The Unguided ha sacado nuevo disco, así que lo mejor que podemos hacer es contactar con Richard Sjunnesson, su vocalista, para que nos explique un poco como ha sido la elaboración del álbum. Pero también preguntamos sobre la marcha de Henric Liljesand y como están afrontando la dificil situación a nivel mundial.

Buenas, gracias por estar con nosotros y pasar un rato agradable, o al menos eso esperamos. Os vamos a taladrar un poco, pero solo un poco eh, hahaha.
Empezamos con vuestro aniversario, ya que celebráis 10 años de carrera como The Unguided. ¿Teníais alguna cosa pensada en especial? Vuestra zona de confort es Europa del Norte, de Alemania para arriba, vaya. ¿Pero una gira larga a nivel mundial, volver a Japón o “abrir” mercado en América?
Richard: Creo que todo el aniversario de una década vino de la nada. Para ser justos, no creo que pasemos demasiado pensando en ello, incluso diría que es una gran coincidencia. La mayor victoria para nosotros es poder lanzar un álbum tan cerca del décimo aniversario. La primera vez que mencioné mi salida de Sonic Syndicate y anuncié The Unguided fue a saber; 25 o 28 de octubre de 2010. Creo que no habrá demasiadas cosas en 2020 y durante el comienzo de 2021, por lo que lo más probable es que ahorremos pólvora para el otoño de 2021. Por supuesto, nos encantaría volver a Japón y hacer nuestros primeros shows en América. Pero para que Estados Unidos suceda, creo que tiene que ser una gira de apoyo o un festival, no tiene sentido que una banda de nuestro tamaño haga una gira como headliner allí, en absoluto. Nos gustan los alemanes y nos encanta tocar allí tanto como sea posible, ya que sentimos que es como un segundo hogar para nosotros, jaja.
¿Cómo ha sido la marcha de Henric? ¿Supongo que agradecidos por todo este tiempo que ha estado con vosotros y aportar su granito de arena en vuestro último álbum?
Ver que los miembros se van siempre es difícil, pero esto se hizo de la mejor manera y seguimos siendo grandes amigos y él ayudó con la producción tocando todo el bajo y también contribuyendo con la composición de canciones en «Lance of Longinus». Estamos muy agradecidos por los muchos años con Henric, pero fue difícil para él comprometerse los últimos dos años con todas sus otras implicaciones, así que esto fue lo mejor.
¿Contentos con Father Shadow (2020)? Debo decir que os ha quedado un discazo eh.
Estamos muy orgullosos y felices. Creemos que este es el mejor hasta ahora y es el que definimos todos los procesos de trabajo en el futuro. Creemos que esto establecerá el punto de referencia para los próximos productos creativos por nuestra parte. Los cuatro hemos crecido juntos, muy unidos y sabemos exactamente dónde tenemos la creatividad de los demás y todos contribuyen desde su propia área de experiencia para hacer que las canciones sean lo mejor posible.
Aunque tenéis una base bien clara, se palpa el querer evolucionar disco a disco. En este caso en Father Shadow, encontramos bastante cambios en como afrontáis el metalcore y con nuevos sonidos electrónicos e incluso temas con un aire a melodic rock.
No creo que debamos pensar demasiado en todo el enfoque del género para ser justos. Tocamos metal melódico que es un género musical lo suficientemente bueno para nosotros. Creo que en Father Shadow echamos un vistazo un poco más al power metal y al heavy metal, mientras que a lo largo de nuestra carrera podríamos haber tenido un enfoque un poco más centrado. Fue simplemente un desarrollo natural. Siempre nos esforzamos por evolucionar y un aspecto de eso es tratar de no limitarnos a los mismos estudios y productores, por lo que para cada álbum que lanzamos probamos un nuevo productor. Eso mantiene las cosas fuera de su zona de confort y siempre aprendes mucho trabajando con diferentes personas.
¿Por qué las versiones de canciones vuestras de Sonic Syndicate? ¿Necesitabas ver como se oían con el estilo exacto que querías? No digo que sean malas, simple curiosidad.
Comenzamos a tocar «Denied» en vivo en 2018. Y para la gira principal de 2018 agregamos «Jack of Diamonds». Nuestras versiones fueron muy apreciadas en vivo, así que pensamos que las grabaríamos en el álbum como bonus tracks como un regalo para los fans. Agregamos «Jailbreak» para que representara la canción de los 3 primeros álbumes de Sonic Syndicate, ya que tenemos fans de todas las épocas.
¿Cómo afrontáis este futuro incierto que atravesamos todos?
No sé si es demasiado para afrontar, realmente. El mundo debe recuperarse y esto es un juego de saber esperar. Debemos ser pacientes y tratar de escuchar lo que nuestros gobiernos ven como medidas apropiadas y seguirlas para abordar esto. Estoy seguro de que eventualmente prevaleceremos, solo que tomará un poco de tiempo.
¿En vuestro país en concreto, crees que se han hecho bien las cosas respecto el covid? ¿Se ve tanta disparidad de opiniones en cada país que sinceramente, no se entiende.
Viendo que no ha terminado, todavía no tengo una opinión sobre quién hizo bien y quién hizo mal. Estoy seguro de que habrá mucho tiempo para debatir eso una vez que todo esto termine. Los números están aumentando a escala mundial ahora y eso es preocupante, por lo que todos tenemos que hacer nuestro mejor esfuerzo y actuar de acuerdo con las regulaciones locales.
¿Cómo es vuestro día a día a nivel de persona normal? ¿Vivís exclusivamente de la música (que no del grupo) o tenéis trabajos a parte?
Realmente tengo un trabajo honesto y soy gerente de departamento en un taller eléctrico e instrumental con alrededor de 20 personas trabajando en mantenimiento en la industria pesada. Eso requiere mucha atención, pero cuando no estoy trabajando, paso mucho tiempo en el gimnasio y salgo con amigos. También me encanta coger mi bajo de vez en cuando e intentar practicar un poco. Todos en la banda tienen un trabajo. The Unguided es solo nuestro pasatiempo profesional.
Esperemos que esto acabe pronto y podamos volver a disfrutar de conciertos en directo y como tienen que ser, de pie. ¿Tenéis pensado alternativas a si esto se alarga mucho? Sinceramente los conciertos en streaming están bien para pasar el mono, pero ya está.
Me gustan todos los programas en streaming y estoy comprando entradas para mis bandas favoritas que están haciendo eso. Espero que se mantenga incluso después de que regresen los shows en vivo. Pero es verdad, siendo justos no creo que exista una alternativa real. Creo que es por eso que no se está extinguiendo como muchos otros medios. La música en vivo es una experiencia demasiado poderosa para intentar reconvertirla a otros medios.

Hi, thanks for being with us and you having a nice time, or so we hope. We are going to drill you a little, but only a little, hahaha.
We start with your anniversary, as you celebrate 10 years of career as The Unguided. Did you have anything special in mind? Your comfort zone is Northern Europe, from Germany to Finland. But a long world tour, return to Japan or «open» market in America?
Richard: I think the whole 1-decade anniversary came a bit from nowhere even if it’s very true. I don’t think we spend too much thinking about it to be fair even if it’s a great coincidence. The biggest win for us is to be able to release an album so close to the 10 years anniversary. The first time I mentioned my departure from Sonic Syndicate and announced The Unguided was namely; 28 October 25, 2010. I think don’t there will be too much going on 2020 and during the beginning of 2021 so we’ll most likely save the gun powder to fall 2021. Of course, we’d love to come back to Japan and make our first shows in America. But for America to happen I think it have to be a support tour or festival it don’t make sense for a band of our size to do a headline there at all. We like them Germans and love to play there as much as possible as it feels like the second home for us haha.
How was Henric’s departure? I suppose that you are grateful for all this time that he has been with you and contribute his bit in your last album?
Having members leave is always hard but this was done in the best of ways and we are still great friends and he helped with the production with playing all the bass and also contributing with some songwriting on “Lance of Longinus”. We are very grateful for the many years with Henric but it was hard for him to commit the last couple of years with all his other involvements, so this was for the best.
Happy with Father Shadow (2020)? I must say that you have a great album, hey
We are very proud and happy. We think this one is our best yet and it’s the one we nailed down all the working processes going forward. We think this will set the benchmark for coming creative outputs from us. The four of us have grown together very tight and we know exactly where we have each other creativity and everyone contribute from their own area of expertise to make the songs as good as they possibly can be.
Although you have a very clear core, you can feel the desire to evolve album by album. In this case in Father Shadow, we find a lot of changes in how you approach metalcore and with new electronic sounds and even songs with a little of melodic rock.
I don’t think we spend too much thought into the whole genre approach to be fair. We play melodic metal that’s a musical label good enough for us. I think on Father Shadow we peeked a bit more on power metal and heavy metal whilst during our history we might have had a bit more core-oriented approach. It was just a natural development. We always strive to evolve and one aspect of that is trying to not limit ourselves with the same studios and producers so for every album we released we’ve tried a new producer. That keeps things out of their comfort zone and you always learn a lot by working with different people.
Why your versions of songs from Sonic Syndicate? Did you need to see what they sound like with the exact style you wanted? I’m not saying they’re bad, just curious.
We started to play «Denied» live back in 2018. And for the headline tour 2018 we added «Jack of Diamonds». Our versions were very appreciated live so we figured we’ll just record them on the album as bonus tracks as a bit of a treat for the fans. We added «Jailbreak» so it would represent the single track of the 3 first Sonic Syndicate albums since we have fans from all eras.
How do you face this uncertain future that we are all going through?
I don’t know if it’s too much to face really. The world must heal, and this is a waiting game. We must be patient and try to listen to what our governments see as appropriate measures and follow them to tackle this. I’m sure we will prevail eventually it will just take a bit of time.
In your country in particular, do you think things have been done well with regard to the covid? Do you see so much disparity of opinions in each country that honestly, it is not understood
Seeing it’s not over I don’t have an opinion about who did right and who did wrong just yet. I’m sure there will plenty of time to debate that once all this is over. The numbers are going up on a global scale now and that is worrisome, so we all have to do our best and act according to the local regulations.
How is your day to day at the level of a normal person? Do you live exclusively on music (not the group) or do you have separate jobs?
I have a honest job indeed and I’m a department manager on a electrical and instrumental workshop with around 20 people working on maintenance on heavy industry. So that requires a lot of my attention surely but when I’m not working, I spend a lot of time at the gym and hanging out with friends. I also love to pick up my bass guitar every now and then and try to practice that a bit. Everyone in the band have a job on the side of the band. The Unguided is just our professional hobby.
Hopefully this ends soon and we can again enjoy live concerts and how they have to be, standing up. Do you have any alternatives in mind if this takes too long? Honestly, streaming concerts are good to get a quick fix, but that’s it.
I like the whole streaming shows and is buying some tickets to my favorite bands that are doing that. I hope that stays even after live shows comes back. But for the real deal I don’t think there’s a real alternative to be fair. I think that’s why it’s not dying out like a lot of other media. Live music is just a too powerful experience to try to convert it to other medias.

Soy de esa generación que la “post-pubertad” lo pilló entre el metal primigenio (lo que llamamos ahora old school) y la nueva ola que fue el Nu metal, es decir, pasado mediados de los 90. Me encantan muchos estilos pero sobretodo el rock clásico y evidentemente el metal, este último es una forma de vida y encima me gusta desgranar y reconocer la riqueza de todos sus subgéneros. Uno ya tiene su edad (los mechones blancos en la barba no están por que sí) pero no me cierro para nada a grupos nuevos, eso sí, mientras haya fuerza y calidad, aunque hoy en día hay mucha. Como nacido justo entrados los ochenta también se incluye que soy un friki de cuidado (rol, videojuegos, Star Wars, pelis Gore, literatura fantástica y un largo etc.) vaya que toco de todo un poco. En resumen, espero contagiaros mi pasión metalhead a la vez que disfrutáis de mis aberrantes destripes.
