Entrevista a Nico y Jaakko, vocalista y guitarrista de Marianas Rest: ‘Fata Morgana es un largo viaje al aislamiento’

¡Hola, chicos! Gracias por vuestro tiempo. ¿Cómo estáis?

Nico: ¡Bien gracias! Espero que este invierno finalmente termine.

Jaakko: ¡Me siento bien! El disco ha salido y la primavera está ya por aquí.

Primero quiero felicitar a la banda por el nuevo álbum. Afirmo que es vuestro mejor trabajo hasta la fecha. ¿Estáis de acuerdo conmigo?

Nico: Bueno, esto puede sonar a cliché, pero creo que cada álbum que hemos hecho siempre ha sido una mejora con respecto a los anteriores. ¡Entonces sí!

Jaakko: Tratamos de mejorar un poco cada vez y creo que lo logramos en este disco.

“Fata Morgana” ha llegado a nuestras vidas en un momento extremadamente complejo. La inesperada crisis biológica mundial nos está sacudiendo con fuerza. ¿Cómo lo afrontáis a nivel personal y cómo lo afrontáis como banda? ¿Habéis cambiado muchos planes?

Nico: He trabajado mucho desde casa y he tratado de ajustar mi vida social según la situación. Creo que en Finlandia hemos tenido una situación bastante buena hasta ahora en comparación con muchos países. Aunque parece ir empeorando mientras hablamos.

Como banda, por supuesto, ha habido cancelaciones de shows y cosas así, pero hemos podido ensayar y tener reuniones de banda, etc. con bastante normalidad. Afortunadamente somos una banda joven y pequeña, no tenemos grandes tripulaciones y obligaciones monetarias, por lo que esta situación no nos ha llevado a la bancarrota.

Jaakko: Creo que todos los de la banda tenemos el tipo de personalidades que no se ven muy afectadas por la solidaridad. Nos divertimos juntos y necesitamos compañía de vez en cuando, pero la solidaridad también está bien. Creo que las personalidades un poco más extrovertidas lo tienen mucho más difícil.

«Fata Morgana» es el sucesor perfecto de «Ruins». Parece que habéis encontrado un sonido definido y una identidad más ecléctica. ¿Es una evolución natural o simplemente estáis tratando de abriros a cosas nuevas?

Nico: Esta vez, teniendo más confianza en lo que estábamos haciendo, pudimos dejar que las canciones y el sonido evolucionaran más por sí mismos. No lo forzamos. Por ejemplo, si pensamos que algo sonaba demasiado ligero o suave en la etapa de demo, sabíamos que eventualmente se convertiría en algo que sonaba como nosotros sin intentar introducir algo de locura de contrabajo de guitarra trémolo en la mezcla. Debido a que nos estamos enfocando principalmente en construir las atmósferas, creo que tenemos más confianza en probar todos los enfoques diferentes para lograrlo de lo que quizás estábamos antes.

Jaakko: Generalmente no hacemos grandes planes artísticos porque a veces la música te lleva a un lugar diferente al que pensabas originalmente. Si luchas contra la corriente, normalmente terminas perdiendo. Solo tratamos de dirigir un poco la corriente. De esta manera nos vemos obligados a permanecer abiertos todo el tiempo. Si una canción necesita algo que nunca hemos probado antes, no hay nada que nos detenga. A veces es algo bueno, a veces no. Intentamos recordar nuestros errores para no cometerlos dos veces.

Me atrevería a decir que estamos ante el disco más personal de la banda. También os habéis atrevido a tocar nuevas teclas y añadir una nueva franja de colores a vuestro sonido. ¿Qué te ha hecho dar otro giro? ¿No tienes miedo de que estos nuevos sonidos no atraigan a tus fans?

Nico: Como banda siempre intentamos evolucionar y probar cosas nuevas. Creo que la mayor decepción para los fans sería lanzar el mismo álbum una y otra vez. Encuentro que lo más importante es no perder la chispa creativa.

Jaakko: Tienes que seguir moviéndote o terminarás mohoso. El panorama general se ha mantenido (y probablemente seguirá siendo) igual, pero quedan muchas cosas nuevas por explorar en nuestro patio de recreo musical. Tal vez tome lecciones de melódica para el próximo.

Como banda, ¿cómo defines este nuevo álbum? ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre las letras y las historias detrás de la música?

Jaakko: Es un largo viaje al aislamiento. Reflexionar por qué nosotros, como humanos, actuamos como lo hacemos y por qué es tan difícil ver nuestros propios errores de juicio. También es el final de una historia que comenzó en nuestro primer álbum Horror Vacui. El narrador que se perdió a sí mismo y finalmente colapsó mentalmente en Ruins intenta reconstruir su vida nuevamente en este álbum. Para hacer eso, necesita descubrir por qué sucedió todo. Así que emprende un largo viaje a los lugares más hostiles conocidos por el hombre y, a su manera espartana, intenta resolverlo todo. Por supuesto, con Covid, la historia dio un nuevo giro.

«The Weight» es mi canción favorita no solo del álbum sino de vuestra carrera. ¡Qué pedazo de canción! ¿Qué me podéis contar de ella?

Nico: Hemos recibido muchos buenos comentarios de esa canción. Probablemente sea la cosa más pesada que jamás hayamos hecho. Tuvimos la idea de intentar hacer una canción larga y enorme con la menor cantidad posible de partes diferentes. La canción evoluciona agregando diferentes condimentos a medida que avanza en lugar de tener una estructura típica de verso-coro, solo para mantener el hipnotismo. Creo que también salió bien.

Jaakko: En realidad, esta canción estaba a punto de ser eliminada del álbum. Tuvimos un pequeño problema para que funcionara. Ahora todo lo que puedo decir es que me alegro de que no nos dimos por vencidos. Creo que es uno de los mejores temas que hemos hecho.

¿Cómo funciona el proceso creativo en Marianas Rest? Sois muchos músicos y supongo que a veces puede resultar complicado conseguir que todos estén de acuerdo. ¿Qué puedes comentar sobre trabajar juntos?

Nico: Es una democracia. Comenzamos a involucrar a todos en la escritura desde el principio. Por lo general, solo tenemos una parte de una idea, un riff o un verso, etc. Y después de eso, todo está manos a la obra. Creo que eso nos ayuda a no enamorarnos demasiado de nuestras propias ideas, ya que nadie se ha tomado demasiado tiempo trabajando en algo solo para descubrir que el resto de la banda puede no estar tan emocionado con esa canción en particular. Las canciones se desglosan y construyen varias veces, primero con la banda, luego con la banda y el productor. Creo que de esa manera puedes ver qué funciona y qué no, al menos en nuestro caso.

Jaakko: No tenemos un cerebro en la banda. Todos traemos nuestras propias influencias e ideas y luego comenzamos a construir hacia algo que proviene de todos nosotros. Se necesita hablar mucho. A veces sientes que la discusión nunca termina 🙂

Normalmente, el tercer álbum suele ser un punto de inflexión en la carrera de una banda porque define en parte el sonido y el potencial de una banda. ¿Cómo afrontáis esta evolución? ¿Estáis en ese punto de hacer lo que os apetece?

Jaakko: Por supuesto que es importante para nosotros lo que piensan los oyentes sobre las cosas que estamos haciendo. Al mismo tiempo, debes hacer lo que te parezca correcto. En el momento en que comienzas a hacer lo que otra persona quiere, comienza a ir en la dirección equivocada. Creo que tenemos muchas cosas en las que podemos mejorar en el futuro. Si tratamos de mejorar nuestras debilidades, eventualmente conducirá a una evolución natural. Entonces, si en el quinto álbum hemos logrado mantenernos fieles a lo que sea que hemos estado haciendo, entonces ha ido como debería.

Este es el primer álbum con Napalm Records. ¿Cómo se forjó esta alianza y cómo has funcionado todo en el primer álbum?

Nico: Era finales de 2019 y tuvimos una fiesta con la banda. Intentamos convencer a nuestro cantante Jaakko, quien manejó las cartas promocionales, para que enviara nuestros viejos álbumes a un grupo de sellos discográficos que pensamos que podrían ser demasiado grandes para nosotros, y preguntarles si estarían interesados ​​en una colaboración. Sabíamos que era una posibilidad remota porque no habíamos grabado ninguna demo nueva en ese momento. Afortunadamente, las cartas se enviaron porque recibimos una respuesta de Napalm. Pidieron escuchar algunas demos una vez que las hicimos. Finalmente les enviamos las demos y esperamos una respuesta. Pasó el tiempo y no recibimos noticias de ellos, por lo que, naturalmente, pensamos que las demos no eran lo suficientemente buenas. Pero después de un mes más o menos, alguien revisó nuestra carpeta de correo basura y allí estaba, la respuesta. Pensamos que habíamos metido la pata y no había forma de que estuvieran interesados ​​en nuestra banda, ya que ni siquiera podíamos responder a un simple correo electrónico. Gracias a nuestro chico de A&R, Sebastian, que no se rindió con nosotros en ese momento, pero todavía estaba interesado en trabajar con nosotros.

La colaboración ha sido excelente y nos hemos sentido muy bienvenidos a la familia Napalm. Tal grupo de profesionales. Un mundo completamente nuevo para nosotros.

Estar en una banda y hacer tantas giras no es solo subir al escenario y tocar una hora y media con tus compañeros y «adiós muy buenas». Al final, tus compañeros son como tu familia, o tu pareja, compartes escenario, viajes, vivencias, emociones … ¿Cuál es el mejor recuerdo de estos años «en familia»?

Nico: No es un solo recuerdo, se trata más de compartir toda tu vida con el grupo. Terminas pasando por la mierda con esta gente. Por ejemplo, hace unos años todos estábamos pasando por grandes cambios en nuestras vidas. Todos estábamos más o menos en un estado de turbulencia y salimos adelante como grupo. Todavía podemos poner música mientras nos damos cuenta de nuestras vidas.

Jaakko: Es difícil elegir un recuerdo, porque este tipo de vínculo se forma a través del tiempo y muchos tipos diferentes de situaciones. Quizás lo mejor es el hecho de que sabes que puedes confiar en este extraño grupo de personas en todas las circunstancias. Si esta banda dejara de existir, estoy seguro de que todavía estaríamos juntos.

Y al contrario, las complicaciones siempre aparecen en estas relaciones personales, en las giras … ¿alguna vez habéis tenido esa sensación de mandar todo a la mierda, de pensar que lo que hacéis es inútil? Y si es así, ¿cuándo?

Nico: Todavía no 🙂 Creo que ese día llegará eventualmente.

Jaakko: Por supuesto que tienes dudas de vez en cuando, pero creo que está relacionado principalmente con la fase de escritura. En algún momento empiezas a sentir que todo es una mierda aunque las canciones sean de grado A. Pero la crítica extrema es algo necesario porque de esa manera puedes encontrar los defectos.

¿Qué podemos esperar de Marianas Rest en el futuro?

Nico: Con cada álbum y cada hito, hemos intentado mejorar un poco. ¡Así que, con suerte, álbumes un poco mejores,shows un poco mejores y un montón de momentos divertidos!

La vida nos anima a soñar, a cumplir las metas que tenemos en mente. ¿Qué sueños realistas tiene Marianas Rest que aún os quede por cumplir?

Nico: Bueno, tener un trato con un sello importante fue uno de ellos. Ahora que eso se cumplió, ¿quizás una gira por Estados Unidos?

Jaakko: Llegar a recorrer diferentes países y conocer gente nueva en el camino. Creo que eso es lo que espero con ansias.

Nico: Fine thank you! Looking forward to having this winter time finally over.

Jaakko: Feeling fine! The record is out and spring is upon us.

First I want to congratulate you on your new album. I affirm that it is your best work to date. Do you agree with me?

Nico: Well, this might be a cliché but I think every album we have made has always been an improvement from the previous ones. So yes!

Jaakko: We try to improve just a little bit every time and I think we managed to do that on this record.

“Fata Morgana” has come into our lives at an extremely complex time. The unexpected global biological crisis is shaking us hard. How do you face it on a personal level and how do you face it as a band? Have you had to change many plans?

Nico: I have worked a lot from home and tried to adjust my social life according to the situation. I think in Finland we have had a pretty good situation so far compared to a lot of countries. Although it seems to be getting worse as we speak.

As a band of course there has been show cancellations and such but we have been able to rehearse and have band meetings etc. pretty normally. Luckily we are such a young and small band we don’t have big crews and monetary obligations so this situation has not bankrupted us.

Jaakko: I think all of us in the band have the kind of personalities that are not hugely affected by solidarity. We have fun together and need company from time to time but solidarity is okay too. I think a bit more outgoing personalities have it much harder.

«Fata Morgana» is the perfect successor to «Ruins». It seems you have found a definite sound as well as a more eclectic identity. Is it natural evolution or are you just trying to open yourself up to new things?

Nico: This time around having more confidence in what we were doing we were able to let the songs and the sound evolve more by themselves. We didn’t force it. For example if we thought something sounded too light or mellow at the demo stage, we knew that eventually it would develop into something that sounded like us without trying to jam some tremolo guitar double bass madness into the mix. Because we are focusing mainly on building the atmospheres I think we are more confident in trying all different approaches to achieving it than maybe we were before.

Jaakko: Generally we don’t make big artistic plans because sometimes the music takes you to a different place than you originally thought. If you fight the current, you usually end up losing. We just try to steer the current a bit. This way we are kinda forced to stay open all the time. If a song needs something we have never tried before, there is nothing holding us back. Sometimes it is a good thing, sometimes not. We try to remember our mistakes to not do them twice.

I dare say that we are facing the most personal album of the band. You have also dared to touch new keys and add a new strip of colors to your sound. What has made you give another twist? Are you not afraid that these new sounds will not appeal to your fans?

Nico: As a band we always try to evolve and try new things. I think the bigger letdown for the fans would be to release the same album over and over again. I find that the most important thing is not to lose the creative spark.

Jaakko: You have to keep moving or you’ll end up moldy. The big picture has stayed (and probably will stay) the same but there are a lot of new things left to explore in our musical playground. Maybe I’ll take melodica lessons for the next one.

As a band, how do you define this new album? What can you tell us about the lyrics and the stories behind the music?

Jaakko: It is a long trip into isolation. To ponder why we as humans act like we do and why it is so hard to see our own errors of judgement. It is also an ending to a storyline that started on our first album Horror Vacui. The narrator who lost himself and eventually mentally collapsed on Ruins tries to build his life again on this album. In order to do that he needs to find out why everything happened. So he takes a long journey to the most hostile places known to man and in his own spartan way tries to figure everything out. Of course with covid, the story got a new twist.

«The Weight» is my favorite song not only from the album but from your career. What a song! What can you tell me about her?

Nico: We have gotten a lot of good feedback from that song. It is probably the heaviest thing we have ever done. We had this idea to try and make a long and huge song with as little different parts as possible. The song evolves by adding different condiments as it rolls on rather than having a typical verse-chorus structure, just to keep the hypnotism going. I think it turned out good too.

Jaakko: Actually this song was on the verge of being cut off from the album. We had a little trouble getting it to work. Now all I can say is that I am glad we didn’t give up on it. I think it is one the best we’ve made.

You are many musicians and I suppose that sometimes it can be difficult to get everyone in agreement. How does the creative process work at Marianas Rest? What can you comment on working together?

Nico: It is a democracy. We start involving everyone in the writing very early on. We usually have just a piece of an idea, a riff or a verse etc. And after that it’s all hands on deck. I think that helps us not to fall too much in love with our own ideas, since no one has taken too much time working on something alone just to find out that the rest of the band may not be as excited about that particular song.

The songs get broken down and built up a few times, first with the band, then with the band and the producer. I think that way you can see what works and what doesn’t, in our case at least.

Jaakko: We don’t have a mastermind in the band. All of us bring our own influences and ideas and then we start to build towards something that comes from all of us. It takes a lot of talking. Sometimes you feel like the discussion never ends 🙂

Normally the third album is usually a turning point in a band’s career because it partly defines the sound and potential of a band. You guys are released on the fifth album and have done what you want regardless of the criticism. How do you face this evolution? Are you at that point of doing what you want?

Jaakko: Of course it is important to us what the listeners think about the stuff we are doing. At the same time you have to do what feels right. The minute you start to do what someone else wants, it starts to go in the wrong direction. I think we have a lot of things we can get better at in the future. If we try to improve our weaknesses, it eventually will lead into a natural evolution. So if by the fifth album we have managed to stay true to whatever it is that we have been doing, then it has gone as it should.

This is the first album on Napalm Records. How was this alliance forged and how have you been on your first album?

Nico: It was the end of 2019 and we had a party with the band. We tried to convince our singer Jaakko ,who handled the promo letters, to send our old albums to a bunch of record labels that we thought may be a bit too big for us, and ask if they would be interested in a collaboration. We knew it was a long shot because we didn’t have recorded any new demos at that point. Luckily the letters were sent because we did get a reply from Napalm. They asked to hear some demos once we got them done. Eventually we sent them the demos and waited for a response. Time went by and we didn’t hear back from them so we naturally thought the demos were not good enough. But after a month or so someone went through our junkmail folder and there it was, the reply. We thought that we had screwed up and there is no way they would be interested in our band since we couldn’t even reply to a simple e-mail. Thanks to our A&R -guy Sebastian who didn’t give up on us there and then but was still interested in working with us.

The collaboration has been great and we have felt very welcomed to the Napalm family. Such a group of professionals. A whole new world for us.

Being in a band and touring so much is not just going on stage and playing an hour and a half with your teammates and «goodbye very good». In the end, your colleagues are like your family, or your partner, you share the stage, travel, experiences, emotions … What is the best memory of these years «as a family»?

Nico: It’s not one single memory, it’s more about sharing your whole life with the group. You end up going through the shit and the sunshine with these people. For example a few years back we were all going through big changes in our lives. We all were more or less in a state of turbulence and pulled through as a group. Still able to put out music while figuring out our lives.

Jaakko: Hard to pick one memory, because this kind of bond is formed through time and lots of different kinds of situations. Maybe the best thing is the fact that you know you can rely on this weird group of people in all circumstances. If this band ceased to be, I am sure we would still hang together.

On the contrary, complications always appear in these personal relationships, on tours … have you ever had that feeling of sending all the crap, of thinking that what you do is useless? And if so, when?

Nico: Not yet 🙂 I think that day will come eventually.

Jaakko: Of course you get doubts every now and then but I think it mostly is related to the writing phase. At some point you start to feel like everything is shit even though the songs would be grade A. But extreme criticism is a necessary thing because that way you can find the flaws.

What can we expect from Marianas Rest in the future?

Nico: with each album and each milestone, we have tried to get a bit better. So hopefully slightly better albums, slightly better shows and a shit ton of fun times!

Life encourages us to dream, to meet goals that we have in mind. What realistic dreams does Marianas Rest still have that you want to fulfill?

Nico: Well, having a deal with a major label was one of them. Now that that was fulfilled maybe touring the States?

Jaakko: Getting to tour different countries and meeting new people along the way. I think that is what I look forward to.
