Entrevista a Rex, guitarrista de Nightqueen: ‘Puedes sacar un discazo y tener muy buenas críticas, pero no puedes llegar a ningún lado sin una promoción masiva y un booker de confianza’

Hola Rex, en primer lugar, muchas felicidades, creo que vuestro nuevo álbum Seduction ha seducido a la mayoría de gente que lo escucha. ¿Estás contento con la opinión defans y prensa?

Hola Jordi, gracias por esta entrevista. Sí, estamos muy satisfechos con los comentarios vertidos sobre nuestro nuevo álbum. Sabíamos que habíamos grabado un buen disco, pero teníamos curiosidad por las críticas de la prensa. Así que nos alegramos después de leerlas. Es una buena recompensa después de un año de duro trabajo.

Me gustaría resaltar dos cosas fantásticas que me gustan especialmente en Nightqueen. Por un lado, tenemos una labor de composición fantástica. Por otro lado, la voz de Hellen Heart. ¿Dónde encontrasteis a una cantante como Hellen?

Supongo que vino de las estrellas (risas). Después del terrible accidente de Keely Larreina pensé en abandonar el proyecto. Como banda decidimos darnos una oportunidad más y comenzamos a buscar una nueva cantante. Pero tuvimos otro cambio en la formación durante este mismo período. Los nuevos fichajes y su capacidad técnica y musical un poco marcarían la línea a seguir de la nueva formación. Recibimos muchas solicitudes. Era como estar en las selecciones de Pop Idol o Factor X. Después de meses de escuchar audiciones me puse en contacto con Hellen a través de un conocido mutuo. Conocía su trabajo y su voz, pero nunca pensé que le gustaría cantar nuestras canciones. Y de repente, ella se plantó delante de mi. Fue entonces cuando vi muchas más posibilidades en la composición de las canciones de nuestro grupo, simplemente porque con su voz ella podía cantar todo lo que quisiera.Hellen proviene del mundo del souly el pop, pero su voz es tan abrumadora que le pedí que no renunciara a sus características personales y que mantuviera el toque soul a la hora de cantar.

Canciones como «Energy» realmente lo tienen todo para haceros una banda importante en Europa … ¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas en Seduction?

La verdad, me gustan todas las canciones del álbum, pero hay algunas que creo que me gustan un poco más. Temas como “Wall of Sorrow”, “Fuel the Fire” y “Return to Wonderland”. “Energy”, de hecho, es una canción muy potente. El objetivo era escribir una canción de directo que invitase al público a la fiesta. Usamos todos los elementos posibles para hacer que la canción fuera lo más potente posible. Espero que hayamos tenido éxito en nuestro objetivo.

Otra canción que me encanta es «Wall of Sorrow». Con una fantástica voz y hermosas guitarras en una canción con mucho gancho. ¿Podemos hablar de metal sinfónico en este álbum?

Bueno, esta es una pregunta que podemos discutir durante muchas horas sin encontrar una respuesta satisfactoria. En mi opinión, el metal sinfónico es simplemente heavy metal. La batería y las guitarras pesadas y potentes en combinación con diferentes elementos de la música clásica orquestal. Estos elementos son comunes en cada una de nuestras canciones. Pero también usamos sonidos modernos como las melodías popen “Termination” e “In Flames”, el órgano Hammond en “Wall of Sorrow” o el piano rockero en otras canciones. Así que dejamos que la prensa decida sobre nuestro estilo. Si te gustan las canciones el estilo no es lo importante. Nuestro estilo musical es probablemente demasiado amplio para ser encasillado, es como si lo metieras en una caja (risas).

En la power ballad «Fuel the Fire» los hermosos arreglos musicales de la canción me hacen pensar en Meat Loaf. ¿Querías sonar a lo Meat Loaf-Jim Steinman de forma predeterminada?

Esa no era la intención, al menos no en la fase inicial. Paddy nos convenció para escribir una balada. Buscando una buena temática para las letras de la canción, esta vez decidimos apostar por la seducción. Mientras nos reíamos de ello, nos preguntamos cómo serían los movimientos de Hellen en el escenario con letras “calientes” y provocativas. Así que traté de escribir de forma que fuera lo más cachonda y seductora posible (risas). La melodía vocal que surgió en mi cabeza es lo que ahora puedes escuchar en la canción. Las influencias del rock estadounidense comenzaron a pesar sobre los arreglos musicales. Sólo entonces nos dimos cuenta de que iba todo hacia el estilo de Jim Steinman. También le pedí a Hellen que la cantara lo más caliente posible para que la letra sonara lo más convincente posible. El resultado final fue que la canción era muy buena y se decidió que iba a estar en el disco.

Echando un vistazo a tu biografía veo que la banda tiene tres discos anteriores a Seduction, pero en un momento dado pasó algo y decidiste cambiar la mayor parte de la formación. ¿Por qué cambiaste la formación, querías algo diferente?

Después del álbum rEVOLUTION me di cuenta de que este proyecto no lograría nada sin los músicos adecuados. Especialmente los teclados y guitarras podían ser mejores. Tuve que hacer los reemplazos necesarios. Cuando causaron baja por motivos médicos Steven y Keely, de repente, tuve una alineación completamente nueva que podría usar para volver a empezar. Y de repente, las posibilidades de enfocar todo lo relativo a la música fueron mucho mayores. En el pasado cometí el error de permitir que este proyecto funcionase en la habitual fase de “aficionados-mediocres” durante demasiado tiempo. Eso rara vez te supone halagos y buenas críticas. Quizás fue también el hecho de que tampoco tuve tiempo suficiente para explorar y reflexionar sobre proyecto debido a mi actividad profesional como enfermero. Pero ahora resulta mucho más divertido salir y tocar, también creo que todo suena mejor y la gente dentro del grupo piensa mucho más en los aspectos musicales que antes. Así que, definitivamente, no quería nada nuevo, sólo una mejora de lo musical.

Algunas personas consideran que la banda está más cerca del sonido de Battle Beast. Y, de alguna manera, yo creo que sí. ¿Estás de acuerdo?

Hay algo de cierto en esa afirmación. En cuanto a la música, veo cierta semejanza en las guitarras y los ritmos. Pero somos más sinfónicos. La gran diferencia está en las voces. He estado siguiendo a Battle Beast desde su primer disco porque su álbum debut fue lanzado aproximadamente al mismo tiempo que el nuestro. Soy un gran admirador de su música, pero eso no ha afectado mi propio estilo de composición. La gran diferencia entre ambas bandas es la voz. Noora es puro metal y power brutal, mientras que Hellen puede manejar muchos otros estilos. A ella le gusta ir del soul al metal. Su voz es más limpia. Pero es un honor ver a Hellen comprada con una de las mejores cantantes de metal.

Parece que Bélgica empieza a brindarnos buenas bandas de heavy metal. Ancient Rites, Aborted … pero me sorprendió mucho Black Mirrors, otra banda de rock-metal liderada por una mujer. Cuéntanos un poco cómo es la escena belga.

En los últimos 10 años he visto un crecimiento en calidad importante aquí en Bélgica. Mencionas algunas bandas muy buenas, pero hay muchas otras aquí que tienen ya un nivel internacional. Echa un vistazo a grupos como Spoiled Engine, Beyond the Labyrinth, Eterrnity, Drakkar y muchas otras. Demuestran que Bélgica tiene una calidad potencial. El problema es que esta gente tiene que trabajar el doble para obtener algún reconocimiento. Muchas bandas a menudo funcionan sin un management real, simplemente porque hay demasiadas personas malvadas operando por aquí que fingen ser bookers o managers. Recientemente nosotros hemos vivido esta situación.

¿Cuáles son vuestros inminentes planes? ¿Habéis tocado en festivales de verano y os estáis planteando una gira europea?

No hay planes la verdad. Sabíamos que, debido a todo tipo de retrasos, el álbum no se lanzaría hasta el verano. Era demasiado tarde ya para los festivales de verano. Pero durante las grabaciones tuvimos contacto con un booker que se aseguraría de que tendríamos una agenda completa cuando se lanzara el álbum. Más tarde resultó que este hijo de puta no había hecho absolutamente nada excepto vender algo de humo. El resultado final es que después de la presentación del disco tenemos la agenda vacía hasta octubre. Luego hay algunos conciertos gestionados y buscados por nosotros mismos. Como banda, puedes sacar un discazo y tener muy buenas críticas, pero no puedes llegar a ningún lado sin una promoción masiva y un booker de confianza.

Desde tu punto de vista cuál es la mejor canción jamás escrita y por qué.

Una canción perfecta es algo de lo que podríamos estar discutiendo durante mucho tiempo. ¿Qué es una canción perfecta? Eso es diferente para todo el mundo. Creo que cada artista, o banda famosa, tiene siempre una canción perfecta. De lo contrario, no se habrían dado a conocer, ¿verdad? Lo “perfecto” depende de la atmósfera, de la temática, de las letras y de la interpretación musical. Eso es diferente para cada uno. Podría nombrar varias canciones, pero seguiríamos hablando durante mucho tiempo (risas).

Hello Rex, first of all congratulations I think that your new album Seduction has seduced most of the people who listen to it. Are you happy about fans and press’ opinions?  

Hello Jordi, thank you for this interview.  Yes we’re very pleased with the comments on the new album.  We  knew we had recorded a good album but we were curious  about the press reviews.  So we were happy after those reviews.  A nice reward for a year hard work.

I want to underline two fantastic things that I love in Nightqueen. On the one hand we have got a fantastic songwriting. On the other hand, Hellen Hearts’ voice. Where did you find a singer like Hellen?

I guess she came from the stars haha. After the terrible accident of Keely Larreina, I had thoughts to quit the project.  As a band we decided to give it one more shot and started searching for a new singer.  but because there was also a change of line-up during that period, we had to raise the rate depending on the technical and musical capacity of the new line-up. We received many applications. It was like the selections of pop idols here. After months of listening to auditions I got in touch with Hellen through an acquaintance. I knew her from her appearances on proms but I never thought she would like to sing our songs. And there she suddenly stood before me. And I saw many more possibilities in songwriting simply because she could sing everything she wanted. Hellen comes from the world of soul and pop but her voice is so overwhelming that I asked her not to deny her characteristic and to keep the soul in her voice.

Songs like “Energy” really have the power to make you an important band in Europe… Which are your favourite songs in Seduction? 

In fact, I like every song on the album. But there are certain songs that I find just a bit more. Such as Wall of Sorrow, Fuel the Fire and Return to Wonderland.  Energy is  indeed a strong song.  The purpose was to write a  live song about inviting the audience  to a party.  We used all the elements to make the song as powerful as we could do.  I hope we succeeded in our intent.

Other song that I love is “Wall of Sorrow”. Fantastic voice and beautiful guitars in a hooky song. We can talk about symphonic metal in this album?

Well, this is a question we can discuss for many hours without finding a satisfactory answer.  For my opinion Symphonic metal is Heavy Metal.  The heavy and powerfull drums and guitars in combination with different elements of orchestral classical music.  These elements are in each of our songs.  But we also use modern sounds like the poppy tunes in Termination and In Flames,  the Hammond Organ in  Wall of Sorrow or rock piano’s in other songs.  So let the press decide about the style.  If you like the songs the style is unimportant.  Our music style is probably too broad to be pushed into one box haha

In the power ballad “Fuel the Fire”, beautiful musical arrangements in the song make me think about Meat Loaf. Did you want to sound closer to Meat Loaf?

That was not the intention, at least certainly not in the initial phase. Paddy convinced us to write a ballad. Searching for a nice subject for the song, we had to search for the Seducion theme this time. While laughing, we were wondering how Hellen’s moves would be on stage in horny lyrics. So I tried to write as horny and seductive as possible haha … The vocal melody in my head is what you now hear on the song. The American rock influences began to weigh on the musical arrangements. Only then did we notice that it went towards Jim Steinman’s style. I also asked Hellen to sing it as horny as possible to make the lyrics sound as convincing as possible. The end result was that the song was very good and added add to the album.

Taking a look at your biography I can see that the band has got 3 albums before but in some moment, there is a showdown and you decided to change most of your line-up. Why did you change your line-up, you wanted something different?

After the revolution album I realized that this project would not achieve anything without the right musicians. Especially keyboards and guitars could be better. Here I also made the necessary replacements. When successively Steven and Keely also failed for medical reasons, I suddenly had a completely new line-up that you could use to unpack. And suddenly the possibilities to finish the music better were a lot bigger. In the past I made the mistake of allowing this project to function in a mediocre amateur phase for too long. That rarely produced super comments. Perhaps because I also had no time to further explore the project because of my professional activities as a self-employed nurse. But now it is certainly much more fun to play, there is also a better finish and people now think much more musically than before. So I didn’t want anything new but just an improvement of the music.

Some people consider that the band is closer to sound as Battle Beast. In some ways I think so. Do you agree?

There is some truth to that statement. In terms of music I see some resemblance in the guitars and the rhythms. But we are more symphonic. The big difference is in the vocals. I have been following Battle Beast since their first album because their first album was released at about the same time as our debut album. I am a big fan of their music but that has not affected my own writing style. The big difference between both bands at the moment is the vocals. Noora is pure metal and brutal power while Hellen can handle many styles. She likes to go from soul to metal. Her voice is cleaner. But I see it as an honor to see Hellen compared to one of the best metal singers.

It seems that Belgium starts to bring us good heavy metal bands. Ancient Rites, Aborted… but I was really surprised by Black Mirrors, another rock-metal band fronted by a woman. Tell us how is the Belgian scene?

The last 10 years I have seen a growth in quality here in Belgium. You mention some very good bands, but there are so many bands here that have an international level. Check out bands like Spoiled Engine, Beyond the Labyrinth, Eterrnity, Drakkar and so many more. They proove that Belgium has real quality. The problem is that people have to work twice as hard here to get some name recognition. Many good Bands often work without real management, simply because there are too many malicious people walking around here who pretend to be bookers or managers. We have recently experienced this.

I want to talk about El Puerto Records. Every time I listen to his artists I feel that they are looking for great bands, most of them unknown. Why did you sign with El Puerto after working with Massacre? Are you happy to work with them?

Which are your upcoming plans for this summer? Are you playing in summer festivals and planning a European tour?  There are no real plans. We knew that due to all kinds of delays the album would not be released until the summer. So too late for the summer festivals. But during the recordings we already had contact with a booker who was going to ensure that we would still have a full agenda when the album was released. It turned out afterwards that this son of a bitch had done absolutely nothing except sell some hot air. The result is that after the album presentation we have an empty agenda until October. Then there are a few gigs that we have walked behind ourselves. As a band you can then release a super album and also get very good reviews for it. You can’t get anywhere without a massive promotion and reliable booker.

Tell me from your standpoint which is the best song ever written and why?  A perfect song is something you can discuss for a long time. What is a perfect song?

That is different for everyone. I think every famous artist or band has a perfect song somewhere. Otherwise they would not have become known, would they? Perfect depends on the atmosphere, theme, lyrics and the musical interpretation. That is different for everyone. I could name songs but then we are still talking for a long time 🙂
