Entrevista a Nico Lass, batería de Witchthroat Serpent: ‘Francia siempre ha tenido un lado rebelde y anti-establishment’

SofN: Buenos días, en primer lugar, me gustaría agradecer la oportunidad de hacer esta entrevista. ¡Gracias chicos!

Tal vez algunos de nuestros lectores no saben mucho acerca de vuestra banda, ¿podrías poner en contexto a la banda y su propuesta musical?

Nico: ¡Hola!, somos una banda de stoner doom que viene de Toulouse, al suroeste de Francia. Comenzamos la banda (Fredrik y yo) después de un hiato de nuestra banda de drone / doom Habsyll, y decidimos centrarnos en un lado más dinámico del doom metal. Nuestras letras son sobre el ocultismo, el chamanismo, las drogas, la vida y la muerte y todas las cosas que dan forma al otro mundo, lo invisible y lo intangible.

SofN: La banda se formó en 2011, después de tres álbumes increíbles y más de ocho años, sois la misma gente que comenzó esta banda. ¿Puedes explicarnos cómo es la convivencia entre vosotros?

Nos conocemos desde hace mucho tiempo, llevo casi 15 años tocando con Fredrik, somos amigos desde hace mucho tiempo, así que sabemos cómo intercambiarnos. Por otro lado, nuestro bajista fundador Lo Klav nos dejó en 2018, justo después de la grabación del álbum Swallow the Venom. Fue una decisión difícil para él porque nuestra relación seguía siendo tan fuerte como lo era al principio, pero ya no podía involucrarse como antes y por eso prefería dejar su lugar en lugar de retrasarnos. Su reemplazo fue encontrado rápidamente y Ugo Greifengeier se unió a la banda a finales de 2018.

SofN: Vostros sois tres músicos y me imagino que a veces puede ser complicado llegar a un acuerdo. ¿Cómo funciona el proceso creativo en Witchthroat Serpent?

Fredrik encuentra los riffs, construye la canción global y luego nos envía una grabación de guitarra para que podamos escuchar y percibir la esencia de la canción. Luego trabajamos en los arreglos de la canción en el local para marcar el tono y el ritmo que nos satisfazca completamente. La mayoría de las letras están escritas por mí, a menudo mucho antes de escribir la música y elegidas por Fredrik de acuerdo con sus sentimientos al escribir la canción. A lo largo de este período, intercambiamos y validamos las ideas de cada uno a medida que la pieza final toma forma.

Personalmente me encantan estas fases de composición, son momentos de intensa creatividad, la materialización del espíritu en realidad.

SofN: Con el nuevo álbum terminado y en tus manos, ¿cómo lo comparas con el resto de los álbumes de la banda? ¿Cambiarías algo?

Swallow the venom es el digno sucesor de Sang-Dragon, una especie de secuela en la que exploramos y profundizamos el concepto de Sang-Dragon. Como en cada álbum probamos nuevas configuraciones y nuevos equipos. Con respecto al diseño gráfico, queríamos trabajar con Andy Julia un amigo de mucho tiempo, trabajar en las fotos para dar un aspecto más realista y oscuro a nuestro trabajo, decir que todo ha sido pensado y así lo hacemos. No queremos que nada cambie de este álbum, lo hemos dejado como queríamos.

SofN: ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de creación de este trabajo?

Al igual que Sang-Dragon, entramos en el estudio y grabamos «en vivo» toda la parte instrumental en un día. Siempre queremos mantener la espontaneidad de las tomas en vivo, para nosotros es esencial en nuestra música. Luego se agregan la segunda guitarra; los solos y voces en los siguientes días, y finalmente los arreglos y premezclas. El propósito de este proceso es sentir las canciones como si las estuviéramos tocando en un concierto, es muy importante para nosotros tener esta coherencia entre los conciertos y los álbumes.

SofN: Y sobre las letras, ¿qué destacarías de manera resumida?

En este álbum nos ocupamos de la espiritualidad, como las canciones «Lucifer’s Fire» que describen un ritual que hicimos juntos o «The Might of the Unfailing Source» hablando sobre la vida después de la muerte. Estas letras fueron inspiradas por el trabajo de Chico Xavier, un medium brasileño, en el libro y la película «No Solar«. «Pauper’s Grave» es sin duda la pista más oscura del álbum, que habla de la plaga negra y las fosas comunes del atrio Saint-Maclou de Rouen, un antiguo cementerio parroquial en forma de claustro cuyas galerías esculpidas de escenas funerarias solían ser un osario. «Hunt for The Mountebank» habla sobre personas que hablan demasiado y creen que lo saben todo. «Scorpent Serpion» trata sobre el chamanismo y la estrecha relación entre la serpiente y el escorpión. «Red-Eyed Albino» es sobre un sueño que siempre hice buscando una serpiente blanca con ojos rojo detrás mio. «No More Giant Octopuses» trata sobre una persona que rechaza a la humanidad, que ya no puede vivir entre ella y bajo la influencia de las drogas quiere dejarse morir en el fondo del océano.

SofN: Con la perspectiva del tiempo, ¿de qué decisiones estás más orgulloso y qué crees que deberías haber tomado antes y qué crees que estuvo mal?

No hay mucho que decir, cada álbum / trabajo tiene sus buenos y malos momentos, lo esencial es terminarlo, representa una imagen de nuestro trabajo en este momento, no nos arrepentimos, seguimos nuestro camino.

SofN: Creo que este es vuestro primer trabajo de larga duración con Svart Records y un trabajo un poco diferente en relación con Sang-Dragon. ¿Cómo ha influido Svart en el resultado final de Swallow the Venom ?

Ya trabajamos con Svart Records en Sang-Dragon, ellos lanzaron la versión LP y también lanzaron el 7 “EP Striped Dragon. Svart ha validado todas nuestras solicitudes, no ha influido en Swallow The Venom de ninguna manera, estamos muy contentos de trabajar con ellos.

SofN: A finales de abril, la banda vendrá a Barcelona para tocar en el Riff Ritual Festival Vol.5, un festival increíble con grandes bandas. ¿Qué tipo de show viviremos allí?

Sí, estamos muy contentos de volver a Barcelona y más aún al Riff Ritual Fest. Nos gustaría agradecer a Marc por agregarnos en el cartel, es un gran honor para nosotros. Durante este concierto tocaremos principalmente canciones de nuestro último álbum Swallow The Venom y una canción de cada álbum anterior. Esperamos estar allí.

SofN: ¿Qué opinas sobre el público barcelonés y español?

Para nosotros, Barcelona es una ciudad clave. Hicimos nuestro primer concierto en el extranjero en 2014 en el Day of Doom Festival, José y su equipo creyó en nosotros en nuestros comienzos, siempre es un placer volver a Barcelona. Además, fue allí donde conocimos a Branca Studio con quien trabajamos más tarde, para nosotros Barcelona es un poco como nuestra segunda casa.

SofN: ¿Qué bandas influyeron en el sonido la banda?

Podemos citar a Electric Wizard, Acid King, Melvins, Nirvana para nombrar a los principales.

SofN: Francia tiene una escena increíble (y rock, y metal, y electrónica …), ¿puedes contarnos el secreto al respecto? ¿Ayuda el estado o alguna organización cultural?

Francia siempre ha tenido un lado rebelde y anti-establishment que se puede encontrar en muchos artistas intérpretes, tal vez influye en los músicos. Sobre doom, la escena tardó mucho en emerger, pero ahora estamos empezando a tener muy buenas bandas, por nombrar algunas, solo puedo aconsejarles que escuchen Deathbell, Witchfinder, Wormsand y Pillars.

SofN: Good morning, first of all, I would like I want to thank you for the oportunity to do this interview ! Thanks boys.

Maybe some  of our readers doesn’t know about Witchthroat Serpent, could you put in context the band and his musical proposal ? 

Hi, We are a doom stoner band coming from Toulouse, south-west of France. We started the band (Fredrik and I) after the hiatus of our drone/doom band Habsyll, and we decided to focus on a more “dynamic” side of doom metal. Our lyrics are about occultism, shamanism, drugs, life & death and all the things that shape the other world, the invisible and the intangible.

SofN: The band was formed in 2011, after three amazing albums and more than eight years, you’re the same people that started this band. Can you explain how is the coexitence between you?

We have known each other for a very long time, I have been playing with Fredrik for almost 15 years now, we are long-time friends so we know how to exchange with each other. On the other hand, our founding bassist Lo Klav left us in 2018, just after the recording of the album Swallow the Venom. It was a tough decision for him because our relationship was still as strong as it was at the beginning, but he could no longer get involved as before and so he preferred to leave his place rather than slow us down. His replacement was found quickly and Ugo Greifengeier joined the band at the end of 2018.

SofN: You are three musicians and I imagine that sometimes can be complicated to get in agreement. How does the creative process work in Witchthroat Serpent ?

Fredrik finds the riffs, builds the global song and then sends us a guitar recording so that we can listen and already perceive the essence of the song. Then we work on the arrangements of the song in rehearsal in order to reach the groove and tempo that completely satisfies us. The lyrics are mostly written by me, often well before the writing of the music and chosen by Fredrik according to his feelings when writing the song. Throughout this period we exchange and validate each other’s ideas as the final piece takes shape. Personally I love these phases of composition, they are moments of intense creativity, the materialization of the spirit in reality.

SofN: With the new album finished and in your hands, how do you compare it to the rest of the albums of the band? Would you change something?

Swallow the venom is the worthy successor to Sang-Dragon, a kind of sequel on which we explored and deepened the concept of Sang-Dragon. As on each album we tested new configurations and new equipment. Concerning the graphic design we wanted to work with a long-time friend Andy Julia by choosing to work on photos in order to give a more realistic, a more worrying side to our work, this to say that everything has been thought out that we do not want anything to change on this album, we have burned it in the marble.

SofN: How has been the process of creating this work ?

Just like Sang-Dragon, we went into the studio and recorded «live» the whole instrumental part in one day. We want to keep the spontaneity of the live takes, for us it is essential in our music. Then second guitar, solos and vocals are added the next few days, followed by arrangements and pre-mixing. The purpose of this process is to feel the songs as if we were playing them in concert, it is very important for us to have this coherence between the concerts and the albums.

SofN: And about the lyrics, what would you highlight  in a sumarized way ?

On this album we deal with spirituality like the songs «Lucifer’s Fire» who describe a ritual we made together or «The Might of the Unfailing Source» talking about life after death. These lyrics were inspired by the work a Chico Xavier, a Brazilian medium, on the book & movie “No Solar”. «Pauper’s Grave» is undoubtedly the darkest track on the album talking about the black plague and the mass graves of the Saint-Maclou atrium of Rouen a former parish graveyard in a cloister shape whose galleries sculpted of funeral scenes used to be an ossuary. «Hunt for The Mountebank» talks about people who talk too much and think they know everything, «Scorpent Serpion» is about shamanism and the close relationship between serpent and scorpion, «Red-Eyed Albino» is about a dream I made always seeking a white snake with red eyes behind me and  «No More Giant octopuses» is about a person who rejects humanity, who can no longer live among it and under the influence of drugs wants to let himself die at the bottom of the ocean.

SofN: With the perspective of time, what decisions are you most proud of and what do you think you should have taken before and what do you think was wrong?

Not much to say, each album/work has his good and bad moments, the essential is to finish it, it represents a picture of our work at this moment, no trailer no regrets, we continue on our way

SofN: This is your first work with Svart Records and a bit different work in relation to «Sang-Dragon». How has Svart influencedthe final result of «Swallow the Venom» ? 

We already worked with Svart records on Sang-Dragon, they released the LP version and they also released the 7”EP Striped Dragon. Svart have validated all our requests, they have not influenced Swallow The venom in any way, we are very happy to work with them.

SofN: In later april, the band will come to Barcelona to play in Riff Ritual Festival Vol.5, an amazing festival with huge bands. What kind of show of your band we will live there ?

Yes we are very happy to come back to Barcelona and even more so to the riff ritual festival. We would like to thank Marc for adding us to the line-up, it is a great honour for us. During this concert we will mainly play songs from our latest album Swallow The Venom and a song from each previous albums. We look forward to being there.

SofN: What is your opinion about the Barcelona and Spanish public ?

For us Barcelona is a key city, we did our first concert abroad in 2014 at the Day of Doom Festival, José and his team believed in us in our beginnings, it is always a pleasure to return to Barcelona. Moreover, it was there that we met Branca Studio with whom we worked later on, for us Barcelona is a bit like our second home.

SofN: Which bands infuenced on Witchthroat Serpent sound ?

We can quote Electric Wizard, Acid King, Melvins, Nirvana to name the main ones

SofN: France have got an amazing doom (and rock, and metal, and electronic…) scene, can you tell us the secret about it ? Does the council, the state or some cultural organization, help about it ?

France has always had a rebellious and anti-establishment side that can be found in many performing artists, perhaps it influences the musicians. About doom, the scene took a long time to emerge but now we are starting to have very good bands, to name a few I can only advise you to listen to Deathbell, Witchfinder, Wormsand and Pillars.
