Entrevista a Johan Fahlberg, vocalista de Jaded Heart: ‘La diversidad en las canciones hace de Jaded Heart lo que es’

Hola, Johan. Antes de nada, muchísimas gracias por dedicar este rato a responder unas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Qué tal te va?

¡Hola! Gracias por preguntar. La verdad es que estoy muy bien. Es verano y lo aprovecho para pasarlo en mi casa de veraneo.

Guilty by Design (2016) es el doceavo disco de estudio en la historia de Jaded Heart, y el sexto contigo en a la voz. Eso son más de 10 años al frente de la banda. ¿Qué se siente? ¿Qué esperabas cuando entraste en el grupo? ¿Y como ha sido si miramos en perspectiva?

Hace unos 12 años desde que empecé a cantar en Jaded Heart y ha sido una aventura estupenda y un periodo magnífico. Era, a la vez, un reto y la oportunidad de entrar en una banda estable, y creo que todos juntos hemos hecho el progreso natural que debíamos hacer.

No es fácil reemplazar a alguien como Michael Bormann, especialmente si es, además, uno de los miembros fundadores de Jaded Heart. Aunque ya estás en la banda desde hace tiempo, ¿qué sensación tenías ante la responsabilidad de reemplazarlo? ¿Crees que algunos de los fans más veteranos aún te tratan como «el nuevo»?

Cuando conocí a los chicos me dijeron que buscaban otro tipo de persona y cantante. Al principio, claro, los fans dijeron que aquello sonaba diferente, pero nunca he tenido ninguna mala vibración. Siempre me han tratado de forma fantástica, incluso al principio.

¿Qué planes tiene Jaded Heart a corto y medio plazo? ¿Podemos esperar un nuevo álbum pronto?

Ahora mismo estamos en pre producción de un nuevo álbum. Tenemos un par de temas geniales que esperamos lanzar a principios de 2018.

Conocí a Jaded Heart con el álbum Helluva Time (2005). Me sorprendí mucho cuando descubrí que «Paid My Dues» era una versión de Anastasia, ¡aquello sonaba tremendo! ¿Tenéis muchas influencias alejadas del rock y heavy metal?

¡Claro! Hay muchísimos artistas geniales que no están dentro de la escena metalera. Nos inspiran todo tipo de géneros.

Alemania ha sido, sin duda, una de las cunas europeas del hard rock y heavy metal, con bandas como Scorpions, Helloween, Kreator, Rammstein y los géneros que todos ellos ayudaron a crear. También en Suecia, de donde eres, hay una escena rockera en plena forma. ¿Qué hay en el centro y norte de Europa que ayuda a que tantas bandas tan buenas salgan, sobre todo si lo comparamos con el sur?

Tocaba y componía música en la escuela y teníamos locales de ensayo en cada esquina. Tuve la oportunidad de probar y errar, y como yo tantos otros. Y también hay algo en el agua 😀

Eres muy activo en Facebook. ¿Como es de importante esta red social y la proximidad que da para con los fans? ¿Crees que ayuda al grupo no solo a estar en contacto con vuestros seguidores, sino también a ver qué caminos deberíais tomar como grupo?

¡Claro que es importante! Es la forma en la que nos comunicamos con nuestros fans, y nuestros fans son lo más importante. Sin ellos no seríamos nada.

Hace un par de años vinisteis a España a hacer una gira por locales pequeños. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes? ¿Alguno en particular?

Si sólo puedo escoger un recuerdo, escogería el show en Cangas, Pontevedra, donde toda la banda, de forma totalmente inesperada, estaba haciendo crowdsurfing. ¡Una pasada!

A finales de Agosto volveréis a España a tocar en el Ripollet Rock Festival, uno de los festivales más antiguos (¡y gratuitos!) de hard rock y heavy metal del país. Tocaréis con bandas como Loudness y Crystal Viper. ¿Qué sabes de ello? ¿Cómo surgió la oportunidad de venir? ¿Podemos esperar un concierto memorable?

Como siempre es fantástico tocar en España. La gente y los fans son tremendamente entregados, más que en otros sitios. ¡Vamos a petarlo y ofreceros nuestro mejor show!

En deportes es muy común eso de construir tu propio dream team, con deportistas de cualquier edad, país, época… ¿Cual sería tu dream band?

¿Qué cantantes son tu mayor influencia en cuanto a carrera y estilo de cantar? ¿Y qué álbumes podrías decir que son tus preferidos?

Crecí escuchando a Paul Stanley, Rob Halford, Ronnie James Dio y Bruce Dickinson. Pero por supuesto ahí están, también, Biff Byford, Geoff Tate y tantos otros. Cantantes atemporales que me gustan especialmente son David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, etc.

No puedo escoger un solo álbum, o grupo o cantante. Todos tienen su sitio y lugar especial.

¿Cual es ti álbum preferido de Jaded Heart? ¿Y tu menos preferido? ¿Por qué?

No puedo escoger. Todos son como mis bebés. Es imposible escoger el mejor.

Si tuvieras que escoger una sola canción de Jaded Heart que represente a la banda más que las otras, ¿cual sería?

No puedo. La diversidad en las canciones hace de Jaded Heart lo que es.

Si pudieras hacer un cartel con 4 grupos para girar, siendo Jaded Heart uno de los cuatro, ¿qué otras bandas escogerías?

Escogería a mis amigos de Unleashed, Eclipse, Afterskindians y Lugnet. ¡Qué caos! Hahahaha.

Hello Johan, first of all, thank you very much for dedicating some minutes to answer these questions for Science of Noise. How are you going these days?

Hello! Thanx for asking. I’m doing very well. It’s summer and I’m spending a lot of time in my summer house right now.

Guilty by Design (2016) is the twelfth studio album in Jaded Heart’s history, and the sixth with you handling the vocals. That’s more than 10 years in front of the band. How does it feel? What did you expect from your tenure with the band when you stepped in? And how has it been in retrospective so far?

It’s been about twelve years now since I’ve started to sing in Jaded Heart and it has been a fantastic adventure and an awesome time. It was a challenge and at the same time an opportunity to step into an already established band and I think we have made a natural progress together.

It’s not an easy job to replace someone as Michael Bormann, specially since he was one of the founders of Jaded Heart. Although you have been in the band for quite a while now, how did the responsibility of replacing him felt? Do you still feel that many fans from the old days treat you as “the new one”?

When I met the boys for the first time they told me they were looking for another kind of person and singer. At first, fans said it was different, a new era, but I have never got any bad vibes. They have always treated me in a fantastic way, even from the start.

What are the plans for Jaded Heart in the short to medium term future? Shall we expect a new album soonish?

We’re in pre-production of a new album at the moment. We have a couple of great songs in the pipeline that we hope to release in the early 2018.

I first came across Jaded Heart with the Helluva Time album, back in 2005. I was shocked when I found out “Paid my Dues” was an Anastasia cover, it sounds blasting! Do the band has many non-rock/metal influences?

Of course. There’s so many fantastic and great artists that’s not in the metal/hardrock scene. We are all inspired of all kind of genres.

Germany is and has been, without a doubt, one of the European strongholds of hard rock/heavy metal with bands like Scorpions, Helloween, Kreator, Rammstein and the genres they helped creating… Also in Sweden, where you come from, there is a massive and healthy rock scene. What do you think there is in central and northern Europe that helps breed such number of great bands in comparison with the south?

I could play and make music in school, we had rehearsal rooms at hand in almost every cellar at that time. I had the opportunity to trial and error as a kid. And it’s something in the water 😀

You are very active in Facebook. How important do you feel is this networking and proximity with the fans for you and the band? Do you think it helps the band and the band members not only to keep in touch with your fans, but to know which direction the band should take?

Of course it’s important. That’s the way we communicate with our fans. And our fans are the most important thing, without them we would be nothing.

Two years ago you came to Spain for quite a extensive tour in some small venues. What do you remember about it? Any favorite memories? Any shocking story?

If I have to pick only one memory, that was a show in Cangas, Pontevedra, when the whole band, totally unexpectedly, were crowd surfing. Great memory.

Next month you will be back in Spain to play in Ripollet Rock Festival, one of the oldest (and free!) festivals of classic hard rock and metal in Spain, along with bands like Loudness and Crystal Viper. What do you know about it? How did the opportunity to be part in the line up of this year came from? What should we expect from your show?

As always it’s fantastic and awesome to play in Spain. The crowd and fans are so devoted like nowhere else.
We’re gonna come down to you and give our best show ever!

Which singers have influenced you the most in your career and singing style? And which bands and albums do you hold the dearest?

I grew up listening to Paul Stanley, Rob Halford, Ronnie James Dio and Bruce Dickinson. But there is of course Biff Byford, Geoff Tate and so on. All time great singers with an emphasis I like are David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Beyonce, etc. I can’t pick just some singers, bands or albums, they’re all have the special place in time.

Which is your Jaded Heart favorite album? And your least favorite? Why?

I can’t say. All of them are like babies. Impossible to pick the best.

If you had to choose a single Jaded Heart song that you think it represents the band more than any other one, which one would it be?

I can’t. The diversity of songs makes Jaded Heart what it is.

If you could put up a tour line up with four bands, being Jaded Heart one of them, which bands would you choose and why?

That would be my close friends in Unleashed, Eclipse, Afterskindians and Lugnet. What a mayhem. Hahaha.
