Entrevista a Liam Cormier, vocalista de Cancer Bats: ‘La vida debe vivirse al máximo’

SofN: Hola, Liam. Muchas gracias por tu tiempo y solo comentarte que es un honor poder intercambiar algunas palabras contigo. Let’s do this! ¿Cómo estás?

¡Estoy súper bien! Ahora mismo estoy en Marrakech, donde acabo de llegar conduciendo la moto desde Inglaterra. ¡Pasé por Barcelona en mi ruta hacia el sur!

SofN: ¡Qué grande! Jajaja. ¡Vamos al grano, venga! En The Spark that Moves (2018), vuestro sexto trabajo, recuperasteis la esencia de vuestros dos primeros álbumes y os quedó un gran álbum, menos producido y más bruto. Felicidades. ¿Estamos hablando de un retorno a las raíces o de un simple paso adelante?

Creo que para nosotros este álbum realmente se pensó en base a ver lo que nos encanta de estar en esta banda, ¿qué canciones seguimos tocando noche tras noche y por qué? Relativizando el poder y los sentimientos brutos de lo que esta banda significa para nosotros y devolviéndolos a una nueva energía. Estoy muy feliz con cómo nos quedó finalmente el álbum.

SofN: En este nuevo trabajo encontramos unas letras muy profundas. “The earth deserves so much better than the human kind” (personalmente, estoy de acuerdo), rezas en la genial «Space and Time». ¿Crees que la sociedad se va a la mierda?

También hablo de esto mismo más adelante, pero creo que se han hecho tantas cosas terribles por tener una visión demasiado corta de las cosas a la Tierra, que tal vez nuestro tiempo aquí debería ser limitado. Dado el grave problema, tal vez deberíamos irnos al infierno.

SofN: «Antes de morir, viviré para siempre», cantas en “Bed of Nails”, una de las mejores canciones del álbum. ¿Qué me puedes contar de él?

¡Que él es yo seguro! Jajaja. Esta canción es sobre ser realmente libre y querer vivir la vida al máximo y no ser retenido por nadie. A veces podemos estar atrapados en las cosas por nuestro propio diseño, creemos que nos sentimos cómodos solo al darnos cuenta de que estamos mintiendo sobre todo el tiempo. Necesitamos liberarnos y vivir nuestras propias vidas.

SofN: Han pasado ya cerca de 4 años des de que publicasteis el controvertido Searching for Zero, como ha envejecido el disco y como lo ves ahora, ya con la cabeza fría?

Realmente amo este álbum y lo necesitábamos para ayudarnos a resolver tanta tragedia con las que todos estábamos lidiando. También aprendimos mucho de Ross Robinson con lo que nos inyectó en The Spark That Moves. Todo fue parte de este viaje.

SofN: Tus shows tienden a ser muy intensos, ¿es tu principal objetivo sentirte cercano del público desde el principio?

Eso es lo que siempre amé de la escena hardcore y me sentí conectado a tantos otros espectáculos y géneros, el punk y hardcore que realmente tienen esa chispa y energía que mantienen vivo todo este sentimiento durante tanto tiempo.

SofN: Hay frontmen especiales que se entregan casi por encima de sus posiblididades, cada noche, cada show. Jacob Banon de Converge, Frank Carter ex de Gallows, Dennis Lyxzén de Refused… Liam Cormier estaría en el mismo paquete. ¿Qué ritual sigues antes de iniciar un show? ¿Cómo te sientes, físicamente y psicológicamente, tras un buen concierto?

Me tomo todos los shows como algo muy físico, así que trato de estirar y calentar como lo harías con cualquier actividad física extrema. Es como una batalla pero de una manera muy positiva. Después de un gran show estoy agotado físicamente y lleno emocionalmente. Es la mejor sensación del mundo.

SofN: Habéis tocado por medio mundo. Hace años tocasteis incluso en Japón o Shangai. Hay públicos más cercanos y públicos más fríos. ¿Puedes contarnos alguna anécdota curiosa de alguno de vuestros shows internacionales ?

Lo más interesante es cuán similares son todos. Son tantos países en los que no podemos hablar el mismo idioma, pero todos somos parte de esta comunidad incondicional. De todos modos tenemos un vínculo común y estamos buscando ser parte de todo. Es un mundo increíble para formar parte de él.

SofN: Y siguiendo con el mismo tema, sin contemplaciones, ¿qué piensas del público español?

Amamos tanto a España… tanto. Desde que llegamos por primera vez en 2007, y todos las veces que hemos regresado, nos hemos sentido muy bienvenidos y hemos tenido tantos espectáculos increíbles. Nos sentimos muy afortunados de haber sido siempre bienvenidos. ¡Muchas gracias!

SofN: Hace unos años leí una entrevista en una revista española en la que tú y Oli de Bring me the Horizon hablabais sobre vuestra música. Ellos han cambiado mucho y han abrazado el mainstream, pero han perdido algo por el camino. ¿Cómo ves este tipo de evolución?

Amo a esos muchachos y veo que están realmente felices con la música que hacen y se sienten realmente inspirados. Creo que mientras estés haciendo música con esos verdaderos sentimientos y motivaciones, eso es todo lo que importa.

SofN: Entiendo. Es otra visión que nosotros no acostumbramos a tener. En cambio, vosotros seguís dando guerra con vuestro estilo, aunque eso os lleve a ser inmensos sin salir del círculo underground. ¿Lo cambiaríais?

Me encanta tocar en Cancer Bats y este estilo de hardcore que hemos creado para nosotros mismos. Es un regalo tan increíble poder interpretar estas canciones y hacer que la gente se presente en los shows listos para perder la cabeza junto a nosotros. Eso no lo cambiaría por nada.

SofN: Hablando de otras bandas, ¿a qué bandas invitarías si pudieras hacer el mejor festival musical de la historia, algo así como el Cancer Bats Fest?

Me gustaría que Led Zeppelin y Beastie Boys tocasen en una pequeña sala de 300 personas para mí y para todos mis amigos… ¡y el helado sería gratis para todos!

SofN: En unas semanas vendréis a Barcelona, junto a vosotros tocará la banda local The Wax, banda que nos gusta mucho. ¿Ya los conocíais? ¿Qué te parece su propuesta y actitud?

No los conocía hasta que mi gran amigo Jordi de RockZone Mag me los recomendó para el concierto. ¡Creo que será una gran mezcla y tengo muchas ganas de verlos en directo!

SofN: ¿Qué vas a darnos en ese concierto? Piensa que hace años que no os acercáis por Barcelona…

Ahora ya estamos preparados para la destrucción con más años de experiencia. Estamos listos para hacer estallar en el escenario.

SofN: Tuve el placer de ver a Cancer Bats tocando como Bat Sabbath en la pequeña Sala Rocksound de Barcelona junto a The Eyes interpretando temas de Sepultura. Recuerdo que el show fue intenso e inmenso. ¿Seguís haciendo este tipo conciertos?

Nos encanta tocar pequeños shows intensos. Hicimos una gira muy divertida de 5 shows por el Reino Unido donde las entradas costaban 5 £, y tocamos en clubes pequeños de 100 personas. Era hermoso ver el caos cada noche.

SofN: Y por último… ¿puedes comentar tus cinco temáticas favoritas a la hora de escribir temas de Cancer Bats?

Algunas de mis líneas favoritas están tomadas de mis propias expresiones. Ya digo todo el tiempo jajaja, por lo que el Top 5 sería:

1. “Let’s do this” – Yo y todos mis amigos lo decimos todo el tiempo. Especialmente al montar en motos de cross… jajaja.
2. “On the outside looking right out”, de la canción «Black Metal Bicycle», que me encanta porque se trata de no encajar en ningún lugar, sino con tus amigos más cercanos y dentro de esta comunidad incondicional.
3. “My salvation, Bricks and Mortar” – Esta canción trata sobre mis amigos y cómo me inspiran y me motivan a hacer tanto en la vida. Muchas personas dirigen sus propios negocios y hacen cosas creativas geniales, me dan ganas de trabajar mucho más.
4. “We take this life / we make this life”, de la canción «Bed of Nails» y realmente me emociona. Mi buen amigo Alex Snelgrove es un increíble tatuador y él y yo estábamos hablando de viajar y vivir de acuerdo con nuestras propias reglas y hacer lo que queríamos, y se nos ocurrió esa línea. Para mí es muy poderosa y motivadora y todavía nos lo decimos mutuamente para animarnos.
5. “The earth deserves so much better than the human race», de nuestra canción «Space and Time». Es uno de mis favoritos en el nuevo álbum y probablemente el más político en una canción. Tengo la suerte de poder viajar por el mundo tanto como lo hago, pero a su vez solo veo a muchas personas que no respetan y destruyen este hermoso lugar que llamamos nuestro hogar. Esperemos que podamos cambiar el daño épico que se ha hecho hasta ahora, pero a veces parece que las probabilidades no están a nuestro favor.

SofN: Hi, Liam! Thank you very much for your time. I just wanted to tell you that it is an honor to be able to exchange some words with you! Let’s do this! How are you?

I’m so great! I’m answering this from Marrakesh after riding a motorcycle here from England. I even passed thru Barcelona on my way down.

SofN: Wow, great! Hahaha. Let’s start! In The Spark that Moves (2018), your sixth work, you recovered the essence of your first two albums and you left a great album, less produced, more gross. Congratulations. Are we talking about a return to the roots or a simple step forward?

I think for us this album was really taking the time to look at what we loved about being in this band, which songs we still love playing night after night and why ? Boiling down the raw power and feelings pf what this band means to us and firing it back into new energy. I’m so happy with how this album turned out.

 SofN: In this new work we find some deep lyrics, «The earth deserves so much better than the human kind» (personally I agree) you pray in the great «Space and Time». Do you think society is going to hell ? 

I talk about this later on as well but i think that there has been so many terrible short sighted things that have been done to the Earth that maybe our time here should be limited. Since were the problem maybe we should go the hell.

SofN: «Before I die, I’ll live forever» you sing in Bed of Nails, one of the best songs on the album. What can you tell me about him?

That him is me for sure… haha. This song is about being truly free and wanting to live life to its fullest and not being held back by anyone. Sometimes we can be trapped in things by our own design, we think were comfortable only to realize we’re lying on needles this whole time. We need to break free and live our own lives.

SofN: It’s been almost 4 years since you published the controversial Searching for Zero, how the album has get old and how do you see it now, with cool head?

I really love this album and i needed it to help work through so many of the tragedies we were all dealing with. We also learned so much from Ross Robinson that we injected into The Spark That Moves. All of it was a part of this journey were on.

SofN: Your shows tend to be very intense, is your main goal to feel close to the public since the start?

That’s always what I’ve loved from the hardcore scene and felt connected to vs so many other shows and genres its punk and hardcore that really have that spark and energy that keeps all this feeling alive for so long.

SofN: There are special frontmen that are devoted almost beyond their possibilities, every night, every show. Jacob Banon of Converge, Frank Carter of Gallows, Dennis Lyxzén of Refused… Liam Cormier would be in the same package. What ritual do you have before starting a show? How do you feel, physically and psychologically after a good concert?

I approach all shows as a very physical thing so i try to stretch and warm up like you would for any extreme physical activity. Its like a battle but in a really positive way. After a great show im exhausted physically and so full emotionally. Its the best feeling in the world.

SofN: You have played in half the world, You played even in Japan or Shanghai. There are closer public and more cold public. Can you tell us some curious thing about any of your international shows?

The most interesting thing is how similar they all are. In so many countries we cant speak the same language but we all are a part of this hardcore community that we have a common bond regardless and are looking to be a part of everything in those similar ways. Its such an amazing world to be a part of.

SofN: And continuing with the same theme, without contemplation, what do you think of the Spanish audience?

We love Spain so so so much. Since we first came in 2007 and every year we have been back we have felt so welcomed and played so many amazing shows. We feel very lucky to have been welcomed in so much. ¡Muchas gracias!

SofN: Some years ago I read an interesting interview in a Spanish magazine in which you and Oli (from Bring me the Horizon) talked about your music. They have changed a lot and embraced the mainstream, but they have lost something along the way. How do you see this kind of evolution?

I love those guys and see that they are really happy in the music they making and feeling really inspired. I think as long as you’re making music with those true feelings and motivations that’s all that matters.

SofN: On the other hand, you keep causing troubles with your style, even if that leads you to be immense without leaving the underground circle. Would you change it?

I love playing in Cancer Bats and this style of hardcore we’ve carved out for our selves. Its such an amazing gift to be able to perform these songs and have people show up to loose their minds along with us, i wouldn’t trade it for anything.

SofN: Talking about other bands… What bands would you invite if you could make the best musical festival in history, something like the Cancer Bats Fest?

I would have Led Zeppelin and Beastie Boys play in a small 300 cap bar for me and all my friends and their would be free ice cream for everyone.

SofN: In a few weeks you will come to Barcelona, the show will be opened by the local band The Wax. Did you know them previously? What do you think about their proposal and attitude?

I didn’t know The Wax until my great friend Jordi from RockZone Mag recommended them for the concert. I think it’ll be a great mix and i cant wait to see them live!

SofN: What are you going to give us in that concert? Remember that Cancer Bats haven’t come here for many years …

We are now primed for destruction with years of experience ready to explode onto the stage.

SofN: I had the pleasure of seeing Cancer Bats playing like Bat Sabbath in the small Rocksound stage in Barcelona together with The Eyes performing songs by Sepultura. I remember that the show was intense and special. Are you still doing this type of concerts?

We love playing small intense shows. We did a really fun run of 5 shows in the UK where tickets were on 5£ and we played small 100 cap clubs. It was beautiful chaos every night.

SofN: And the last one. Are you able to quote your five favorite songwriting topics from Cancer Bats?

Some of my favourite lines are all taken from my own expressions i already say all the time… hahaha so top 5 would be:

1. “Let’s do this” – Me and all my friends say this all the time still. Especially when riding dirt bikes… hahaha
2. “On the outside looking right out”  from the song «Black Metal Bicycle» which i love because its about not fitting in any where but with your closest friends and within this hardcore community something i know we all feel sometimes
3. “My salvation, Bricks and Mortar” – This whole song is about my friends and how they inspire and motivate me to do so much in life. So many people run their own businesses and do cool creative things, it makes me want to work so much harder.
4. “We take this life / we make this life” from the song «Bed of Nails» and gets me really pumped. My good friend Alex Snelgrove is an awesome tattooer and she and i were talking about traveling and living by our own rules and doing what we wanted and we came up with that line. To me its so empowering and motivating and we still say it to each other to pump ourselves up.
5. “The earth deserves so much better than the human race” from our song «Space and Time». Its one of my favourites on the new album and probably the most political I’ve been on a song. I’m lucky in that i get to travel the world as much as i do but in turn i just see so many people disrespecting and destroying this beautiful place we call home. Hopefully we can shift the epic damage that’s been done so far but it sometimes feels like the odds are not in our favour.
