Entrevista a Temperance: ‘Tocar con Tarja es otra gran oportunidad que se nos brinda y una vez más haremos nuestro mejor esfuerzo en el camino’

Antes de comenzar con la entrevista, me gustaría agradecerle por tomarse unos minutos para responder nuestras preguntas.

De nada, es un placer y estamos extremadamente agradecidos por esta oportunidad de dar más información sobre nuestra banda y nuestro nuevo álbum.

Sois una banda veterana, cinco discos os avalan, contando el disco en directo, y con un nuevo trabajo a punto de publicar. Habéis tenido la oportunidad de telonear a otras formaciones y habéis girado en solitario. En esta ocasión seréis los encargados de abrir los conciertos para Tarja, ¿qué expectativas teníais? ¿Se están cumpliendo?

Somos una banda muy trabajadora, siempre dispuesta a mejorar y hacer un mejor álbum tras álbum y año tras año. Hemos puesto todos nuestros esfuerzos para alcanzar lo que tenemos y también tenemos muchas ideas y cosas que contar, es por eso que hemos sido tan productivos a lo largo de los años. El recorrido que tendremos con Tarja es otra gran oportunidad que se nos brinda y una vez más haremos nuestro mejor esfuerzo en el camino. ¡Esperamos que sea una oportunidad para que nuestra música llegue a un público más amplio y, por supuesto, estamos seguros de que nos divertiremos mucho y aprenderemos mucho para un acto tan profesional!

¿Qué tipo de respuesta habéis obtenido por parte de su público?

Ya sabes, somos principalmente una banda en vivo: creemos que la esencia de Temperance se desata cuando actuamos en el escenario. Lo que hacemos durante nuestro show es divertirnos, ser profesionales y, por lo que podemos ver, la gente ama esto. Todos nos dicen que aman la forma en que sonreímos en el escenario, la forma en que dejamos claro cuánto disfrutamos y nos divertimos en el escenario: ¡y esto parece ser contagioso! Después de un espectáculo de Temperance, prometemos que saldrás del lugar con una gran sonrisa en tu rostro.

Anteriormente habéis compartido escenario y abierto para otras bandas de estilos distintos. Supongo que habréis vivido situaciones de todo tipo, ¿Qué anécdotas podéis contarnos?

Seguramente no tenemos límites. Temperance ha estado tocando antes que bandas como Nightwish y Within Temptation tanto como Slipknot y otros actos extremos. Gracias a la diversidad de nuestro estilo, podemos adaptar fácilmente el setlist a diferentes audiencias, manteniendo nuestros singles como aspectos más destacados, por supuesto. Algo curioso que una vez sucedió y que es bueno decir fue una «extensión de lista de canciones» que tuvimos que resolver rápidamente mientras abríamos para Nightwish en Italia. Sucedió que debido a un malentendido entre los técnicos y la gerencia, nos hicieron comenzar a tocar 30 minutos antes de nuestra hora programada … y después de 30 minutos de set, todos acordaron que extendiéramos el set por un par de canciones más para evitar un largo brecha entre nosotros y Nightwish … fue realmente genial para nosotros jugar tanto tiempo ese día y simplemente seguimos las órdenes que nos dieron, ¡así que no tenemos nada de lo que arrepentirnos profesionalmente!

Nuevo disco en enero de 2020 en el que el carpe diem, la muerte, batallas personales y ecología se reflejan en las canciones. ¿El peso de las letras recae en una sola persona o cada miembro aporta su grano de arena?

El principal compositor de Temperance es Marco, mientras que las letras sabias Michele y Alessia son los escritores principales, aunque Viridian es el primer álbum con la nueva línea donde las cosas se movieron un poco. Michele escribió dos canciones y Marco escribió la letra de una canción, Alfonso escribió la letra de otra… este es definitivamente el álbum donde el trabajo en equipo se ha destacado principalmente.

¿Sois de componer durante las giras o preferís dedicar la composición a momentos más calmados?

Realmente no puedes controlar el momento en que las ideas vienen a tu mente, o al menos esto es lo que pensamos. Puede suceder que salgamos con un riff o una melodía tanto en la carretera como en casa; puede suceder justo después de que te hayas despertado o cuando te vayas a la cama. Compusimos algunas de las canciones durante las giras y otras en el estudio mientras organizamos las otras pistas … no hay reglas y nos encanta.

Recientemente habéis publicado una canción navideña. ¿Cómo surgió la idea? ¿Era algo que ya meditaba hace mucho tiempo?

Hace ya un par de años que queríamos escribir una canción de Navidad, pero nunca fue el «momento adecuado» para hacerlo. Tuvimos mucho más tiempo para trabajar en Viridian que para cualquier otro álbum de Temperance, por lo que por primera vez también podríamos centrarnos en esta canción. También sucedió que comenzamos a organizar las nuevas pistas durante el invierno de 2018, por lo que el ambiente navideño era realmente alto y realmente parecía que era el momento perfecto para hacer realidad esta idea nuestra. ¡Así nació «Lost in the Christmas Dream»!

En 2018 hubo un importante cambio de miembros en la formación original. ¿Qué ha supuesto este cambio en la dinámica de la banda y cuál ha sido la aceptación por parte de los fans ahora que ya ha pasado un tiempo más que suficiente?

El cambio de alineación era algo necesario: en el pasado estaba claro que teníamos que cambiar algo para dar el paso adelante y los comentarios de todas las partes demostraron que teníamos razón. Después del cambio de formación y con Júpiter tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer cosas que nunca podríamos haber hecho antes por diferentes razones y esta nueva formación con tres vocalistas es algo peculiar y único que hace que Temperance tenga una personalidad propia. Ahora tenemos una gama realmente más amplia de opciones con respecto a los arreglos de nuestras partes vocales y nuestras canciones en general, y podemos construir cada canción sin límites. Incluso el espectáculo es más dinámico ahora, ya que puede suceder que durante algunas canciones cambiemos las partes en comparación con lo que grabamos …

Tres voces diferentes repartidas en los dos cantantes principales y Marco encargado de guitarra y voz. ¿Cómo repartís el protagonismo en las partes vocales teniendo en cuenta el protagonismo de Alessia?

Siempre pensamos en lo que es mejor para la canción, realmente no tenemos un orden y todos nos sentimos en el mismo nivel de este lado. Dependiendo de lo que necesite la canción, elegimos quién cantará una parte específica. Cuando se necesita una voz alta y limpia, será Alessia, cuando se necesita una voz áspera será Marco, cuando se necesite una voz poderosa y teatral será Michele. Al mismo tiempo, tenemos la suerte de ser muy versátiles en términos de colores vocales, por lo que a veces Michele o Marco pueden hacer la parte alta si es necesario algo más de energía de lo que Alessia podría proporcionar a la canción, o al Al mismo tiempo, si necesitamos un enfoque más delicado y gentil en la parte inferior, se lo daremos a Alessia. Básicamente, la razón por la que queríamos tres voces en la banda después del cambio de formación era exactamente esta: ahora tenemos la oportunidad de servir cada canción, hablando en voz alta.

¿Qué novedades podemos encontrar en vuestro nuevo disco respecto a los anteriores?

La mayor diferencia la proporciona la diversidad de estilos que usamos para las canciones de este álbum. «Of Jupiter and Moons» es un álbum con algunas canciones de power-metal, algunas canciones de metal sinfónico, algunas canciones de hard rock, pero puede archivarse fácilmente bajo el «Symphonic Metal». Con «Viridian» todo se vuelve más difícil de archivar bajo una etiqueta específica. Por supuesto, tenemos algunas canciones de power metal y metal sinfónico, pero como se puede escuchar en los singles, «Mission Impossible» es una canción de metal moderna, «My Demons Can’t Sleep» está más en el lado melódico / power … pero hay muchas sorpresas: encontrarás una canción de hard rock puro, una balada pop, un gospel, alguna canción realmente pesada. Cada pista tiene su propia vida, y al mismo tiempo todo está unido por nuestro «estilo».

¿Hay prevista gira de presentación como banda principal?

Sería genial y nos encantaría, pero conocemos perfectamente nuestra posición y sabemos que todavía somos un pez pequeño en el mar. Saltar en una gira de cabeza en este momento significaría pretender ser mucho más grande de lo que somos como banda. Creceremos y tendremos nuestro tiempo, creemos en nuestra música, pero todo necesita tiempo para desarrollarse. Seguramente tocaremos algunos shows principales aquí y allá, tenemos los cuatro shows de lanzamiento en enero y vendrán más, pero es demasiado pronto para hablar sobre una gira principal.

Cambiando un poco de tema, ¿en qué estado se encuentra el metal en Italia? ¿Existe una escena fuerte?

Especialmente en los últimos años, ha visto surgir una gran cantidad de bandas de metal italianas: podemos decir fácilmente que este es uno de los momentos más florecientes de la historia. Pienso en nuevas bandas que están creciendo mucho como Wind Rose o Frozen Crown, o en bandas de la generación pasada que se están volviendo enormes como Lacuna Coil o Lione / Turilli’s Rhapsody. Al mismo tiempo, tenemos muchos músicos italianos que se están involucrando en proyectos interesantes: Alle con Twilight Force, Francesco con Freedom Call, Gee con Dragonforce y muchos, muchos otros que crearían una lista demasiado larga para escribir aquí … ¡Estamos absolutamente orgullosos de la escena del metal italiano!

¿Cómo veis la representación de la mujer en la escena metálica italiana? ¿Surgen más formaciones íntegramente femeninas aparte de ser únicamente la cantante principal en una formación mayoritariamente masculina?

Después de los años 90, bandas de metal con voces femeninas han venido de todas partes, no solo de Italia. Seguramente tenemos mucho (Lacuna Coil, Frozen Crown, Sleeping Romance, Kalidia, Secret Rule y muchos, muchos otros), pero podríamos comenzar a escribir otra lista aquí que podría ser interminable y mencionaría bandas de todas partes del mundo. Al mismo tiempo, hay toneladas de bandas dirigidas solo por hombres… lo bueno es que las voces femeninas ya no se consideran «raras». En aquellos días, la «ideología del verdadero metal puro» estaba un poco en contra de las voces femeninas y es gracias a bandas como Nightwish y algunos otros pioneros que las voces femeninas comenzaron a ser aceptadas en la escena. En Italia, la situación no es diferente a la de cualquier otro país, realmente no hay nada peculiar o específico que decir sobre ese tipo de alineaciones.

Entiendo, conociendo un poco vuestra música, que estáis abiertos a cualquier influencia que pueda aportar algo nuevo a la banda. ¿Qué grupos o estilos escucháis habitualmente?

Y aquí estamos con otra lista interminable. Cada uno de nosotros tiene gustos diferentes en términos de música, y al mismo tiempo somos muy, muy abiertos de mente. Luca ama el jazz, Michele ama el power y el metal sinfónico, Alessia ama la música electrónica y AOR, Marco ama el metal sinfónico tanto como la música pop, a Alfonso le gustan más las cosas extremas, pero al mismo tiempo a todos nos encanta profundizar en otros estilos, para que puedas encontrar a Luca escuchando djent, Michele escuchando death metal, Alessia escuchando rock alternativo, Marco escuchando prog metal y Alfonso escuchando hard rock. Si tenemos que elegir algunas bandas que admiramos por diferentes razones en este momento específico, diríamos Ghost, Avantasia, Jinjer, Powerwolf y Leprous.

Para finalizar, vamos a seguir con un clásico en nuestras entrevistas. Si tuvierais la oportunidad de organizar vuestro propio festival, ¿Qué cinco grupos elegiríais para que os acompañasen?

Fantasma, Avantasia, Jinjer, Powerwolf y Leprous. ¿Divertida respuesta no es así? Ghost tiene un espectáculo increíble junto con canciones increíbles. Avantasia es una fuente de inspiración para nuestra música desde hace años, todos admiramos lo que Tobias Sammet podría construir con su propia fuerza. Jinjer está creciendo segundo tras segundo y realmente crearon algo nuevo. Powerwolf encontró una manera de llevar el power metal a un renacimiento, cada power metalhead les debe algo. Leprous están encontrando una manera de mezclar tantos estilos diferentes en un sonido único.

Before we start with the interview, I’d like to thank you for taking a few minutes to answer our questions.

You’re welcome: it’s our pleasure and we are extremely thankful for this opportunity of giving some more infos about our band and our new album!

Temperance is a veteran band, five albums endorse you, including a live work. And now you have a new álbum ready to published. You have had the opportunity to open for other bands and you’ve also toured solo. Now you will be the opening band for Tarja. What expectations do you have? Are being fulfilled?

We are a hard working band, always willing to improve and to do better album after album and year after year. We’ve been putting all our efforts to reach what we have and we also have plenty of ideas and things to tell, this is why we have been so productive through the years. The tour we’ll have with Tarja is another great opportunity that is given to us and we’ll once again try our best on the road. We hope that it will be a chance to make our music reach a wider audience and, of course, we are sure we’ll have great fun and we’ll learn a lot for such a professional act!

What kind of response did you have from your audience?

You know, we are mainly a live band: we believe that the essence of Temperance is unleashed when we are performing on stage. What we do during our show is having fun, being professional, and for what we can see people love this. Everyone is telling us that they love the way we smile on stage, the way we make it clear how much we enjoy and have fun being on stage: and this seems to be contagious! After a Temperance show we promise you’ll get out of the venue with a big smile on your face.

You have previously shared the stage and opened for other bands of very different styles. I guess you may have experienced many kinds of situations. What anecdotes can you tell us?

We surely have no boundaries. Temperance have been playing before bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation as much as Slipknot and other extreme acts. Thanks to the diversity of our style we can easily adapt the setlist to different audiences, maintaining our singles as highlights of course! A funny thing that once happen and is nice to tell was a “setlist extension” we had to work out quickly while opening for Nightwish in Italy. It happened that due to a misunderstanding between the technicians and the management they made us start playing 30 minutes before our scheduled time…and after 30 minutes of set, everyone agreed on having us extending the set for a couple of songs more to avoid a long gap between us and Nightwish…it was really cool for us to play such a long time that day and we just followed the orders given us so we have nothing to regret professionally!

The new album will arrive in January 2020 in which carpe diem, death, personal battles and ecology are reflected in the songs. Does the weight of the letters fall on a single person or each member if the band have contributed?

The main composer in Temperance is Marco, while lyrics-wise Michele and Alessia are the main writers, Viridian though is the first album with the new line-up where things moved a bit: Michele wrote two songs two and regarding the lyrics: Marco wrote the lyrics for one song, Alfonso wrote the lyrics for another one…this definitely is the album where team-work has been highlighted mostly.

Are you composing during the tours or do you prefer to do it in quieter moments?

You really can’t control the moment when ideas come to your mind, or at least this is what we thing. It may happen that we come out with a riff or a melody while on the road as much as while you’re at home; it may happen right after you’ve woken up or when you’re off to bed. We composed some of the songs during the tours and some others in the studio while arranging the other tracks…there are no rules and we love this.

You have recently published a Christmas-themed song. How did the idea come about? Was it something already meditated a long ago?

It was a couple of years already that we wanted to write a Christmas song but it was never the “right moment” to do it. We had way more time to work on Viridian than for every other Temperance’s album, so for the first time we could really focus on this song too. It also happened that we started arranging the new tracks during winter in 2018, so the Christmas vibe was really high and it really felt like it was the perfect time to release this idea of ours. That’s how “Lost in the Christmas Dream” was born!

In 2018 there was a significant change in the lineup. What did this change mean in the dynamics of the band and how has been the acceptance by the fans over time?

The line-up change was something needed: back in the days it was clear that we had to change something to do the step forward and the feedback from every side proved us we were right. After the line-up change and with Jupiter we had the chance to do things that we could have never done before for different reasons and this new line-up with three vocalists is something peculiar and unique that make Temperance have an own personality. Now we have a really wider range of options regarding the arrangements of our vocal parts and our songs in general, and we can build up every song with no limits. Even the show is more dynamic now as it may happen that during some songs we switch parts compared to what we recorded…

Three different voices distributed in the two main singers and Marco in charge of guitar and voice. How do you distribute the prominence in the vocal parts taking into account the prominence of Alessia?

We always think of what’s best for the song, we don’t really have an order and we all feel on the same level on this side. Depending on what’s the song need, we choose who’s going to sing a specific part. When a high and clean voice is needed, it will be Alessia, when a rough voice is needed it will be Marco, when a powerful and theatrical voice is needed it will be Michele. At the same time we have the luck of being very versatile in terms of vocal-colours, so sometimes the high part can be done by Michele or Marco if there’s a need for some more energy than what Alessia could provide to the song, or at the same time if we need a more delicate and gentle approach on a lower part it will be given to Alessia. Basically, the reason why we wanted three vocals in the band after the line-up change was exactly this one: now we have the chance to serve every song, vocally speaking.

What kind of news can we find in your new album compared to the previous ones?

The biggest different is provided by the diversity of styles we used for the songs of this album. “Of Jupiter and Moons” is an album with some power-metal songs, some symphonic metal songs, some hard rock songs but it can easily filed under the symphonic metal. With Viridian everything becomes harder to file under a specific label. Of course we have some power metal and symphonic metal songs, but as you could hear from the singles, «Mission Impossible» is a modern metal track, «My Demons Can’t Sleep» is more on the melodic/power side…but it’s plenty of surprises: you’ll find a pure hard rock song, a pop-ballad, a gospel, some really heavy song. Every single track has its own life, and at the same tame everything is glued together by our “style”.

Is there a headliner tour planned?

It would be great and we would love to, but we perfectly know our position and we know that we’re still a small fish in the sea. Jumping in a headlining tour right now would mean pretending to be way bigger than what we are as a band. We’ll grow and we’ll have our time, we believe in our music but everything needs time to be developed. We’ll surely play some headlining shows here and there, we have the four release-shows in January and more will come, but it’s way too early to talk about a headlining tour.

Changing the subject a bit, how’s the metal scene nowadays in Italy?

Especially the last years have seen a lot of Italian metal band rising: we can easily say that this is one of the most flourishing times ever. I think of new bands that are growing a lot like Wind Rose or Frozen Crown, or of bands from the past generation that are becoming huge like Lacuna Coil or Lione/Turilli’s Rhapsody. At the same time we have a lot of Italian musicians that are getting involved in interesting project: Alle with Twilight Force, Francesco with Freedom Call, Gee with Dragonforce and many, many others that would create a way too long list to be written here…we are absolutely proud of the Italian metal scene!

How do you see the representation of women in the Italian metal scene? Do more all female bands emerge apart from being solely the lead singer in a mostly male formation?

After the 90’s metal bands with female voices have been coming from everywhere, not only from Italy. We surely have a lot (Lacuna Coil, Frozen Crown, Sleeping Romance, Kalidia, Secret Rule and many, many others) but we could start writing another list here that could be endless and would mention bands from everywhere in the world. At the same time there are tons of bands that are led by men only…the good thing is that female voices are not considered “weird” anymore. Back in the days the “true-pure-metal-ideology” was kinda against female vocals and it’s thanks to bands like Nightwish and some other pioneers that female vocals started to be accepted in the scene. In Italy the situation is not different from any other country, there’s really nothing peculiar or specific to say about those kind of line-ups.

I understand, knowing your music a little, that you are open to any inffluence that can bring somethig new to the band. What bands or styles do you usually listen to?

And here we are with another endless list. Everyone of us has different tastes in terms of music, and at the same time we are really, really open minded. Luca loves jazz, Michele loves power and symphonic metal, Alessia loves AOR and electronic music, Marco loves symphonic metal as much as pop music, Alfonso is more into extreme stuff, but at the same time everyone of us loves to dig into other styles, so you could find Luca listening to djent, Michele listening to death metal, Alessia listening to alternative rock, Marco listening to prog metal and Alfonso listening to hard rock. If we have to pick a few bands we admire from different reasons in this specific moment, we would say Ghost, Avantasia, Jinjer, Powerwolf and Leprous.

And finally, we will continue with a classic in our interviews. If you had the chance to organize your own festival, what five bands would you choose to join you?

Ghost, Avantasia, Jinjer, Powerwolf and Leprous. Funny answer isn’t it? Ghost have just an amazing show together with amazing songs. Avantasia are a source of inspiration for our music since years, we all admire what Tobias Sammet could build up with his own strength. Jinjer are growing second after second and they really created something new. Powerwolf found a way to bring power-metal to a rebirth, every power-metalhead owes them something. Leprous are finding a way to blend so many different styles in a unique sound.
