Entrevista a Jeff Scott Soto: ‘No sé si alguna vez habrá un tema que me defina, y veo eso como algo positivo’

Hola Jeff, gracias por tu tiempo. ¿En qué andas metido?

Estoy de promo del nuevo disco de SOTO y grabando lo nuevo de Sons of Apollo. Cada día está lleno de una energía maravillosa.

Origami (2019) está a punto de salir. ¿Qué nos puedes decir de él?

Es un álbum de buena música, la verdad es que poco más se puede decir… vertimos nuestros corazones en hacer el mejor álbum posible, como haría cualquier artista, y lo logramos. Ahora toca sentarnos y ver si el resto del mundo se sienta a la mesa con nosotros.

Has trabajado con tantos artistas y en estilos tan diversos… por ejemplo, tenemos metal neo clásico con Yngwie o Axel Rudi Pell, AOR con W.E.T. o prog con Sons of Apollo. ¿Qué te queda por hacer? ¿Quizá cantar black metal?

Ja ja, nada de black metal para mi, tengo un límite y sé a lo que quiero que se me una, ja ja. Para ser honestos, amo muchos estilos de rock, y soy afortunado por que mis influencias me hayan permitido expandirme en mis retos como cantante y artista. Y aún más importante, tengo la suerte de tener una base de fans que me han permitido explorar facetas muy diferentes durante las últimas tres décadas.

De todos los estilos que has practicado, ¿cual te gusta más? ¿Cuál crees que le va mejor a tu voz?

No tengo un favorito, tengo demasiados aspectos de mí mismo que disfruto haciendo tanto como el último, por lo que continúo abordándolos todos. Me impiden aburrirme, supongo. Solía ser criticado por no estar centrado en un solo género, ahora gusta que haya abordado tantos, ¡este es el tipo de artista que me esforzaba por ser!

¿Trabajarías de nuevo con gente como, por ejemplo, Axel Rudi Pell o Yngwie Malmsteen o esas puertas ya se han cerrado?

NUNCA cierro puertas a nadie con quien haya trabajado. Esos dos son tan importantes en el desarrollo de mi carrera y vida que daría la bienvenida a la oportunidad de hacer algo con ellos. Mis pensamientos han cambiado a lo largo de mi vida y carrera pero, donde estoy ahora mismo, no tengo nada más que amor y respeto a aquellos que confiaron en mí, así que es algo que siempre consideraría.

Tienes un nuevo álbum, y los últimos dos años han sido bastante productivos. ¿Hay planes de gira? Si es así, ¿con quién?

Por ahora mis dos únicos focos reales son SOTO y SoA. Tener a SOTO en la misma discográfica que SoA me ayuda a mantener un equilibrio y foco sobre lo que va pasando. Acabamos de anunciar el tour de Origami para UK y Europa en septiembre. El resto del mundo tiene que permitirnos seguir el ritmo para poder girar por América del Sur y demás, y así agrandar los planes de gira. El año que viene habrá un nuevo disco y tour de SoA.

En tu nuevo álbum podemos escuchar a Jorge Salán tocando la guitarra. Personalmente, creo que puede ser el mejor guitarra de hard rock / metal de España. ¿Cómo se produjo la colaboración?

Creo que puedes dar un paso más y quitar “de España” de esa ecuación. ¡Es el mejor! Jorge y yo nos conocimos cuando aún era bastante joven. Me recordaba mucho a mí mismo cuando también era joven, muy persistente, muy ambicioso y temerario al presentarse al mundo. Nos hicimos amigos de manera instantánea cuando me invitó a cantar un tema en uno de sus discos en solitario, y luego se convirtió en mi guitarrista para la JSS band. Cuando planeé hacer una banda que simplemente usase mi nombre, él fue la única opción para la guitarra de esta nueva aventura.

La banda tiene tu nombre, SOTO. ¿Es un álbum solista o podemos considerarlo una banda como tal?

Es una BANDA. Cualquier cosa bajo el nombre Jeff Scott Soto es solista. Cualquier cosa bajo el nombre SOTO debería ser visto como Van Halen, Dokken o Winger… una banda que simplemente tiene el nombre de uno de sus miembros.

¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de composición?

Los chicos escribieron y grabaron sus temas como entidades completas sin voces ni melodías, me las pasaron y las coloreé con letras y melodías. Esta ha sido la forma de trabajar en cada álbum y nos funciona bien.

Estás considerado por muchos como el mejor cantante de rock. ¿Estás de acuerdo? ¿Qué otros cantantes pondrías en el podio?

Ciertamente no me consider uno de los mejores o el mejor, tan solo me veo como alguien que trabaja mucho por todo y celebra el amor por la música. Los que merecen ese título son Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry y Sam Cooke. No son exactamente metaleros pero son los que me hicieron vibrar.

Esta puede ser difícil. De toda tu carrera, ¿Qué canción crees que te define mejor?

Tienes razón, no hay un solo tema que me defina. Se requiere de  10 a 15 canciones que he hecho para definirme porque no hay una que muestre quien soy en un contexto de 3 o 4 minutos. Honestamente no sé si alguna vez habrá un tema que me define, y veo eso como algo positivo, la verdad.

Más allá de las bandas con las que has tocado, si pudieses girar con otras tres bandas (sin importar si están en activo o no), ¿qué tres escogerías?

Queen, Van Halen y Styx… esas son las únicas tres de las que me sé todas las letras sin necesidad de ayuda, ja ja.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your time. What are you into, now?

I’m into promoting the new SOTO album and recording the new Sons Of Apollo album, every day is filled with a wonderful energy and excitement!

Origami is to be released. What can you tell us about it?

It is an album of great music, there is not much more to say about it really…we poured our hearts into making the best album we could, as any artist would, and succeeded, now we sit back and see if the rest of the world comes to the table!

You have worked with so many bands and musicians in different styles… for example, we have neo classical heavy metal with Yngwie or Axel Rudi Pell, AOR with W.E.T. or progressive metal with sons of Apollo. What’s left for you to do? Maybe sing some black metal?

Ha, no Black Metal for me, I have a limit to where I wanna tap into haha. To be honest, I just love so much and so many genres of Rock Music, I am lucky that my influences allow me to expand on my own challenges as a singer and artist. But more important, I am lucky to have a great fan base who allow me to attempt so many facets of my career for the past 3 decades.

Of all the music styles you have sang, which one is your favorite? Which one suits better your voice?

I don’t have a favorite, I have too many sides that I enjoy doing as much as the last which is why I continue to tackle them all, they keep me from getting bored I guess. I used to be criticized for not being focused on one genre, now I am celebrated that I tackled so many, this is the kind of artist I strived to be!

Would you work again with people like, for example, Axel Rudi Pell or Yngwie Malmsteen? Or those doors are closed?

I NEVER close doors with anyone I work with, those 2 are so important in the development of my life and career, I would welcome the chance to do things with both. My answers to that have changed throughout my life and career but where I am now, I have nothing but love and respect to those who trusted me to front their careers so its something I would always consider.

You have a new album, and these last 2 years have been quite productive for you. Are there any plans of touring? If so, with who?

At the moment, my only 2 real focuses are SoA and SOTO, having SOTO on the same label as Sons truly helps me keep the balance and focus of things going on. We just announced the Origami UK/Europe tour for Sept. The rest of the world needs to catch up to the levels of us being able to tour South America and Europe so we can add more to our regional planning. Next year, there will be a new SoA album and tour.

In your new album we can hear Jorge Salan playing guitar. Personally, I think he might the best hard rock/metal Spanish guitar. How has this collaboration arrived?

I believe you can go the next step further and remove the word ‘Spanish’ from that equation, he is the best period! Jorge and I met when he was still quite young, he reminded me a lot of me when I was young, very persistent, very ambitious and fearless in introducing himself to the world. We became instant friends when he invited me to sing a song on one of his solo albums, then he became my guitarist for the JSS band. When I planned a new band that simply uses my last name, he was the only choice to represent this new venture on guitar!

The band has your name, SOTO. Is it a solo album or can we consider it a proper band?

It is a BAND, anything under Jeff Scott Soto is solo stuff, anything under SOTO should be seen as Van Halen, Dokken or Winger…a band that just happens to have one of the band members names as the band name.

So how has the composing process been?

The guys write and record their songs as complete entities with no vocals or melodies, I get them and color them up with lyrics and melodies, this has been the way for every album and it works well for us!

You’re considered by many the best rock singer. Do you agree? Which other singers would be in the podium?

I certainly don’t consider myself one of or the best, I only see myself as someone who works very hard for everything and still celebrate my love for music. The ones who deserve that title are Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry and Sam Cooke, not exactly Metal guys but the ones that made me tick!

This one might be difficult. Of all your career, which songs defines you better?

You’re right, there is no one song that defines me, it takes about 10-15 songs I have done to define me because there is no single one that shows who I am in the context of 3-4 min. I honestly don’t know if there ever will be just one song to define me, I see that as a good thing I guess.

Besides the bands you have played with, if you could tour with 3 other bands (no matter if active or not), which 3 bands would you choose?

Queen, Van Halen and Styx… those 3 are the only ones I know all the lyrics without needing an auto cue hahaha
