Entrevista a Love Forsberg y Sam Riffer, batería y bajista de Siena Root: ‘Era extraño salir a tocar y divertirnos cuando había gente luchando por su vida a pocos kilómetros de distancia’

¡Hola, chicos! Muchas gracias por vuestro tiempo y solo deciros que es un honor poder intercambiar algunas palabras con vosotros! ¡Adelante! ¿Cómo estáis?

La humanidad ha experimentado recientemente un shock muy importante. Crisis mundial, Covid, guerra… ¿Cómo os ha afectado a nivel personal / de banda?

L – A pesar de todo lo que conlleva una crisis, creo que es una fuente de inspiración para la música. Todo lo malo trae algo bueno, pero a veces es difícil verlo. Para nosotros, como para la mayoría de las bandas, Covid supuso un gran parón en las giras. Eché mucho de menos encontrarme con el público.

Sam – La guerra nos afectó mucho a nivel personal y musical. Recuerdo que salimos de gira por Europa central pocos días después de que empezara la guerra. Era extraño salir a tocar y divertirnos cuando había gente luchando por su vida a pocos kilómetros de distancia. Discutimos si estaba bien o mal y si debíamos cancelarlo, pero al final lo hicimos, y cada noche hablábamos con el público de que todos hemos dado la paz más o menos por sentada y de lo frágil que es.

La pandemia y sus daños colaterales han tenido un enorme impacto en la industria. Bandas, promotores, medios de comunicación… todos hemos sufrido para superar estos dos largos años. Si no me equivoco, The Secret of Our Time, vuestro séptimo álbum, salió justo cuando se produjo el cierre. ¿Cómo vivisteis la cancelación de los conciertos y cómo adaptasteis vuestro futuro inmediato a la realidad que vivimos?

L – Nuestro séptimo álbum de estudio, The Secret of Our Time, salió a la venta el día del cierre en Suecia. Se canceló casi toda nuestra gira de presentación y Zubaida enfermó gravemente de Covid. Fue un momento duro para volver a la pista, y después de todo conseguimos dar más conciertos que la mayoría de las otras bandas durante la crisis del covid.

Sam – Sí, aún no sabíamos si la gira iba a tener lugar o no cuando quedaban pocos días, ningún concierto se canceló oficialmente, pero cada vez era más obvio que la gira no iba a tener lugar. Creo que fue una lástima para The Secret of Our Time un gran álbum que no alcanzó todo su potencial debido a la pandemia.

The Secret of Our Time es el sucesor perfecto de A Dream of Lasting Peace. Parece que habéis encontrado un sonido definido, así como una identidad más ecléctica, por así decirlo. ¿Es una evolución natural o estáis intentando abriros a cosas nuevas?

L – Es tanto una evolución natural de la banda como que la banda siempre ha estado interesada en probar nuevas ideas.

Sam – Sí, siempre nos ha interesado avanzar y experimentar con nuestras ideas musicales. No hacemos el mismo álbum una y otra vez ni el mismo concierto dos veces. Dicho esto, algunas bandas son muy buenas haciendo lo mismo una y otra vez, pero no es nuestro caso jeje.

Recientemente habéis lanzado una nueva canción titulada «Keeper of the Flame», el primer adelanto de Revelation. El álbum saldrá a la venta el 24 de febrero, estoy impaciente por escucharlo. Si sigue la dinámica de Keeper of the Flame puedo asegurar que será un gran álbum, porque la canción es genial. Enhorabuena, ¿qué nos podéis contar al respecto?

L – «Keeper of the Flame» es una de mis favoritas del disco, también representativa para el álbum. Reveleation es mitad acústica y mitad eléctrica, una experiencia de rock de raíces muy dinámica.

Sam- Esta canción no viene de una jam en realidad, Zubaida la tenía muy trabajada antes de presentarla al resto, realmente me gusta también.

La vida nos anima a soñar, a cumplir metas que tenemos en mente. ¿Qué sueños realistas tiene aún Siena Root que quiera cumplir?

L – Muchos. Primero me gustaría hacer una gira por todos los continentes del mundo. Revelation es un álbum fantástico, pero también creo que podemos crear un álbum aún mejor la próxima vez.

Sam – Todavía me gustaría llegar a nuevos públicos en todo el mundo, creo que nuestra música podría gustar a muchos más de los que la han escuchado hasta ahora.

Estar en una banda y hacer tantas giras no es sólo salir al escenario y tocar una hora y media con tus compañeros y «adiós muy buenas». Al final, tus compañeros son como tu familia, o tu pareja, compartís escenario, viajes, experiencias, emociones… ¿Cuál es el mejor recuerdo de estos años «en familia»?

L – Cada vez que salimos a hacer un bis para una sala llena de vítores, son los mejores momentos para recordar.

Sam – Normalmente los momentos más duros son los que dan lugar a las mejores historias, y también nos hacen más fuertes como familia. Además, las nuevas experiencias son siempre muy buenas, como nuevos países, nuevos festivales, etc., etc.

Lleváis 25 años en activo, vuestro primer álbum cumplirá 20 años… ¿Qué cosas de su carrera cambiaría si pudiera volver atrás?

L – Creo que es inútil arrepentirse. Intento recordar y hacerlo de otra manera la próxima vez, si tengo la oportunidad.

Sam – Hemos sido muy testarudos y orgullosos de seguir nuestro propio camino en todos los aspectos y, aunque no me arrepiento de nada ni hay nada que quisiera cambiar, creo que hemos aprendido a centrarnos menos en los pequeños detalles y a fijarnos más en el panorama general.

Para presentar Revelation habéis anunciado una pequeña gira, ¿qué planes tenéis en mente para la presentación?

L – El 23 de febrero tenemos el estreno en cines de nuestra road movie documental poética Wheels of Revelation. Esta película captura mágicamente a Siena Root en su viaje creando su último álbum Revelation.

Humanity has recently experienced a very important shock. World crisis, covid, war… How has it affected you on a personal / band level?

L – Dispite all anciety and hardship that a crisis brings, it’s a source of inspiration for music, I think. All bad thing bring something good along, it’s just tough to see it sometimes. For us as most bands, Covid was a big halt in touring. I missed to meet the audience very much.

Sam – I was heavily affected by the war on a personal and musical level. I remember that we went on tour in central Europe just a few days after the war started. It felt strange to go out and play music and enjoy ourselves when people were fighting for their lives just a few kilometers away. We discussed about if it was right or wrong and if we should cancel but in the end we went along with it but adressed the audience about it every night, that we’ve all been taken peace more or less for granted and how fragile that is.

The pandemic and its collateral damage has had a huge impact on the industry. Bands, promoters, media… we have all suffered to overcome these two long years.  If I’m not mistaken, The Secret of Our Time, your seventh album was released just when we were closed down. How did you experience the cancellation of concerts and how did you adapt your immediate future to the reality we live in?

L – Our seventh studio album, The Secret of Our Time, was released on the day of lockdown in Sweden. Almost all of our release tour was cancelled and Zubaida went very ill with covid. It was a tough time to get back on track, and after all we managed more concerts than most other bands during the covid crisis.
Sam – Yeah we still didn’t know if the tour was gonna happen or not when it was just a few days left, no show was officially canceled but it became more and more obvious that the tour ain’t gonna happen. I think it was a pitty for “the Secret of our Time” a great album that didn’t reach it’s full potential due to the pandemic.

The Secret of Our Time is the perfect successor to A Dream of Lasting Peace. It seems that you have found a defined sound as well as a more eclectic identity so to speak. Is it natural evolution or are you just trying to open up to new things?

L – It’s both a natural progression of the band and the band has always been interested to try new ideas.
Sam – Yes, we’ve always been keen on moving forward and experiment with our musical ideas. We don’t do the same álbum over and over nor the same concert twice. That said some bands are really Good at doing the same thing again and again, but it’s not for us hehe.

I dare to affirm that we are facing the most personal album of the band. You have also dared to play new keys and provide a new range of colors from this already wide palette that you have. What has made you give another twist? Aren’t you afraid that these new sounds won’t please your fans?

L – I don’t think about pleasing some fan in the first place. I’m sure that most fans understand that in the moment artists make art/music without integrity, the art/music looses it’s quality.
Sam – We don’t plan how the creative process should be, it lives it’s own life anyway. That said we originally talked about doing an allá acoustic álbum from the beginning but then ended up writing some great heavy songs also, the blend of acoustic and electric was a revelation to us.  

The Secret of Our Time contains some of the best moments from Siena Root. You have had a lot of time to prepare and polish it. How does the creation/writing phase work in a band like Siena Root? How do you combine your personal life with work in the band?

L – Thank you, I’m happy you say so. Making music has always been timeconsuming with Siena Root because we let everyone contribute to the songwriting. It’s tough but I think it ads to the quality of the album.
Sam – Lots of the music comes from jamming really but a few songs are written “at home” by a band member from time to time.

You recently released a new song titled «Keeper of the Flame», the first preview of Revelation. The album will be released on February 24th, I can’t wait to hear it. If it follows the dynamic of «Keeper of the Flame» I can assure you that it will be a great album, because the song is great. Congratulations, what can you tell us about it?

L – Keeper of the Flame is one of my favorites of the album, also representative for the album. Reveleation is half acoustic and half electric, a very dynamic root rock experience.
Sam- This song does not come from a jam actually, Zubaida had this one worked out pretty much before she presented it to the rest, really like it also.

Life encourages us to dream, to meet goals that we have in mind. What realistic dreams does Siena Root still have that you want to fulfill?

L – Many. First I would like to tour all continents of the world. Revelation is a fantastic album, but I also think that we can create an even better album next time.
Sam – I still would like to reach new audiences across the world, I think our music could appeal to a lot more tan the ones that heard it so far. 

Being in a band and touring so much is not just going on stage and playing an hour and a half with your teammates and «goodbye very good». In the end, your colleagues are like your family, or your partner, you share the stage, travel, experiences, emotions… What is the best memory of these years «as a family»?

L – Everytime we go out to make an encore for a cheering full house, it’s the best moments to remember.
Sam – Usually the toughest moments makes the best stories afterwards, also those moments makes us stronger as a family. Besides that the new experinces are always very good like new countries, new festivals etc. etc.

You have been active for 25 years, your first album will be 20 years old… What things in your career would you change if you could go back?

L – No use having regrets, I think. I try to remember and do it another way the next time, if I get the chance.
Sam – We’ve been very stuborn and proud of going our own way in all respects and allthough there is no regrets or anything I would want to change, I think that we’ve learned to focus less on smaller details and to look more at the big picture. 

To present Revelation you have announced a small tour, what plans do you have in mind for the presentation?

L – On February 23rd we have a movie premiere of our poetic documentary road movie Wheels of Revelation. This movie magically captures Siena Root on their journey creating their latest album Revelation.
