Entrevista a Petter Hjerpe, vocalista de Mad Hatter: ‘No somos una típica banda de asesinos de dragones’

¡Hola! ¡Y gracias por mostrar interés en nosotros!

Espero que todos y vuestras familias estéis bien ¿En qué situación os encontráis en vuestro país? ¿Cómo estáis viviendo esta situación? 

Suecia está abierta, pero algunas partes del sistema están cerradas. Como la secundaria y la universidad. La escuela está abierta, por ejemplo. Pero en todas partes tenemos reglas como no demasiadas personas en un solo lugar o mantener la distancia en las áreas públicas, etc. Pero muchas personas mayores se han visto muy afectadas por el virus. Afortunadamente, en general, estamos bien, ya que la población de Suecia es baja y el país es bastante grande. Estamos dispersos en el campo y viviendo lejos el uno del otro.

El hecho de sacar este nuevo trabajo en plena crisis sanitaria mundial tiene sus pros y sus contras. Está claro que de momento no va a poder ser posible realizar la presentación en vivo pero por otro lado, con una buena promoción, hará que la gente pueda escucharlo con más tranquilidad en casa. ¿Qué opináis al respecto? ¿Habéis tenido que cancelar muchos compromisos o aún no estaba definido debido a la salida del disco? ¿Habrá gira española? 

Sí, no tocaremos en vivo, como dijiste, pero creemos que la gente escuchará más música en casa, así que es importante que, como banda, nos mostremos en línea. Estar activo en las redes sociales, etc. e intentar entretener a nuestros fans desde lejos. No teníamos conciertos confirmados antes de que esto sucediera, pero teníamos algunas ideas sobre dónde tocar y qué queríamos. ¡Pero entonces esto sucedió! Todo está en espera ahora. ¡Especialmente apuntamos a España y tal vez una gira porque nuestro sello está allí y también tenemos muchos fans! ¡Una gira sería lo correcto para nosotros!

En Pieces of Reality (2020) habéis incluido mayor orquestación y pomposidad a las canciones, aportando algo de novedad a vuestro sonido más clásico. Dada la importancia que tienen estos arreglos en las nuevas canciones ¿Cabe la posibilidad de incluir a un teclista? Disculpa si te confieso que en ocasiones se me hace extraño en directo escuchar los teclados sampleados.

Sí, pero un teclista no puede reproducir todo lo que tenemos en el álbum de todos modos. Es como un teclado de cuatro capas a la vez, por lo que incluso si tuviéramos un teclista, no podría reproducirlo en vivo. Por qué no tenemos es porque principalmente ¡Es difícil encontrar uno! y segundo, es más fácil mantenerse juntos como una banda siendo menos personas.

Reconozco que a pesar de notarse una evolución en el sonido y mayor trabajo, me costó algo más entrar a fondo en las composiciones. Vuestro primer disco fue un gran descubrimiento hace un par de años, además de ser de más fácil asimilación. Siendo las de Pieces of Reality más elaboradas, ¿qué canciones de este disco crees que funcionarán mejor en directo? ¿Cuál es la respuesta de vuestros seguidores?

Creo que las canciones del primer álbum son muy similares en cierto sentido. Tienen el mismo ambiente y tienen la misma estructura. Si escuchaste una canción, te resultará más fácil entender el resto de las canciones. El nuevo álbum es más versátil. Las canciones son más diferentes entre sí, creo. Si estamos hablando de que canciones de este álbum son más fáciles de pasar al directo, supongo que quizás «Master of the night». Esa canción no se basa en teclados y el coro, es perfecta para que la audiencia cante. Lo mismo con «The Valley». Allí no tenemos ningún teclado en absoluto.

En tu opinión, ¿En qué situación se encuentra la salud del power metal? Tiene fama de funcionar mejor en Europa que en otros continentes. ¿Crees que es un estilo exclusivo para los heavies europeos?

Parece que el power metal no es tan popular ahora como lo fue hace veinte años. Pero también siente que todavía tiene sus viejos fanáticos. Tuvimos un streaming donde respondimos preguntas de los fanáticos hace un par de semanas y les preguntamos a la gente de los EEUU que pensaban de esto. Dijeron que el power metal era muy underground en los Estados Unidos. Así que creo que en Europa el power metal está más en el corazón de las personas que en el resto del mundo. Tenemos esa mitología aquí. Fantasía, caballeros, vikingos, etc., es parte de nuestra historia.

La primera impresión al ver las fotos promocionales del disco debut y el videoclip de «The Gunslinger» es que la escenografía y el vestuario iría acorde al personaje del sombrerero. En cambio la imagen es más sobria. ¿Está hecho a conciencia para priorizar la música a la imagen? 

Sí, aún queremos ser una banda sin tener que disfrazarnos todo el tiempo (incluso si fuera genial ir all-in). Así que solo agregamos un toque del sombrerero. Así pues la música tiene prioridad sobre la imagen que tenemos. Hablamos un poco de eso cuando creamos la banda, pero todos sentimos que primero nos enfocaríamos en la música y trataríamos de crear buena música, dejando que el sombrerero fuera una especie de mascota o algo así. Tal vez para hacer lo que Maiden está haciendo con Eddie. Él está en el álbum pero no están vestidos como él.

¿“Winter Time” fue un divertimento navideño o algo que es probable que se siga haciendo en un futuro?

Grabamos esa canción solo por diversión y teníamos la intención de lanzarla solo en nuestra página de Facebook para felicitar Navidad a nuestros fans. Pero nuestro sello quería lanzarlo como un sencillo digital, por lo que se hizo más grande de lo que pensamos. Supongo que haremos algo similar en el futuro, no hemos hablado de eso, pero somos escritores de canciones creativos, por lo que nunca sabréis lo que se nos ocurrirá.

En vuestro reciente videoclip de “Ignite” vemos a Pette tocando la guitarra, algo no habitual en el resto, incluso en el video publicado en vuestra actuación en el Gineta Rock tampoco se le ve con ella. ¿Es únicamente un recurso para el estudio? ¿Cabe la posibilidad que en un futuro sea un elemento habitual la utilización de dos guitarras?

¡Yo (Petter) toco la guitarra más de lo que canto en casa! Pero no soy el cantante más experimentado, así que cuando tocamos en vivo quiero moverme libremente y concentrarme en el canto. También creo que es más divertido ver a un líder que se mueve que quedarse quieto con su guitarra. Pero me gusta tocar la guitarra más de lo que me gusta cantar, jeje, así que cuando ensayamos me gusta coger la guitarra y tocar. Hemos hablado de utilizar mi guitarra en partes donde no canto en vivo. Cuando Dennis está haciendo un solo, puedo tocar la guitarra y al empezar a cantar simplemente la cuelgo en mi espalda.

Dicho videoclip lo grabasteis por separado, se os ve a cada uno confinados en casa. ¿Qué complejidad supuso su creación? ¿Disponíais de todo el material para la grabación?

No fue tan difícil como parece. Todos tocamos junto con la canción original del álbum. Todos a una. Luego simplemente editamos las piezas juntas.

Cambiando un poco de tema, no demasiado, para referirnos al protagonista de vuestras historias ¿Cómo llegásteis al personaje del sombrerero loco? ¿Qué es lo que lo hace tan atrayente? ¿Fue antes el libro de Lewis Carroll o la película de Disney?

Queríamos un personaje que se adaptara a nuestro sonido y enfoque. No somos una típica «banda de asesinos de dragones», pero nos centramos más en la fantasía oscura, halloween, locura o cuentos de hadas que dan miedo. En el primer álbum escribí una canción sobre Mad Hatter y luego escribí otra. Así que teníamos dos canciones sobre el sombrerero loco. Luego decidimos cogerlo como nombre de la banda.

Así que supongo que el personaje está más inspirado en la versión del videojuego American McGee’s Alice. Es una versión adulta y más espeluznante del sombrerero.

¿Qué opinión tienes sobre las versiones realizadas bajo la visión de Tim Burton?

Me encanta el estilo y el humor de Tim Burton en sus películas. Pero para ser sincero, creo que su versión de la película está controlada por Disney. Demasiado lejos de la fuente y demasiado CGI (*) . Si Burton hiciera la película como lo hacía en los años 80 y más fiel al libro, sería increíble. Las películas tienen sus momentos, pero en general es de acción-disney para mi gusto. Lo quiero más espeluznante y más como un sueño.

Durante los periodos de giras y promociones ¿Qué música suena en los desplazamientos? ¿Películas o lectura? ¿Cuál es vuestro último e interesante descubrimiento?

A Alfred (batería) le gusta el technical brutal death metal. Los ritmos de batería rápidos, complejos y agresivos son todo lo que escucha de él. Afortunadamente para nosotros, a él también le gusta tocar power metal.

Dennis (guitarra) está más interesado en todo tipo de música. Principalmente escucha música con buena mezcla ya que está mezclando mucha música por su cuenta. A menudo escucha cosas que ha realizado y las compara con otras.

Magnus (bajo) juega a algunos juegos de zombies y escucha podcasts.

Yo (Petter, voz) leo principalmente cosas. Libros (mucho de Stephen King) y si escucho algo, es a menudo es la etapa clásica del power metal. También juego a videojuegos. Estoy muy metido en la serie Zelda.

Hi! And thank you for showing interest in us! 

I hope that all of you and your families are well. In what situation are you in your country? How are you living this situation? ¿

Sweden is open but some parts of the system is closet. Like high school and college. Regular school is open for example. But everywhere we have rules like; not too many people at one place or keeping distance public areas etc. But a lot of older people have been hit hard by the virus. But luckily, overall, we are doing fine since the population of Sweden is low and the country is quite big. We are spread out and living far from each other in the countryside.

The fact of taking out this new job in the midst of the global health crisis has its pros and cons. It is clear that at the moment it will not be possible to make the presentation live, but on the other hand, with a good promotion, it will make it easier for people to listen to it at home. What do you think about it? Have you had to cancel many commitments or was not defined yet due to the release of the album? Will there be a Spanish tour?

Yeah, we won’t be playing live, like you said, but we think people will listen more to music at home so it is important that we, as a band, show ourselves online. Being active on social media etc and trying to entertain our fans from distant. We had no gigs confirmed before this happened but we had some ideas where to play and what we wanted. But then this happened! So it’s all on hold now. Especially we took aim for Spain and maybe a tour because our label is there and we have a lot of fans there as well! A tour would be the right thing for us!

In Pieces of Reality (2020) you have included greater orchestration and pomposity to the songs, bringing something new to your most classic sound. Given the importance of these arrangements in new songs, is it possible to include a keyboard player? Sorry if I confess that sometimes it seems strange to me to listen live to the sampled keyboards.

Yes, but a keyboard player can’t play everything we have on the album anyway. It’s like a four layers keyboard at a time so even if we had a keyboard player he wouldn’t be able to play it live. Why we don’t have a keyboard player is because at first; It’s hard to find one! and second; it’s easier to keep together as a band the less people you are. 

I admit that despite noticing an evolution in sound and more work, it took me a bit longer to get into the compositions in depth. Your first album was a great discovery a couple of years ago, in addition to being easier to assimilate. Being the most elaborate of Pieces of Reality, which songs on this album do you think will work best live? What is the response from your followers?

I think the songs on the first album is very similar in one way. They have the same vibe and have the same structure. If you heard one song you will find it easier to understand the rest of the songs. The new album is more versatile. The songs are more different from each other I think. If we are talking songs on this album that is easiest to transfer live I would guess ”Master of the night” maybe. That song doesn’t rely on keyboards and the chorus is perfect for the audience to sing along with. The same with ”The Valley”. There we don’t have any keyboards at all.

In your opinion, where is the health of power metal? It is reputed to function better in Europe than on other continents. Do you think it is an exclusive style for European heavies?

It feels like power metal is not so popular now as it was for twenty years ago. But it also feels that it still got its old fans. We had a live stream where we answered questions from fans a couple of weeks ago and we asked people from the US what they thought of this. They said that power metal was very underground in the US. So I think power metal is more in people’s heart in Europe than in the rest of the world. We have that mythology here. Fantasy, knights, vikings etc. It’s a part of our history here.

The first impression when seeing the promotional photos of the debut album and the video clip for «The Gunslinger» is that the scenery and costumes would go according to the character of the hatter. On the other hand, the image is more sober. Is it done conscientiously to prioritize music over the image?

Yes, We still want to be a band without having to dress up all the time (even if it would be cool to go ”all-in”). So we just added a touch of the hatter. So the music is prioritized over the image we have. We talked a bit of it when we started the band but we all felt that we would first focus on the music and try to create good music and let the hatter be a kind of mascot or something. Maybe to do like Maiden is doing with Eddie. He is on the album but they are not dressed up as him.

Was «Winter Time» a Christmas fun or something that is likely to continue in the future?

We recorded that song just for fun and meant to release it only on our facebook page. To say Merry Christmas to our fans. But our label wanted to release it as a digital single so it became bigger than we ment. I guess we will do something similar in the future, we haven’t talked about it but we are creative song writers so you’ll never know what we will come up with. 

In your recent video clip of “Ignite” we see Pette playing the guitar, something not usual in the rest, even in the video published in your performance at Gineta Rock, he is not seen with her either. Is it only a resource for study? Is it possible that in the future the use of two guitars will be a common element?

I, Petter, actually play guitar more than I sing at home! But I am not the most experienced singer so when we play live I want to move around freely and focus on the singing. I also think it’s more fun to watch a frontman that moves around than just standing still with his guitar. But I like to play guitar more than I like to sing, hehe, so when we rehearse I like to pick up the guitar and play along. We have talked about me using the guitar in parts where I don’t sing live. When Dennis is doing a solo I could play the guitar and when I start to sing I’ll just hang the guitar on my back. 

You recorded this video clip separately, you are each confined at home. How complex was your creation? Did you have all the material for the recording?

It wasn’t as hard as it looks. We all played along with the original song from the album. One at a time. Then we just cut the pieces together. 

Changing the subject a little, not too much, to refer to the protagonist of your stories. How did you get to the character of the mad hatter? What is it that makes it so appealing? Was it Lewis Carroll’s book or Disney movie before?

We wanted a character that suited our sound and approach. We are not a typical ”dragon-slayer-band” but focus more on dark fantasy, halloween, crazy or like fairy tales that are scary. On the first album I wrote a song about Mad Hatter and then I wrote another one. So we had two songs about the mad hatter. Then we decided to take that name and use it as a band name.

So I guess the character is more inspired by a video game version of the mad hatter, American’s Macgees Alice in wonderland. It’s an adult and creepier version of the hatter.

What is your opinion on the versions made under the vision of Tim Burton?

I love Tim Burton’s style and mood in his movies. But to be honest I think his version of the movie is Disney-controlled. Too far from the source and too much CGI. If Burton did the movie like he did with his movies in the 80’s and more closer to the book it would be awesome.  The movies have their moments but overall it’s to action-disney packed for my taste. I want it creepier and more dream-like.

During touring and promotion periods, what music plays on the go? Movies or reading? What is your latest and interesting discovery?

Alfred (drums) likes more technical brutal death metal. Fast, complex, aggressive drum beats is all you hear from him. Luckily for us he likes to play power metal too.

Dennis (guitars) is more into all types of music. Mostly he listens to music with good mixing since he is mixing a lot of music on his own. He often listens to stuff he has mixed and compares it to other mixes.

Magnus (bass) played some cell phone-zombie games and listened to podcasts.

I (Petter, vocals) mostly read stuff. Books (a lot of Stephen King) and if I listen to something it is often the classic era of power metal. I also play video games. I am very into the Zelda-series.
