¡Más vale tarde que nunca! Aprovechando la mini gira española que hicieron a mediados de noviembre, y después de varias intentonas infructuosas, nos pusimos en contacto con Eclipse para entrevistar a su guitarrista Magnus Henriksson. Al contestar al teléfono, la sorpresa fue que, en los altavoces, estaba también Philip Crusner, nuevo batería de la banda, con lo que os podéis imaginar el jaleo en el que se convirtió aquello.
Así que vamos a ver qué sale de aquí…
SofN: Hola Magnus y Philip. Antes de nada, gracias por la entrevista. ¿Qué tal estos días en España?
MH: Estamos muy bien, muy contentos y España es como volver a casa cada vez que venimos. La gente es muy maja y los shows son siempre eléctricos y magníficos. Estamos super contentos.
PC: Quiero añadir una observación. Estábamos en Finlandia en invierno, y ahora disfrutamos de un clima bastante bueno y buena comida y cerveza. Nos encanta estar en España, especialmente durante el invierno.
SofN: Bueno, para nosotros hoy hace bastante frío, pero supongo que para vosotros no tanto.
MH: ¿Frío? No, no, qué va.
SofN: Desde mi punto de vista, Eclipse es una de las bandas con mayor crecimiento en los últimos años. Mayor crecimiento y mayor fama. ¿Cómo se vive esto desde dentro de la propia banda?
MH: Sí, en el último para de años hemos crecido bastante, indudablemente, y esperamos crecer más y más… especialmente en España. Estamos muy contentos por todo.
SofN: Os hemos visto en este pequeño tour, en las dos últimas ediciones del Rock Fest en Barcelona, os veremos en otros festivales en España… ¿Qué podéis decirnos del público?
MH: El público español es el mejor del mundo. Lo hablábamos ayer por la anoche (ndr. concierto en Bilbao), fue increíble, ya sabes.
PC: La primera vez que vinimos a España hicimos sold out, tuvimos una gran acogida. En Madrid 400 personas. Un puto sold out. Siempre tenemos una bienvenida muy cálida.
SofN: Podemos verte, Magnus, en Eclipse, en W.E.T. y colaborando con otras bandas, no está mal. ¿Qué podemos esperar en el futuro próximo?
MH: ¿El futuro de Eclipse?
SofN: Y el tuyo, personalmente…
MH: Wow. Hemos empezado a escribir nuevas canciones para Eclipse. De hecho ahora mismo estamos escribiendo, y estamos planeando tours para el 2018.
PC: Tenemos canciones nuevas. Va a ser el mejor álbum de Eclipse.
SofN: Esta pregunta quizá sea extraña. Desde el Are You Ready To Rock (2008) cada álbum de Eclipse parece una obra maestra. ¿Cual es vuestro preferido?
MH: Bueno, no puedo decir demasiado, es una locura hablar de todo esto. Mi preferido es Bleed & Scream (2012). Creo que es el álbum más heavy que tenemos. No sé qué decir, ¿qué dices tú?
PC: Creo que Monumentum es el mejor trabajo que hemos hecho ya que es el primero conmigo en la banda. Es el más duro.
SofN: Esta va de mis gustos personales. ¿Podré escuchar en directo, alguna vez, «Take Back The Fear» o «Unbreakable», que son de mis temas preferidos de Eclipse?
MH: «Unbreakable» es uno de mis temas preferidos también. He intentado una y otra vez que entrase en los set lists, pero no lo he logrado. De hecho estamos pensando en incluirla de nuevo en el set, pero no tenemos demasiado tiempo para ensayos. Estaremos de gira en enero en Alemania, en Suiza, y en Suecia… esta canción estará en el tour de enero, así que si vienes a vernos la escucharás.
PC: Pero no «Take Back The fear», ¡es demasiado rápida!
SofN: Para mí, Monumentum (2017) es el álbum del año hasta la fecha. ¿Qué diferencias podéis ver entre este disco y Bleed & Scream o Armageddonized?
MH: No sé… siempre hemos tenido una visión para cada álbum que hacíamos. Cuando escribimos Bleed & Scream teníamos una visión: teníamos que hacer un álbum muy diverso y creo que cada canción es bastante diferente del resto. Creo que hicimos un muy buen trabajo con eso. Teníamos “Wake Me Up”, que es un trallazo de hard rock. Teníamos una balada, teníamos “About To Break”, una canción que va creciendo. Por eso me gusta Bleed & Scream, porque es muy diverso. Luego vino Armageddonized (2015), que en mi opinión es un álbum que sólo tiene buenos temas. Monumentum es también muy diverso. Mucha diversidad, sin duda. Quieres sentir las canciones, ¿sabes? Pero al final no puedes planear del todo como saldrá, lo único que puedes hacer es escribir canciones tantas buenas como puedas.
SofN: Otra difícil. ¿Cual es vuestra canción favorita de Eclipse?
MH: ¿ME das un minuto? «Unbreakable» es el tema, sin duda.
PC: Mi preferida es «Wide Open».
MH: Oh esa es buena. También está «Black Rain». Es muy divertida de tocar en directo.
SofN: He escuchado que mencionais «Wide Open». En el show del viernes en Madrid, supongo que ayer en Bilbao y hoy Barcelona pudimos escucharla en acústico junto a «Battlegrounds». ¿Por qué tocáis estos dos temas tan potentes en acústico?
MH: Porque nos gusta romper el set list con temas acústicos para hacerlo algo más dinámico. Si sólo tocas trallazos de heavy metal durante todo el show, la gente se cansará… necesitamos parar un poco… y luego volver a subir. Por eso nos gusta tocar una parte acústica en el show, porque da a todo el mundo, incluyendo a la banda, un ratito de reflexión.
PC: Y yo me puedo tomar un descanso, jajaja.
MH: El batería dice que quiere un descanso… así que es algo bueno para todos, incluyendo al público y a la banda.
SofN: ¿Qué canción de Eclipse creéis que representa mejor su música?
MH: «Bleed & Scream», quizá. O «How To Mend A Broken Heart».
SofN: Si pudierais escoger tres bandas con las que girar, ¿a quien escogeríais?
PC: Nunca he visto a Def Leppard. Realmente quiero ver a Def Leppard.
MH: Una vez abrimos para Def Leppard.
PC: ¿De verdad?
MH: Sí, en Finlandia. Escogería a Whitesnake, Metallica… ya abrimos para Aerosmith, también para Scorpions…
PC: ¿He dicho ya Metallica?
MH: Héroes del Silencio…
PC: Iron Maiden.
MH: ¿Y tú qué opinas?
SofN: Ayer vi el show de Helloween (Pumpkins United), y hubiese estado genial veros con ellos.
MH: Helloween, sí. Sería genial.
PC: Yo llevaría a Dimmu Borgir (risas)
SofN: En el fútbol es muy popular hacer dream teams con futbolistas de todos los tiempos. Si tuvierais que hacer una dream band, ¿qué músicos escogeríais?
MH: Hummm… Dream Team… Zlatan Ibrahimovic sería uno.
PC: jajaja
MH: Esta es difícil. Empecemos con el batería. Escocgería a Philip Crusner para la batería.
PC: Oh muy bien, muy amable por tu parte. Yo no le escogería, jajaja.
MH: Y a quién escogerías?
PC: ahmmm… No lo sé… ¿Se supone que tengo que hacer una banda de heavy metal?
MH: De hard rock, metal, lo que sea…
PC: Uno bueno sería Gene Krupa o alguien del estilo.
MH: Sí, ese es uno bueno. Gene Krupa a la batería. Ahora el bajista.
PC: A nadie le importa el bajista.
MH: Yo escogería Peter Baltes de Accept para el bajo.
PC: Ok, dos guitarras.
MH: Por desgracia Malcom Young está muerto, así que no lo podemos escoger.
PC: Sí que podemos.
MH: ¿Podemos? ¡Ok! Entonces escogería a Malcom Young en la guitarra. Y para la guitarra solista escogería al puto Ritchie Blackmore. ¡Rit-chie Black-more!
PC: ¿Y para las voces?
MH: David Coverdale. Sí, David Coverdale, o quizá…
PC: ¿Y en los teclados?
MH: No habría teclados.
PC: Pero si tuvieramos que tener teclista escogería a Johann Sebastian Bach.
MH: jajaja.
SofN: No está mal… (risas)
PC: En un órgano. Un órgano de iglesia.
MH: Ahí tienes una pedazo de banda.
PC: Ya ves.
MH: Y tendría a Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart en el banquillo, esperando para entrar.
PC: Ahí lo tienes.
SofN: Eso es tener buen gusto musical.
MH: ¿No hay nada más, ¿verdad? Tour management, quizá…
PC: Malcom McLaren para el puesto de tour manager. El manager de los Sex Pistols.
MH: jajaja

SofN: Hello Magnus and Philip. first of all, thanks for this interview. How are you living this days in Spain?
MH: We are very good, very happy and Spain is like coming home every time we come here. People are so nice and the shows are always electric and magnificent. It is just… We’re super happy.
PC: I want to add an observation. We always, you know…. We were in Finland in winter. And now we have pretty good weather and big food and beer. We love to be in Spain and specially during winter time.
SofN: Well Today is quite cold day for us, but I guess is not so cold for you.
MH: Cold? No, no, not at all.
SofN: From my point of view, Eclipse is one of the bands with a higher growth in the last years. Higher growth and higher fame. How do you live this from inside the band?
MH: Yes. In the last couple of years we’ve had good growth, absolutely, and we hope to be growing and growing, specially in Spain. So, We’re super happy for everything.
SofN: We have seen you during this little tour, in the last two editions of the Rock Fest in Barcelona, we’ll see you was well in some other festival in Spain,…. What can you tell as about the answer of the audience in general and the Spanish audience in particular.
MH: The Spanish audience is the best in the world. We talked about it last night and it was incredible, you know.
PC: The first time we came to Spain we sold out, we had a great reception, in Madrid, four hundred people. We had a fucking sold out. We always have a very warm welcome.
SofN: We can see you in Eclipse, we can see you in W.E.T. and collaborating with other bands… What can we expect from you in the near future?
MH: The future for Eclipse?
SofN: For Eclipse and for you personally, in music.
MH: Wow, for Eclipse we started to write new songs. we are writing right now, and we are booking of tours for next year 2018.
PC: We have new songs. It’s gonna be the best Eclipse album.
SofN: This question might be a bit weird. From the “Are you ready to rock” album every Eclipse album seems a masterpiece. Which is your favorite one?
MH: Well, I can not say much about it, for me is madness to talk about this. My favorite one is Bleed & Scream. I think is the most heavy metal album. I don`t know what to feel. What do you say?
PC: I think Monumentum is the best work we’ve done and the first with me as part of the band. It’s the hardest one.
SofN: This is a personal taste of mine. Will I be able to hear sometime live songs like «Take back the fear» or «Unbreakable», which are two of my favorite Eclipse songs?
MH: «Unbreakable» is actually one of my absolutely favorite songs. I have tried and tried to get it on the setlist, but it didn’t work. Actually we were thinking about including that song into the set again, but we have no time to rehearse. We will be touring again in January in Germany, in Switzerland and Sweden…. This song will be in the next tour in January, so If you come there to watch us you’ll hear it.
PC: But not «Take back the fear», it’s too fast!
SofN: For me, Monumentum is the album of the year so far. What differences can you see between this album and bleed & Scream and Armagedonize?
MH: I don’t know….we’ve always had a vision for every album we made, when we wrote Bleed & scream I had a vision: We had to make the album very diverse and I think every song is quite different. I think we did a very good job with that. We had “Wake Me Up”, which is a full on blast hard rock metal tune. We had a ballad, we had “nbmnb cdof Chase”, which is a song that builds up, that’s why I like “Bleed and Scream”, because is so diverse. Then we got Armagedonize, which in my opinion is an album that has only great songs through the whole album. Monumentum has also a lot of diversity. A lot of diversity actually. You want to feel the songs, you know?… And in the end you can’t really plan how is gonna turn out, the only think you can do is write as good songs as you possibly can.
SofN: Another difficult one. Which is your favorite Eclipse song?
MH: Can I have a minute? «Unbreakable» is absolutely the one
PC: My personal favorite is «Wide Open».
MH: Oh that’s a good one. Well, there’s «Black Rain». Is really fun to play that song.
SofN: I heard you mentioned «Wide open». On Friday’s show in Madrid, I guess in yesterday’s show in Bilbao’s and tonight’s show in Barcelona we could hear it and battlegrounds in acoustic. Why these two powerful songs are played in acoustic?
MH: Because we like to break down the set with acoustic songs, to make it a bit more dynamic. If you only play full blast on heavy metal all the show, people will get tired….we need to break it down a little …and then build it up again, because if you just play full on hard rock or metal for two hours, people is gonna be tired. That’s why we like to play an acoustic acoustic part of the show, cause it gives everyone, including the band, a little time to rest
PC: And I get to have a break jajaja
MH: The drummer says he wants a break… So, It’s good for everyone including audience and the band.
SofN: Which song of Eclipse do you think better represents the bands music?
MH: «Bleed & Scream» maybe, or «How to Mend a Broken Heart».
SofN: If you could choose three bands in the world to tour with which did you choose?
PC: I had never seen Def Leppard. I really want to see Def Leppard.
MH: We opened for Def Leppard.
PC: Really?
MH: Yeah, in Finland. Whitesnake, Metallica, we did Aerosmith, we did Scorpions…
PC: Did I say Metallica?

PC: Oh there you go, that’s very kind of you. I wouldn’t though (laughs)
MH: Who would you have?
PC: Ahhmmm… I don’t know… (pause) But I am supposed to build a metal band?
MH: Hard rock, metal, whatever…
PC: One good one would be maybe Gene Krupa or someone like that.
MH: Yeah, ok, that’s a good one. Gene Krupa on drums…. Now the bass player.
PC: No one cares about the bass player.
MH: I would have Peter Baltes from Accept on bass.
PC: Ok, two guitar players then!
MH: Unfortunately, Malcolm Young is dead, so we can not choose him anymore.
PC: Yes we can!
