Entrevista a The Baboon Show: ‘A veces alguien me toca el culo cuando me tiro al público, y eso no es agradable… Siempre le digo algo a la audiencia, así me aseguro de que quien lo hizo sepa cómo me siento’

Hola, tengo que deciros que, posiblemente, Radio Rebelde es el mejor álbum del año pasado. La primera escucha fue absolutamente impactante. Después de 20 años haciendo crítica de discos, creo que este tipo de álbumes solo aparecen cada mucho tiempo. ¿Es Radio Rebelde vuestro mejor álbum hasta la fecha?

Frida: ¡Muchas gracias! Estamos muy orgullosos de Radio Rebelde. Creo que nuestro sonido ha cambiado bastante desde el primer disco hasta ahora. Hemos mutado de un sonido más punk hacia un sonido rock más pesado, con más melodía. Sin embargo, todavía mantenemos la actitud punk. Parece que a nuestros fans les gusta mucho el nuevo disco y, por supuesto, ¡nuestro nuevo disco es también nuestro favorito!

Parece que el año pasado The Baboon Show finalmente conquistó España. Sin embargo, siempre habéis tenido muchos aficionados en el norte: Euskadi y Catalunya. ¿Podemos decir que en la actualidad The Baboon Show tiene en España uno de sus más grandes mercados?

Frida: Nos encanta venir a tocar a vuestro país. Realmente la gente nos recibió con los brazos abiertos. ¡De verdad que sabéis cómo rockear! (risas). Hemos estado de gira por Alemania durante muchos años y sus países aledaños, por lo que hemos acumulado una gran cantidad de seguidores allí. Pero en España todo ha pasado mucho más rápido. Supongo que me entiendes, ¿no? (risas).

Este junio-julio vais a estar tocando en Madrid, Barcelona, Gijón, La Rioja y Vilagarcía de Arousa… ¡No está mal! Estuvisteis ya en Barcelona en el Barna ‘n’ Roll 2017 y esta será vuestra segunda vez… ¡y junto a The Offspring! Cuéntanos algo sobre vuestra primera experiencia en el Barna ‘n’ Roll, en mi opinión, el lugar donde se celebra es realmente especial.

Frida: ¡Es un lugar muy bonito y nos lo pasamos genial tocando allí! ¡Pero recuerdo que hacía muchísimo calor! No es un clima para los vikingos que vienen del norte. Al final de la noche Cecilia y yo estábamos sentadas en las escaleras detrás del escenario totalmente agotadas, pero felices, por supuesto.

Creo que The Baboon Show tenía antes un espíritu más punk, pero actualmente sonáis más a rock and roll. ¿Canciones hímnicas y más medios tiempos es lo que podemos esperar en vuestros próximos discos?

Frida: Estoy totalmente de acuerdo con que ahora sonamos más rock n’ roll. Y no, no voy a contarte cómo va a sonar el próximo álbum de The Baboon Show, pero… ¡buen intento amigo!

Dime, ¿por qué escogiste The Baboon Show como nombre del grupo? ¿Por qué babuinos?

Cecilia: Queríamos un nombre que no fuera «cool«, un nombre que hiciera reaccionar a la gente y a la vez que fuera fácil de recordar. Así que The Baboon Show fue el elegido (risas). Cuando estábamos hablando de nombres para la banda vimos en televisión a un mono haciéndolo de corredor de bolsa en el mercado de valores. Y luego en el parlamento sueco algunos de sus miembros se comportaban como monos. Así que pensamos: si un mono puede estar en el parlamento y manejando acciones, podemos ofrecer nuestro particular espectáculo de babuinos. Yeah!

No he tenido todavía la oportunidad de veros sobre un escenario, pero todas las personas que os han visto en vivo me han dicho que vuestro show es impresionante y que Cecilia parece «el mejor Iggy Pop» sobre el escenario. ¿Te gusta ser considerada «La versión femenina de Iggy Pop»?

Cecilia: ¡Oh! ¡Gracias! Me lo tomo totalmente como un cumplido a pesar de que me considero algo más «personal» y único que ser la versión femenina de Iggy Pop. Pero entiendo la comparación y que la gente necesite algo o alguien a quien referirse o compararse. También me han llamado «Bon Scott en chica» y «la Nina Hagen sueca». ¡Gracias!

He leído Cecilia que tienes hijos (yo también) y supongo que hacer una gira y ser madre es algo difícil de combinar. ¿Tienes algunos momentos de debilidad y echas de menos tu hogar, o cada vez que te subes al escenario sientes nueva energía y te olvidas de todo?

Cecilia: Eso es correcto. Tengo un hijo de seis años y un bebé de dos meses. Así que, por supuesto, cuando estoy lejos de casa, echo de menos mucho a mi familia. Y hablo por todos en la banda. Frida tiene una hija, Niclas tiene dos hijos y Håkan tiene dos hijos y una bebé en casa. Pero para mí es muy importante el poder combinar mi vida familiar con la banda. Porque soy una madre con responsabilidades, pero no puedo dejar de ser quien soy y nunca abandonaría la música sólo porque soy madre. La maternidad no me impide ser quien soy. Y realmente no es tan complicado combinar los dos «mundos». Por supuesto que necesito ayuda desde casa y también hago todo lo que hay que hacer para que funcione. Por ejemplo, el llevar a mis hijos o a toda mi familia de gira. Dentro de la banda, y con nuestro equipo, somos también como una familia de hermanos y hermanas, y nos ayudamos mutuamente para hacer que todo sea lo más sencillo posible. E incluso, si hay algunos momentos más difíciles, cuando salimos al escenario, todo eso simplemente desaparece y sentimos el amor y la energía junto con nuestra pequeña multitud. Y eso es un sentimiento increíble. ¡Gracias!

Me gustó especialmente la canción «Again», pero en esa no cantas tú, canta Håkan. ¿Por qué en algunas canciones y partes es Håkan quien canta y no tú?

Cecilia: Mi voz es de alguna manera el espíritu y la esencia del sonido de The Baboon Shows. También puede ser bueno para la audiencia y para mi el tener un pequeño descanso, por decirlo de alguna manera. Y añado, ¡la voz de Håkan es impresionante! Y es bueno para mí tener un pequeño descanso para respirar, ponerme un poco de pintalabios, y tal vez, cambiarme de ropa (risa pillina).

Cecilia a veces empieza el show saltando entre la multitud y cantando allí la primera canción. Un comienzo impresionante, pero supongo que podría ser peligroso. ¿Has tenido alguna mala experiencia saltando entre la gente?

Cecilia: Desde que soy la Señorita Peligro me gusta que todo sea un poco peligroso (risas). No, bromas aparte… Supongo que puede ser peligroso, pero nuestra audiencia siempre me coge (¡sois muy amables!). Y trato de mostrar a la audiencia con mi cuerpo lo que voy a hacer en cada momento. Así evito evito el caerme. ¡Y hasta ahora todo bien! Pero evidentemente me lastimo de vez en cuando y mis piernas casi siempre lucen moretones y cicatrices de los shows. En general me encanta el lanzarme desde el escenario y estar entre la multitud. Pero a veces sucede que alguien me agarra el culo o hace tocamientos, y eso no es agradable… No es agradable en absoluto. Y rara vez sucede, pero cuando pasa, siempre le digo algo al público. Así me aseguro de que quien lo hizo sepa como me siento y que no me gusta. Y también para recordarle a la gente que no está bien tocar a las personas sin su permiso.

Vuestros shows siempre son siempre impresionantes, pero ¿qué truco haría el grupo en el escenario, pero nunca ha podido hacer? Fuego, humo, fuegos artificiales …

Cecilia: (Risas) Bueno, soy una persona de «acción» o cómo decirlo… también bastante impulsiva, así que, si se me ocurre hacer algo en el escenario, lo hago. Incluso si es peligroso o si puedo fallar. No me importa, sólo voy con esa idea fija en mente. Nunca voy con un plan previo en escena ni preparo nada para luego, me dejo llevar por el momento (risas). Una cosa que intenté hacer una vez, pero fracasé absolutamente, fue el caminar sobre las manos de la gente. Fue en el Festival AU en Frankfurt. Me las arreglé para ponerme de pie, pero me caí cuando intentaba caminar. Aunque costará realmente quiero intentar de nuevo este truco… ¡Y conseguirlo!

¿Cuál es tu canción favorita y por qué?

Cecilia: Mi canción favorita de The Baboon Show es probablemente “Radio Rebelde”. Me encanta la melodía y la melancolía que transmite la canción al mismo tiempo. Es esperanzadora y tiene un mensaje de unión y hermandad en las letras. ¡Para mi eso es una gran combinación! Y también es una buena canción para cantar al unísono.

Otra canción que realmente me gusta tocar en vivo es «Ref and the Red Card». Me encanta su energía y agresividad. Pero me gustan todas nuestras canciones y, si fuera posible, sería divertido tocarlas todas algún día. ¿Tal vez podamos hacer un concierto de tres noches seguidas tocando todas nuestras canciones desde el primer álbum hasta las más recientes? ¿Puede ser tal vez una idea para el futuro?

Radio Rebelde es un gran nombre para un disco. Se refiere a la radio que crearon Che Guevara y Fidel Castro cuando la Revolución se estaba llevando a cabo en Cuba. Recuerdo que The Baboon Show visitaron Cuba en 2015. ¿Es Cuba especial para vosotros? ¿Amas lo que hicieron Guevara, Cienfuegos y Castro?

Niclas: Sí. Radio Rebelde era el nombre de la estación de radio que usaban para transmitir su mensaje a la gente. Hemos visitado Cuba cuatro veces y tocado allí. Siempre ha sido fantástico. Cuba siempre tendrá un lugar especial en nuestros corazones. Y sí, hicieron cosas muy buenas. Se libraron del dictador fascista Batista y le devolvieron el país al pueblo. ¡Viva Cuba!

Es hora de hablar sobre la versión «Same Old Story». Es una canción fantástica con letras muy crudas. Fue escrita en los años 70 por Knutna Nävar, una banda sueca de rock progresivo comunista, y creo que es perfecta para una banda como The Baboon Show. ¿Por qué elegiste esta versión?

Niclas: La elegimos porque es una canción muy hermosa con una letra que podría haberse escrito hoy. Es siempre la misma mierda capitalista de nuestra sociedad en todas partes.

Finalmente, quiero preguntarte sobre la escena sueca. Todos los años, emergen muchas bandas fantásticas en tu país y tocan diferentes estilos, pero siempre tienen mucha calidad y grandes canciones: Sparzanza, Sabaton, Graveyard, In Flames, The Baboon Show, Horisont, Thundemother… Tal vez Abba fue la primera banda con éxito masivo, pero parece que Suecia quiere conquistar el mundo. ¿Por qué las bandas suecas son tan buenas?

Niclas: Sí, hay muchas bandas que aparecen por todas partes de nuestro país. No lo sé. ¿Quizás sencillamente estamos aburridos y no tenemos nada mejor que hacer que crear bandas y empezar a ensayar?

Últimamente estoy trabajando en un informe especial sobre «Canciones perfectas» y me encantaría que me dijeras tu opinión sobre estas canciones:

«London Calling» (The Clash): Gran canción de una gran banda. Pero tienen canciones mucho mejores. (Niclas)
«Fairytale of New York» (The Pogues): Nuestro encargado del merchandising Steffe me odiará por esto, pero nunca me han gustado los Pogues. Y odio las canciones sobre la navidad (Risas). (Niclas)
«Viva la Revolution» (The Adicts): Gran canción de punk rock. ¡Es un clásico! (Niclas)
«The Final Countdown» (Europe): ¡Es un himno sueco! Nunca me canso de ella. Gran disco también, pero mis álbumes favoritos son Wings Of Tomorrow y Out Of This World. (Niclas)

Hi, I have to tell you that, probably, “Radio Rebelde” is the best album of the last year. The first I listened to was absolutely shocking. After 20 years reviewing albums I think that this kind of albums only appear every 5 years. Does is Radio Rebelde your best album so?

Frida: Thank you so much!
We are really proud of Radio Rebelde. I think our sound has changed quite alot from the first album ’til now. From a more punkier sound to a heavier rock sound with more melodies. Still with a punkrock attitute though. It seems like our fans really like the new album and of course the new album is our favorite!

It seems that last year The Baboon Show finally conquered Spain. Nevertheless you always had lot of fans in the north: Euskadi and Catalunya. Do we can say that nowadays The Baboon Show has in Spain one of his biggest markets?

Frida: We love to come to your country to play and the people have really welcomed us with opened arms. You guys really know how to rock, haha!!! We’ve been touring in germany for many years and the countries around germany so we have built up a great following there. But in spain everything happend much faster. I guess you just get it 🙂

On June you are going to play in Madrid, Barcelona, Gijón, La Rioja and Vilagarcía de Arousa. Not bad! You were in Barcelona in Barna ‘n’ Roll 2017 and it will be your second time this year alongside Offspring. Tell me something about your first experience in Barna ‘n’ Roll, in my opinion the venue is really beautiful.

Frida: It’s such a beautiful venue and we had a blast playing there! But I remember it was super hot!!! No weather for vikings from the north. At the end of the evening Cecilia and I were laying on the stairs behind the stage totally excausted, but happy of course.

I think that The Baboon Show had a punk spirit but you currently sound more rock n’ roll. Anthem-songs and less speed is what we can wait in your upcoming albums?

Frida: I totally agree we sound more rock n roll now. And no I am not gonna tell you what the next The Baboon Show album is gonna sound like… great try tough!!!

Please, tell why did you choose The Baboon Show as a name? Why Baboons?

Cecilia: we wanted a name that was not “cool”, a name that made people react, and a name that was easy to remember. So The Baboon Show it was, Haha! When we were talking about band names we saw a monkey doing as good as the stock brokers at the stock market and in the Swedish parliament some were behaving like monkeys. So we figured, if a monkey can be in parliament and handling stocks, we can for sure deliver our kind of Baboon Show. Yeay!

I had not the opportunity to see you on a stage yet, but all the people who have seen The Baboon Show live have told me that your show is impressive and that Cecilia seems “the best Iggy Pop” on stage. Do you like to be “The new female Iggy pop”?

Cecilia: Oh! Thanks! I totally take that as a compliment even if I like to think of myself as “my own” and something more unique than just the female version of Iggy Pop. But I understand the comparison and that people needs something or someone to refer to. I’ve also been referred to as “The female Bon Scott” and “The Swedish Nina Hagen”. Thanks!

I have read that you have sons (me too) and I suppose that to tour and to be mother is something difficult. Did you have some weak moments and you miss home, or every time you get on stage you feel new energy?

Cecilia: That’s right. I’ve got a 6 year old son and a two months old baby boy. So of course when I’m away from home I miss my family a whole lot. And that goes for everyone in the band; Frida’s got a daughter, Niclas got two sons and Håkan has two sons and a baby girl at home. Although for me it’s very important to be able to combine my family life with my band life. Cause even if I’m a mother with responsibilities I can’t stop being who I am and I would never quit music just because I’m a mother. Motherhood doesn’t stop me from being who I am. And really it’s not that complicated to combine the two “worlds”. Of course I need support from home and also I do what I have to to make it work. For example to bring my kids or my whole family on tour. Within the band and with our crew we are like a family of brothers and sisters and we all help each other to make everything as smooth as possible. And even if some moments are tough when we go on stage all of that just disappears and we feel the love and the energy together with our crowd. And that’s an amazing feeling. Thank you!

I specially loved “Again” but you are not singing this song, Hakan sings. Why in some songs and parts is Hakan who sings and not you?

Cecilia: my voice is somehow the spirit and the essence of The Baboon Shows sound. Although since it’s rather “special” it can be nice for the audience to get a little break from it or how to say. And also, Håkans voice is awesome! And it’s nice for me to get a little break to take my breath, put on lipstick and maybe change my outfit, Hihihi

Cecilia sometimes starts the show jumping in the crowd and singing there the first song. An impressive beginning but I suppose that could be dangerous for you. Did you have some bad experience jumping in the crowd?

Cecilia: since I’m mrs danger I like if it’s a little bit dangerous, hahaha. No, jokes aside. I guess it can be dangerous but our audience always catch me (you are so nice!) and I try to show the audience with my body what I’m about to do. To avoid being dropped. And so far so good! But of course I hurt myself from time to time and my legs pretty much always have bruises and scars from shows. Overall I love stage diving and being in the crowd. But sometimes it happens that someone grab my ass or are touchy, and that’s not nice. Not nice at all. Although it rarely happens, but when it does I always say something about it to the crowd. To make sure the one who did it knows that I felt it and that I do t appreciate it, and also to tell people that it’s totally not ok to touch people without permission.

Your shows are always impressive but which trick would Cecilia do on stage but never managed to? Fire, smoke, fireworks…
Cecilia: Hahahaha. Well, I’m an “action” person or how to say – and also rather impulsive- so if I think of doing something on stage I just do it, even if it’s dangerous or if I might fail. To me it doesn’t matter, I just go with the feeling. I never stage or prepare anything ahead, I just go with the flow, hahaha. One thing I tried to do once, but totally failed with, was walking on the hands of the audience. It was at the AU fest in Frankfurt. I managed to stand, but I fell when I tried to walk. Although this stunt I really wanna try again! And succeed with!

Which is your favorite song and why? And which one is the best you ever have written?

Cecilia: My fav TBS song is probably Radio Rebelde. I love the melody and the melancholy of the song at the same time as it’s hopeful and have a uniting message in the lyrics. To me that’s a great combination! And also it’s a good sing along song. Another song that I really really like to play live is “Ref and the red card”. I love it’s energy and aggressiveness. But I like all our songs and if it was possible it would be fun to play them all someday. Maybe we can do a 3 night in a row concert playing all our songs from the first album to the most resent? Maybe an idea for future?!?!

Radio Rebelde is a great name for an album. It was the Radio that Che Guevara and Fidel Castro created when the Revolution was going on on Cuba. I remember that The Baboon Show visited Cuba in 2015. Does is Cuba special for you? Do you love what Guevara and Castro did in Cuba?

Yes. Radio Rebelde was the name of the radio station they used to get their message out to the people. We have visited Cuba four times and played there. It’s been fantastic every time. Cuba will always have a special place in our hearts. Yes, they did good things. The got rid of the fascist dictator Batista and gave the country back to the people. Viva Cuba! (Niclas)

Time to talk about your cover “Same Old Story”. It is a fantastic song with raw lyrics. It was written in the 70s by Knutna Nävar, a Swedish communist prog band, and I think is perfect for a band like The Baboon Show. Why did you choose this cover?

We chose it because it’s such a beautiful song with lyrics that could have been written today. It’s still the same shit everywhere in our capitalist society. (Niclas)

Finally, I want to ask you about the Swedish scene. Every year a lot of fantastic bands emerge in your country and they play different styles, but always have a fantastic skills and great songs: Sparzanza, Sabaton, Graveyard, In Flames, The Baboon Show, Horisont, Thundemother… Maybe Abba was the first massive band, but it seems that Sweden wants to conquer the world. Why the bands in Sweden are so good?

Yes, there are a lot of bands coming up everywhere in our country. I don’t know. Maybe we’re just bored and have nothing better to do than to start bands and rehearse? Hahaha!! (Niclas)
