Entrevista a Mélanie Lesage, vocalista de Damantra: ‘Tenemos las mismas vibraciones de los 70 pero con un sonido más moderno’

Buenos días, Mélanie, es un placer poder charlar contigo. En primer lugar quiero felicitar a la banda por el nuevo single. ¿Cómo estáis?

Hola, Beto. Muchas gracias. Estamos muy bien. Ahora mismo estamos los cuatro en la furgoneta, volviendo a casa después de un concierto.

La humanidad ha experimentado recientemente un shock muy importante. Crisis mundial, Covid, guerra… ¿Cómo os ha afectado a nivel personal y de grupo?

Bueno… nos hizo darnos cuenta de que la vida puede ser más corta de lo esperado. Nos ayudó a decidir dejar nuestros trabajos para convertirnos en músicos a tiempo completo.

La pandemia y sus daños colaterales han afectado mucho a la industria musical. Bandas, promotores, medios de comunicación… todos hemos sufrido para superar estos dos largos años. Vuestro debut, Jekyll and Hyde, salió a la venta unos meses antes de que nos encerraran. ¿Cómo vivisteis la cancelación de los conciertos y cómo adaptasteis vuestro futuro inmediato a la realidad que vivimos?

Tuvimos que adaptarnos, ¡como todo el mundo! ¿No podemos salir a tocar? ¡Siempre podemos trabajar en otros temas! Aprovechamos el tiempo disponible para trabajar en nuestra dirección artística. Desde el Covid y la llegada de Rémi como nuestro nuevo batería, queríamos mostrar más nuestra inspiración de los 70, así que tuvimos que trabajar en nuestros visuales y arreglos musicales.

Seguro que hay algún lector despistado que aún no os conoce, para ponerles en contexto y facilitarles la lectura de la entrevista, ¿cuáles son vuestras principales influencias y de qué bandas actuales os nutrís en vuestro día a día?

¿Qué? ¿Algunos de vuestros lectores no nos conocen?

Hablando más en serio, somos grandes fans de Rival Sons, Greta Van Fleet y Blues Pills. Creo que tenemos las mismas vibraciones de los 70 pero con un sonido más moderno.

Os formasteis en 2020. A pesar de la calidad de vuestro trabajo, de momento no tenéis un contrato discográfico. ¿Cómo compagináis vuestro trabajo/vida personal con todo el trabajo de Damantra (componer, grabar, merch, vídeos…)?

Ahora todos somos músicos a tiempo completo, así que nuestro trabajo diario es Damantra. Está la composición, la grabación, el merchandising, los vídeos, pero también la gestión de las redes sociales y todas las cosas administrativas. Es mucho trabajo, pero desde 2022 tenemos gente que nos ayuda en muchos aspectos, así que cada vez tenemos más tiempo libre. A todos nos apasiona la música y estamos muy ilusionados por ver crecer nuestro proyecto a lo largo del camino. Así que solemos dedicar nuestra vida a esta actividad, pero nos aseguramos de guardar tiempo para salir con nuestros amigos y familia, ir a conciertos, etc.

¿Cómo funciona la fase de creación / composición en la banda?

La mayoría de las veces Virgile (el guitarrista) sugiere un riff y/o acordes para una canción, yo intento ponerle melodía, y luego nos presentamos en el ensayo con estas ideas. Luego Robin (bajo) y Rémi (batería) aportan sus propias ideas. Acabamos recreando la canción juntos. Es como meter todas las ideas en una caja, agitarla con fuerza y ver cómo sale la canción de Damantra.

Hace unos días publicasteis «Keep On», una canción nueva y vibrante. ¿Estáis preparando vuestro segundo álbum? ¿Qué nos podéis contar al respecto?

Efectivamente, ¡»Keep On» es el primer single de nuestro nuevo EP! Estamos muy emocionados por lanzarlo en mayo. Estamos súper orgullosos de sus 5 temas. Han sido escritas en el momento en el que todos tomamos la decisión de dejar nuestros trabajos, así que las canciones están impregnadas de este espíritu de emancipación que nos encarnaba en aquel momento.

En cuanto al sonido, este EP tiene esa energía salvaje directamente sacada de los 70, a la manera de Rival Sons y Blues Pills. Te proporciona justo lo que necesitas cuando vas a hacer grandes cambios en tu vida: a la vez comodidad y patadas en el culo.

Y no sólo en Francia estáis consiguiendo destacar, en poco tiempo habéis recorrido media Europa… Nos gustaría que nos contaras cómo has vivido esas giras, los nervios, los viajes, los idiomas, la ilusión… ¿Qué puedes decir al respecto?

¡Media Europa es un poco exagerado! Jajaja. ¡Pero la verdad es que fue bastante bien! Para cada uno de nosotros era nuestra gira más grande hasta el momento, así que la vivimos con la ilusión de lo nuevo. Fue una experiencia realmente buena. Los idiomas fueron todo un reto, pero siempre había alguien capaz de traducir para toda la banda, así que no hubo problema (Robin habla español con fluidez y todos hablamos inglés).

Durante la gira española, Robin nos enseñó a Virgile y a mí las nociones básicas de español en la furgoneta. Fue divertido e hizo que el tiempo en la carretera pareciera más corto. Estábamos muy cómodos en la furgoneta y las largas horas de viaje no fueron tan molestas como esperábamos. Los nervios aguantaron a pesar del cansancio y eso nos alegró mucho jaja. La convivencia en la carretera es muy específica, y todos tuvimos que encontrar nuestros marcadores, pero creo que lo conseguimos. Estamos muy contentos de volver a salir de gira.

Estar en una banda y hacer tantas giras no es sólo salir al escenario y tocar hora y media con tus compañeros y «adiós muy buenas». Al final, tus compañeros son como tu familia, o tu pareja, compartís escenario, viajes, experiencias, emociones… ¿Cuál es el mejor recuerdo de estos años «en familia»?

El mejor recuerdo probablemente sería después de un concierto en La Rochelle (Francia). No teníamos concierto al día siguiente y nos limitamos a pasar el rato con el equipo del local, bebiendo más de la cuenta y haciendo tonterías que hacían reír a todo el mundo.

Por el contrario, las complicaciones siempre aparecen en estas relaciones personales, en las giras… ¿Has tenido alguna vez esa sensación de mandar todo a la mierda, de pensar que lo que haces no sirve para nada? Y si es así, ¿cuándo?

Hasta ahora no me ha pasado, ¡quizá porque siempre hay alguien en el equipo que tiene energía suficiente para animar a todo el mundo si hace falta!

¿Qué podemos esperar de Damantra en el futuro?

Nuestro EP saldrá a finales de mayo, ¡así que podéis esperar que hagamos tantas giras como podamos!

La vida nos anima a soñar, a cumplir los objetivos que tenemos en mente. ¿Qué sueños realistas tiene todavía Damantra que queráis cumplir?

Seguir de gira. Más tiempo, más lejos, más fuerte.

Good morning Mélanie, it’s a pleasure to be able to chat with you. First of all I want to congratulate the band for the new single. How are you? 

Hi Beto ! Thank you very much ! We’re fine ! We are currently all four of us in the van, going back home after a show. 

Humanity has recently experienced a very important shock. World crisis, covid, war… How has it affected you on a personal / band level?

Well… it made us realise that life can be shorter than expected. It helped us deciding to quit our jobs in order to become full time musicians.

The pandemic and its collateral damage has affected the music industry a lot. Bands, promoters, media… we have all suffered to overcome these two long years.  Your debut, ”Jekyll and Hyde» was released a few months before we were locked up. How did you experience the cancellation of concerts and how did you adapt your immediate future to the reality we live in? 

We had to adapt, like everyone! We can’t go out and play ? We can always work on other topics ! We used the time available to work on our artistic direction. Since Covid and the arrival of Rémi as our new drummer, we wanted to show up more our 70s inspiration so we had to work on our visuals and musical arrangements. 

Surely there are some confused readers who don’t know you yet, to put them in context and make it easier for them to read the interview, what are your main influences and which current bands can nourish your day to day life?

What ?? Some of your readers don’t know us ??

More seriously, we are big fans of Rival Sons, Greta Van Fleet and Blues Pills. I think we got the same 70’s vibes but with a more modern sound. 

You formed in 2020. Despite the quality of your work, you don’t have a record deal at the moment. How do you combine your work / personal life with all the work of Damantra (composing, recording, merch, videos…)?

We’re all full time musicians now, so our day to day work is actually Damantra! There’s the composing, recording, merch, videos, but also the social media management, and all the admin stuff. It’s quite a lot of work but since 2022 we have people helping us on many aspects so we get to have more and more free time. We’re all passionate about music, and very excited to see our project grow along the road. So we tend to devote our life to this activity, but we make sure to save time to hang out with our friends and family, go to concerts… 

How does the creation / composition phase work in the band?

Most of the time Virgile (the guitarist) suggests a riff and/or chords for a song, I try to put a melody on that, and then we show up in rehearsal with these ideas. Then Robin (bass) and Rémi (drums) bring their own ideas. We end up re-creating the song together. It’s like putting all the ideas in a box, shaking hard and seeing the Damantra song coming out.

A few days ago you released «Keep On», a new and vibrant song. Are you preparing your second album? what can you tell us about it?

Indeed, «Keep On» is the first single of our new EP! We’re very excited to release it in May. We are super proud of its five tracks. They have been written at the time where we all took the decision to quit our jobs, so the songs are stamped with this spirit of emancipation that embodied us at that time. 

In terms of sound, this EP has this wild energy directly sourced from the 70’s in the manner of Rival Sons and Blues Pills. It provides you just what you need when you’re going for big changes in your life: both comfort and ass kicking. 

And not only in France are you managing to stand out, in a short time you have traveled half of Europe… We would like you to tell us how you lived those tours, the nerves, the trips, the languages, the illusion… what can you say about it?

Half Europe is a bit overplayed haha, but it went actually quite well! For each of us it was our biggest tour so far, so we lived it with the excitement of what’s new. It was a really good experience! The languages were quite a challenge but there was always someone able to do the translation for the whole band so it was okay (Robin is fluent in Spanish, and we all speak English). During the Spanish tour Robin was teaching Virgile and I the basics of Spanish in the van. It was fun, and made the time on the road seem shorter. We were very comfy in the van, and the long hours on the road were not such a pain as we expected! The nerves held on despite the tiredness and we were very happy about that haha. Living together on the road is very specific, and we all had to find our markers but I believe that we made it. We’re super excited to go touring again!

Being in a band and touring so much is not just going on stage and playing an hour and a half with your teammates and «goodbye very good». In the end, your colleagues are like your family, or your partner, you share the stage, travel, experiences, emotions… What is the best memory of these years «as a family”?

The best memory would probably be after a show in La Rochelle (France). We had no concert the day after, and we just hung out with the venue’s team, drinking way more than we should have, and doing stupid stuff that made everyone laugh. 

On the contrary, complications always appear in these personal relationships, on tours … have you ever had that feeling of sending all the crap, of thinking that what you do is useless? And if so, when?

It did not happen so far, maybe because there’s always someone in the team that has enough energy to cheer everyone up if needed !

What can we expect from Damantra in the future?

We have our EP coming out at the end of May, so you can expect us to tour as much as we can ! 

Life encourages us to dream, to meet goals that we have in mind. What realistic dreams does Damantra still have that you want to fulfill?

Keep on touring! Longer, farther, stronger.
