefore our listeners. People were ready to be surprised.

SofN: Will you keep telling us about your kingdom in future releases or, as I might expect, you will become characters of a whole new different story?

Avatar is ever-changing. Time will tell where we need to go next.

SofN: Avatar Country is an album, as you already have us used to, with many changes of rhythm and a mix of clear and screaming voices, but we also notice an evolution in the sound. What can you tell us about this evolution towards a somehow lighter sound?

As we went from creating a piece of fiction about fear, loss, darkness and death to speaking the truth alongside tales of courage, victory, light and life, the music had to follow accordingly to the concept and message. This is probably as bright and positive as you will ever hear Avatar.

SofN: What songs in Avatar Country (2018) you think might become classics in the band’s future setlists?

I really don’t know. The have all gone over well this far. Although we only played «King After King» once, but it was great. It’s just too early to say. At this point the only song haven’t played is «Pray The Sun Away», and all of them have been great live. I find it hard to speculate, because no matter what the case might be and what the end result is we only work with songs we intend to be our best ever.

SofN: With more than fifteen years of career under your belt and seven albums published, it feels that you are just a recent success (in fact, you just got a “Up and Coming” award last year from Metal Hammer). Why do you think you bloomed so late and what has happened, under your point of view, that made you bloom just now?

I believe it’s the sum of many things. We started very young and have remained together ever since, except for Tim joining a bit later. Our first release came early and we have been learning and growing with a spot light on us. Our artistic growth has reached a point where we simply can’t be ignored. Along the way we have started to work with the right people in many places and all the boring behind the scenes business stuff is running smoother than ever.

SofN: I am not sure if I am right, but I feel that you are more popular in the States than in Europe, as we can see for the many sold outs on your recent tour. Why do you think is that? Do you think your sound and your music suits American audiences better? Have you done heavier promotion there than here?

I don’t think it has much to do with the music or the audience actually. I believe certain opportunities were lined up in an optimal way in the States from the get go. We had people making sure that tours were followed up properly. It took longer to have a constructive set up in Europe. We now see the effect of it turning around here as well. Western Europe is really turning around and Central and Southern Europe is not far behind. We’re working on North and East as well.

SofN: Soon you will start the European tour, which will bring you to Spain for the first time as a headliner. You don’t come very often, and lately I just recall the tour with Avenged Sevenfold and Five Finger Death Punch a few years ago and your visit to the Download Festival in Madrid last summer. When you were less known you came also opening for such different bands as Evergrey, Hardcore Superstar or Obituary, which comes to show your versatility and the evolution of your music. What do you remember about your previous shows in Spain? Will we see you more often from now on?

Yes! We will come more regularly from now on. It all comes back to what I said about boring behind the scenes business. We now have a great promotor who believes in what we are doing and it shows. This makes me very happy as every show in Spain has been very memorable for us. I remember some fan interaction on the Avenged Sevenfold tour being a bit overwhelming and our tour manager at the time would hit the nail on the head when describing the Spanish as more warm blooded that a Northerner like myself would be used to. That warm blood makes for beautiful interaction and amazing shows that sets the band on fire. In my experience you are very giving as people and it translate to how you act as an audience. It’s great.

SofN: You will be coming with Hellzapoppin, a quite unique band that accompanies the interpretation of several songs with a circus show. Did you have a say on them coming with you? How did the link between Avatar and the circus world begin? What do you think we can expect from this combo?

We have been friends for years. The leader Bryce is in the «Black Waltz» video and we’ve been wanting to do something like this forever. Many things changed in the world in Avatar when we met, for the better. They bring a very specific energy to the package.

SofN: In an interview that you did lately we read that you have some rituals before going on stage. Could you tell us a bit about them? How long does it take you to get ready to go on stage?

I think I answered that I don’t have any real rituals before the shows. Getting dressed and warming up becomes the ritual. Sometimes we need a few extra Manowar songs to get in the mood, but it varies from show to show.

SofN: If you had to choose a single song from Avatar that you think it contains the essence of the band more than any other and would be ideal to introduce you to somebody that is not familiar with your music, which one would it be?

I have no idea.

SofN: If you could put up a tour with four bands, being Avatar one of them, which ones would you choose and why?

«Realistically»… Imonolith, Gojira and Judas Priest.
