Omnium Gatherum son una de las grandes bandas del fértil y exhuberante panorama death metal finlandés. Después de su exitoso Grey Heavens, publicado el año pasado, y su gira junto a Amon Amarth y Dark Tranquillity, los finlandeses volverán a visitar nuestras salas en pocas semanas como cabezas de cartel. De todo ello y mucho más hablamos con su vocalista Jukka Pelkonen.
SoN: ¡Hola Jukka! Antes que nada, muchas gracias por dedicar algo de tiempo a responder a las preguntas de Science of Noise. ¿Cómo estás?
Hola. Estoy muy bien, gracias. ¡Listo para saltar de nuevo a la carretera!
SoN: Ya ha pasado un año y medio desde que publicásteis Grey Heavens, un álbum que me gusta mucho y que creo que ha sido aclamado universalmente. Con la perspectiva del tiempo, ¿con qué aspectos estás más y menos contento del resultado?
¿Ya ha pasado un año y medio? El tiempo realmente vuela. Si miro atrás debo decir que estoy bastante satisfecho aún con el disco. Las canciones son buenas y han demostrado que pueden aguantar bien el paso del tiempo. La producción es sólida y el camino dramático por el que transcurre el disco se mantiene firme. Hemos estado girando desde que salió y las canciones de Grey Heavens funcionan muy bien en directo. Personalmente, hubiera añadido más contraste en lo referente a las variaciones entre temas más oscuros y más claros, pero a parte de esto, no puede decirte qué cambiaría o con qué no estoy satisfecho. En mi opinión el disco se aguanta orgullosamente.
SoN: Creo que Grey Heavens es un poco más directo que Beyond o New World Shadows, dos álbumes que quizás exploraron el lado más progresivo y espacioso de vuestra música. También noto algo de black metal y de post rock / shoegaze en este último disco. ¿Tenéis planes ya para vuestro próximo trabajo? ¿Qué dirección crees que va a tomar?
Es cierto. Grey Heavens es más «directo», de una forma u otra, que sus predecesores. El disco contiene la marca de la casa de Omnium Gatherum, consistente en melodías muy ricas mezcladas con la brutalidad de las voces. Y le damos una nueva perspectiva tal y como cualquier nuevo buen disco debería hacer para evolucionar el sonido de la banda. Quisimos combinar la amplitud épica de Beyond y New World Shadows con el death metal más veloz que puedes encontrar en The Redshift por ejemplo. También hay algunos elementos black en la mezcla. Esto lo hacemos para beneficio de las canciones y del álbum en general, así que se trata de un proceso bien planificado. Ya estamos produciendo el nuevo disco, grabando demos de las nuevas canciones y preparándonos por las grabaciones en estudio que van a empezar a principios del año que viene. La dirección es un continuo respecto a los últimos álbumes. Canciones verdaderamente Omnium Gatherum con un toque fresco y original.
SoN: La última vez que os vimos en España fué hace unos meses junto a Amon Amarth y Dark Tranquillity. Imagino que un cartel de death metal melódico no puede ser mucho mejor que eso. ¿Cómo os llegó la oportunidad de formar parte de él y cómo fué la gira? ¿Tienes algun recuerdo especial de vuestros conciertos por aquí?
Si, cuando visitamos España fué con Amon Amarth y Dark Tranquillity. Fué una gira verdaderamente genial, con gente fantástica trabajando con nosotros y un público magnífico por toda Europa, y España no fué la excepción. La gira estuvo organizada por nuestros socios de Dragon Productions, que se encargan de reservar y organizar todas nuestras giras por Europa. Como he dicho, fué realmente impresionante, y creo que lo más memorable fué cuando tocamos en Málaga. No habíamos dado muchos shows en España anteriormente, así que fué bastante cool que Málaga pareciera el sitio al que uno iría de vacaciones. También recuerdo el público de cada ciudad que visitamos. En esa gira fuimos los primeros a tocar pero las salas estaban llenas a tiempo para nuestro concierto y la gente pareció disfrutar realmente de nuestras canciones. ¡Eso es siempre genial!
SoN: Os ví en Barcelona junto a Dark Tranquillity, y vuestro show fué magnífico. Y no solo disfruté sino que me sorprendí por la respuesta tan entusiasta de la gente. Si no me equivoco nunca habíais visitada antes España. ¿Os sorprendió la reacción de la gente?
Gracias. La respuesta en Barcelona fué fabulosa. En realidad ésta no fué la primera vez que visitamos España, ya que en 2007 hicimos un mini-tour junto a Caliban por España y Portugal. Pero nos ha costado diez años volver, y estoy realmente contento de haberlo hecho, ya que la atmósfera en todas las ciudades españolas fué increíble, con una muy buena interacción entre el público y la banda. Y ésta es siempre la mejor situación posible.
SoN: Este pasado verano también tocásteis en el festival Leyendas del Rock. ¿Cómo fué vuestra experiencia? ¿Pudistéis quedaros un tiempo y ver otras bandas y el ambiente?
Fué un buen concierto. Buena cantidad de gente y una bonita energía. ¿Qué más se puede pedir? El festival en sí estuvo bien y fué bastante cálido para un evento de ese tamaño, ya que normalmente los festivales grandes son fríos y caóticos. Ahí también pasaban muchas cosas pero todo el mundo de la organización hizo bien su trabajo. Eso es realmente importante para nosotros, porque también damos al 100%. Por desgracia, no tuve tiempo de ver ninguna otra banda.
SoN: Ahora volveréis de nuevo, y esta vez como cabezas de cartel, junto a Skälmöld y Stam1na. ¿Qué podemos esperar de esta gira y de ambos teloneros? ¿Por qué escogistéis el nombre «The Arctic Circle Alliance – Part I». No es para nada inusual que tres bandas escandinavas giren juntas, ¿no? 😀 ¿Quiere esto decir que va a haber una «part ii» en breve?
Es excelente volver siendo cabezas de cartel para vosotros, chicos. Tenemos tres fantásticas bandas para obsequiaros con una noche de metal para recordar. Te puedo garantizar que las tres vamos a ofrecer un pedazo de concierto, ya que todas las bandas son agresivas y tienen experiencia, así que si alguien quiere ver un show de metal escandinavo que le vuele la cabeza, estos conciertos son la respuesta. El título de la gira se les ocurrió a los chicos de Dragon y pensamos que era un buen nombre en general. No hay ninguna razón especial tras ello, era lo suficientemente pegadizo para tomarlo. Y sí, habrá una segunda parte. Bastante pronto… 🙂
SoN: Este otoño hay un montón de grandes conciertos en Madrid y en Barcelona (aunque no hay mucho death metal melódico, es verdad). ¿Qué les dirías a los fans que aún no se han decidido a que vengan a vuestro concierto?
Si es death metal melódico de calidad lo que buscan, no hay dos opciones posibles. ¡Ven al show y disfruta! La respuesta anterior contiene todas las razones. 🙂
SoN: ¿Cuáles son los planes de Omnium Gatherum para 2018?
Vamos a empezar a grabar el nuevo disco, y seguiremos girando. ¡Así que todo bien!
SoN: Finlandia se ha convertido en la nueva Suecia como meca del death metal melódico, con un montón de bandas fantásticas como vosotros mismos, Insomnium, Wolfheart (y todas las bandas pasadas de Tuomas Saukkonen), Ghost Brigade, Swallow the Sun, Mors Principium Est y muchas más. Es innegable que todas ellas tienen una personalidad claramente distinta, pero a la vez, hay algo común en vuestro sonido. ¿Cómo describirías esta especie de lugar común? ¿Que créeis que ocurre en Finlandia para que sea un campo tan fértil para este tipo de música?
Es cierto que hay muchas bandas de death metal en Finlandia, tanto profesionales como en el underground. Realmente no sé lo que tiene este país para inspirar a la gente a escribir este tipo de música. Quizás es una combinación de la atmosfera, el sentimiento del cambio de estaciones o el amor generalizado por la música. ¡O quizás hay algo en el agua! 😉 Creo que cada banda afecta a las otras bandas de una forma u otra, y esto a lo mejor podría explicar las similitudes que existen entre nosotros, no lo sé. Parece que es un buen momento para todos nosotros para crear este tipo de música, así que ocurre así. Cualquier razón que te explique sería pura especulación, pero creo que es maravilloso que tantas bandas de calidad estén haciendo música y girando.
SoN: Siempre he pensado que es curioso que Markus, vuestro guitarrista, lo sea a su vez de Insomnium, siendo como es el único miembro fundador que queda en Omnium Gatherum. ¿Cómo llegó a tocar con ellos? ¿Es fácil compaginar el trabajo con ambas bandas? Esto da a entender que la escena finlandesa es bastante cercana, ¿es cierto?
En 2011 Insomnium necesitaban un guitarrista porque el que tenían hasta entonces se fué, y pensaron que Markus era la mejor opción para unirse a la banda ya que se conocían bien, y anteriormente ya había tocado con ellos de forma ocasional. La química era buena, así que eventualmente se convirtió en un miembro permanente. Creo que es algo positivo que se uniera a la banda, ya que a Markus le gusta mucho el estilo de vida metalero y ambas bandas somos muy activas. En la escena metalera finlandesa las bandas se suelen llevar bien. De hecho, creo que en la escena metalera en general las bandas se suelen llevar bien.
SoN: ¿Hay alguna banda finlandesa que es probable que no conozcamos y que te gustaría recomendar?
El mejor camino en mi opinión es ir a internet y buscarlo por ti mismo. Pero creo que Mörbid Vomit está bastante bien si te gusta el brutal death metal. También me gusta Humavoid aunque no es solo death metal, sino una combinación de estilos.
SoN: En vuestro caso (y simplificando), los toques distintivos de vuestra particular versión del death metal melódico sean probablemente los lados progresivo y AOR, de manera que creo que la versión que hicistéis de Rush hace unos años es muy descriptiva y os encaja muy bien, ya que si lo piensas bien vuestra música podría ser una especie de Rush melancólico y deathmetalizado. ¿Estás de acuerdo? ¿Por qué escogistéis versionar esa canción precisamente? ¿Hay alguna otra canción (de cualquier banda) que habéis pensado en versionar?
Es una canción que queríamos hacer desde hacía tiempo y la versión resultante quedó bastante bien. Yo no llamaría a nuestra música Rush deathmetalizado porque el estilo de Omnium Gatherum es el resultado de años de trabajo y experimentación. Hay algunos momentos AOR pero creo que el resultado final va mucho más allá. Es un hecho que, principalmente, somos una banda de death metal melódico. Las influencias que tenemos se pueden oir en la música porque nosotros queremos construir un sonido único e impulsar el género adelante. Haremos más versiones en el futuro, y esta vez será de un género totalmente distinto a lo que hace Rush. No te voy a contar más sobre ello pero la canción es otra de las que nos ha inspirado en nuestra carrera.
SoN: Hablando de algo totalmente no relacionado con la música, aquí siempre oímos que el sistema educativo en Finlandia es el mejor de Europa. ¿Qué opinas sobre ello? ¿Qué crees tiene la educación finlandesa de especial?
El sistema educativo finlandés es el producto de parámetros bien pensados y una buena planificación de cara al futuro. No sé si es la mejor de Europa, pero ha obtenido buenos resultados. Creo que la apertura de mente con la que se encaró la reforma de las diversas prácticas dentro del sistema educativo es una de las razones por las cuales ha resultado bien. Ahora mismo hay un proceso de digitalización en las escuelas, lo que creo que es algo generalmente positivo, aunque personalmente creo que lo ideal es la combinación entre las prácticas del pasado, aún necesarias, con las innovaciones modernas, de manera que se pueda abarcar tanto la tradición como las nuevas formas de pensar.
SoN: Si tuvieras que escoger una sola canción para introducir la banda a gente que no os conoce, ¿cuál sería?
La canción sería «Frontiers», procedente de Grey Heavens, ya que contiene todos los elementos que definen a Omnium Gatherum.
SoN: Imagina que puedes montar un cartel de gira con las cuatro bandas que quisieras, siendo Omnium Gatherum una de ellas. ¿Cuáles escogerías y por qué?
Ok, el cartel sería: Omnium Gatherum, Megadeth, Carcass, Soilwork.
¿Y por qué? Bueno, esta combinación sería super interesante porque ofrecería a la gente buen metal en un paquete único. Sería genial ver como este cartel se intensifica a lo largo de un periodo de cuatro semanas en la carretera, por ejemplo. Cada una de las bandas es profesional y tendría que darlo todo cada noche para ser capaz de «competir» con las otras bandas. ¡Sería genial!

Hello. I’m good thank you. Ready to hit the road again!
SoN: It has already been a year and a half since you released Grey Heavens, an album that I like a lot and that I think has been unanimously acclaimed. With the perspective of time, what are you most and least satisfied about that album?
Has it already been year and a half? Time sure does fly. If I now look back I must say I’m pretty satisfied with the album still. The songs are strong and have proven to stand the time. The production is solid and the course of drama within the album holds steady. We have also been touring since the release and the songs from ‘Grey Heavens’ also work live very well. I personally would have added more contrast to the album concerning the variation of darker and lighter themes.
Other than that I can’t say what I would change or be dissatisfied with. The album stands proudly in my opinion.
SoN: I think Grey Heavens is a bit more direct than Beyond and New World Shadows, two albums that explored the most progressive and spacious side of your music. Also, I notice some bits of black metal and post rock / shoegaze in your last album. Do you already have plans for a new record? Which direction do you think it is going to take?
That is true. ‘Grey Heavens’ is more «direct» in a sense compared to it’s predecessors. The album does contain the OG trademark of rich melodies mixed with the brutality of the vocals. It gives this mix a new perspective like any good new album should do for the band’s sound. We wanted to combine the epic vastness of ‘Beyond’ and ‘New world shadows’ with the fast paced death metal you can find in ‘The Redshift’ for example. There are some «blackish» elements also in the mix. This is done still for the benefit of the songs and the album in whole. It is a well planned process. We are already producing the new album. Doing demos of the new songs and preparing for recordings that start early next year. The direction is a continuum to the previous albums. True OG songs with a fresh and original touch.
SoN: Last time we saw you in Spain was a few months ago along with Amon Amarth and Dark Tranquillity. I guess a melodic death metal tour can’t get much better than this. How did you get the opportunity to be part of it and how did it go? Do you have particular memories about the shows here?
Yes it was with AA and DT when we visited Spain. It was truly a great tour with awesome people working with us and magnificent crowds around Europe and Spain was no exception. For us the tour was organized by our partners at Dragon productions. They book all our tours in Europe etc. Like I said the tour was really amazing indeed. I think the most memorable thing was when we played in Malaga. We haven’t been playing so many shows in Spain before so it was kinda cool that Malaga looked like a place one would go on a vacation. Also I remember the crowds in every city we visited. On that tour we were the first to play in that roster and the places were full of people in time for our show and they really seemed to enjoy our songs. That is always awesome!
SoN: I saw you in Barcelona with Dark Tranquillity, and your show was truly great. Not only I enjoyed it but I was surprised by the enthusiastic response of the people. If I am not mistaken you never visited Spain before. Were you surprised by how the audience received you?
Thank you. The response was awesome in Barcelona. Actually this was not the first time in Spain. Back in 2007 we did a mini-tour with Caliban in Spain and Portugal. Still it took ten years for us to get back. Im truly glad we did come back because the atmosphere in the show in every city in Spain was amazing. Really good interaction with the crowd and the band. This is always the best possible situation.
SoN: This summer you were also playing in the Leyendas del Rock Festival. How was your experience in the festival? Could you stay and see other bands and a bit of the ambience?
It was a good show. Nice amount of people and a good hype going on. What more one can ask. The festival itself was nice and «warm hearted» for a big festival. Usually festival in that size are super hectic and cold. There was a lot happening but everyone of the organizers did their job well. That is really important for us because we deliver 100% also. Unfortunately I had no time to see other bands.
SoN: Now you are coming again, this time as a headliners and with the support of Skälmöld and Stam1na. What can we exepect from that tour and the opening bands? Why did you choose the moniker «The Arctic Circle Alliance – Part I»? I mean, it is not unusual that three scandinavian bands come together 😀 Does it mean that you will be having a «Part II» soon?
It is excellent to come back to headband for you guys! We have three excellent bands to treat you with a metal night to remember. You can be guaranteed all the acts are going to deliver one hellowa show. Each band is aggressive and seasoned so if one wants to see a mind-blowing set of Scandinavian metal, these shows are the answer. The title for the tour was come up by guys at Dragon and we thought it was a good name in general. No special reasons behind it. It was catchy enough to go with. And yes, there will be a pt2. Pretty soon.. 🙂
SoN: There are many great concerts this autumn in Barcelona and Madrid (even though there is not a lot of melodeath, this is also true). What would you tell the undecided fans to convince them about coming to your show?
Well, if it is quality melodeath one wants, then there is no two ways about it! Come to the show and enjoy! The previous answer contains all the reasons why! 🙂
SoN: What are then the plans for Omnium Gatherum in 2018?
We are starting to record a new album. Then there is also more touring. Good shit!
SoN: Finland has become the new Sweden as the mecca of melodic death metal, with plenty of great bands like yourselves, Insomnium, Wolfheart (and all other past bands from Tuomas Saukkonen), Ghost Brigade, Swallow the Sun, Mors Principium Est and many more. It is undeniable that all of them have a clearly distinct personality but, at the same time, there is something in your sound that brings you all together. How would you describe this sort of common ground? What do you think happens in Finland to be such fertile ground for this type of music?
There are indeed a lot of DM bands in Finland. Both professional and in the underground. I really don’t know why is it that this country inspires people to write this kind of music. It may be the combination of atmosphere, the feeling of changing seasons and the overall love for music. Or maybe there is something in our water.;) I think each band affects another band in a way or another so that could maybe explain the similarities present. I dunno. This seems to be a good time for us here to create this kind of music so it happens. Every reason for this kind of thing is pure speculation. I think it is wonderful that so many quality bands are making music and touring as well.
SoN: I always thought that it was curious that your guitar player Markus doubles in Insomnium, being as he is the sole founding member of Omnium Gatherum. How did he get to play there? Can he manage his presence in both bands well? Are the bands in the finnish scene very close?
Back in 2011 Insomnium needed a guitarst because they were parting ways with their guitarist at the time. The guys thought Markus was the best choice for them to join the band and he knew those guys well also. He had been doing some fill-ins for them as a guitarist before and their chemistry was right so eventually he became a full member. I think it was a good thing he joined the band because Markus likes this metal lifestyle a lot and both bands are very active. In finnish metal scene the bands usually get along well. I think in metal scene in general bands get along well.
SoN: Are there any finnish bands that we might not know outside your country yet that you think are worth reccommending?
The best way for my opinion is to go online and check for yourself. But I think Mörbid Vomit is quite good if you like brutal DM. Also Humavoid is good although it is not DM but a combination of styles.
SoN: In your case, the distinctive touches of your brand of melodic death metal are probably the progressive and the AOR side, in a way that I think the cover you did of Rush is very descriptive of it and suits you very well, since thinking about it you could be some sort of deathmetallized melancholic Rush. Do you agree? Why did you choose to cover that song? Is there any other song (by any band) you thought about covering?
It was a song we’d wanted to do for awhile and the version turned out quite nice. I wouldn’t call our music deathmetallized Rush because OG’s style is a result of years of hard work and experimenting. There are some AOR moments in our music but I think the whole of the thing is much more. It is a fact that mainly we are a melodic death metal band. The influences we have can be heard in the music because we want to make our sound uniquee and push the DM genre forward. We are going to do cover songs in the future too. This time it will be from a totally different genre than that which Rush is in. I’m not going to tell you anymore but the song is also one of those that has inspired us.
SoN: Talking about something totally unrelated to music, we always hear that the finnish education is the best in Europe. What do you think about it? What do you think is specially good about the schooling system in your country?
The Finnish education system is a product of well thought parameters and good planning for the future. It beeing the best in Europe that I don’t know but it has yielded good results. I think the open mindedness of reforming the different practices within the schooling system is one of the reasons why it is good. At the moment there is a lot of digitalization going on in schools which is mostly good thing. I personally think the best way is to combine the past practices still needed with modern innovations to be able to sustain both the tradition and the new ways of thinking.
SoN: If you had to choose a single song to introduce the band to people that don’t know you, which one would it be?
The song would be ‘Frontiers’ from ‘Grey Heavens’. It contains all the elements that are pure OG.
SoN: Imagine that you can put up a tour line up with any four bands you wanted, being Omnium Gatherum one of them. Which ones would you choose and why?
Ok. The line up would be:
Omnium Gatherum
Megadeth
Carcass
Soilwork
And why? Well this combination would be super interesting because it would offer the crowd good metal in an unique paggage. Would also be awesome to see how this line up intensify during a four week touring period for example. Each of the bands are pro and would have to give them all each night to be able to «compete» with the other bands. That would be great!

Siempre me ha encantado escribir y siempre me ha encantado el rock, el metal y muchos más estilos. De hecho, me gustan tantos estilos y tantas bandas que he llegado a pensar que he perdido completamente el criterio, pero es que hay tanta buena música ahí fuera que es imposible no seguirse sorprendiendo día a día.
