Entrevista a Robert y Yorick de Walg: ‘Todos los días recibimos mensajes de personas cuyas vidas han mejorado gracias a los álbumes’

Hola, chicos. Muchas gracias por vuestro tiempo y felicidades por vuestra corta pero intensa carrera. Llevamos un par de semanas escuchando III, vuestro reciente disco, estamos enamorados de él.

¿Cómo estáis? ¿Os está tratando bien el invierno en los Países Bajos?

Muchas gracias. Muchas gracias por hacer esta entrevista. Nos va muy bien, aunque nos vendrían bien más nieve y escarcha.  Hace años que no tenemos nieve de verdad aquí en los Países Bajos. El frío es una gran fuente de inspiración.

Últimamente empiezo las entrevistas hablando de la pandemia y lo que supuso para cada banda. En vuestro caso, la pandemia fue la que os impulsó a crear esta banda. ¿Cómo surgió la oportunidad y cómo lo hacíais para ensayar, por ejemplo?

Se podría decir que la pandemia ayudó a crear Walg. Por casualidad, Robert se puso en contacto con Yorick después de ocho años y le envió unas maquetas de black metal en las que estaba trabajando. Debido a la pandemia, la otra banda de Yorick quedó en suspenso. Impulsado por toda la frustración de la pandemia, Yorick decidió añadir algunas voces a las maquetas de Roberts y así nació Walg (en: asco).

Para los lectores españoles que aún no os conozcan, en vuestras palabras, ¿me podéis comentar quiénes sois y qué estilo / influencias tenéis?

En pocas palabras, black metal melódico holandés con elementos folk y sinfónicos. Tenemos black metal (melódico) como ingrediente principal y añadimos varias especias aquí y allá cuando nos apetece.

Los temas líricos se inspiran en la estupidez general de la humanidad. A menudo nos repugna la especie humana en general, y esto (por supuesto) sirve de gran inspiración para el black metal. La desesperación, la aversión, la tristeza y la melancolía son los ingredientes principales de la mayoría de las letras.

Para fans de bandas como Old Man’s Child, Dimmu Borgir (años 90, principios de los 2000), Dissection y Stormlord, por ejemplo. Nos encantan estas bandas.

Sois un dúo fuera de lo común: un vocalista y un instrumentista. ¿Cómo funciona el proceso creativo en Walg?

Como estamos los dos solos, creamos la música de una manera parecida al ping pong. Robert empieza creando la música y se la envía a Yorick para que pueda centrarse en las letras y grabar las voces.

Después hacemos un ping pong hasta que estamos contentos con el resultado final. Como los dos tenemos nuestros propios dominios, es un proceso muy tranquilo y relajado.

III es otro gran disco, black metal melódico muy impactante y crudo pero con melodías limpias y preciosas. ¿Estáis contentos con la dirección que está tomando el sonido de la banda?

Hasta aquí todo bien. Creemos que hemos encontrado nuestro sonido con el segundo álbum y lo hemos ampliado con el tercero. Nunca esperamos el alcance y las respuestas positivas que hemos recibido. Todos los días recibimos mensajes de personas cuyas vidas han mejorado gracias a los álbumes. Es realmente asombroso, inspirador y más de lo que podríamos haber soñado.

Lo mejor de componer los álbumes es que nos dejamos llevar por la corriente. Los discos casi se escriben solos. No tenemos bloqueos porque hacemos lo que nos gusta.

Ahora mismo estamos trabajando en el cuarto álbum y está quedando muy bien. Será más melódico, agresivo, oscuro y melancólico que los anteriores.

Os formasteis en 2021 y de momento vais a disco por año. Pese a la calidad de vuestro trabajo, de momento no tenéis contrato discográfico. ¿Cómo compagináis vuestra vida laboral / personal con todo el trabajo de Walg (componer, grabar, merch, vídeos…) ?

Buena pregunta. Lo que pasa con Walg es que disfrutamos mucho haciéndolo, así que es difícil darse cuenta de cuánto tiempo y energía le dedicas. Hasta ahora hemos podido compaginarlo con el trabajo y la familia. Y como casi todo es bricolaje, podemos rodar de verdad cuando tenemos inspiración. Por eso somos capaces de sacar tres discos en menos de dos años.

Poco a poco estáis ampliando vuestro círculo de fans dentro y fuera de vuestras fronteras. En España he visto que ya tenéis una buena base de fans. ¿Ha llegado el momento de intentar salir de gira para daros a conocer? Entiendo que es complejo tocar en directo con el formato de dúo que tenéis.

De momento no tenemos planeado ningún concierto ni intención de salir de gira. Quién sabe lo que nos deparará el futuro.

He estado mirando vuestros vídeos en YouTube y, wooow, me han encantado. Cualquiera diría que son de una banda con dos o tres años de vida… ¿Cómo lo hacéis para crear videos así, con pocos recursos?

Gracias, es estupendo oírlo. Hacer vídeos es a veces lo mismo que hacer música, sólo tienes que dejarte llevar por la creatividad del momento. Hoy en día las cosas no tienen por qué ser caras.

En cuanto al artwork, también es genial. En I y II ya eran interesantes, pero en III vemos que el trabajo ha mejorado mucho y es realmente atractivo. ¿Lo hacéis vosotros u os ayuda algún artista?

Todo nuestro material gráfico también es completamente «hágalo usted mismo». Creemos que el arte es una parte importante de nuestra música. Es lo primero que ve la gente. Y creemos que podemos captar mejor el sentimiento de la música si lo hacemos nosotros mismos.

¿Qué podemos esperar de Walg en el futuro?

Más de todo. Ya estamos trabajando duro con nuevas canciones que iremos publicando a medida que avance el año. El cuarto álbum está previsto para finales de 2023 o inicios de 2024. Además, esperamos otra oleada de CD’s para III (oferta limitada) en un futuro próximo.

La vida nos anima a soñar, a cumplir las metas que tenemos en mente. ¿Qué sueños realistas tiene todavía Walg que quiera cumplir?

Nuestro sueño es seguir adelante y poder hacer lo que hacemos actualmente. Nos encanta componer música nueva, inspirar a la gente y estamos deseando ver adónde nos llevará el futuro.

Hi guys, thank you very much for your time and congratulations for your short but intense career. We’ve been listening to III, your recent album, for a couple of weeks now, we are in love with it. 

How are you doing, is the winter in the Netherlands treating you well? 

Greetings! Many thanks for doing this interview. We are doing great although we could use more snow and frost here!  It’s been some years since we had proper good old snow here in The Netherlands. The cold weather is great for inspiration. 

Lately I start interviews talking about the pandemic and what it meant for each band. In your case, it was the pandemic that prompted you to create this band, how did the opportunity arise and how did you rehearse for example? 

You could say that the pandemic helped create Walg. Through some random coincidence Robert contacted Yorick after eight years and sent him some black metal demos he was working on. Because of the pandemic Yorick’s other band was put on-hold. Fueled by all the pandemic frustration, Yorick decided to add some vocals to Roberts demos and thus Walg (en: disgust) was born. 

For the Spanish readers who don’t know you yet, in your own words, can you tell me who you are and what style / influences you have?

In a nutshell Dutch melodic black metal with folk and symphonic elements. We have (melodic) black metal as the main ingredient and add various spices here and there whenever we feel like it. 

The lyrical themes are inspired by the overall stupidity of humankind. We’re often disgusted by the human species in general, and this (of course) serves as great inspiration for black metal. Despair, loathing, gloom and melancholy are the main ingredients for most of the lyrics.    

For fans of bands like Old  man’s Child, Dimmu Borgir (90’s, early 00’s), Dissection and Stormlord for example. We love these bands. 

You are an unusual duo, a vocalist and an instrumentalist, how does the creative process work in Walg? 

Seeing it’s just the two of us we have a ping pong kinda way of creating the music. Robert starts with creating the music and sends it over to Yorick so he can focus on the lyrics and record the vocals. 

After that we ping pong the track back and forth until we are happy with the final result. Seeing we both have our own domain it’s a very chill and laid back process. 

III is another great album, melodic black metal very hard hitting and raw but with clean and beautiful melodies, are you happy with the direction the band’s sound is taking? 

So far so good! We feel like we really found our sound with the II album and expanded on that further with the III album. We never expected the outreach and positive responses we got. We’re getting messages every day from people whose lives are better because of the albums. This is really amazing, inspiring and more than we could have dreamed of. 

The great thing about writing the albums is that we’re basically just going with the flow. The albums almost write themselves. We don’t have writer’s blocks because we do what we love. 

We’re currently working on the fourth album and it’s coming together nicely. It will be more melodic, aggressive, dark and melancholic than the stuff we’ve written before. 

You formed in 2021 and at the moment you are releasing one album per year. Despite the quality of your work, you don’t have a record deal at the moment. How do you combine your work / personal life with all the work of Walg (composing, recording, merch, videos…)? 

Good question! The thing with Walg is we enjoy doing it very much, so it’s hard to notice how much time and energy you put into it. So far we have been able to combine it with work and family. And since almost everything is DIY, we can really roll when we have inspiration. This is why we’re able to release three albums in less than two years.  

Little by little you are expanding your circle of fans inside and outside your borders. In Spain I’ve seen that you already have a good fan base, is it time to try to go on tour to make yourselves known? I understand that it is complex to play live with the duo format you have.

At the moment we have no live shows planned and no intention of touring. Who knows what the future holds. 

I’ve been watching your videos on YouTube and, wooow, I love them. Anybody would say they are from a two or three years old band? How do you manage to create videos like this, with few resources? 

Thanks, that is great to hear. Making videos is sometimes the same as making music, you just have to roll with the creativity of the moment. Nowadays things don’t have to be expensive. 

As for the artwork, it’s also great. In I and II they were already interesting, but in III we can see that the artwork has improved a lot and it’s really attractive. Do you do it yourselves or do you get help from an artist? 

All of our artwork is also completely DIY. We think art is an important part of our music. It’s the first thing people see. And we believe we can capture the feeling of the music best when we do it ourselves.  

What can we expect from Walg in the future?

More of everything! We are already hard at work with new songs which we will be releasing as the year progresses. The fourth album is set to Q4 2023/Q1 2024. Besides that, we are expecting another wave of CD’s for III (limited supply) in the near future.

Life encourages us to dream, to meet goals that we have in mind. What realistic dreams does Walg still have that you want to fulfill?

Our dream is to keep going and be able to do what we are currently doing. We love writing new music, inspiring people and we look forward to seeing where the future will take us.
