Con un nombre como Aborted, no hace falta ser un genio para incluir a la banda que aquí nos ocupa dentro del reino del death/grindcore, pero desde que se formó en 1995, estos belgas han superado cualquier tipo de limitaciones estilísticas. Charlamos con su vocalista Sven De Caluwé para que nos explique de qué va TerrorVision (2018) y para que nos diga qué podemos esperar de su próxima visita por nuestra geografía.

¡Hola, Sven! Bienvenido a Science of Noise. Es un placer saber un poco más sobre Aborted, una banda que he estado siguiendo durante muchos años y que realmente admiro. ¿Cómo va todo?
¡Muy genial! ¡El placer es mío!
Lleváis en activo desde el año 1995 y más o menos cada dos años habéis ido sacando material sin parar con una carrera con gran proyección. ¿Cómo se consigue esto?
Requiere mucho compromiso, porque la música, y el death metal en especial, no siempre son fáciles de conseguir, pero lo logramos y seguimos así. También tomamos mucha cerveza de jengibre y nos gastamos el dinero del almuerzo de Mendel.
Vuestro nuevo disco me ha impresionado mucho, una clara evolución de vuestros anteriores discos. ¿Os ha costado mucho darle forma a TerrorVision (2018)?
Ha sido constante, implacablemente detallado y desafiante, pero todos trabajamos muy duro y pasamos por las canciones varias veces hasta que estuvimos 100% satisfechos con ello. Incluso hay una canción en la que hemos estado trabajando durante tres años.
Ya que abordamos vuestro disco más reciente, ¿cómo ha sido la experiencia de trabajar de nuevo con grandes músicos como son la gente de Septicflesh y Benighted? ¿Tenéis pensado desde un principio con quien queréis colaborar?
Todo salió bastante claro una vez que las canciones comenzaron a tomar forma y a llegar a su versión final. Julien y Seth son unas personas geniales, además de unos bestiales con los que tocar y trabajar.
SofN: Una cosa que me sorprende mucho es que la formación siempre ha ido cambiando durante los años manteniéndote solo tú a las voces, pero no habéis perdido vuestra identidad ni vuestro sonido. ¿Cómo se puede gestionar tan bien esta situación?
Nos tomó un poco afinar la formación, pero finalmente tenemos las personas adecuadas para hacerlo. Es como cuando vas de compras a pillarte un bolso y tardas una eternidad en decidirte por uno o cuando quieres pizza en un restaurante y no sabes cuál pedir. Pero ahora tenemos a un italiano con nosotros, por lo que ese escenario es más fácil.
Encabezáis una de las giras europeas más extremas que nos podamos encontrar en la actualidad junto a Cryptopsy, Benighted y Cytotoxin. ¿Qué esperáis de esta gira?
Unos cuantos blast beats.
Tras vuestro disco Strychnine.213 (2008) hubo una desbandada general y, personalmente, creo que es uno de vuestros discos más flojos. ¿Fue un punto de inflexión para la continuación del grupo?
¿Cuál es la siguiente pregunta? En serio, después de ese álbum tenía que haber algún tipo de regreso al death metal más directo, y luego salió Global Flatline (2012).
No conozco mucho la escena death metal de Bélgica a excepción de vosotros y Emeth. ¿Nos podrías recomendar grupos de vuestra tierra que os hayan impactado?
Yo diría que Carnation. ¡Deberías echarles ojo!
Creo que la gira que estáis haciendo es espectacular, pero si pudieses imaginarte la gira de tus sueños, ¿con qué otros tres grupos te gustaría salir a la carretera?
¡Pregunta difícil! En serio, hay bastantes bandas con las que nos gustaría hacer una gira, pero mantengámoslo para nosotros mismos y luego te cuento si sucede o no.
No sé si últimamente la gente le da demasiada importancia a las letras. ¿Nos podrías resumir un poco sobre qué temas tratan las letras de TerrorVision?
Se trata principalmente del impacto hipnotizador de los medios de comunicación y de cómo influyen en nuestra vida y evitan que la mayoría de las personas piensen y razonen por ellas mismas.
Os tengo que felicitar por la portada, que he visto que es obra de Pär Olofsson, con el que habéis trabajado en varias ocasiones. ¿Cómo es trabajar con este artista?
Siempre es genial trabajar con Par. Estábamos muy contentos con nuestro último trabajo, así que decidimos trabajar con él nuevamente, y definitivamente tenía las ideas correctas para TerrorVision.

Hi there! Welcome to Science of Noise. It’s a pleasure to know a little more about Aborted, a band that I’ve been following for many years and I really admire. How’s everything?
Pretty cool! Pleasure is mine!
You have been in active since 1995 and you’ve been releasing new material every two years without stopping the projection of you guys as a band. How is this achieved?
Takes a lot of commitment, because music and death metal especially is not always an easy ride, but we made it and we’re keeping this up. Also takes a lot of ginger beer and Mendel’s lunch money.
Your new album has impressed me a lot. It is a clear evolution of your previous albums. How was the process of shaping TerrorVision (2018)?
It’s been constant, relentlessly detailed and challenging but we all worked very hard and went through songs multiple times until we were 100% statysfied with it. There’s even a song we had been working on for three years.
Since we’re approaching your most recent album, how has it been the experience of working again with great musicians, such as people from Septicflesh and Benighted? It was clear for you from the very beginning with whom you wanted to collaborate?
It all came up pretty clear once the songs started to shape up and get to the final version. Julien and Seth are cool people other than killer musicians to play and work with.
One thing that surprises me a lot is that the lineup has always been changing over the years, only keeping frpm the beginning Sven on vocals, but you have not lost your identity nor your sound. How can you manage this situation so well?
It took a bit to fine-tune the line up but finally we have the right people to do it. It’s like when you go purse-shopping and it takes you forever to decide your fav bag or when your order pizza at a restaurant and you don’t know what to take. But we now have an Italian with us, so that scenario is easier.
You head one of the most extreme European tours that we can find today with Cryptopsy, Benighted and Cytotoxin. What do you expect from this tour?
Blast beats. A few of them.
After Strychnine.213 (2008), there was a general disbanding and I personally think it’s one of your weakest record. Was it a turning point for the continuation of the band?
What’s the next question again? Seriously, after that album there needed to be some sort of return to straight up death metal, and then Global Flatline (2012) came out.
I do not know much about the death metal scene in Belgium except for you and Emeth. Could you recommend us other bands from your country that have impacted you somehow?
I’d say Carnation, you should check them out!
I think your actual tour is spectacular, but if you could imagine “the tour of your dreams”, what other three bands would you like to hit the road with?
Tough question! Seriously, there’s quite a few bands we’d like to tour with but let’s keep it for ourselves and then I’ll tell you later if that happens or not.
I do not know if lately people give too much importance to the lyrics. Could you summarize a bit about the lyrics in TerrorVision?
It’s mainly about the dangerously mesmerizing impact of the media and how they influence our life and keep most of the people from thinking and reasoning with their own mind.
I have to congratulate you, by the way, for the cover of the album. I’ve seen Pär Olofsson is the author, and it’s not the first time you work together. How is it working with this artist?
It’s always really cool to work with Par, we were very happy with our last work so we decided to work with him again, and he definitely had the right ideas for TerrorVision.
