Este Azkena promete de lo lindo… El rutilante cartel de la presente edición guarda algunos caramelos realmente para gourmets, y si hay una banda que difícilmente podremos ver por estos lares esta es Meat Puppets. Desde Phoenix, Arizona, se formaron a principios de los 80 y en el 85 grabaron la que para muchos es su obra cumbre: Meat Puppets II. Un disco que no solamente está en muchos rankings de los mejores mil discos de la historia, sino que ha influenciado a decenas de bandas hasta el punto que han llegado a ser considerados como uno de los grupos sin el cual la generación grunge de los 90 nunca hubiera existido. Ellos se consideran simplemente como una banda de rock, pero el country, el punk y la psicodelia siempre ha estado muy presente en este inclasificable trío.
Saltaron a la fama cuando en 1994 Kurt Cobain, líder de Nirvana, les invitó a grabar y a tocar, en nada más y nada menos, que en su Unplugged in New York. Considerado el mejor desenchufado de la historia por muchos entendidos y en el que llegaron a meter hasta tres canciones de Meat Puppets: “Oh Me”. “Plateau” y “Lake of Fire”. La verdad es que estos temas suenan de forma bastante diferente que en las manos de Nirvana, pero aquí está la gracia de este trío formado por los hermanos Curt y Cris Kirkwood junto a Derrick Bostrom. No es que Curt sea el tipo más hablador del mundo, pero es un auténtico placer el haber podido entrevistar a un grupo tan especial.

SofN: Hola, Curt. Ante todo, muchas gracias por dedicarnos un rato para contestar las preguntas de Science of Noise. He visto que estáis tocando por Estados Unidos… ¿Qué tal va todo?
Las cosas marchan muy bien… ahora dentro de unos días vamos a la Costa Este para tocar unos conciertos más
SofN: En junio os tenemos en Europa. Holanda, Bélgica, Inglaterra, Alemania…Veo que en Bélgica vuestro concierto está ya sin entradas. Desde 2015 en Inglaterra que no tocabais en el viejo continente.
La verdad es que no tengo países favoritos… Me encanta viajar y visitar Europa es siempre un regalo excepcional.
SofN: He escuchado vuestro nuevo disco Dusty Notes. ¿Cómo está funcionando? ¿Estáis contentos con la opinión de fans y prensa? Me encanta el enfoque country de temas como “Dusty Notes”.
Nos encanta tocarlo en directo. Prensa y fans han sido muy amables respecto al disco.
SofN: Una de vuestras marcas personales es la combinación de voces entre tú y Cris. ¿Cuándo empezasteis a mediados de los 80 en vuestro Phoenix natal era algo que teníais premeditado desde un principio o simplemente funcionó?
No lo premeditamos de inicio. Tuvimos que aprender cómo hacerlo y luego empezamos con las armonías de la canción “Up on the Sun”.
SofN: Os veremos en junio en el Azkena y sinceramente, creo que es el festival perfecto para vosotros. Vais a tocar junto a The Cult, Stray Cats, Wilco… ¿Conocíais el Azkena?
Había oído hablar de él. Parece que lo vamos a pasar en grande.
SofN: La última vez que tocasteis en España fue en Barcelona fue en el Primavera Sound, un festival orientado al indie y a lo comercial. ¿Qué tal fue la experiencia? ¿Preferís tocar en festivales de rock, alternativos o incluso metal?
La verdad es que no tenemos grandes preferencias respeto a los festivales… Todo sitio es bueno para nosotros.
SofN: He estado mirando y veo que Meat Puppets tocó en Barcelona en 1994, supongo que sería tras el éxito de tocar en el unplugged de Nirvana. ¿Qué tal os fue en Barcelona en Zeleste?
La verdad es que no recuerdo haber tocado en Barcelona en los 90, pero sí recuerdo haber tocado en 2012. Pudimos visitar muchas partes de España y la verdad es que la recepción de la gente fue maravillosa y el país es muy bonito.
SofN: Si te soy sincero en España conocíamos muy poco a Meat Puppets hasta que tocasteis en el Unplugged in New York de Nirvana. “Oh Me”, “Lake of Fire” and “Plateau” son canciones excepcionales. Supongo que Kurt Cobain era un gran fan de los Meat Puppets. ¿Por qué Nirvana escogieron vuestras canciones? ¿No tenían temas suficientes para el unplugged?
Me dijeron que querían tocarlas porque les gustaban mucho esas canciones. Tenían muchos temas propios que podrían haber utilizado, pero decidieron hacer las nuestras por variedad… supongo.
SofN: ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de estar tocando en el Unplugged in New York? He visto decenas de veces el video y creo que la atmósfera del momento fue especial, única… ¿Sentíais que en ese momento estabais en uno de los momentos cumbre de la música de los 90?
Yo creo que es una actuación excepcional y así lo sentimos mientras tocábamos. Estuve mirando todo el show fuera del escenario desde el principio excepto cuando tuvimos que tocar y la verdad es que fue mágico.
SofN: Me es realmente describir vuestro estilo en palabras… country, punk, psicodelia… ¿Cómo describiríais el estilo de Meat Puppets para aquellos que nunca os han escuchado?
Simplemente te diría que somos una banda de rock.
SofN: Ahora mismo estoy trabajando en un proyecto en el que hablamos sobre “canciones perfectas”. ¿Me podrías dar tu opinión sobre las siguientes canciones?
«Stairway to Heaven» (Led Zeppelin): Una de mis favoritas de mi juventud… Siempre es bueno escucharla.
«Jesus Christ Pose» (Soundgarden): Una de las canciones más convincentes de Soundgarden.
«Final Countdown» (Europe): No está nada mal por lo que yo recuerdo.
SofN: Y hablando de canciones perfectas… Desde tu punto de vista, ¿cuál es la mejor canción que tú has escrito y cuál es la mejor canción que has escuchado? He visto que soléis tocar versiones de otras bandas como “Sloop John B” de Beach Boys, “(Hey Baby que pasó” o temas de los Beatles, ZZ Top. ¿Tu favorita es alguna de estas?
La verdad es que no tengo ninguna favorita. Me siento my apegado a las mías como para elegir una. Sobre la mejor que haya escuchado… Hay demasiadas canciones geniales para que elija las más perfectas … hay miles.

SofN: Hi Curt! First of all, thank you very much for dedicating some time to answer these questions for Science of Noise. I have seen that you are touring around USA currently. How are you going these days?
Things are going very well…headed to the east coast for more shows in a few days.
SofN: On June you are going to be in Europe. Holland, Belgium, England, Germany… Do you have a special or favourite country to play in Europe? In Belgium your show is sold out! The last time you came to Europe was in 2015 in England.
I don’t really have any favorites…I love to travel and visiting Europe is always a rare treat.
SofN: I have listened to “Dusty Notes”, How is working? Are you happy with press and fans opinions? I love your country approaching in songs like “Dusty Notes”.
It’s really fun to play live.Press and fans have been very kind to us about this album.
SofN: One of your trademarks is the voice combination between Curt and Cris. When you started up in the early 80’s in Phoenix, it was something you wanted to do since the beginning or it just was something natural?
We didn’t at first… we had to learn how and then started doing harmonies on «Up on the Sun».
SofN: We are going to see you on scene on next June in Azkena Rock Festival. I think is the perfect festival for a band like Meat Puppets. Are you going to play alongside bands like The Cult, Wilco and Stray Cats. Did you know the Festival?
I’d heard of it… sounds like a lot of fun.
SofN: Last time you played in Spain was in Barcelona in Primavera Sound Festival (an indie festival). One of the biggest festivals in Europe. How it was the experience? Where does Meat Puppets prefer? indie festivals, rock festivals or metal festivals?
We have no preferences…any place that lets us play is a good place.
SofN: I remember that in 1994 The Meat Puppets played in Barcelona. I suppose it was after the success of Nirvana’s Unplugged in New York. How was it to play in Barcelona for the first time in a big venue like Zeleste?
I don’t remember playing Barcelona in the 90’s, but I remember 2012 and we saw a lot of Spain – really enjoyed the reception and the country is beautiful.
SofN: Is Meat Puppets II the most successful album in your career? I have got the book 1001 Albums You Have to Listen to Before You Die and your album is there. Is this an honour? It was issued in 1984. Sincerely, do you think Meat Puppets anticipate the grunge years?
It’s an honor indeed. I Think in the long run it’s probably had the most attention paid to it. We had no idea that grunge would happen…we just wanted to make a folk album.
SofN: Well, in Spain we did not know the Meat Puppets until you played in Nirvana’s Unplugged. We loved “Oh Me”, “Lake of Fire” and “Plateau”. ¡Amazing songs! I suppose Kurt Cobain was a big fan of Meat Puppets. Why did Nirvana choose your songs? Did they have no songs enough for an unplugged?
They told me the wanted to play them because they were very fond of those songs. They had plenty of their own songs they could’ve done but decided to do ours for variety, I suppose.
SofN: What do you remember of being playing in Unplugged in New York? I have seen several times the video and the atmosphere seemed unique. Did you feel that you were in one of the musical highlights of the 90’s?
I knew it was a great performance while it was happening…I watched the whole show from off stage except for when I was playing and it was quite magical.
SofN: It is not really easy to describe your music style… country, punk, psychedelia… How do you can define Meat Puppets’ music style for those who never have had contact with your stuff?
I just say we’re a rock band.
SofN: Finally, I am working on a special report about “perfect songs”. Please, can you tell me your opinion about these ones?
«Stairway to Heaven» (Led Zeppelin): A favorite from my teens… always good.
«Jesus Christ Pose» (Soundgarden): One of the band’s most compelling songs
«Final Countown» (Europe): Not a bad song from what I remember.
SofN: Talking about perfect songs… From your standpoint, which is the best rock song you ever written? And Which is the perfect song ever? I have seen that the band played some cover songs like “Sloop John B”, “(Hey Baby) que paso” and Beatles and ZZ Top stuff. Maybe some of these ones?
I haven’t got a favorite…I’m too close to them to tell. There are too many great songs for me to choose the most perfect…there are thousands.
