Entrevista a Oscar Dronjak, guitarrista de HammerFall: ‘Hemos evolucionado mucho desde el primer disco’

Hola Oscar, gracias por tu tiempo. ¿Qué tal?

Hola, bien. No hay problema.

Hace unos días os vimos en el RockFest BCN. ¿Algún recuerdo destacado del show?

Oh sí… hemos hecho unos cuantos festivals en España en los últimos años, y siempre es una pasada, especialmente el RockFest BCN, que está muy bien organizado, así que siempre es un placer volver. Mis recuerdos son siempre positivos, me encanta tocar en España.

Hablemos de Dominion (2019). Siento que, aunque es un álbum puramente Hammerfall, hay algunas partes más duras, más puramente heavys, principalmente en “Dominion” y “Testify”, mis dos cortes preferidos del disco. ¿Es así o sólo es una sensación mía?

Todo el mundo puede tener sus sensaciones y opiniones del álbum, claro. No digo que estés equivocado, es simplemente que nunca he hecho esa distinción. Hammerfall es una banda de metal y cada canción que escribimos es una canción de heavy metal, pero entiendo lo que dices. No es algo intencionado, simplemente a veces estas cosas pasan.

Mucha gente dice que vuestra música no innova nada. ¿Qué les dirías?

Es obvio que no han escuchado el álbum o alguna de sus canciones. No me importa en absoluto esa gente, debes saber de qué hablas para opinar.

Uno de los temas más sorprendentes en el nuevo álbum es “(We Make) Sweden Rock”. ¿Cómo salió la idea? ¿Qué queríais decir? El video parece un bonito tribute a las bandas nórdicas.

Fue Joacim quien trajo la idea para la letra y el video y pensé que era una gran idea, la amé desde el día uno. Podía ir mal, pero si se hacía bien sería brillante, y así lo hicimos. Creo que pudimos gestionar esa canción, hacerla especial. El tema es importante para nosotros. Obviamente somos suecos, pero también hay muchas bandas que te hacen sentir orgulloso de ser sueco, y queríamos destacarlas. Así que es un tributo a nuestros colegas y hermanos de Suecia.

Déjame decirte que funciona muy bien en directo.

Oh sí. Es algo interesante. La hemos tocado en todos los festivales desde que salió, y es como si se tratase de un tema antiguo en vez de el single más reciente que tenemos. Cae muy bien y a la gente parece gustarle. Parece que tiene más reconocimiento que el de un single normal. Funciona muy bien, y realmente me gusta mucho. Creo que es un tema fiestero perfecto.

Hace años, quizá 15 o 20, leí: “Hammerfall: entre Blind Guardian y Judas Priest”. ¿Estás de acuerdo?

No sé… Blind Guardian nunca han sido una de mis influencias. Los conozco, claro, y los escucho, pero no acaban… no me dan lo que otras bandas, como Judas Priest, que es mi preferida de siempre. Cuando alguien nos compara con ellos es…

Con Blind Guardian he coincidido un par de veces pero no tengo ninguna relación con su música. Yo diría Judas Priest y Accept, o si quieres algo más reciente, Running Wild.

Relacionado con eso, ¿cuales son tus mayores influencias?

¿Las mías?

Sí.

Son Judas Priest, Accept y Stormwitch. Son las que siempre he dicho, desde el primer día. Nunca han cambiado. La verdad es que nada ha cambiado sobre mis influencias. Nunca he dejado de escuchar música que realmente me guste. Por supuesto he escuchado nuevas bandas de heavy metal, pero para mí todo empezó con la escena alemana de heavy metal.

He escuchado todos esos álbumes de tantas formas diferentes. Antes los escuchaba y descubría cosas nuevas, pero es algo que ya no pasa. Ahora los pongo cuando quiero sentir algo concreto, ya sabes. Uso Spotify pero nunca escucho playlists, no me dan la satisfacción que busco. Queiro decir que a veces puede ser guay, a veces podría disfrutar de una playlist, pero si voy a escuchar música durante todo el día, quiero escuchar el álbum, desde el principio hasta el final, tal y como debía ser.

Aunque os hemos visto en el RockFest y os veremos en el Leyendas del Rock, se acaba de anunciar una gira. ¿Pasará por España?

Probablemente. Aún no es 100% seguro, pero estamos intentando hacer España y Francia a la vez, y estaría algo separado del propio tour. Quizá después, quizá antes, no lo sé…

Desde que empezásteis, a finales de los 90, hemos visto varios cambios de formación. Solo Joacim y tú seguís de los originales. ¿Veremos una reunión, quizá para un aniversario?

No, no veo la razón para hacerlo. Podría verlo en 10 años, quizá 15, cuando sintamos que no tenemos nada más que hacer, básicamente, pero ahora mismo los cinco miembros estamos bien y no veo razón para incluir a alguno de aquellos tíos.

Lo hicimos en el pasado, para el 15º aniversario. Decidimos incluir a Stephan para un par de temas del DVD Gates to Valhalla, y también tuvimos a Jesper para hacer un show especial. Podría ver algo así, pero no una reunión como tal.

Ahora que mencionas a Jesper, si no estoy equivocado, Hammerall empezó como un proyecto paralelo de miembros de In Flames. Más allá del DVD, ¿seguís en contacto? ¿Qué relación tiene Hammerfall con In Flames?

 Sí, claro. Quiero decir, nos conocemos desde hace tanto… Cuando empecé Hammerfall pregunté a Jesper que se uniera, ya que era de los pocos que conocía que le gustase el metal melódico, allá por 1993, pero me dijo “no tengo tiempo”. Tocaba en muchas bandas, pero seis meses después vino y me dijo “sólo toco en In Flames, así que puedo tocar en Hammerfall contigo”, y ese es el origen de la banda.

Por supuesto tenemos contacto con ellos. Los vemos en festivales, todos somos de Goteborg… eramos parte importante de la escena hace 20 o 30 años… es guay estar con ellos. A veces es fuera del trabajo, pero todos estamos ocupados, así que es difícil hacerlo.

Pensaba que iba a entrevistar a Joacim, y tenía una pregunta para él, pero creo que también puedo hacértela a ti. Es un juego.  Imaginemos que por alguna razón Joacim tiene que dejar Hammerfall, o pierde la voz o algo así. ¿Quién crees que podría ser un buen reemplazo?

No creo que nadie pueda, para ser honestos. Para la forma que tiene la banda de trabajar ahora sería imposible, no creo que funcionase con nadie más. Así que crucemos los dedos.

¿Cómo salió el templario de la portada de los discos y el propio concepto? ¿Quién tuvo la idea?

 La idea de los templarios y las cruzadas viene de la primera canción que escribí para Hammerfall, “Steel Meets Steel”. La escribí antes de que nadie más se uniera a la banda. Las letras se escribieron antes del propio álbum, y desde el punto de vista de un observador. Para el siguiente álbum, Joacim lo encaminó en “Heeding the call”, en la que está la frase “the templars are back in the streets”, y creo que fue así como evolucionó. Al principio por diversión y luego dándonos cuenta de que era algo guay. Entonces empezamos a usarlo para todo, obviamente.

Sobre las portadas y el icónico personaje que se llama Hector… teníamos una idea, una idea general, Joacim y yo. Le dijimos a Andreas Marshall, que fue quien diseñó la portada de Glory to the Brave (1997). Le dijimos, básicamente, que queríamos una mascota que instantáneamente fuese reconocible como Hammerfall, aún sin logo, título o texto. Si veías a ese tío debías saber que eso era Hammerfall. Es exactamente lo mismo que Eddy de Iron Maiden, es la referencia que teníamos. Por supuesto él sabía que tocamos heavy metal, que las canciones son sobre pelear, caballeros y demás, y ahí vino con el diseño de Hector.

De toda la discografía de Hammerfall, ¿qué canción crees que representa mejor su música?

Eso es muy difícil porque hemos evolucionado mucho desde el primer álbum. Creo que “Riders of the Storm” es la que mejor nos representa.

Habéis girado mucho, pero si pudierais ser cabezas de cartel con otras tres bandas, las que sean, ¿cuáles escogerías?

Las bandas que escogería no son bandas con las que podríamos ser cabezas de cartel, obviamente, per diría Twisted Sister en la era del Come Out and Play; me encantaría tener a Kiss de la era del Revenge y… digamos, Mercyful Fate cuando Don’t Break the Oath. Y todas las bandas tocarían 90 minutos, no menos.

Hi Oscar, and thanks for your time. How are you?

No worries, no problem at all.

A few days ago we saw you again in RockFest Barcelona. Any memoires about the show?

Oh yes… festivals in Spain we’ve done a few in the last years and it’s always a real blast for us, specially RockFest Barcelona, which is so well organized festival, so it’s always a pleasure to come back. My memories are always positive, I love playing in Spain

Let’s talk about “Dominion”. I feel that, although is a true Hammerfall album, there are tougher parts, mainly in “Dominion” and “Testify”, my two favorites songs in the album. Is it just a feeling of mine?

Everybody can have their feelings and opinions about the album, of course. I’m not saying you’re wrong, it’s just I never made that distinction before. Hammerfall is a metal band and every song we do is a heavy metal song, but I get what you mean. It’s not something intentional, this things happen sometimes

Many people say your music is not innovative at all. What would you tell them?

It’s obvious to me that they haven’t listened to the album or any song. I don’t care at all about people like that, you have to have some knowledge about what you’re talking about.

One of the most surprising songs in the album I “(We Make) Sweden Rock”. How was written? What did you want to say? The videoclip seems to be a nice tribute to Nordic bands

This was Joacim bringing the idea for the lyrics and the video and I really thought it was a great idea, I loved the idea since day one. It could go wrong, but if you do it right it would be brilliant, and that’s what we did. I think we could managed that song, make it special. The subject is important to us. Obviously we are Swedish, but there are so many Swedish bands that make you be proud of being swede, and we wanted to spotlight these people as well. So this song is our tribute to our fellows and brothers from Sweden.

Let me tell you it works very well on stage.

Oh yeah. That is an interesting thing. We played it on every festival since it was released, and it feels like and older song rather than the most recent single we have. It goes down really well, people were interested in the song. It feels it has more recognition that a normal single of an album. It worked very well, and I really like the song. I think it’s a perfect party song.

Many years ago, maybe 15 or 20, I read: “Hammerfal: between Blind Guardian and Judas Priest”. Do you agree with this definition?

I don’t know… Blind Guardian has never been one of my influences. I know them, of course, and I listen to them, but I don’t really… they don’t give anything like other bands like Judas Priest, which is my all time favorite. So anytime anyone compare us to them is like… Blind Guardian, I’ve met them a couple of times but I don’t have any relation with their music. I would rather say Judas Priest and accept, in that case, or if you want a more recent band, Running Wild.

Related to the question before, which are your main influences?

My  own influences?

Yes.

It’s Judas Priest, Accept and Stormwitch. Those are the ones I’ve always said, from day one. Those have never changed. Nothing has really changed about the influences that I have. I have never stopped listening to music I really like. Of course I have listened to new heavy metal bands, but it all started, for me, with the German heavy metal scene.

I’ve listened to all the albums in so many different ways. Before I was listening to them and discovering new things every time, but that doesn’t really happen anymore. Now I put them when I want to get a certain feeling, you know. I use Spotify but I never listen playlists, they don’t give me the satisfaction that I want. I mean, sometimes it can be cool, sometimes I could enjoy playlists, but if I’m gonna listen music for a whole day, I want to hear the album, from start to finish, the way they were supposed to be

Although we’ve seen you in the rock fest and will see you in Leyendas del Rock, will the proper tour come to Spain, besides festivals?

Probably. It’s not 100% yet, but we’re trying to do Spain and France together, and that would be a bit separated from the actual tour. Maybe afterwards, maybe before, I don’t know… this is a long overdue for us to get back to Spain.

Since you started, in the late 90s, we’ve seen some line up changes, only Joacim and you still from the first line up. Will it be possible to see a reunion, maybe for an anniversary?

No, I don’t see the reason for doing that. I could see that 10 years from now, maybe 15, when we feel we’ve nothing else to do, basically, but right now the five members are doing good and I don’t see a reason for including any of those guys again.

We have, in the past, for the 15^th year anniversary, we included Stephan for a while, for a couple of songs for a DVD called Gates to Valhalla, and we had also Jesper to make this a special show. I could see something like that, but never a reunion like that.

Now that you have mentioned Jesper, if I’m not wrong, Hammerfall started as a side project of some In Flames members. Besides the DVD, do you still have any contact with them? How’s the relation between HammerFall and In Flames?

Yes, of course. I mean, we have known each other for so long… When I started Hammerfall, I asked Jesper to join me, because he was one of the only people I knew who liked melodic metal, back in 1993, and he said “I don’t have time right now”, he played in too many bands, but about 6 months later he came back and said “I only have In Flames, now, so I can play in Hammerfall with you”, and that was the origin of the band for us.

Of course  we have contact with them, We see them in festivals, we are all from Gothemburg, we were big part of the scene, 20 or 30 years ago… it’s really nice to hang out with them. Sometime we do it outside of work, but everybody is busy so it’s rare to do it.

As I thought I was going to interview Joacim, I had a question for him, but I can do it to you also. Let’s do something difficult. Let’s imagine that, for something wicked or bizarre, Joacim has to leave the band or loses his voice or whatever. Who do you think could be a good replacement?

I don’t think anybody can, to be honest. The way the band is working right now it would be impossible, I don’t think it could work with anyone else. So let’s keep our fingers crossed.

How did the Templar on the albums’ artowork came out? Who had the idea?

The idea of the templars and the crusades came from the first song I ever wrote for Hammerfall, “Steel Meets Steel”. It was written before anybody was in the band except from me. The lyrics were made before the album itself, and from an observing point of view. And for the next album Joacim sort of pointed to that in “Heeding the Call”, where there’s a line that says “the templars are back on the streets”, and I think it was like that how it evolved, at the beginning for fan but then realizing it was something pretty cool. Then we started using it for everything, obviously.

For the covers, the iconic character, Hector is his name… we had an idea, a general idea, Joacim and myself. We told Andreas Marshall, who painted the Glory to the Brave (1997) cover. We told him, basically, we would like to have a mascot instantly recognizable as Hammerfall, even if it had no logo, no title or no text at all. So if you see this guy, you should know this is Hammerfall. Exactly the same as Eddy for Iron Maiden, that was the reference we had. Of course he knew we play heavy metal music, that the songs were about fighting, knights and stuff, and that’s when he came with the design of Hector.

Of all Hammerfall discography, which song do you thing best represents Hammerfall’s music?

That’s really difficult because we’ve progressed so much since the first album… I guess “Riders of the storm” is the one that best represents us.

You’ve toured a lot, but if you could headline a tour with any 3 other bands (active or not, alive or dead), which 3 bands would you choose?

The bands I would choose wouldn’t be bands we could headline, obviously, but I would say Twisted Sister on the Come out and Play era; I would love to have had Kiss on the Revenge era; and, let’s say, Mercyful Fate on the Don’t break the Oath era. And all the bands would play 90 minutes, not less.
