Muchos de nosotros hemos relacionado el fumar marihuana con un cierto apalancamiento, pero este no es el caso de nuestro protagonista de hoy. El señor Landphil se las apaña para repartir su tiempo entre Municipal Waste, Iron Reagan y Cannabis Corpse. Los primeros nos visitaron hace poco y lo dejaron todo del revés, y ahora le toca el turno a los adoradores del cogollo por excelecncia, que vendrán a presentarnos su excelente Left Hand Pass la semana que viene. Nos ponemos un poco en situación de lo que nos viene encima con esta charla.
Bienvenidos a Science of Noise. Es un honor poder entrevistar a un grupo que admiro desde hace unos cuantos años y me encanta vuestra música. ¿Cómo va todo?
¡Hola! Aquí Landphil, ¡todo va genial! Actualmente estoy de gira con Municipal Waste teloneando a Exodus. El tour está esponsorizado por un dibujo animado de Adult Swim llamado “Mr. Pickles”. ¡Cada show ha estado escandalosamente lleno y divertido!
Vuestro último disco es una vuelta de tuerca de vuestro ya característico estilo con influencias bastante variadas, ¿cómo enfocáis la composición de un nuevo disco?
El nuevo álbum incluye al guitarrista Ray Suhy, se ha incorporado su estilo lo máximo posible al nuevo álbum. Le dimos completa libertad para ir en la dirección que él quisiera. Creo que ha dado pié a un álbum de Cannabis Corpse muy diferente.
Al investigar un poco vuestra discografía hay un dato bastante curioso y es que no habéis tenido nunca el mismo guitarrista principal para la grabación de cada uno de vuestros discos. ¿A qué se debe esta circunstancia?
Eso no es del todo correcto, yo he tocado la guitarra rítmica en todos los álbumes hasta “Left Hand Pass”. Cannabis Corpse tenía a Nick Poulos tocando la guitarra en vivo y los solos en los 4 primeros álbumes, luego fue un colaborador en los dos siguientes, después de que se uniese Ray Suhy pensé que ayudaría a refrescar un poco la cosa dándole a Ray la antorcha en el departamento de guitarra,
Es la primera vez que visitáis España y para nosotros es todo un honor teneros por aquí, ¿qué expectativas tenéis de cara a esta gira por el viejo continente?
Esta no es nuestra primera gira por Europa, pero si por España. Hemos hecho giras europeas una de ellas con GHOUL, es genial poder tocar para metaleros ahí. Sientes que el metal se aprecia de una manera totalmente diferente. ¡Me encanta!
Al principio todo el mundo pensaba que eráis un grupo de cachondeo que hacíais versiones o deformaciones de Cannibal Corpse pero yo siempre he visto que vuestra música es muy seria y es en las letras donde dais rienda suelta a vuestra imaginación y humor alterando títulos de canciones conocidas con referencias a la marihuana. ¿Cómo se os ocurrió esta locura?
A mi hermano y a mí se nos ocurrió la idea cuando éramos muy jóvenes, sería una buena manera de separarnos de la atestada escena del death metal. Disfruto con el desafío que supone tener un tono humorístico y, al mismo tiempo, brutal. Nunca imaginé que crear canciones extrañas sobre monstruos de marihuana me llevaría por todo el mundo, pero lo ha hecho y estoy muy agradecido por eso.
Desde vuestros inicios contasteis con la voz de Weedgrinder pero tras la salida de vuestro gran disco “Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise” abandonó el grupo. ¿Cuál fue el motivo de su salida? ¿Os costó mucho readaptar las canciones como trío y sobre todo, cantar y tocar a la vez?
Agradecemos todo lo que Weedgrinder hizo por nosotros durante los comienzos de la banda pero Cannabis Corpse siempre ha sido, principalmente, mi hermano y yo que nos encargamos de la grabación y de escribir las letras. Tener a Weedgrinder en la banda nos suponía una carga en el proceso creativo y en las relaciones interpersonales en las giras, creímos que era mejor cortar lazos con él y seguir adelante. Disfruto del reto que supone cantar y tocar y, al mismo tiempo, el proceso de escribir las letras y la estructura.
Landphil, ¿cómo consigues compaginar tu vida con el hecho de estar en tres grupos activos y con bastante éxito?
A veces puede ser un reto tener 3 bandas pero me encanta. Tocar música es una sensación de la cual nunca tengo suficiente. Estoy contento de que haya gente que disfrute mi música. Sin ellos no sería capaz de hacer esto, así que estoy agradecido a todos aquellos que apoyan la comunidad metalera.
Recuerdo que estabais de gira por EEUU y no recuerdo dónde el promotor os dejó tirados. Sin perder los ánimos un fan os cedió un local y grabasteis uno de los vídeos más locos que he visto con los fans de esa ciudad. ¿Qué nos podéis contar de la experiencia?
Hace tiempo uno de nuestros shows se canceló. En el último minuto unos amigos montaron una fiesta en su casa y lo grabaron todo. Lo editaron e hicieron un vídeo fantástico para nosotros.
Vuestra inspiración máxima es la marihuana. ¿Estáis a favor de su legalización a nivel mundial? ¿Consumís para componer?
Fumar marihuana ha sido parte de mi vida por mucho tiempo. Estoy contento de que se está “descriminalizando” poco a poco. No creo que la marihuana sea dañina. Sin duda, me ayuda en el proceso creativo.
Sin desvelar sorpresas ni entrar demasiado en detalles, ¿qué nos tenéis preparado para los conciertos en Europa?
Tenemos una buena mezcla de canciones nuevas y antiguas. El setlist ha ido evolucionando con los años, ¡creo que a los fans de Cannabis Corpse estarán encantados!
Somos un poco curiosos y nos interesa saber si os gusta meteros en la cocina y preparar algún plato, ¿pedís alguna cosa especial cuando estáis de gira? Y de bebida, ¿qué acostumbráis a tomar?
Jaja! Voy tanto de gira que apenas tengo tiempo para cocinar, últimamente mi elección de bebida ha sido una Pilsner fresquita.
Brandon Ellis se incorporó a las filas del grupo en el año 2014 pero por lo que he leído, no ha participado en la grabación de vuestros dos últimos discos. ¿A qué se debe? ¿Está muy ocupado con los otros proyectos en los que participa?
Brandon Ellis es un guitarrista fantástico, grabamos un álbum con él para la banda SIX FEET UNDER llamada “Crypt of the Devil” después de grabar ese álbum. THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER le contrató para sustituir a Ryan Knight. Obviamente esa banda se ha convertido en una prioridad para Brandon, ¡pero le queremos y le deseamos suerte!
En vuestro último disco se ve claramente la influencia del death metal europeo pero también las hay americanas de grupos que se alejan de vuestro estilo, ¿cuál es vuestro criterio a la hora de hacer las letras y sobre todo los títulos de estas?
¡Si el título nos hace reír nos lo quedamos! Generalmente escribimos unos cuantos títulos y escogemos los que causan una reacción a nuestros amigos, siempre nos esforzamos por escribir música brutal que nos guste. De niño mis bandas favoritas eran los padres del death metal, como Deicide, Morbid Angel, Death, Cannibal Corpse, etc. Simplemente intento recapturar la sensación y la emoción que me daban esas bandas de pequeño

Welcome to Science of Noise. It is an honor to interview a band I have admired for quite a while and whose music I enjoy so much. How is everything going?
Hello Landphil here, everything is going great! I am currently on tour with MUNICIPAL WASTE doing direct support for EXODUS. The tour is sponsored by a crazy adult swim cartoon called “Mr.pickes” . Every show has been outrageously packed and fun!
Your last disc is a twist of your already characteristic style with very different musical influences, how do you approach the composition of a new CD?.
The new album features guitarist Ray Suhy, his style was incorporated as much as possible in the new album. We have him complete freedom to go in any direction he wanted. I think it resulted in a very different sounding Cannabis corpse album.
After a brief examination of your discography, one discovers a very odd fact; you have never had the same lead guitar player for the recording of more than one CD. Why is the reason for this?
This is not actually correct, I have been handling all the rhythm guitar on all the albums until “Left Hand Pass” Cannabis Corpse had Nick Poulos playing live guitar and solos on the first 4 albums then Guests on the following 2, once Ray Suhy joined I thought it would help us freshen things up a bit by giving Ray the wheel in the guitar dept.
This is the first time you’ll be visiting Spain and it is such an honor to have you here, what are your expectations facing this tour through the old continent?
This is not our first time in Europe but this is the first time in Spain, we have done three Europe tours including one with GHOUL, it is always great to play for the metalheads out there. It feels like metal is appreciated in a completely different way. I love it!
In the beginning everybody thought you were a “parody band” which did covers of Cannibal Corpse but I have always seen your music as very serious and it is precisely in your lyrics where you let loose of your imagination and humor by altering the titles of well-known songs into pot references. How did you come up with this crazy idea?
My brother and I came up with the concept when we were very young, we thought it would be a good way to separate ourselves from the very crowded death metal scene. I enjoy the challenge of being humorous and brutal simultaneously. Creating weird songs about weed monsters is something I never imagined could take me all around the world but it has! And I am thankful!
In your beginnings you had the voice of “Weedgrinder” but after the release of your great “Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise”, he left the band. Why did he do so? Was it hard to readapt the songs as a trio, and above all, sing for Landphill?
We appreciate everything Weedgrinder did for us in the beginning of the band but Cannabis corpse has always been primarily my brother and I, we handled all the recording and writing. having Weedgrinder in the band put a strain on the creative process as well as the interpersonal relationships on tour, we felt it was best to cut ties and move on. I enjoy the challenge of singing and playing as well as writing the lyrics and patterns.
This question is for Landphil. How do you manage to balance your life with the fact of being in three different active group, and quite successful ones at that?
Sometimes it can be a challenge having 3 bands but I love it. Playing music is a thrill that I cannot get enough of. I am happy that there are people that enjoy my music out there. Without them I wouldn’t be able to do this, so I am thankful to everyone that supports the metal community.
I seem to recall you were touring the USA and the promoter bailed on you guys. Without losing your cool, a fan lent you a space and you recorded one of the craziest videos I have ever seen with the fans of said city. What can you tell us about that experience?
A while ago A show of ours fell through. At the last minute some friends put together a rad house party and filmed the whole thing. They edited the footage into a great music video for us.
Your maximum inspiration is marihuana. Are you in favor of legalizing it at a global scale? Do you smoke when composing?
Smoking weed has been a part of my life for a long time. I am happy that things are slowly becoming de criminalized. I don’t think weed is harmful. It helps me in the creative process for sure,
Without getting too much into details, what have you prepared for us for the European concerts?
We have a good mix of new and old songs. Over the years our set list has evolved, I think the cannabis corpse fans out there will be stoked!
We are a little curious and we like to know whether you like to get in the kitchen and cook, do you usually ask for something special when you’re touring? And about drinks, what do you usually like to drink?
Ha ha! I am on tour so much that I rarely have time to cook for myself, lately my drink of choice has been an ice cold Pilsner.
Brandon Ellis incorporated into the band’s line-up on 2014 but, for what I’ve read, he did not participate in the recording of your last two discs. What is this? Is he too busy with other projects he is in?
Brandon Ellis is a fantastic guitarist, we actually cut an album with him for the band SIX FEET UNDER called “Crypt of the devil” after we tracked that record BLACK DAHLIA MURDER hired him to replace Ryan Knight. That band obviously became a priority for Brandon, but we love him and wish him luck!
In your last record a European death metal influence is clearly visible but there are also American influences which differ somewhat from your style, what is your criteria when writing the lyrics and its titles?
If the song title makes us laugh we keep it! We generally write a bunch of titles and pick the ones that get a reaction from our friends, we always strive to write brutal music that we love. As a kid my favorite bands were the fathers of death metal like DEICIDE, MORBID ANGEL, DEATH, CANNIBAL CORPSE, etc. I just try to recapture the feeling that those bands gave me as a kid.
