Entrevista a Pure Reason Revolution: ‘Teníamos cuentas pendientes y con esto saldamos las deudas’

PRR: ¡Hola!

Después de 10 años, puede ser que regreséis con vuestro mejor álbum hasta la fecha. ¿Cómo os sentís al respecto? ¿Estáis orgullosos del resultado final?

PRR: Muchas gracias. Nos sentimos orgullosos y emocionados de que finalmente se publique y poder ver lo que nuestros fans comenten de él. ¡Ojalá sea tan positivo como tu opinión!

«Eupnea» recoge piezas de vuestros primeros tres álbumes y los condensa en un álbum precioso, muy mimado. ¿Fue vuestra idea inicial o es solo un paso adelante en vuestra carrera?

Jon: Después del ciclo natural de mi álbum con Bullet Height, primero me tomé un descanso, luego me aventuré tentativamente al estudio… lo que vino de las demos iniciales no sonaba como en el pasado, era más progresivo y más como PRR. Fue solo una progresión natural y así salieron las cosas. No hay una gran decisión consciente el hacerlo de una manera particular. PRR tenía unos asuntos pendientes y esta es nuestra primera declaración al respecto.

Como banda, ¿cómo definís este nuevo álbum? ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre las letras y las historias detrás de la música?

Chloe: Mi hija nació muy prematuramente y no podía respirar bien. Tuvimos unas semanas en cuidados intensivos, y fue un momento emocional bastante loco.

Gran parte del contexto lírico del álbum refleja este período turbulento. Cada día nos enfrentamos a nuevos desafíos mientras ella luchaba simplemente por respirar.

¿Qué me podéis decir sobre Eupnea y su proceso de creación? ¿Alguna anécdota que merezca ser compartida con vuestros fans?

Jon: Greg Jong, el guitarrista original de PRR, vino a Berlín. Colaboramos en un par de pistas. No habíamos trabajado juntos durante 15 años, pero los resultados fueron brillantes.

Chloe vino a Berlín durante todo el verano para hacer voces. Estaba en un hotel horrible en el camino del estudio. El hotel no tenía aire acondicionado, así que cada noche dormía con 8 ventiladores alrededor de la cama creando un vórtice de aire tan poderoso que su intensidad casi la levantaba de la cama.

Y sobre el artwork que ciertamente me parece increíble, ¿qué me podéis decir?

Chloe: Una tarde, cuando estaba en el hospital con mi hija, una enfermera dijo: «es pequeña pero fuerte como un pequeño león»… esa noche llegué tarde a casa, después de sentarme al lado de su incubadora, y vi en internet esta pintura de mi amiga Jill Doherty. Sentí que respiraba como un león y realmente me conectó. A medida que avanzaba el material musical, le pregunté a Jill si podía usarlo. Adoro la pintura y la habilidad que conlleva.

Jessie ahora es una niña sana de dos años 🙂

Han pasado casi 10 años desde que publicasteis el controvertido Hammer and Anvil, ¿cómo ha envejecido el álbum y cómo lo veis ahora, con la cabeza fría?

Jon: Todavía me complace que hayamos sacado ese disco. Aprecio Amor Vincit Omnia y Hammer and Anvil, de alguna manera explotó nuestra base de fans progresivos. Ahora estamos de vuelta para continuar donde lo dejamos… Creo que Eupnea tiene elementos de todos los álbumes, pero probablemente se sienta más cerca de The Dark Third.

Pongamos las etiquetas a un lado y hagámoslo más fácil: si tuvierais que elegir una canción de vuestro catálogo para presentar vuestra música a las personas que no la conocen, ¿cuál sería y por qué?

Jon: Actualmente elegiría «Silent Genesis». ¿Por qué? Encapsula de qué se trata y muestra los últimos esfuerzos de producción: personifica sin límites, sin reglas musicales, deja que la música vaya a donde quiere ir, trae las texturas que tanto deseas … Señala elementos de algunas de nuestras influencias básicas. ; de Pink Floyd, a Air, a Fleetwood Mac, a Smashing Pumpkins …

Si no me equivoco, actualmente estáis trabajando como dúo, con todas sus ventajas y desventajas. Me imagino que el nivel de confianza entre vosotros es una de las cosas más importantes de la banda. ¿Qué es bueno y qué es menos bueno entre Chloe y Jon?

Jon: Humm… sí, supongo que somos un dúo, pero una  banda para las actuaciones en vivo. Si tocamos en los Estados Unidos, estoy seguro de que Greg Jong se unirá a nosotros. Siendo un dúo, es agradable y fácil coordinar decisiones, planes, etc. Además, por supuesto, tenemos un buen nivel de confianza. Somos buenos amigos, es una situación laboral muy cómoda y eso es algo que ambos valoramos mucho.

¿Jamie Willcox y Paul Glover no han querido ser parte de esta nueva etapa de la banda? ¿O simplemente habéis querido acercaros a la banda de una manera diferente?

Jon: Todavía somos una banda bastante desconocida y no recibimos grandes cifras cuando tocamos en directo. Las cosas tienen que funcionar en un nivel práctico: Chloe está en Londres y yo en Berlín. Ensayar en Londres es muy caro y Berlín es mucho más barato, así que elegimos Berlín y músicos de Berlín.

Durante estos 10 años ambos habéis trabajado en otras bandas. ¿Cómo vais a abordar esta realidad? ¿Continuareis con ellos o os centraréis al 100% en Pure Reason Revolution?

Chloe: Los otros dos proyectos continuarán, pero para mí PRR es la prioridad.

Casi 20 años de carrera, si miráis hacia atrás, ¿tenéis sensación de vértigo? ¿Os imaginasteis aquí donde estáis ahora?

Chloe: Tengo la sensación de, wooow, ¿cómo ha volado el tiempo? Firmé mi primer contrato discográfico a los 18 (hace 22 años) con música de Warner. ¡Eso es como toda una vida! La industria ha cambiado mucho en ese tiempo.

Además de publicar este nuevo álbum, habéis anunciado algún que otro concierto. Creo que han pasado 8 años desde que tocasteis juntos por última vez. ¿Qué os emociona más, publicar el álbum o tocar en vivo?

Jon: La actuación en vivo es divertida, pero para mí la magia ocurre en el estudio.

De momento solo habéis confirmado algunas fechas, ¿qué planeáis hacer para presentar este nuevo álbum?

Tenemos una gira europea de 10 fechas actualmente reservada. Esto será en octubre.

After 10 years you may return with your best album to date. How do you feel about it? Are you proud of the final result?

Thank you very much. Feel proud and excited to get it finally released and to see what our audience makes of it. Hopefully it’s as positive as your reaction!

Eupnea picks up pieces from your first three albums and condenses it into a precious album, very spoiled. Was it your initial idea or is it just a step forward in your career?

After the album cycle with Bullet Height, firstly I took a break, then I tentatively ventured into the studio…what came from the initial demos didn’t sound like bullet height, but more progressive and more like PRR. It was just a natural progression and how things came out. No huge conscious decision to make it a particular way. PRR had unfinished business and this is our first statement back.

As a band, how do you define this new album? What can you tell us about the lyrics and the stories behind the music?

My daughter was born very prematurely and couldn’t breathe properly. We had a few weeks in intensive care and i It was a pretty crazy emotional time.

A lot of the album’s lyrical context reflects this turbulent period. Each day we faced new challenges as she battled to breathe.

What can you tell me about Eupnea and its creation process? Any anecdote that deserves to be shared with your fans?

A bunch of it was me jamming with the computer in the studio. Chloe and I would also fling vocals across Europe via internet,…1000’s of vocals were uploaded.

Greg Jong – the original guitarist from PRR came over to Berlin. We collaborated on a couple of tracks. We’d not worked together for 15 years, but the results were brilliant and it was creative fireworks.

Chloe came over to Berlin during a roasting summer to do vocals. She was in a crummy hotel down the road from the studio. The hotel had no aircon, so each evening she slept with around 8 fans creating a vortex of air so powerful, its intensity almost elevated her off the bed!

And about the artwork that certainly seems me amazing. What can you tell me?

One evening when in hospital with my daughter a nurse said, «she’s tiny but strong like a little lion“…that night I got home late, after sitting next to her incubator, and saw online this painting by my friend Jill Doherty. I felt it was a lion breathing and it really connected with me. As musical material progressed I asked Jill if I could use it. I adore the painting and the skill involved with it too.

Jessie is now a healthy 2-year-old 🙂

It’s been almost 10 years since you published the controversial Hammer and Anvil. How has the album aged and how do you see it now, with a cool head?

I’m still pleased we put that record out. I appreciate AVO and Hammer and Anvil, somewhat exploded our Proggy fanbase, but it was all meant to be. Now we’re back to continue where we left off… I think Eupnea has elements from all the albums, but probably sits closest to The Dark Third.

Let’s put the labels aside and make it easier: if you had to choose a song from your catalog to present your music to people who don’t know it, what would it be and why?

Currently I’d pick “Silent Genesis”. Why? It encapsulates what were about and shows out latest production efforts: it personifies no boundaries, no musical rules, let the music go where it wants to go, bring in the textures you so desire….It hints at elements from some of our staple influences; from Pink Floyd, to Air, to Fleetwood Mac, to Smashing Pumpkins…

If I am not wrong, you are currently working as a duo, with all its advantages and disadvantages. I imagine that the level of trust between them is one of the most important things in the band. What is good and what is less good between Chloe and Jon?

Humm… yes I suppose we are a duo, with a band for live purposes. If we play in the States I’m sure Greg Jong will join us. Being a duo, it’s nice and easy to coordinate decisions, plans etc plus of course we have a good level of trust. We’re good friends, It’s a very comfortable working situation and something we both greatly value.

Jamie Willcox and Paul Glover have not wanted to be part of this new stage of the band? Or have you simply wanted to approach the band in a different way?

We’re still a rather unknown band and we don’t get big live fees. Things have to work on a practical level: Chloe Is in in London and I’m in Berlin. Rehearing in London was super expensive and Berlin much cheaper, so we chose Berlin and musicians from Berlin.

During these 10 years you have both worked in other bands. How are you going to approach this reality? Will you continue with them or will you focus 100% on Pure Reason Revolution?

Both of the other projects will continue, but for me PRR is the priority.

Almost twenty years of career, if you look back, do you have a feeling of vertigo? Did you imagine here where you are now?

I have a feeling of, wow, where did the time go! I signed my first record deal at 18 (22 years ago) with Warner music. That feels like a lifetime ago! The industry has changed so much in that time.

Apart from publishing this new album you have announced a concert. I think it’s been 8 years since you played together. What makes you more excited, publish the album or play live?

Live performance is fun, but for me the magic happens in the studio.

At the moment you have only confirmed a few dates, what do you plan to do to present this new album?

We have a 10 date European tour currently being booked. This will be in October.
