Entrevista a Nicke Royale, guitarrista y vocalista de The Hellacopters: ‘Me encanta la música y desearía tener mucho más tiempo para hacer mucho más’

SofN: Es un inmenso placer hablar contigo Nicke, y también es genial saber que los Hellacopters vienen a tocar dentro de poco a España en salas después de vuestro retorno en 2016. ¿Qué clase de show nos espera en mayo, un greatest hits?

Vamos a dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos para ofreceros rock and roll enérgico con canciones de cada álbum que hayamos grabado. Así que supongo que podrías llamarlo show de grandes éxitos.

SofN: En Madrid vais a tocar en el KristonFest junto a bandas de la talla de Kadavar o Earthless. Un festival genial, perfecto para Hellacopters. ¿Conocías dicho festival?

No, la verdad es que no lo conocía hasta que tuvimos sobre la mesa la oferta de tocar allí, pero estamos deseosos de salir a tocar allí.

SofN: Mi última vez con The Hellacopters fue en el Azkena Rock Festival de hace dos años (2017) y fue increíble. Vuestro show fue uno de los mejores de todo el fin de semana: me encantó ver ese tridente con Dregen, Sami Yaffa y Nick Royale. ¿Recuerdas ese show?

¡Muchísimas gracias! Y sí, lo recuerdo. Lo pasamos muy bien, pero desafortunadamente nos perdimos a uno de mis grupos favoritos de todos los tiempos: Cheap Trick. Fue porque nuestro vuelo se retrasó. ¡El entusiasmo de la gente durante el concierto fue absolutamente increíble!

SofN: Fue vuestro segundo Azkena seguido ya que tocasteis el año anterior (en 2016). Yo no estuve allí, pero todas las personas que asistieron ese año me dijeron que en 2016 vuestro show fue un poco decepcionante. ¿Que pasó? ¿Tal vez estabais algo verdes después de tanto tiempo de inactividad? Tocasteis el Supershitty to the Max! entero.

Bueno… estoy de acuerdo. El show de 2017 fue definitivamente mucho mejor. Mucho me temo que tuvo que ver con el estado de forma en el que estaba Kenny (Hakansson, bajista). Es muy lamentable, pero también quedó completamente fuera de nuestras manos.

SofN: Recuerdo que en 2005 estaba buscando discos por Barcelona y me sorprendió cuando vi vuestro single de «I’m in a Band». ¡Un disco de vinilo en forma de pizza! Qué idea tan fantástica, la Lp estaba literalmente dentro de una caja de pizza. ¿Por qué decidiste elegir este formato tan original?

Habíamos hecho un video para una canción con la temática de la pizza, así que pensamos que un picture disc con pizzas de decoración quedarían perfectamente bien si iban en una caja de pizza. Sencillamente pensamos que era una idea divertida.

SofN: Sorprendentemente, tuvimos el año pasado en la televisión pública de España un programa dedicado a la música en vivo. Los Hellacopters fueron invitados a tocar y fueron entrevistados. Fue chocante ver una entrevista con Nicke y Dregen en un canal español. ¿Cómo fue la experiencia?

Disfrutamos mucho tocando y me alegro de haberlo hecho. No todos los días la gente puede ver rock ‘n’ roll en directo y por televisión, así que entiendo que esto no puede ser nada malo para el público. Y aunque me gusta más tocar en un concierto completo, creo que en este caso todo resultó bastante bien.

SofN: Recuerdo los años 90 cuando Europa tuvo una invasión del rock and roll escandinavo. Grandes momentos con Hellacopters, Gluecifer, Backyard Babies … ¿En esos días te sentías parte de un movimiento musical?

No creo que nadie pensara realmente en eso justo en ese momento. Ya sabes, estas cosas siempre son más fáciles de analizar en retrospectiva. Supongo que todos estábamos haciendo lo nuestro, pero como nos conocíamos y había algunas similitudes en lo musical, pues siempre es más fácil para la gente que lo ve desde fuera ver una cierta homogeneidad más que no la gente que realmente formaba parte de ello.

SofN: Hoy en día parece que las bandas de Retro Rock escandinavo están haciendo algo realmente grande como ya lo hizo tu generación en los años 90. Bandas como Graveyard, Horisont, Troubled Horse, Dungen, Witchcraft, Kadavar (estos en Alemania) están creciendo y esta etiqueta musical parece ya algo global. Desde tu punto de vista, ¿cree que hay ciertos puntos de conexión con la invasión escandinava en los años 90?

No lo sé realmente. Una vez más, creo que todas ellas son bandas diferentes, aunque tal vez compartan algunas similitudes. Me alegra saber que a la gente le gustan bandas que no apestan.

SofN: Si echamos un vistazo a tu carrera… ¡es una pasada! Entombed, Hellacopters, Imperial State Electric, Lucifer,… Todas ellas grandes bandas. Supongo que estás orgulloso de tu trabajo. Sólo unos pocos músicos pueden decir que estuvieron involucrados en tantas bandas de culto como en tu caso …

¡Gracias! Realmente no reflexiono mucho sobre eso ya que es lo que hago, es lo natural. No tengo mucho tiempo para reflexionar. Me encanta la música y desearía tener mucho más tiempo para hacer mucho más.

SofN: Leí en alguna parte que Nick Royale tiene un objetivo en su vida: grabar el álbum de rock ‘n’ roll perfecto. Creo que muchas veces has estado cerca de lograrlo… ¿Cuáles son los discos más perfectos después de todos estos años?

No creo que pueda hacer jamás un álbum perfecto de rock and roll, pero eso es lo que motiva y hace avanzar. Es bueno tener objetivos, incluso si no se logran tan fácilmente. Never Mind the Bollocks (Sex Pistols) es el álbum de rock ‘n’ roll perfecto en mi opinión.

SofN: Cada vez que te veo en la escena siempre llevas un gorro militar. ¿Es un símbolo para Nicke Royale?

Simplemente creo que queda bien. Nada más que eso.

SofN: Toca hablar sobre tus nuevos proyectos The Solution, Death Breathe y Lucifer. ¿Tienes suficiente tiempo para hacerlo? ¿Soul, death metal y hard rock? ¿Una palabra que podría definirte es «adicto al trabajo» o “workaholic”?

No, simplemente me gustaría tener mucho más tiempo. No sé si me puedo considerar “workaholic”. Tal vez estoy ocupado, o tal vez me guste estar ocupado… o tal vez simplemente soy inquieto.

SofN: Parece que Nicke Royale puede tocar todos los instrumentos y puede tocar todo tipo de estilos musicales, así que… ¿Aún quedan algunos retos en tu vida?

Bueno… toco la batería, la guitarra y el bajo, pero no tengo ni idea de los teclados, por lo que lamento no haber aprendido. También me gustaría mucho aprender la armónica y saber tocar la guitarra slide. Así que sí, hay desafíos allí afuera. Si tan solo tuviera un poco más de tiempo…

SofN: Es hora de hablar de alguien realmente especial: Robert Dahlqvist. Desafortunadamente, falleció en 2017. Cada vez que los Hellacopters saltan al escenario… supongo que es difícil ver que Robert no está allí. Pero es genial ver cómo los fans echan de menos a Robert. Fue amado por toda la «familia Hellacopters».

Sí, realmente es una historia triste y lo extrañamos mucho todos los días que pasan.

SofN: Finalmente, estoy trabajando en un informe especial sobre «canciones perfectas». Por favor, ¿puedes decirme tu opinión sobre estas?

• «Stairway to Heaven» (Led Zeppelin): Una muy buena canción. Ha sido tocada hasta la saciedad, pero aún se mantiene. Uno de los mejores solos de guitarra, en mi opinión.
• «Black Rose» (Thin Lizzy): No es mi canción favorita de Lizzy ni mucho menos. Nunca fui un fan de ellos, yendo por el sendero folk. Tiro más por su lado más rockero.
• «Final Countown» (Europe): Europe no son exactamente de mi estilo y esta canción huele tan gloriosamente a los 80. Pero bueno, funcionó, así que, ¿quién soy yo para juzgarla? Es una canción de éxito, bien escrita. Simplemente, no es para mí.

SofN: Hablando de canciones perfectas… ¿Cuál es la mejor canción de rock jamás escrita para Nick Royale?

No tengo idea. Realmente no me corresponde decirlo. Me gustan algunas canciones más que otras, por supuesto, pero realmente no te sabría decir cuál.

SofN: Si tuviera que elegir una canción entre las tuyas obras… tal vez elegiría «I’lll Let You Down» (Imperial State Electric). Una canción fantástica con una influencia Beatles. Me encanta el video en unplugged. ¿Cual es tu favorita?

¡Muchas gracias! Me gusta esa también. No lo sé, pero estoy muy contento con «(Gotta Get Some Action) Now!». Aparte de eso, no creo que tenga ninguna favorita en particular. No escucho mis propias canciones a menos que tenga que volver a aprender una parte que olvidé, por lo que es difícil de decir.

SofN: Gracias por tu tiempo Nicke. Algo que me encanta de ti es que todas las bandas en las que has estado trabajando son realmente interesantes, y después de todos estos años, todo lo que estás haciendo ahora sigue siendo interesante y bueno. Gracias por su música.

SofN: This interview is in order to promote your upcoming shows in Spain on next May. It is a pleasure to talk with you Nicke, and it is great to know that The Hellacopters are coming to Spain soon after your come back in 2016. What we are going to see in May, a best of show?

We’re gonna do our very best to deliver high energy rock and roll with songs from every album we made. So I guess you could you could call it a best of show.

SofN: In Madrid you are going to play in the KristonFest with great bands like Kadavar and Earthless. A fantastic festival, perfect for The Hellacopters. Did you know the festival?

No, I did not know about the festival until we got the offer to play but we’re really looking forward to it!

SofN: My last experience with The Hellacopters was in Azkena Rock Festival two years ago (2017) and it was amazing. Your show was one of the best ones of the whole weekend: I loved to see in the first line Dregen, Sami Yaffa and Nick Royale. Do you remember that show?

Thank you! Yes, I remember it. We had a really good time but unfortunately we missed one of my all time favourite bands Cheap Trick because our flight was delayed. The crowd was absolutely amazing!

SofN: It was your second Azkena because you played the year before (in 2016). I was not there but all the people who attended at both shows told me that in 2016 your show was a bit disappointing. What happened? Maybe you were in the first steps of your comeback? You played Supershitty to the Max! album in its entirety.

Well, I agree. The 2017 show was definitely a lot better. A lot of it had to do with the shape Kenny was in I’m afraid. It’s very regretful but also completely out of our hands.

SofN: I remember that in 2005 I was seeking CD’s in Barcelona and I was surprised when I saw your LP single “I’m in a Band”. A pizza shaped CD! What a fantastic idea, the LP was in a pizzabox. Why did you decide to choose this format?

We had done a video for the song with a pizza theme so we thought a picture disc with a pizza went quite well with a pizza box. We just thought it was a funny idea.

SofN: Amazingly in Spain we had last year a live music TV program. The Hellacopters were invited to play and had an interview. It was surprising to can see an interview with you and Dregen in a Spanish channel. How it was the experience?

I very much enjoyed the playing and I’m glad we did it. Perhaps it isn’t everyday people get to see proper rock and roll on TV and that can’t be a bad thing I guess. Although I like playing actual live shows better I think this one turned out to be quite good.

SofN: I remember the 90’s when Europe had a Scandinavian rock’n’roll invasion. Beautiful times with Hellacopters, Gluecifer, Backyard Babies… In those days did you feel part of a musical movement?

I don’t think anyone thought of that at the moment. These things are always easier to analyse in hindsight. I guess we all were just doing our own thing but since we know each other and there were a few similarities in terms of the music it’s easy for people on the outside to see it more of a thing than the people who were actually in it.

SofN: Nowadays it seems that the Retro Rock bands from Scandinavia are doing something really great as your generation did in the 90’s. Bands like Graveyard, Horisont, Troubled Horse, Dungen, Witchcraft, Kadavar (in Germany) are growing and this musical tag is something global now. From your point of view, do you think there are common points with the Scandinavian invasion in the 90’s?

I don’t know really. Again, I think they’re all different bands but maybe share a few similarities. I’m just glad people like bands that don’t suck.

SofN: If we take a look at your career it is something amazing. Entombed, Hellacopters, Imperial State Electric, Lucifer… All of them are great bands. I suppose you are proud of your work. Only a few musicians can say that were involved in a cult bands like in your case…

Thank you! I don’t really reflect on it since it’s just what I do. I don’t have time to reflect. I just love music and I wish I had more time to do even more.

SofN: I read somewhere that Nick Royale have a goal in his live: to record the perfect rock and roll album. I think that many times you were closer to achieve it. Which are the most rock-perfect albums after all these years?

I don’t think I’ll ever make a perfect rock and roll album but that’s also what keeps me going. It’s good to have goals even if they’re not so easily achieved. Never Mind The Bollocks is the perfect rock and roll album in my opinion.

SofN: Everytime I see you on the scene you always wear a military cap. It is a symbol for Nicke Royale?

I just think it looks alright. Nothing more to it than that.

SofN: Time to talk about your new projects The Solution, Death Breathe and Lucifer. Do you have enough time to do it? Soul, Death metal and hard rock bands? A word that could define you is “workaholic”?

No, I wish I had a lot more time. I don’t know about workaholic. Maybe I am or maybe I just like to be busy or perhaps I’m just restless.

SofN: It seems that Nicke Royale can play all the instruments and can play every kind of musical styles so… Are still there some challenges remaining in your life?

Well, I play drums, guitar and bass but have no clue about keyboards for example which I regret that I never learned. I would also very much like to learn the harmonica. And to play slide guitar. So yes, there are challenges out there. If only I had more time…

SofN: Time to talk about somebody really special: Robert Dahlqvist. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2017. Every time The Hellacopters jump on stage I suppose is hard to remember that Robert is not there, but is great to see how the fans miss Robert. He was beloved for all the “The Hellacopters family”.

Yes, it is truly a sad story and we miss him dearly everyday.

SofN: Finally, I am working on a special report about “perfect songs”. Please, can you tell me your opinion about these ones?

• «Stairway to Heaven» (Led Zeppelin): A very good song indeed. It’s been played to death but still holds up. One of the best guitar solos ever in my opinion.
• «Black Rose» (Thin Lizzy): Not my favourite Lizzy song by a long shot. I was never a fan of them going down the folky trail. I dig their meat and potatoes kind of rock ‘n’ roll songs better.
• «Final Countown» (Europe): Europe isn’t exactly my cup of tea and this song is dripping with cheese in all it’s 80’s production glory. But hey, it totally worked so who am I to judge? It is a well written hit song. Just not for me.

SofN: Talking about perfect songs… Which is the best rock song ever written for Nick Royale?

I have no idea. It really isn’t for me to say. I like some songs better than others of course but I really don’t know.

SofN: If I had to choose a song among your works… maybe I would choose “I’ll Let you Down” (Imperial State Electric). A fantastic song with a Beatles approach. I love the unplugged video. Which is your favourite?

Thank you very much! I like that one too. I don’t know but I’m very happy with “(Gotta Get Some Action) Now!”. Other than that i don’t think I have a favourite. I don’t listen to my own stuff unless I have to relearn a part that I forgot so it’s hard to say.

SofN: Thank you for your time Nicke. Something that I love from you is that all the bands in whom you have been working are really interesting, and after all these years, all what you are doing now stills being interesting and good. Thank you for your music.
