Entrevista a Mars Red Sky: ‘La música rock en Barcelona está menos confinada al underground’

SofN: Buenos días, en primer lugar, me gustaría agradecerles la oportunidad de hacer esta entrevista. Gracias, chicos. Tal vez algunos de nuestros lectores no conozcan mucho a Mars Red Sky, ¿podrías poner en contexto la banda y su propuesta musical?

Julien: Somos un trío de Burdeos / Angulema (Francia) que toca una forma de doom rock pesado, psicodélico y melódico desde el espacio y más allá.

SofN: La banda se formó en 2007, después de tres álbumes asombrosos, algunos EP’s y más de doce años, sois la misma gente que comenzó la banda. ¿Podéis explicarnos cómo es la convivencia entre vosotros?

Nos conocíamos desde hace mucho tiempo, incluso antes de tocar juntos. Jimmy y yo hemos recorrido juntos un largo camino, más de veinte años. Conocimos a Mat a través de varias bandas de nuestra área (Headcases, Glasnost…). En realidad, Mat se hizo cargo de la batería después de que Benoit (el baterista del primer álbum) lo dejara. Eso fue hace siete años y la banda comenzó en 2009. Hemos pasado mucho tiempo de gira, nos conocemos muy bien, hay un vínculo muy fuerte entre nosotros. Puede haber largos períodos de tiempo en los que no nos vemos, pero cuando volvemos a estar juntos se respira como si fuese una reunión familiar, nos gusta pasar tiempo juntos, tocar música y viajar.

SofN: Sois tres músicos y me imagino que a veces puede ser complicado llegar a entenderos. ¿Cómo funciona el proceso creativo en Mars Red Sky?

La mayoría de las veces traigo el embrión de una canción (un par de riffs y melodías vocales, un verso y un estribillo…) y se los muestro a Jim y Mat. Si les gusta, tocamos esos riffs hasta que logramos el ritmo adecuado, hasta que logramos estar satisfechos con el sentimiento general y el ritmo, luego comenzaremos a jugar con él, agregaremos nuevas partes, improvisamos y eventualmente lo estructuramos todo.

Otras veces, Mat o Jimmy traen un riff y ocurre el mismo proceso, y otras veces todo viene de los tres haciendo jams y algo genial sale de ellal. Uno de nosotros se detiene y grita «¡¡Oye, eso suena muy bien!!» y, por lo general, eso será el núcleo de una nueva canción.

SofN: Estamos espectantes ante un nuevo trabajo en formato LP, vuestros últimos trabajos fueron dos increíbles EP’s llamados Providence (2016) y Myramyd (2017), ambos fueron trabajos inteligentes y muy bien preparados. ¿Oodemos hablar sobre la madurez compositiva o es una cuestión de evolución natural?

¡Muchas gracias! Yo diría que es más bien una cuestión de evolución natural; nos conocemos mejor cada año y en cada grabación, por lo que es natural que nuestra conexión musical sea más profunda y aguda también. No tenemos miedo de explorar diferentes vías, sea cual sea la etiqueta musical que le pongas. Ese tipo de libertad también es muy importante, es bueno tener en cuenta que solo estamos tocando música, no tocando un tipo específico de música.

SofN: ¿Qué podemos esperar de 2019? ¿Estáis trabajando en un nuevo álbum? Si la respuesta es «Sí», ¿qué se puede explicar al respecto? ¡Necesitamos algunos spoilers!

De hecho estamos trabajando en un nuevo álbum, ¡estamos muy contentos y emocionados por ello! La mitad del álbum ya está grabado, y la otra mitad se hará en abril. Hemos empezado a tocar algunas de estas nuevas canciones, un par de ellas son parte de nuestra lista de canciones regular ahora.

SofN: En abril, Mars Red Sky vendrá a Barcelona para tocar en el Riff Ritual Festival Vol. 5, un festival increíble con grandes bandas. ¿Qué tipo de show viviremos allí?

¡Supongo que tocaremos un par de canciones nuevas! Estamos muy contentos con ese concierto, nos encantan este tipo de festivales, podremos ver algunas grandes bandas en vivo y ser parte de ellos es super emocionante.

SofN: Será vuestro quinto concierto aquí, en Barcelona. Aquí hay una fuerte base de fans de stoner. Un par de preguntas al respecto. ¿Cuál es la relación entre la banda y la ciudad? ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre el público barcelonés y español?

Nos encanta tocar en España, parece que la música rock en general está menos confinada al underground, y la gente es más amigable y divertida.

SofN: ¿Qué bandas influyeron más en el sonido de Mars Red Sky?

Al principio de la banda teníamos eso en mente: ¡Witch (la banda con J Mascis en la batería! Somos grandes fans de Dinosaur Jr) y todas esas grandes bandasTee Pee Records (Entranced, Graveyard), Electric Wizard, Sleep (obviamente…), Dead Meadow, Bardo Pond, My Bloody Valentine, Melvins, así como los viejos clásicos como Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, etc.

SofN: Francia tiene una increíble escena de stoner (y rock, y metal, y electrónica …). ¿Nos podéis contar cuál es el secreto? ¿Ayuda el Estado o alguna organización cultural?

Mat: El Estado ayuda a algunos de los lugares en el país. Pero en mi opinión, la creatividad de una banda o una escena en general no está relacionada con el hecho de que un estado le dé dinero. Incluso diría que cuanto menos te ayude el gobierno, más creativo y auténtico será.

SoN: Good morning, first of all, I would like I want to thank you for the oportunity to do this interview ! Thanks, guys. Maybe some of our readers doesn’t know about Mars Red Sky. Ccould you put in context the band and its musical proposal? 

Julien: We’re a trio from Bordeaux / Angoulême (France) playing a form of heavy, psychedelic, melodic doomy rock from space and beyond

SofN: The band was formed in 2007, after three amazing albums, some EPS and more than twelve years, you’re the same people that started this band. Can you explain how is the coexitence between you?

Julien: We’d known each other for a long time before even playing together. Jimmy and I go a long way, over twenty years, and we knew Mat from several great bands from the area (Headcases, Glasnost…). He actually took over after Benoit (the drummer on the first album) quit. That was seven years ago though, and the band actually sarted in 2009.. We’ve spent so much time on tour, we know each other so well, there’s a really strong bond between us. There can be long streches of time where we don’t see each other but when we get back together it feels like a family reunion, we like spending time together, playing music and traveling around.

SofN: You are three musicians and I imagine that sometimes can be complicated to get in agreement. How does the creative process work in Mars Red Sky ?

Julien: Most of the time I’ll bring an embryo of a song (a couple of riffs and vocal melodies, a verse and a chorus..) and show it to Jim and Mat. If they like it we’ll play those riffs until we get the tempo right, until we’re satisfied with the overall feeling and groove, then we start to play around with it, add new parts, jam on and eventually structure the whole thing.

Sometimes Mat or Jimmy will bring in a riff and the same process happens, and sometimes it all comes from the three of us jaming and something cool comes out of it. One of us will stop and shout “Hey, that just sounded really good !!” and usually that will be the core of a new song or instrumental.

SofN: We are waiting for a new LP, your lasts works were two amazing EP’s called “Providence” (2016) and “Myramyd” (2017), both were intelligent works, very well-prepared, May we talk about compositional maturity or is it just a matter of natural evolution? 

Julien: Well thank you ! I’d say it’s more a matter of natural evolution indeed; we know each other better with every year and every recording, so it’s only natural that our musical connection gets deeper and sharper as well. We’re not afraid of exploring different avenues, whatever musical tag you’d put on it. That sort of freedom is also really important, it’s haelthy to keep in mind that we’re just playing music, not playind a specific kind of music.

SofN: What can we expect in 2019? Are you working on a new album ? If so, what can you explain about it? We need some spoilers!

Julien: we are indeed working on a new album, we’re very happy and excited about it! Half of the album is already recorded, and the other half will be done in April. We’ve started playing some of these new songs, a couple of them are part of our regular setlist now.

SofN: In later april, Mars Red Sky will come to Barcelona to play in Riff Ritual Festival Vol. 5, an amazing festival with huge bands. What kind of show of your band we will live there ?

Julien: I guess we’ll play a couple of new songs ! We’re very happy about that concert, we love these kind of festivals, we get to see some great bands live and being part of it is super exciting

SofN: It will be your fifth show here, in Barcelona. Here there is a strong stoner fan base. A couple of questions about it.What is the relation between the band and the city ? What is your opinion about the Barcelona and Spanish public ?

Julien: We love playing in Spain, it feels like rock music in general is less confined to the underground there, and people are more friendly and fun !

SofN: Which bands infuenced on Mars Red Sky sound ?

Julien: At the beginning of the band we had those in mind: Witch (the band with J Mascis on drums! We’re huge Dinosaur Jr fans) and all those great bands on Tee Pee records (Entranced, Graveyard), Electric Wizard, Sleep (obviously..), Dead Meadow, Bardo Pond, My Bloody Valentine, Melvins as well as the good old classics like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson etc..

SofN: France have got an amazing stoner (and rock, and metal, and electronic…) scene, can you tell us the secret about it ? Does the council, the state or some cultural organization, help about it ?

Mat : The state helps some of the venues in the country. But in my opinion the creativity of a band or a scene in general is not related with the fact that a state gives money to it. I would even say, the less the government helps it, the more it’s creative and authentic !
