Entrevista a Michael y Bodo, bajista y batería de Jaded Heart: ‘No tenemos idea de cuándo y dónde podremos hacer una gira de nuevo’

Hola Michael, gracias por pasar un tiempo con nosotros. ¿Cómo estás?

M: Estoy bien, muchas gracias. A pesar de que estamos atravesando algunos momentos locos, estoy tratando de mantener una actitud positiva.

Stand Your Ground (2020) está a punto de ver la luz. Mi primera impresión es que es un disco mucho más heavy que los anteriores, no solo por la falta de teclados. ¿También lo veis o soy yo?

B: Estoy de acuerdo. Veo esto como una continuación de lo que estamos haciendo. Con la adición de una segunda guitarra, nuestra música se hizo más pesada. Ya puedes escucharlo en Guilty by Design (2016) y Devil’s Gift (2018), así que esta fue una evolución lógica para nosotros. Queríamos que fuera un poco más crudo y contundente.

Como dije antes, este es el primer álbum sin teclados. ¿Cómo llegasteis a esta decisión?

B: No hemos tenido un teclista en la banda durante mucho tiempo. Para tocar las canciones en vivo siempre tenemos que usar una pista de acompañamiento con el teclado encima. Sentimos que era hora de escribir un álbum sin teclados, ya que no hay teclista en Jaded Heart y queríamos hacer un mejor uso de la segunda guitarra. Es más auténtico ahora y retrata mejor quiénes somos como banda en esta etapa. Todos estábamos a favor.

M: Sí, en lugar de colorear el álbum con algunas teclas pensamos “¿por qué no añadir aún más guitarras al álbum?”. El álbum suena más orgánico y sencillo.

Hablemos de los instrumentos. Las guitarras suenan mucho más agresivas que antes, y aún así suenan melódicas. A mí, personalmente, me gusta mucho. ¿Cómo surgió? ¿Era algo que querías (composición), fue la producción?

B: La forma en que están escritas las canciones y la energía que tienen, sentimos que las guitarras necesitaban sonar más heavies y agresivas. Simplemente se adapta mucho mejor al estilo actual de Jaded Heart. Cuando escuchamos las demos, todos dijeron que este álbum necesitaba un sonido de guitarra más agresivo y cortante para entregar correctamente la sensación correcta para esas canciones.

Si hablamos de Bodo y su batería, y como baterista retirado, veo una gran mejora. Hay mucha más energía, incluso un bonito doble bombo. ¿Será así en el futuro?

B: No lo llamaría necesariamente una mejora. Si escuchas a otras bandas para las que toco notarás que mi estilo es muy técnico y enfocado al doble bombo. Sin embargo, una banda como Jaded Heart tenía un sonido y un enfoque diferente en el momento en que me uní, por lo que la batería era un poco más básica y «amigable con la canción». Una buena canción de rock/metal realmente no necesita ser interpretada por la batería. Ahora que hemos evolucionado hacia una banda más pesada, tenía sentido incorporar también un enfoque más metal a la batería, razón por la cual escuchas más doble bombo y algunos rellenos «elegantes». Estoy bastante seguro de que continuaremos construyendo sobre esto.

La voz de Johan también parece más heavy, menos melódica. ¿Está cambiando su voz?

B: Creo que hay múltiples factores que contribuyen a esto. Todos estamos envejeciendo, así que, naturalmente, su voz cambia. Es posible que pierda un poco de su rango superior y transponga canciones antiguas para que funcionen, pero también desarrollará nuevas fortalezas. Creo que Johan se siente muy cómodo con lo que está haciendo ahora, encontró su estilo característico. En este álbum su voz es definitivamente más pesada y cabreada porque el material es más pesado, algunas de las letras están enojadas … Creo que también refleja los tiempos oscuros que todos estamos atravesando ahora mismo.

M: Definitivamente su voz suena un poco más enojada. Antes de que comenzara a grabar su voz, en abril, sufrió de Covid durante tres semanas. Estaba un poco frustrado y preocupado por si el virus pudiera haber dañado su voz. Gracias a Dios, su voz no cambió después de su recuperación.

Solo podría elegir una canción favorita si me apuntasen con un arma. Solo entonces diría “Stand Your Ground”, el primer single. ¿Cuál es vuestra favorita? ¿Y la que creéis que representa mejor el nuevo estilo?

B: Es REALMENTE difícil de responder … hay una gran diversidad en las canciones, así que no puedo señalar una sola canción. Realmente creo que este álbum no tiene relleno. Creo que una buena representación del nuevo estilo más pesado es el segundo single  «Reap What You Sow».

M: Realmente amo todas las canciones y «Stand Your Ground» salió muy bien. Otra canción que disfruto es «Inside a Hurricane». Creo que es una buena mezcla entre el Jaded Heart de la vieja escuela y el estilo actual.

Ahora preguntaría sobre giras, pero supongo que no hay nada seguro, todavía, debido al Covid, ¿verdad?

B: Desafortunadamente, tienes razón. Teníamos un programa de lanzamiento reservado y todo estaba confirmado, vuelos, etc … luego los números en Alemania empeoraron y todos los eventos están parados, así que tuvimos que posponer nuevamente… No tenemos idea de cuándo y dónde podremos hacer una gira de nuevo. Es un gran lío.

Hablando del Covid, ¿cómo lo ha vivido una banda/músico? ¿Crees que 2021 será un año de gira nuevamente, o tendremos que esperar aún más?

B: Creo que es casi imposible predecir nada. Personalmente, no creo que veamos espectáculos más grandes en 2021. Quizás algunos eventos locales más pequeños, con 100-150 personas. Realmente no creo que los grandes festivales como Wacken vayan a poder hacerse en 2021, se ve bastante sombrío. Todo lo que podemos hacer es esperar y esperar lo mejor. Estos son tiempos muy difíciles para toda la industria de eventos y mucha más gente perderá su trabajo.

Johnny Lindberg ha estado involucrado en la escritura lírica del álbum. ¿Por qué tener una persona externa que los escriba?

M: Johnny es un viejo amigo de la banda y sabemos que es un letrista muy talentoso. Solo pensamos en darle una oportunidad, ya que de vez en cuando ofrecía excelentes ideas para las letras. Nos gusta involucrar a los amigos y nos gustó la idea de obtener una opinión diferente.

¿Hay algún tipo de mensaje secreto en las letras?

M: Para nada. No somos ese tipo de banda. Para nosotros es importante que una letra o una rima encaje en una canción.

Erik Martensson de Eclipse también ha estado involucrado en la mezcla y masterización. ¿Cómo ha ido trabajando con él?

M: Trabajamos con Erik desde 2005, cuando lanzamos Helluva Time y siempre ha sido un placer trabajar con él. Johan, Peter y Erik fueron compañeros de banda en el pasado y, por lo tanto, tenemos una gran amistad con Erik. Tiene mucho talento.

Desde que me conocí la banda, en la segunda mitad de la década de 2000, la formación ha estado inamovible. Parece que los miembros de otras bandas van y vienen, entonces, ¿qué tiene Jaded Heart para seguir ahí después de tantos años?

B: ¡Siempre nos aseguramos de divertirnos! Si lo tratamos demasiado como un negocio o un trabajo, entonces le quitas la diversión. Tenemos una gran química en la banda ya que hemos estado tocando juntos durante mucho tiempo. Todo simplemente hace click y todos estamos en la misma página. Si compartes una visión común de lo que crees que debería ser y cómo debería sonar la banda, todo es mucho más fácil y natural. ¡Simplemente nos encanta estar juntos en el escenario y tocar música! Eso es todo.

Hello Michael, thanks for spending some time with us. How are you?

M: ! I am good. Thank you very much. Even though we are getting trough some “crazy times” at the moment I am trying to stay positive.

Stand Your Ground (2020) is about to see the light. My first impression is that is a much heavier album than the previous ones, not only because of the keyboards. Do you also see it or is it me?

B: I would agree. I see this as a continuation of what we are doing. With the addition of a second guitar our music got heavier. You can already hear it on Guilty by Design (2016) and Devil’s Gift (2018) so this was a logical evolution for us. We wanted it to be a little more raw and punchy.

As said before, this is the first album without keyboards. How did you all come to this decision?

B: We haven’t had a keyboarder in the band for a very long time. To play the songs live we always have to use a backing track with the keyboard on it. We felt it was time to write an album without keyboards since there is no keyboard player in Jaded Heart and we wanted to make better use of the second guitar. It’s more authentic now and better portrays who we are as a band at this stage. We were all in favor of it.

M: Yes, instead of coloring the album with some keys we thought why shouldn´t we add even more guitars to the album. The album sounds more organic and stripped down.

Let’s talk about the instruments. The guitars sound much more aggressive than before, and yet still sound melodic. I, personally, like it a lot. How did it come? Was it something you wanted (so, composition), was it production?

B: The way the songs are written and the energy they have we felt the guitars needed to sound heavier and more aggressive. It just fits the current Jaded Heart style a lot better. When we all listened to the demos, everyone said that this album needs a more aggressive and cutting guitar sound to properly deliver the right feeling for those songs.

If we talk about Bodo and his drumming, and as a retired drummer, I see a big improvement. There’s much more energy, even some lovely double bass drum. Will it be like this in the future?

B: I wouldn’t necessarily call it an improvement. If you listen to other bands that I play for you will notice that my style is very technical and doublebass focused. However, a band like Jaded Heart had a different sound and approach at the time I joined, so the drumming was a little more basic and “song friendly”. A good rock/metal song doesn’t really need “overplaying” by the drums. Now that we have evolved into a heavier band it just made sense to incorporate a more „metal“ approach to the drums as well which is why you hear more double bass and some “fancy” fills. I am pretty sure we will continue to build on this.

Johan’s voice also seems heavier, less melodic. Is his voice changing?

B: I think there are multiple factors that contribute to this. We are all getting older so naturally your voice changes. You might lose a little of your upper range and transpose older songs to make them work, but you also develop new strengths. I think Johan feels very comfortable with what he is doing now, he found his signature style. On this album his vocals are definitely heavier and more “pissed off” because the material is heavier, some of the lyrics are angry.. I think it also reflects the dark times we are all going through right now.

M: Definitely his voice sounds a bit more angry. Before he started to track his vocals in April he suffered form Covid for 3 weeks.  He was a bit frustrated and worried that the Corona virus might damage his voice. Thank god, his voice didn´t change after he recovered.

I only could pick a favorite song if I was pointed with a gun. Only then I would say “Stand Your Ground”, the first single. What’s your favorite? And the one you think better represents the new style?

B: That is a REALLY hard one to answer.. there is a great diversity in the songs so I can’t just point one song out. I truly think this album is “all killer no filler”. I think a good representation of the new, heavier style is the second single “Reap What You Sow”.

M: I really love all the songs and “Stand Your Ground” came out really good. Another song which I enjoy is “Inside a Hurricane”. I think it is a good mixture between old school Jaded Heart and the current style.

Now I would ask about tours, but I guess there’s nothing sure, yet, due to the Covid, right?

B: Unfortunately you are right.. we had a release show booked and everything was confirmed, flights, etc… then the numbers in Germany got worse again and all events are now off, so we had to postpone again… we have no idea when and where we can tour again.. it’s a big mess.

Talking about the Covid, how has lived it a band/musician? Do you think 2021 will be a year to tour again, or will we have to wait even more?

B: I think it’s almost impossible to predict anything. Personally, I don’t believe we will be seeing any bigger shows in 2021. Maybe some smaller local events with 100-150 people. I really don’t think big festivals like Wacken will be a thing in 2021..it’s looking pretty grim. All we can do is wait and hope for the best. These are very trying times for the entire event industry and a lot more people will lose their jobs.

Johnny Lindberg has been involved in the lyric writing of the album. Why have an external person to do write them?

M: Johnny is a longtime friend of the band and we know that he is a very talented lyricist. We just thought to give him a chance since he was delivering excellent lyric ideas once in a while. We like to get friends involved and we liked the idea of getting a different input.

Is there any kind of secret messages in the lyrics?

M: Not at all. We are not that kind of band. For us it´s important that a lyric or a rhyme fits to a song.

Erik Martensson from Eclipse has also been involved in mixing and mastering. How has been working with him?

M: We are working with Erik since 2005, when we released Helluva Time and it is always been a pleasure to be working with him. Johan, Peter and Erik were band mates in the past and therefore we have a great friendship with Erik. He is super talented.

Since I came across the band, in the second half of 2000’s, the line up has been still. It seems that the members of other bands come and go, so what does Jaded Heart to still be there after so many years?

B: We always make sure we are having fun! If you treat it too much like a business or work, then it sucks the fun out of it. We have great chemistry in the band since we have been playing together for a long time now. Everything just clicks and we are all on the same page. If you share a common vision for what you think the band should be and sound like, everything is much easier and more natural. We simply love being on stage together and play music!
