Entrevista a MT, vocalista de The Spirit: ‘Intentamos desatar el infierno en cada concierto’

SofN: ¡Hola, MT! Antes que nada, muchas gracias por dedicar algo de tiempo en responder estas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Cómo te va?

Muy bien, gracias. La ola de calor ha terminado, así que estoy mucho mejor que hace un par de días: este fue definitivamente el verano más caluroso del que haya sido testigo en Alemania.

SofN: Sois una banda bastante joven y es posible que muchas personas aún no os conozcan bien. ¿Podría decirnos un poco quién eres y qué os llevó a convertiros en The Spirit?

El comienzo de The Spirit fue cuando conocí a nuestro batería MS a finales de 2015. Después de eso, comenzamos inmediatamente con la composición de nuestro álbum debut y, a finales de 2016, el bajista y el otro guitarrista se unieron a la banda y entramos el estudio para grabar nuestras canciones.

SofN: Y para hacerlo más musical, si tuvieras que elegir una sola canción de tu banda para presentar tu música a personas que todavía no os conocen, ¿cuál sería y por qué?

No importa, puedes elegir cualquier canción del álbum. Todas ellas representan a la banda muy bien, creo.

SofN: Vuestro primer álbum, Sounds from the Vortex (2017), salió en otoño del año pasado, pero ha sido relanzado hace unas semanas por Nuclear Blast, con una nueva portada y un perfil general más alto. Tengo que admitir que no lo había escuchado antes y suena realmente genial, poderoso, dinámico, épico y maduro. ¿Cómo surgieron las canciones de este álbum y qué ha pasado en la banda durante este último año?

Gracias. Pusimos mucho tiempo y energía en nuestro debut. Cada nota en este álbum viene desde el fondo de nuestros corazones. Ya que estamos trabajando con Nuclear Blast, hubo mucho por hacer para el re-lanzamiento. Relacionado con el negocio, relacionado con la promoción, pero también comenzamos con la composición del segundo álbum y así es como actualmente pasamos nuestro tiempo. Y con muchas entrevistas… y entrevistas… y entrevistas…

SofN: ¿Supongo que no es tan fácil para una banda de novatos firmar directamente por una major como Nuclear Blast para lanzar su primer disco? ¿Cómo ocurrió todo?

Después de grabar el álbum, nos pusimos en contacto con muchas discográficas, pero ninguna estaba interesada. Así que dijimos que, joder, eso no nos detendrá. Fundamos nuestro propio sello y lanzamos el álbum a fines de 2017 por nuestra cuenta. Nunca se nos ocurrió que una gran discográfica como Nuclear Blast pudiera estar interesada en nosotros. Esa es la razón por la que nunca les enviamos una copia del álbum. Un par de meses después de lanzar Sounds from the Vortex a través de Eternal Echoes, supieron de nosotros y parece que les gustó nuestra música. Nos contactaron, y así fue como comenzó.

SofN: Yo diría que vuestra principal influencia son las bandas suecas de black metal melódico de los 90, como Dissection o Unanimated, ¿es cierto? ¿Qué otras influencias tienes como escritor de música para crear vuestro sonido especial? ¿Qué bandas admiras?

Estamos influenciados por el black y el death metal de Escandinavia, el death metal de los Estados Unidos y muchos otros. Pero la mayor influencia es la vida misma.

Personalmente, no admiro a ninguna banda, pero hay muchas bandas que me gustan. El último concierto que presencié fue el de King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, que es una banda que me gusta mucho y tienen un excelente directo.

SofN: Las olas de celebración se podían sentir por toda Europa cuando se anunció la gira co-protagonizada por Kataklysm y Hypocrisy. ¿Cómo llegasteis a ser parte de esa gira y qué esperas de ella?

Llegar a formar parte de la gira fue bastante fácil, pues tenemos la suerte de compartir la misma discográfica con Kataklysm e Hypocrisy. Lo que las personas pueden esperar de nuestros shows: desatamos el infierno cada noche cuando tocamos las canciones de Sounds from the Vortex.

SofN: ¿Qué le dirías a las personas que tienen entradas para el espectáculo pero que podrían estar pensando pasar la primera hora en los bares de los alrededores del lugar? ¿Por qué crees que deberían venir antes para ver vuestro show?

Si pasan su tiempo en la barra de un bar, bueno, entonces cometerían un gran error.

SofN: Esta gira es simplemente increíble, pero si fueras tú el que pudieras organizar una gira con cuatro bandas de tu wlección, siendo The Spirit una de ellas, ¿cuáles elegirías y por qué?

Que tengamos la oportunidad de hacer esta gira con Hypocrisy y Kataklysm ya es algo muy especial para nosotros, así que nombraría esas dos bandas. Y además, sería un honor hacer una gira con Morbid Angel, ya que, sin lugar a dudas, son los reyes del death metal.

SofN: Además de la gira, ¿cuáles son vuestros planes a corto y mediano plazo? ¿Qué esperáis lograr en este ciclo del álbum? ¿Para cuándo el próximo?

Definitivamente, tocaremos más y haremos giras individuales. Ya estamos trabajando en el álbum de continuación de Sounds from the Vortex.

SofN: Hi, MT! First of all, thank you very much for dedicating some time to answer these questions for Science of Noise. How are you going these days? 

Very well, thank you. The heatwave is over, so I’m much better than a couple of days ago – this was definitely the hottest summer I ever witnessed in Germany. 

SofN: You are quite a young band and many people might not know well of you yet. Could you tell us a bit who you are what lead the four of you to become The Spirit? 

The beginning of The Spirit was the time when I met our drummer MS in late 2015. After that we immediately started with the songwriting for our debut album and at the end of 2016, the bass player and the other guitarist joined the band and we entered the studio to record our songs. 

SofN: And to make it more musical, if you had to choose a single song from your band to introduce your music to people that don’t know you yet, which one would it be and why? 

It doesn’t matter, you can pick up any song from the album. They all represent the band very well, I think. 

SofN: Your first album, Sounds from the Vortex (2017), came out in the fall last year but it has been re-released a few weeks ago by Nuclear Blast, with a new cover and and overall higher profile. I have to admit I didn’t listen to it before and it sounds truly great, powerful, dynamic, epic and mature. How did the songs of this album came up and what happened in the band during this last year? 

Thank you. We put a lot of time and energy in our debut. Every note on this album comes from the bottom of our hearts. Since we are working with Nuclear Blast, there was a lot to do for the re-release. Business related, promotion related, but we also started with the songwriting for the second album and that’s how we currently spend our time. And with a lot of interviews…. and interviews… and interviews… 

SofN: I guess it is not so easy for a rookie band to be signed straight up by a mammoth label like Nuclear Blast to release your first record? How did it all happen? 

After we recorded the album we got in contact with many labels but not a single one was interested. So we said fuck it, that won’t stop us. We founded our own label and released the album in late 2017 by our own. It never came to our mind that a big label like Nuclear Blast could be interested in us. That´s the reason we never sent them an application with the album. A couple of months after we released Sounds from the Vortex via Eternal Echoes, they heard about us and it seems they liked our music. They got in contact with us, and that´s how it started. 

SofN: I would say that your prime influence are those Swedish melodic black metal bands from the 90’s, in the verge of Dissection or Unanimated, is that true? What other influences do you have as a music writer to create your special sound? What bands do you look up to? 

We are influenced by black and death metal from Scandinavia, death metal from the United States and many others. But the biggest influence is life itself.

I personally don’t look up to any bands, but there are lots of bands I like. The last concert I witnessed was King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, it’s a band I really like and they’re an excellent live act. 

SofN: Waves of celebration could be felt all across Europe when the co-headlining tour starring Kataklysm and Hypocrisy was announced. How did you get to be part of that tour and what do you expect from it? 

To get on the tour was actually quite easy, we are lucky to share the same label with Kataklysm and Hypocrisy. What people can expect from our shows: We will unleash hell every night when we play the songs from Sounds from the Vortex. 

SofN: What would you say to those people that have tickets to the show but might be thinking of spending the first hour in the bars around the venue? Why do you think they should come in earlier to see your show? 

If they’ll spend their time on the bar, well, then they would do a big mistake. 

SofN: This tour is simply awesome, but if it was you who could put up a tour with any four bands you wanted, being The Spirit one of them, which ones would you choose and why? 

That we have the chance to do this tour with Hypocrisy and Kataklysm is already something very special for us, so I would name those two bands. And besides that, it would be an honor to do a tour with Morbid Angel, as they are definitely the death metal kings. 

SofN: Besides the tour, what are your short and medium term plans? What do you hope to achieve in this album cycle? When are we to expect your next one? 

We will definitely play more single shows and tours and we’re already working on the follow-up album to Sounds from the Vortex.
