Entrevista a Tommi Holappa, guitarrista de Dozer: ‘No tenemos planes para grabar un nuevo álbum’

 

SofN: !Buenos días! Primero de todo quiero decir que es un veradero honor tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a una de mis bandas preferidas y una referencia en el mundo del stoner rock. ¡Gracias por vuestro tiempo!

Tommi: Hey! Tommi de Dozer al habla. Gracias por querer entrevistarnos!

SofN: He seguido de cerca vuestra carrera desde 1995 hasta ahora, he disfrutado con todos vuestros trabajos pero necesito nueva música de Dozer… supongo que esta pregunta os aburriará pero… es necesaria! ¿Estáis trabajando en un nuevo álbum?

Wow! ¿Nos has seguido desde el principio? Esto es genial! Y significa que almenos serás tan viejo como nostros! Jajaj!

Si, mucha gente nos pregunta por nuevo material pero lo siento, tengo que decirte que por el momento no tenemos planes para grabar un nuevo trabajo o componer nuevos temas. Pero no se sabe que puede pasar en el futuro, quizás en algun momento sentimos la necesidad de hacerlo, pero por ahora no lo tenemos previsto.

SofN: Vuesto último trabajo fue un EP titulado Vultures, fue recibido con ilusión tant por fans como medios pero no sirvió para que hicierais un LP. ¿No encontrasteis la motivación para seguir creando nueva música ?

Los temas del EP Vultures fueren escritas en 2005, fueron demos descartadas del disco Through the eyes of heathens que no logramos meter en el trabajo por que pensamos que no encajaban en el álbum de una manera u otra, por lo que quedaron fuera. Pero en 2012 o 2013, cuando decidimos volver a tocar juntos escuchamos esos temas y pensamos que eran demasiado buenos para estar en casa acumulando polvo, así que decidimos lanzarlos digitalmente.

SofN: Vuestras apariciones en vivo son escasas también. ¿Porqué? ¿No disfrutaís en directo?

Si, solo hacemos algunos shows de vez en cuando. Todavía disfrutamos tocando con Dozer y seguimos siendo buenos amigos, pero algunos de nosotros disfrutamos más que otros haciendo guras, tenemos familia, niños, trabajos regulares y algunos tenemos otras bandas en las que también tocamos, así que decidimos pasarlo bien con Dozer pero escogiendo uno o dos shows de vez en cuando.

SofN: Soís cuatro músicos y supongo que a veces puede resultar complicado poneros todos de acuerdo. Como funciona (funcionaba) el proceso creativo en Dozer? ¿Qué puedes comentar sobre el trabajo juntos?

¡Actualmente no es muy complicado! Por ejemplo, la forma en que escribimos canciones (es lo mismo que hago en Greenleaf también), todos estamos involucrados en el proceso de escritura, es posible que en casa se me ocurra un buen riff y luego lo llevo al local donde ensayamos. Después nos aferramos a ella hasta que se convierte en una canción y todos estén satisfechos con ella. A veces va rápido y otras veces pueden pasar meses antes de que estemos satisfechos, pero generalmente se logra. Si vemos que no nos ponemos de acuerdo, descartamos la idea o el riff a la papelera (o la guardamos para más adelante) y comenzamos a trabajar en otras ideas.

Creo que esto es importante cuando tocas en una banda, trabajar todos juntos y que todos se sienten involucrados. ¡entonces, todos felices!

SofN: Con la perspectiva que da el tiempo, ¿de qué decisiones os sentís más orgullosos y qué otras deberíais haber tomado diferente?

No creo que hayamos tomado malas decisiones en realidad. Por ejemplo, en 2009 dejamos de actuar en directo, estubimos girando y publicando álbumes por más de diez años y apartando las demás cosas de la vida, así que llegó el momento de parar y hacer otras cosas como estudiar, trabajos normales, incrementar la familia… Vivir vidas más normales en lugar de estar siempre de gira.

Y cosas de las que me siento más orgulloso… bueno, de todo lo que he hecho con Dozer. Toda la música que hemos creado y los shows que hemos hecho!

SofN: Suecia tiene una espectacular escena de rock y metal, hablando específicamente de la escena stoner y sus bandas, habéis exportado bandas como Witchcraft, Graveyard, Lowrider, Greenleaf, Spiritual Beggars, Kamchatka, Truckfighters, Siena Root, Mustach…¿Cómo Suecia, un país tan diferente a lo que es Palm Desert, tiene posiblemente la mejor escena stoner de Europa?

¡Es porqué es totalmente opuesto a Palm Desert! Es frío, oscuro y más frío todo el tiempo, así que no hay nadas más que hacer que tocar música, jajaja! (es broma),

Realmente no sé porqué hay tantas bandas buenas de stoner en Suecia, pero sobretodo hay muchas buenas bandas de la mayoría de géneros que provienen de Suecia, supongo que es porque es bastante fácil comenzar aquí, se puede obtener mucha ayuda del gobierno con todo tipo de cosas como clases de música, locales para ensayar, etc. Así que no es muy costoso crear una banda cuando eres un novato.

SofN: En unas semanas vais a venir a Madrid a tocar en uno de los festivales más bonitos que hay en España, el KristonFest. Pero nostoros vivimos en Barcelona y no podremos veros por aquí… ¿Cuándo váis a venir a Barcelona ?

Tocamos en Madrid anteriormente en 2005 acompañando a Mastodon, pero hace demasiado para recordarlos! Jajaja! De todas formas, estamos desando tocar en Kristonfest. Toqué allí con Greenleaf hace un par de años y ¡me encantó el festival!

No sé cuando iremos a Barcelona pero ¡espero que sea pronto!

SofN: ¿Qué clase de show podremos ver de Dozer allí, en el KristonFest ?

Mucha mucha energía, sudor, guitarras ruidosas, grandes sonrisas y quizás, algo de sangre! Jaja! Oh sí, y un montón de buenos temas!

SofN: ¿Eres capaz de selecionar los cinco temas que mejor definen la carrera de Dozer?

“Supersoul”, “Hills have eyes”, “Big sky theory”.

Estos tres temas definent perfectamente la evolución de Dozer. Por cada álbum publicado crecimos un poquito.

SofN: En nuestra revista nos gustan mucho los Tops, puedes citar cinco álbumes que hayan dejado más huella en el sonido de la banda?

SofN: Good morning,  first of all I want to say that it’s a big honor to have the chance to interview one of my most beloved band and a reference in the stoner world. Thanks so much for your time.

Tommi: Hey! Tommi from Dozer here. Thank you for wanting to interview us!

SofN: I have closely followed Dozer since 1995 to now, I really enjoyed with all works but I need new Dozer music! I guess that this question is a bit boring for the band… but I need to do it! Are you working in a new album ?

Wow! You have followed us since the start, that’s cool! Then you must be at least as old as we are, hahaha! Yes, a lot of people keep asking for new Dozer material but I’m sorry to have to say that at the moment there are no plans to record a new album or write new songs. But who knows what happens in the future, maybe someday we fell like doing it but like I said at the moment there ara no plans for new stuff.

SofN: Your last work, the EP called Vultures, was received with joy by the fans and magazines, but it wasn’t followed up by a proper full sized album. The band didn’t find the necessary feelings to continue creating new music ?

The songs on the Vultures EP were written and recorded around 2005 and it’s actually demo songs for Through the eyes of heathens that we thought didn´t fit the album in one way or another so they were left out. But around 2012-13 when we decided to start playing live shows again we listen to these tracks and thought that they were too good to just gather dust at home so we decide to release them digitally.

SofN: Your live appearences are very limited too. Why ? Does the band not enjoy with it ?

Yes we only do a few shows every now and then. We still enjoy playing with Dozer and we are all still good friends but some of us enjoy touring more than others and also we all have families, kids, regular jobs and some of us have other bands we play in so we have decided to just have fun with Dozer and choose a show or two every now and then.

SofN: You are four musicians and I imagine that sometimes can be complicated to get in agreement. How does the creative process work in Dozer ?Can you explain how is the coexitence between us?

Actually it’s not so complicated at all! For example the way we write songs (it’s the same way I do it in Greenleaf also), everybody is involved in the writing process, I might come up with a cool riff at home and then I bring it to the rehearsal room and we jam on it until it has turned into a song and everyone in the band is satisfied with it. Sometimes it goes fast and sometimes it might take months before we are satisfied but usually it gets done. But if we can’t agree we usually just throw the song idea/riff in the trash can(or save it for later) and start working on some other ideas. I think this is important when you play in band that you work together on everything and that everyone feels involed, then usually every one is happy!

SofN: With the perspective of time, what decisions are you most proud of and what do you think you should have taken before and what do you think was wrong?

I don’t think that we have taken any decisions that felt wrong in the end. For example when we stopped playing in 2009, we had been touring and releasing albums for more than 10 years and put everything else on the side so it was just time to stop and do other things in your life like studying, get regular jobs, start families etc etc. Live more normal lives instead of being on tour all the time.

And things I´m proud of…well it’s everything we have done with Dozer. All the music we have written all the shows we have played!

SofN: Sweden have got a spectacularrock and metal scene, and talkingspecifically about stoner and related bands, Sweden has exportedbands like Witchcraft, more bluesy Graveyard, Lowrider, Greenleaf, Spiritual Beggars, Kamchatka, Truckfighters, Siena Root, Mustach…How come Sweden, a country that’s as different as Palm Desert as one can be, hasprobably the best stoner scene in Europe?

It’s because it’s to total opposite of Palm Desert! It’s cold, dark and cold all the time so there is nothing else to do than to play music, hahaha just kidding! I really don’t know why there are so many good stoner bands from Sweden but over all there are a lot of good bands from most music genres coming from Sweden and my guess is that it´s because it´s pretty easy to start a band here, we can get quite a lot of help from the government with all kinds of things like music lessons, rehearsal rooms etc etc So it doean’s have to be expensive to be in a band when you are a beginner.

SofN: You will come to Madrid for first time in few months in one of the most wonderful spanish festivals, the KristonFest, but we live in Barcelona and we can’t enjoy Dozer here. When we will wesee Dozer playing in Barcelona ?

Actually we have played in Madrid once before in 2005 as support for Mastodon. But that was so long ago so who remembers that hahaha! Anyway we are really looking forward to Kristonfest! I played there with Greenleaf a couple years ago and loved the festival! Don´t know when we will play Barcelona but I hope soon!

SofN: What kind of show of your band we will live there, in KristonFest ?

Lot’s of energy, sweat, loud guitars, huge smiles and maybe a some blood! Hahaha! Oh yeah and a whole bunch of good songs!

SofN: Are you able to select few Dozer tracks that best define your career until today?

«Supersoul», «Hills have eyes», «Big sky theory». That’s pretty much the evolution of Dozer in 3 steps.For every album we release we grew a little bit.
