Mando Diao es una de esas bandas que sus canciones han labrado parte de la escena rockera e indie de los últimos lustros. ¿Quién no conoce el tema “Dance with somebody”? Seguramente todos lo habéis tarareado alguna vez en la vida.
A parte, los suecos son una banda enamorada de Barcelona como ellos mismos nos recuerdan es esta interesante entrevista. Del inminente nuevo disco, de su pasado y de su futuro hablan sin pelos en la lengua.

Hola chicos, muchas gracias por su tiempo y les digo que es un honor poder intercambiar algunas palabras con vosotros. En primer lugar, felicidades por Bang. ¡Lets go! ¿Cómo estáis?

En pocas semanas publicaréis BANG, vuestro noveno disco, recuperasteis la esencia de vuestros primeros álbumes y dejaste un gran álbum, la guitarra ha vuelto a cobrar más importancia. ¿Estamos hablando de un retorno a las raíces o un simple paso adelante?
¡Siempre es un paso adelante hacer un nuevo disco! No estamos pensando mucho cuando hacemos nuestro trabajo, nos estamos centrando más en lo que sentimos en este momento. Entonces, si tenemos ganas de grabar un disco a base de guitarra, simplemente lo hacemos.
Me atrevo a afirmar que estamos ante el álbum más personal de la banda, incluso el más crudo y oscuro. Las canciones son directas y explosivas. ¿Qué os hizo darle otro giro a Mando Diao?
No hay una razón específica para ello, todo está controlado por nuestras emociones y nuestro estado mental en este momento. Nos inspiramos en diferentes cosas y esto era lo que teníamos en mente por el momento. Siempre hay un poco de melancolía u oscuridad con nosotros. Es parte de nuestra naturaleza.
¿Qué me podéis decir sobre BANG y su proceso de creación? ¿Alguna anécdota que merezca ser compartida con vuestros fans?
Es un disco que queríamos hacer. La mayoría de las canciones están escritas por Björn y Jens. Patso firma también en «Bang» y «Long Long Way». El proceso de grabación fue muy honesto y simple. Fuimos a un estudio, preparamos nuestro equipo y acabamos de explosionar nuestras nuevas canciones. Fue como en una pequeña y apretada banda de garaje que no ha visto el sol en años. Este disco trata de la honestidad y de cómo suena realmente Mando Diao sin ningún filtro.
Los cortes rockeros «Don’t Tell Me» y «He can’t control you» así como la bluesy «Long Long Way» son mis canciones favoritas del disco. ¿Qué me puedes decir sobre estas canciones?
Es nuestra sensación enérgica y maravillosa que hace que las canciones suenen como suenan. Cuando se trata de escribir, es nuevamente el sentimiento honesto que dio vida a la canción. Por ejemplo «Long Long Way», está escrito en un autobús turístico en medio de la noche, tiene una sensación más profunda que el simple hecho de solo viajar, pero supongo que el viaje interminable nos inspiró a escribirlo.
Durante varios años tuve un «romance» personal con tu canción «Dance with Somebody», por este hermoso tema fuisteis nominado para un Grammy sueco. También grabasteís el increíble MTV Unplugged: Above and Beyond … Han pasado diez años. ¿Seguís considerando ese momento como el punto más alto de vuestra carrera?
El pasado nunca puede ser el punto más alto de tu vida. En este momento estamos nuestro pico. No nos importa el éxito económico, solo nuestros propios sentimientos en torno a Mando. Cada registro es un nuevo comienzo. Estamos muy contentos de ser capaces de lanzar música y hacer una gira como lo hacemos nosotros.
Casi veinte años de carrera, si miráis hacia atrás, ¿os sentís mareados? ¿Os imaginabais dónde estáis ahora?
Realmente no miramos mucho hacia atrás, es una gira interminable, los años se mezclan, lo único que cuenta es ahora y el futuro.
Estos últimos años han sido algo convulsos, muchas personas abandonaron la banda, nuevos músicos … ¿Qué me podéis decir sobre la formación actual? ¿Se ha integrado bien Jens Siverstedt?
La vida en el camino te quita mucho, tienes que ser fuerte para enfrentarlo. Jens es 1/5 de la banda, tan simple como eso. Somos una familia. Daniel comenzó la banda con Björn hace mucho tiempo y Patso siempre ha trabajado con nosotros, como prodcuerdo e ingeniero e incluso estuvo de gira con nosotros, así que para nosotros no es nada nuevo.
¿Cómo y cuándo vais a presentar Bang a los fans? Después de la triste cancelación del Doctor Music Festival el verano pasado, ¿cuándo podremos ver a Mando Diao en Barcelona?
No sabemos cuándo nos vamos a encontrar, ¡pero estoy seguro de que será muy pronto! Sabes que Mando tiene una relación amorosa con España, ¿verdad?

In a few weeks, BANG, your nine work, you recovered the essence of your first albums and you left a great album, the guitar has taken more importance again. Are we talking about a return to the roots or a simple step forward?
Its always a step forward to make a new record! We are not thinking so much when we do our work, we´re more focusing on what we feel at the moment. So if we feel like recording a guitarbased record we just do it.
I dare to affirm that we are facing the most personal album of the band, even the most crude, so dark. The songs are direct and explosive. What made you give another twist to Mando Diao?
There are no spesific reason for it, everything is controlled by our emotions and our state of mind at the moment. We get inspired by different things and this was what is on our minds for the moment. There is always a bit of melecholy, or darkness with us. Its part of our nature.
What can you tell me about BANG and its creation process? Any anecdote that deserves to be shared with your fans?
It is a record that we just made. The songs are mostley written by Björn and Jens. Patso was cowriting «Bang» and «Long Long Way». The recording process war very honest and simple. We went to a studio, put up our gear and just smashed in our new songs. Like at tight little garageband who hasn´t seen the sun in years. This record is all about honesty and what Mando Diao truly sounds like without any filter.
The rockers “Don’t Tell Me” and “He can’t control you” and the bluesy “Long Long Way” are my favorites songs. What can you tell me about this songs?
It´s our energetic and groovy feel that make the songs to sound the way they do. When it comes to writing it´s again the honest feeling that brought the song to life. «Long long way» for instance is written on a tourbus in the middle of the night, it has a deeper meening then just traveling but I guess the never ending tour inspired us to write it.
For several years I have a personal «affair» with your song «Dance with Somebody», for this beautiful theme you were nominated for a Swedish Grammy. You also recorded the incredible MTV Unplugged: Above and Beyond … Ten years have passed. Are you still considering that moment the highest point of your career?
The past can never be the highest point of your life. Right now is our peak. We don´t care about economic success, just our own feelings around Mando. Each record is a new start. We are very happy to be abel to release music and tour like we do.
Almost twenty years of career, if you look back, do you feel dizzy? Did you imagine where you are now?
We dont really look back that much, it´s a never ending touring, the years gets mixed up, the only thing that counts is now and the future.
In recent years they have been somewhat convulsed, many people quits the band , new musicians … What can you tell me about the current lineup? Has Jens Siverstedt integrated well?
The life on the road takes alot from you, you have to be strong to cope with it. Jens is 1/5 of the band, as simple as that. We are a family. Daniel started the band with Björn way back and Patso has always worked with us, as a prodcuer and engineer and even toured with us so for us its nothing new.
How and when are you going to present Bang to the fans? After the sad cancellation of the Doctor Music Festival this past summer, when will we be able to see you in Barcelona?
We don´t know when we´ll be coming your way, but I´m sure it´ll be quite soon! You know that Mando has a love relationship with Spain right?
What can we expect from Mando Diao in the future?
