Entrevista a Kostas Papadimitriou-Papadopoulos, guitarrista de Northwind: ‘El heavy metal en Grecia está mejor que nunca, con bandas y festivales relmente grandes’

¡Felicidades! History es un disco excelente. Me encanta el heavy metal clásico y llevaba ya muchas críticas seguidas de otros estilos, por lo que escuchar otra vez algo del estilo es algo que sienta fenomenal. History está en las tiendas, así que… ¿estás contento con las opiniones de la prensa y de los fans?

Gracias por su interés y por sus bonitas palabras. Estamos más que felices con todos estos excelentes mensajes que recibimos de nuestros seguidores. La respuesta mundial ha sido realmente asombrosa. También tenemos críticas de la prensa y hasta ahora… muy buenas y positivas.

Mi favorita es «King Alexander the Third». Es una canción épica con un gran estribillo ampuloso sobre Alejandro Magno. ¿Crees que, probablemente, es la mejor canción que has escrito?

Sabemos que es una canción poderosa, pero es muy difícil para mí elegir un único tema y decir que esta es nuestra mejor canción. Creo que nuestros tres álbumes tienen todos muy buenas canciones, pero puedo decirte, con seguridad, que es una de nuestras mejores canciones y eso lo vemos en nuestros shows en vivo, realmente disfruto cuando la tocamos.

Toca hablar un poco de las portadas, que como veremos siempre han sido “interesantes” en vuestros discos. Dime quién es el hombre de la portada: ¿Es Prometeo con su fuego? Los perros significan fidelidad-fidelidad (supongo). ¿Quién fue el pintor?

Es Diógenes el filósofo cínico al que se refiere también con el nombre de El perro (título de la última canción del álbum). Fue el principal representante de la filosofía cínica y fue una de las personalidades más controvertidas de la antigua Grecia. Su estilo de vida económico y su punto de vista crítico fueron las razones por las que lo llamaron así. Entonces no es Prometeo. La pintura fue realizada por Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904) y está en el Museo de Arte Walters en Baltimore.

Panos Jx-f es su vuestro último fichaje para la banda. ¿Es la primera vez que la banda necesita un teclado en su música-estilo?

Siempre quisimos tener un teclista permanente, pero fue muy difícil encontrar a alguien sin más proyectos y obligaciones. Afortunadamente, Panos estaba disponible y funcionó perfectamente desde el primer día con el resto de la banda. Desde el disco Mythology que los teclados se convirtieron en parte de nuestro sonido, así que no es la primera vez.

Hay muchas buenas bandas en Grecia, pero no son especialmente conocidas en España. También hay muchas agrupaciones de metal clásico en vuestras tierras y excelentes festivales. Cuéntanos un poco cómo es la escena griega del metal actualmente.

Está mejor que nunca, con bandas muy grandes y muy buenos festivales muy bien organizados. Algunos de ellos ya son reconocidos internacionalmente y festivales como UTH están reuniendo personas de todo el mundo que apoyan a nuestras bandas locales al mismo tiempo. Supongo que también hay buenas bandas en España que nunca escuchamos aquí en Grecia, sucede lo mismo en todas partes.

En 2018, Northwind tocó en Bélgica. ¿Fue un primer paso jugar en Europa y habrá más después de la edición de History?

En realidad, nunca tocamos en Bélgica ni en ningún otro lugar de Europa. Pero si conoces a alguien que esté dispuesto a invitarnos, tenemos los pasaportes listos en nuestros bolsillos (risas).

Vuestro primer álbum Northcomin’ de 1983 es un clásico y tiene una portada icónica. ¿Os influyó mucho NWOBHM?

Tal vez un poco porque era el nuevo sonido en aquel entonces. Somos unos chicos muy clásicos amantes del sonido de los años 60 y 70, pero la NWOBHM fue una revolución musical y finalmente se mezcló con nuestro sonido, especialmente en el álbum Mythology.

En Mythology comenzasteis a inspiraros sobre los mitos griegos: Troya, Aquiles, Medea, Prometeo… ¿Alguna vez has pensado en la posibilidad de crear una ópera rock sobre una historia antigua sobre las historias clásicas griegas? Symphony X lo hizo ya en Odissey.

E hicieron un trabajo increíble. A decir verdad, nunca tuvimos tales pensamientos y creo que no es tan fácil hacer algo como esto. Quién sabe, tal vez tu idea será nuestro próximo desafío (risas).

¿Por qué elegisteis un pterodáctilo en la portada de un álbum en el que los antiguos mitos griegos eran el tema principal?

Esto es algo que realmente quiero olvidar (risas). Teníamos la fecha límite para el lanzamiento del álbum, pero no teníamos la portada. No quedaba tiempo para buscar y elegir una y a los pocos días llegó la discográfica con esta. Desafortunadamente era demasiado tarde para cambiarla. Podríamos haber tenido una portada más coherente con el concepto del álbum, pero después de 33 años… considero que es muy reconocible.

¿Por qué la banda se separó después del segundo álbum Mythologyen 1987?

Después de la grabación y nuestro show de presentación nos mudamos a Londres con un buen trato buscando dar nuestro próximo gran paso. Grabamos cuatro canciones en los famosos estudios Metropolis y toda la situación parecía muy prometedora para el grupo. Finalmente, las cosas no funcionaron como hubiésemos querido. Una historia triste que pertenece ya al pasado.

¿Qué hicieron los miembros de la banda con el parón que va desde 1987 hasta 2020? ¿Algo relacionado en la escena musical?

Soy ingeniero de sonido, así que empecé a trabajar en conciertos y festivales en vivo nuevamente, Theodoros Doulamis continuó tocando música en Grecia y Thanasis Tsimoudis era baterista de estudio, así que podemos decir que nunca nos alejamos de la escena musical. También hicimos algunos shows en vivo como Northwind de vez en cuando teloneando a algunas grandes bandas como Blue Öyster Cult, The Yardbirds, Diamond Head, etc…

Debido a la crisis del coronavirus hay un obligado parón. ¿Teníais algunos planes en directo después la edición de History? ¿Tal vez algunos festivales de metal este verano?

Lo primero que tocaba eran nuestros shows de presentación en Salónica y Atenas. También habíamos aceptado algunos festivales y quizás una mini gira por Grecia para promocionar el nuevo disco. Ahora tenemos que esperar como todos los demás.

¿Sabías que en España había una banda de power metal llamada Nörthwind? Creo que también tuviste algunos problemas con el nombre del grupo en el pasado (¿Lizard era el nombre?).

¿De verdad? Nunca he oído hablar de ellos, lo siento muchachos. No, nunca tuvimos tales problemas. Theodoros y yo somos los fundadores de la banda en 1981 y desde que obtuvimos el contrato de nuestro primer álbum ya nadie podía reclamar los derechos del nombre.

Una de mis bandas favoritas es Virgin Steele y generalmente tienen letras basadas en los antiguos griegos. ¿Te gustan las partes I y II del House of Atreus de Virgin Steele?

No son mis discos favoritos del grupo, pero son una gran banda. David DeFeis es uno de los mejores vocalistas de todos los tiempos en el heavy metal. Es un cantante muy apasionado y tienen una gran base de seguidores aquí en Grecia. Prefiero obras como Noble Savage y los The Marriage of Heaven and Hell I-II más que los que has mencionado, pero también son excelentes álbumes con muchas canciones geniales.

Sois de Salónica. Cuando era un niño en los años ochenta el baloncesto era mi vida y recuerdo especialmente a mi equipo de la ciudad, el Barcelona, jugando contra el Aris de Salónica y un súper jugador llamado Nicos Gallis. Cuando (entrevisté a Gus G. hace un año y me dijo que también amaba a Gallis y el baloncesto en esos tiempos) ¡Estáis escribiendo sobre héroes griegos antiguos, pero Nicos también es un héroe! ¿Sería posible escribir sobre un héroe moderno como un jugador de basquet?

Creo que no lo haría, no es mi estilo. Definitivamente Gallis es un héroe moderno y gracias a él hemos vivido muy buenos momentos en los años 80. Este tipo es nuestro Michael Jordan, no solo para los seguidores de Aris, sino para todos los hinchas del baloncesto, sin importar el equipo que apoyen. Es un hombre muy respetado no solo por sus habilidades de baloncesto sino también por su forma de ser. ¿Qué puedo decir… es una pregunta muy difícil, nunca digas nunca?

Actualmente estoy trabajando en un reportaje especial sobre canciones perfectas y sería muy interesante saber tu opinión sobre estas composiciones (perfectas):

«Shine on You Crazy Diamond» (Pink Floyd):

Cómo suena esa guitarra amigo mío… me da escalofríos cada vez que escucho esta canción. Pura magia.

«Free Bird» (Lynyrd Skynyrd):

El solo de guitarra triple al final de la canción es una absoluta una locura. Me encanta esta banda, han escrito muchas canciones geniales, pero esta es definitivamente la que mejor les define.

«Hail and Kill» (Manowar):

Épico, épico, épico… cuando Eric Adams grita después del solo y llega el último verso crees que estás en el campo de batalla, con la espada en alto y estás listo para matarlos a todos. Una canción clásica de heavy metal de todos los tiempos.

Congratulations! History is an excellent album. I love classic heavy metal, so, it is wonderful to listen to classic heavy metal again! History is out now so, are you happy with press and fan opinions?

Thank you for your interest and for your great words. We are more than happy with all these great messages we get from the fans. The world response is really amazing. We also have many great reviews from the press and. So far so good.

My favorite one is “King Alexander the Third”. It is an epic song with strong chorus about Alexander the Great. Do you think that, probably, it is the best song you have written?

We do know that it is a powerful song but it’s really hard for me to choose a song and say that this is our best song ever. I think all our three albums have very good songs but I can tell you for sure that it is one of our best song in our live shows, I really enjoy it when we play it.

Please, tell me who is the man in the front cover: Does he is Prometheus with his fire? Dogs mean allegiance-faithfulness (I suppose). Who was the painter?

It’s Diogenes the Cynic philosopher also refers as The Dog (the last song of the album). He was the main representative of cynical philosophyand one of the most controversial personalities in ancient Greece. His thrifty way of life and his critical point of view for the rest of the word were the reasons why they called him so. So, it’s not Prometheus. The painting was created by Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904) and it’s in Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.

Panos Jx-f is your latest hiring for the band. Does it is the first time the band need keyboard in his music?

We always wanted to have a permanent keyboard player but it was very difficult to find someone without further obligations. Fortunately, Panos was available and he matched perfectly from day one with the rest of us. Since Mythology album keyboards became part of our sound so it’s not the first time.

There are so many good bands in Greece but are not especially known in Spain. There are a lot of true metal-classic metal bands in your country and excellent festivals. Tell us please how is the Greek metal scene currently.

Better than ever, with so many great bands and very good organized festivals. Some of them are already internationally recognized and festivals like UTH are gathering people from all around the world supporting the local bands at the same time. I guess there are also good bands in Spain that we never heard of them here in Greece, it’s the same everywhere.

In 2018 Northwind played in Belgium. Did it was a first step to play around Europe after the issue of History?

Actually, we never played in Belgium or elsewhere in Europe, ever. But if you know someone who’s willing to invite us we got the passports ready in our pockets hahahaha.

Your first album Northcomin’is a classic and has an iconic front cover. Did you were very influenced by NWOBHM?

Maybe a little bit because it was the new sound back then. We are the classical 60’s and 70’s guys but NWOBHM was a musical revolution and eventually it blended into our sound especially in Mythology album.

In Mythology you started to talk about Greek myths: Troy, Achilles, Medea, Prometheus… Have you ever thought about the possibility to create a rock opera about an ancient story about Greek myths? Symphony X did it in Odyssey.

And they did an amazing job. To tell you the truth we never had such thoughts and I think it’s not that easy to do something like this. Who knows, maybe your idea will be our next challenge hahahaha.

Why did you choose a pterodactyl in the front cover in an album that the ancient Greek myths was the main topic?

This is something that I really want to forget hahahaha. We had the deadline for the album release but we didn’t have the cover. Our label back in the days came with this one and unfortunately it was too late to change it. We could have a cover more relevant with the album concept but after 33 years it’s very recognizable.

Why did the band split up after his second album in 1987?

After the recordings and our release show we moved in to London with a great deal looking for our next big step. We recorded four songs at the famous Metropolis studios and the whole situation seemed very promising for the band. Finally, things didn’t work out the way we wanted to. A sad story that belongs to the past.

What the members of the band did from 1987 until 2020? Something related in the music scene?

I am a sound engineer so I started working in live stages and festivals again, Theodoros Doulamis continued playing music all around Greece and Thanasis Tsimoudis was a session drummer so you can say that we’ve never left from the music scene. We did also a few live shows as Northwind from time to time supporting some great bands like Blue Öyster Cult, The Yardbirds, Diamond Head etc…

Due coronavirus crisis every band had to stop. Did you have some live plans after History issue? Maybe some metal festivals this summer?

First of all we were waiting for our release shows in Thessaloniki and Athens. We had also booked a few festivals and maybe a mini tour around Greece to promote the new album. Now we have to wait like everybody else.

Did you know that in Spain there was a power metal band called Nörthwind? I think that you had got some trouble with your band’s name too in the past (Lizard was the name?).

Really? Never heard of them, sorry guys. No, we never had such troubles. Me and Theodoros are the founders of the band back in 1981 and since we had the contract of our first album no one could claim the rights for the name.

One of my favorite bands is Virgin Steele and they usually have lyrics based in the ancient Greeks. Do you like House of Atreus parts I and IIfrom Virgin Steele?

Not one of my favorites but surely a great band. David is one of the best vocalists of all times in heavy metal. Such a passionate singer and they have a huge fan base here in Greece. I prefer Noble Savage and The Marriage of Heaven and Hell I-II more than these two but they are also great albums with many great songs.

Your band is from Thessaloniki. When I was a kid in the eighties, basketball was my life and I specially remember my city team Barcelona playing against Aris Salonica and a superplayer called Nicos Gallis. When (I interviewed Gus G a year ago and he told me that he loved Gallis too) You are writing about ancient Greek heroes but Nicos is a hero too! Does it would be possible to write about a modern hero like a basketball player?

I don’t think I would, it’s not my style. Definitely Gallis is a modern hero and thank to him we have lived so many great moments back in the 80’s. This guy is our Michael Jordan, not for the Aris fans only but for every basketball fan no matter what team you support. He is a very respected man not only for his basketball skills but also for his character. What can I say it’s a difficult question, never say never?

“Shine on You Crazy Diamond” (Pink Floyd):

This guitar sound, my friend, it brings me chills every time I listen to this song. Pure magic.

“Free Bird” (Lynyrd Skynyrd):

The triple guitar solo in the end of the song is absolutely insane. I love this band, they have written so many great songs but this one’s definitely their trademark.

“Hail and Kill” (Manowar):

Epic, epic, epic… when Eric Adams screams after the solo and goes to the last verse you thing you’re in the battlefield, holding your sword high and you are ready to kill everyone. All time classic heavy metal song.
