Entrevista a Marios Iliopoulos, guitarrista de Nightrage: ‘Si pudiera volver atrás, me gustaría no haber sido tan inocente de creerme la mierda que me contaba todo el mundo’

SofN: ¡Hola Marios! Antes que nada, muchas gracias por invertir algo de tu tiempo contestando estas preguntas para nosotros. ¿Como estás?

Hola amigo. Todo bien por aquí. Estamos promocionando nuestro nuevo disco y haciendo muchas entrevistas. Por el momento estamos muy contentos con la respuesta.

SofN: Como dices, estáis a punto de publicar vuestro nuevo disco, «Wolf to Man», que saldrá dos años después de vuestro trabajo anterior. Lo primero que me viene a la cabeza al escucharlo es que es obviamente mucho más agresivo y con un espírito mucho más crudo que The Venomous, a la vez que mantiene todas las características habituales de la banda. ¿Por qué decidisteis tomar este camino en este nuevo álbum?

Queríamos hacer un disco más oscuro, más pesado y con un sonido mucho más orgánico. Estamos muy satisfechos con la mezcla y el master que ha hecho Ronnie Björnström. En esta ocasión el sonido es mucho más brutal y hemos querido crear una pared sónica al grabar más guitarras y que su producción junto al bajo y la batería sonara mucho más compacta. Nos llevó más tiempo del esperado pero nos encanta el sonido que hemos acabado consiguiendo, y sentimos que hemos encontrado a la persona adecuada para mezclar nuestros discos a partir de ahora.

SofN: ¿Qué nos puedes contar del proceso de composición y grabación de «Wolf to Man»? ¿Qué se mantiene y qué ha cambiado, tanto musicalmente como mental y energéticamente, entre este disco y el anterior?

La fuerza creativa que formamos Magnus, Ronnie y yo es la misma, y estoy muy contento de como funciona este equipo y de la química que fluye a la hora de componer juntos. Lo primero que hicimos fue grabar las baterías en el estudio en el que trabajo en Tesalónica, en Grecia: Otsemusicstudio, con Nik Logiotatidis. Aquí hemos grabado las baterías y también las guitarras de doce cuerdas. Después volé a Uppsala, en Suecia, donde grabamos todas las guitarras, bajo y voces en el estudio de Ronnie, el Bomb Shelter Studio. Al final, Ronnie Björnström de The Mixroom hizo la mezcla y el master en Umea, Suecia. El disco suena muy rico ya que Ronnie es experto en mezclar discos de metal y trabaja con un mezclador analógico que añade mucha calidez y harmonía al sonido en general. Magnus y yo llevábamos trabajando en este disco durante un año: nos encontramos varias veces y compusimos la mayoría de las canciones juntos. Entonces vino Ronnie, que creó las líneas vocales y escribió las letras. Siempre es genial trabajar con Ronnie y Magnus y ver como nuestras ideas evolucionan hacia canciones que acabamos amando. Al final lo más importante es que el material que obtenemos es jodidadmente bueno.

SofN: Sé que probablemente es aún temprano para decirlo, pero ¿qué canciones de este disco crees que se pueden convertir en clásicos en el futuro de Nightrage?

Creo que «Embrace the Nightrage» y el tema título, «Wolf to Man», tienen ese tipo de potencial, aunque amo todas las caciones de este disco y no creo que sobre ni un segundo. Pero es mejor dejar que sean los fans los que decidan, ya que al final siempre depende todo de ellos, y espero que encuentren muchas canciones en este disco que puedan mantener como favoritas. Nosotros, mientras tanto, estamos muy excitados con todas las canciones, y nos morimos de ganas de que los fans puedan escuchar el nuevo álbum y así poder compartir nuestra música con ellos.

SofN: ¿Qué os gustaría conseguir con este nuevo trabajo? ¿Qué te gustaría ver cuando eches la vista atrás la próxima vez que entres en el estudio?

Quiero que los fans nos encuentren. Después de tantos años sacando discos me encantaría que los fans nos dieran una oportunidad con este nuevo trabajo, que nos apoyen, que vengan a nuestros conciertos y que disfruten de nuestra música. Para mí, este álbum es una nueva era para la banda, después de tantos años siento que por fin hemos llegado a casa. Hemos hecho un disco en el que todos estamos en la misma página y todos hemos dado al máximo a la hora de componerlo y de grabarlo. Así que cuando volvamos de nuevo al estudio para grabar el próximo disco me gustaría recordar este trabajo como el comienzo de algo bueno y nuevo para nosotros.

SofN: En este trabajo habéis incorporado dos nuevos miembros para formar una sección rítmica totalmente nueva: Francisco Escalona al bajo y Dino George Stamoglou a la batería. ¿Qué crees que ambos han sido capaces de aportar al disco? ¿Crees que han sido un factor clave a la hora de sonar tan agresivos?

Franco grabó todas las partes de bajo e hizo un trabajo increíble, ya que ésta fue su primera grabación con Nightrage. Él toca sus líneas siguiendo a la batería y tiene grandes ideas para algunas partes. Me encanta su sonido y también como ha sido capaz de incorporarlo a las canciones de Nightrage. Dino ya estuvo con nosotros en la reciente gira junto a Voivod y sus actuaciones fueron increíbles. Es un chico genial y un batería magnífico, y creo que todo el mundo quedó prendado de él. Magnus y yo grabamos cuatro guiitarras rítmicas y teníamos ese sonido agresivo en el bajo que, junto a la batería, ha sido capaz de crear esa pared que queríamos crear. Para serte sincero, no estábamos del todo satisfechos con el sonido de los dos últimos discos, así que esta vez nos centramos en intentar sonar brutales, y le tenemos que reconocer el mérito a Ronnie Björnström por ayudarnos a conseguirlo. Además, Ronnie Nyman hizo un trabajo magnífico con todas esas capas de voces que añadieron aún más agresividad al sonido que queríamos.

SofN: Hablando de eso, ¿por qué crees que ha habido tantos cambios de formación en Nightrage? ¿Te gustaría tener una formación estable o eso no es importante para ti?

Creo que es una cuestión de elecciones y prioridades por parte de la mayor parte de la gente que ha estado en la banda, y el hecho de que seamos pequeños y que no haya mucho dinero a nuestro alrededor hace que haya gente que se decepcione o pierda interés. Les deseo a todos lo mejor, y ahora tenemos una formación fantástica con la adición de Franco y Dino y el poder de la trinidad creativa que somos Ronnie, Magnus y yo sigue siendo sólido y funcionando muy bien. Espero que la formación se mantenga así para siempre.

SofN: Empezaste Nightrage en el año 2000, y en estos casi veinte años ha habido muchos cambios en la banda: os trasladásteis de Grecia a Suecia, ha habido bastantes músicos entrando y saliendo, habéis cambiado de sello desde Century Media a Lifeforce y ahora a Despotz, habéis publicado ocho discos… como fundador y líder de la banda, en todo este tiempo imagino que has tenido que tomar un montón de decisiones importantes. Con la perspectiva del tiempo, ¿de cuáles estás más orgulloso, cuáles crees que deberías haber tomado antes y con cuáles crees que metiste la pata?

Sí, el tiempo pasa volando, tienes toda la razón. Mirando atrás me doy cuenta que no he cambiado nada: sigo fiel a mí mismo y a mis ideales. Muchos discos y muchas historias, muchas subidas y bajadas, muchos obstáculos que tuve que superar para continuar haciendo lo que siempre he querido con la música que amo tocar. Ojalá hubiera tenido este line up en la banda desde el principio, y estoy seguro que de ser así habríamos tenido diferente suerte. Somos gente muy dedicada a la hora de tocar con Nightrage. Hablando de mí mismo, vivo y respiro esta banda 24 horas al día y 365 días al año, y siempre me siento inspirado y tengo algo que hacer.

Creo que fui un poco inocente cuando tuve que escoger a los miembros de la banda en el pasado, y realmente acabaron siendo totalmente equivocados (risas) Almenos la mayoría de ellos. Y eso pasó por las circunstancias que te contaba antes y también porque me creía toda la mierda que la gente me contaba, que no eran nada más que mentiras. Asi que si pudiera volver atrás me gustaría haber sido más firme con mis decisiones y no tan inocente. No ser solo un «sí señor» a todo el mundo que me decía que amaba a la banda y que quería estar dentro. Pero supongo que todo pasa por un motivo y aprendes de la experiencia y de tus cagadas. En realidad nunca es tarde para mejorar.

SofN: Cuando abrimos nuestra revista hace como un año y medio, el primer artículo que publicamos fue precisamente una reseña de vuestro anterior disco, The Venomous (al que, por cierto, le puse un 9 porque me gustó mucho y me pareció realmente pegadizo). Tanto en esa ocasión como cada vez desde entonces, recuerdo que habéis reaccionado positivamente a todos y cada uno de los artículos que hemos publicado sobre Nightrage, algo que no es tan común en bandas internacionales. ¿Eres tú mismo quien se encaraga de las redes socales de la banda? ¿Qué importancia crees que tienen hoy en día para una banda como vosotros?

Si, para serte sincero soy una especie de manager para esta banda, desde contestar correos electrónicos, llevar las redes sociales, dar entrevistas, hablar con gente de negocios, escuchar los discos, repasar los detalles de los créditos, hablar con empresas patrocinadoras… Es un montón de trabajo, pero como tengo el tiempo y las ganas soy el que se encarga de todo. Pero me gusta, así que no tengo queja.

Contestando a tu pregunta, soy muy activo en redes sociales y siempre intento seguir las noticias relacionadas con la banda. No sé como trabajan otras bandas pero en nuestro caso, incluso recibo las felicitaciones del resto de mis compañeros, que están muy contentos de que haga todo eso y que me dicen que nací para esto (risas).

SofN: En estos últimos años tengo la sensación que el centro de gravedad del death metal melódico se ha trasladado desde Suecia a Finlandia. Suecia sigue lleno de grandes bandas, por supuesto, pero la cantidad de creatividad dentro del género que vemos en Finlandia a día de hoy no tiene rival a día de hoy. ¿Estás de acuerdo? ¿Qué nuevas bandas encuentras más excitantes en ambas escenas?

Sí, de una forma u otra lo que dices es cierto. Creo que el death metal melódico que había sido glorioso en Suecia se ha convertido en algo totalmente distinto y, por desgracia, más pop. Con esto no quiero decir que el pop sea algo malo, pero supongo que mucha gente se ha cansado de tocar metal o de que le califiquen como una banda de metal, no lo sé. Me gustan Omnium Gatherum, de Finlandia, una banda genial. Me siguen gustando At the Gates, y aunque aún me encanta el Slaughter of the Soul creo que han creado un legado increíble. Me encantaría que Dissection aún estuvieran haciendo discos. Hay mucha gente que nos dice que somos una de las pocas bandas llevando el testigo del death metal melódico a nivel de honestidad y de sonido realmente metal. Me lo tomo como un gran cumplido, y me gustaría que más y más gente que ha crecido con esas bandas clásicas nos puedan descubrir también, ya que quizás encontrarían algo que les gusta. Y te aseguro que no somos una banda nostálgica, ya que lo que hacemos es totalmente honesto y 100% metal.

SofN: Hace solo unos meses os pudimos ver abriendo para Voivod, una banda que, sobre el papel, no se parece demasiado a vosotros. ¿Cómo llegásteis a formar parte de ese cartel y cómo fué la gira?

Estuvimos muy felices de poder girar con Voivod, son gente genial y nos sorprensió mucho que les gustáramos tanto, ya que siempre salían a vernos. Gracias a Stephen Moss de Artery Global por arreglarnos esa gira. Nos lo pasamos genial.

SofN: ¿Cuáles son vuestros planes de gira para estos primeros meses del año? ¿Os veremos tocando en España de nuevo en breve?

Queremos volver a España ya que siempre es un sitio genial para nosotros. Ahora mismo estamos planeando una gira por Grecia en abril y una gira europea en mayo. Hemos confirmado nuestro primer festival como cabeza de cartel en el Wathorns festival y tenemos previsto hacer más festivales y fechas europeas más adelante. Queremos girar tanto como sea posible y sentimos que desde Artery Global nos pueden ayudar a ello con el nuevo disco.

SofN: Si pudieras diseñar tú mismo un cartel de gira con las cuatro bandas que quisieras, siendo Nightrage una de ellas, ¿cuáles escogerías y por qué?

Diría Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest y Nightrage. (risas). Soñar es gratis.

SofN: Bien, pues eso es todo. Muchas gracias de nuevo por tu tiempo. Te deseo la mejor de las suertes con la salida del nuevo disco y espero veros pronto sobre el escenario.

SofN: Hello Marios! First of all, thank you very much for spending some time answering these questions for us. How are you these days?

Hey pal everything its cool here we are promoting now the new album with lots of Interviews in mags and we are really happy with the feedback so far.

SofN: You are about to release your new album, «Wolf to Man», that comes almost exactly two years after your previous record. The first thing that strikes when listening to it is that it is obviously much more aggressive and with a much harsher spirit than «The Venomous», while still keeping all the trademark traits of the band. Why did you decide to make this move in this album?

We wanted to make a darker album and a bit heavier with a much more organic sound. We are really pleased with the mix and master that Ronnie Björnström did and this time the sound its way more brutal and we make sure that we get this wall of sound, with recording more guitars and make the whole production along with the bass and drums sounds tighter. It took more time than expected but we dig the sound a lot and we fell that we have found a new great guy to mix our albums from now on.

SofN: What can you tell us about the process of composition and recording of «Wolf to Man»? What has remained the same and what has changed, bot musically, mentally and energetically, between this album and the previous one?

The creative force of me, Magnus and Ronnie it´s the same, I´m happy of how this teamwork really works for us, and the chemistry we have it really flows for us to compose music together. First we recorded the drums in the studio that I´m working in Thessaloniki Greece Otsemusicstudio with Nik Logiotatidis make all the drum recordings, plus all the 12 string guitars. Then I flew to Uppsala Sweden where we record all guitars, bass and vocals at Ronnie´s studio Bomb Shelter studio. And in the end Ronnie Björnström from The Mixroom did the mix and master in Umeå Sweden. The album sound very rich since Ronnie he is a master of mixing metal albums and he is working with an analog mixer and that adds a lot of warmth and harmonics in the overall sound. Me and Magnus worked a year prior to the recordings and we have met several times and we wrote the most of the songs together,, then Ronnie came and did all his vocals and wrote all the lyrics. Its always great to have to collaborate with Ronnie and Magnus and make our ideas a reality into songs that we love, and our main factor is that the material we have in the end is damn good.

SofN: I know it is probably too early to tell, but which songs on this album you believe might become classics of the future of Nightrage?

I think that “Embrace The Nightrage and “Wolf To Man” Title track have that kind of potential, I love all songs on the album and there´s not a missing link in there. But it´s better to leave that for the fans to decide, its always up to them and hope they will find a lot of the songs on the new album that they will keep as favorites, we at the same time feel very excited with all the songs and we cant wait for the fans to listen to the new album and share our music with them.

SofN: What would you like to achieve with this new record? What would you like to see when you turn your head back next time you enter the studio?

I want that the fans will definitely find us here after so many years of releasing albums I would love that the fans giving us a chance with this album and support us and come to the shows and embrace our music. I think for me this album is a new era of the band, after so many years I feel like we are home and we did an album that we are all on the same page and we all did our best to compose and record. So when the next time comes and we are starting recording the next album I would like to remember this album as a new start of something really cool and new for us.

SofN: For this new album you incorporated two new members to form a whole new rhythm section for the band: Francisco Escalona in the bass and Dino George Stamoglou on drums. What do you think their performance has given to the album? Do you think this was a key factor on why the sound is so aggressive?

Franco recorded all his bass parts and did an amazing work, since this is his first ever recording with Nightrage, he is playing his bass lines along with the drums and he has really great ideas for parts, also I love his sound and how he incorporated this to the Nightrage songs. Dino played with us on the recent Voivod tour and did an amazing performance on the live shows, and he is such a cool kid and great drummer and everybody seemed to love him. We recorded 4 rhythm guitars me and Magnus and we had a harsh tone to the bass that along with the drums creates this wall of sound that we wanted to create, we weren´t that satisfied to be honest with the last 2 albums and how they turned out sound wise, so this time we were focused to make the sound and the playing really brutal and kudos also to Ronnie Björnström for helping us getting there, plus the fact that Ronnie Nyman did an amazing work with these different layers of vocals and that added even more to the aggressive sound we were aiming for.

SofN: Talking about this: why do you think there has been so many line up changes in Nightrage? Would you like to have a stable line up or it is not something important for you?

It´s a matter of priorities and choices to be honest for the most of the people that been in the band, also the fact that we are small band and there´s not a lot of money around so people get disappointed or loose interest, we wish for them the very best and we have a fantastic line up now with the addition of Franco and Dino and the power creative trinity that is me, Ronnie, and Magnus, stays the same and works really well. And hope that line up will stay forever.

SofN: You started Nightrage in 2000, and in those almost twenty years many changes have gone on within the band: you relocated from Greece to Sweden, quite a few musicians came in and out, you changed labels from Century Media to Lifeforce to now Despotz Records, you published eight albums,… As the founder and leader of the band, in all this time I guess you had to take a lot of important decisions. With the perspective of time, which ones are you most proud of, which ones you believe you should have taken early and with which ones do you think you screwed up?

Yes time flies you are so right and looking back I realize that i haven’t changed a bit always stayed true to my myself and my ideals. So many albums and so many stories, so many ups and downs, so many hardships that I had to face and move on and continue what I always wanted to do with the music that I love to play. I wish that we had this line up we have now from the very beginning and I´m sure that we would have probably a different luck, we are very dedicated people when it comes to play with Nightrage. If I speak for myself I leave and breath this band 24/7 365 days a year, and I always feel inspired and have something to do.

I think that I was a bit naive when I had to choose the right members back in the day, that in the end they ended up being really the wrong ones hahahha most of them really, and these things happened because of the reasons that I explained before, also the fact that I was really believing in bullshit that people were telling me through all these years that happened to be lies and nothing else. So I would like me to be (if I can go back a bit) more tough with my decisions and not that naive, not be a yes man to everybody that were telling me that they loving the band and want to get in. But I guess everything happens for a reason and you learn from your experience, and your fuck ups it´s never too late actually to get better.

SofN: When we first opened our magazine about a year and a half ago, the first article we ever published was precisely a review of your previous album, The Venomous (which for the record, I rated with a 9 because I liked it very much and found catchy as hell). Both that time and every time since, I remember that in social media you reacted positively to any post we’ve ever done about Nightrage, which is not something that usual in international bands. Do you keep on top of the social networks of the band? How important do you think they are these days?

Yeah I´m sort of a manager for this band to be honest, from answering emails, doing social media updates, doing Interviews, talking to business people, listening to the albums, checking all the details about credits, talking to endorsement companies, it´s really lots of work and because I have the time and the will I´m the one that takes care of that all the time. But I also to be honest I like it too so there´s no complaints.

So to answer your question i´m very active on social media and I always trying to follow the news that concerning the band. I don´t know how other bands work but I even get credit for that from my band mates that they feel very happy that I´m doing all this work and they told me that I´m born for this hahahaha.

SofN: In recent years I feel that the center of gravity of melodic death metal has moved from Sweden to Finland. Sweden is still full of great bands, of course, but the amount of creativity within the genre in Finland these days is unmatched in my opinion. Do you agree? What new bands you find more exciting from both scenes?

Yeah that kinda true I feel the melodic death metal that once used to be glorious now it changed to be something completely different in Sweden and more poppier unfortunately. Not that pop is something bad but I guess people they are tired to play or called themselves a metal band I don`t know? I like Omnium Gatherum from Finland cool band for sure. I still like At The Gates even though I still love the Slaughter album but they have created an amazing legacy, and I wish that Dissection would be still around and doing albums. A lot of people telling us that we are the ones of the few bands that carrying the torch of melodic death metal when it comes to honesty and metal sound. I take it as a compliment really and I want that more people that listening to these bands to turn their head to us as well, they might find something they like, and I can assure you we are not a nostalgia band, but what we do it´s very honest and 100% metal.

SofN: Just a few months ago we could see you opening for Voivod, a band that, on paper, doesn’t have much to do with you. How did you get to be part of that tour in the first place and how did it go?

Yeah we are really happy to tour with Voivod, they are great people and super nice, we were so surprised that they liked us a lot as a band and they were always come and listening to us. Thanks to Stephen Moss from Artery Global that fix that tour for us and we had the best of time.

SofN: What are your touring plans for the first few months of the year? Will we see you playing in Spain again soon?

Yeah we really wanna get back in Spain always a great place for us, as we speak we are planning to do a Greek tour on April and then a Euro tour in May, we had confirmed our first headline appearance now in the UK at Warhorns festival and we are planning to do more UK/Euro dates after that plus some more festivals. We really want to tour as much as we can and we feel that Artery Global would help us to tour more with the new album.

SofN: If you could put up a tour with any four bands you wanted, being Nightrage one of them, which ones would you choose and why?

I would say, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Nightrage hahahahaha dream on dream on.
