De ser solo una idea en la fantasiosa cabeza de Mario Lochert hasta hoy han pasado solamente cuatro años, en los que Serious Black ha publicado hasta tres álbumes y se ha convertido en una de las bandas más prometedoras del panorama power metal europeo. Con «Magic«, su último disco, aún caliente, los «alemanes» se preparan para su primera gira europea como cabezas de cartel. Los veremos aquí en pocos días junto a Herman Frank, Stormhammer y My Own Ghost. Siempre dá gusto hablar con alguién que no tiene miedo de demostrar que le apasiona lo que hace como si fuera un niño, y a Mario Lochert y Dominik Sebastian, bajista y guitarrista de esta banda, se les nota la pasión a la legua. SoN: ¡Hola Mario! ¡Hola Dominik! Muchas gracias por dedicar un tiempo a responder las preguntas para Science of Noise. Vuestro nuevo disco se acaba de publicar ahora mismo y os vais a lanzar a la carretera en tan solo unas semanas, así que imagino que debéis estar bastante ocupados estos días. ¿Cómo va todo?
Dominik Sebastian: Pues sí, la verdad es que hemos estado ocupados hasta los topes, ¡y aún lo estamos! ¡Estamos ultimando las preparaciones para los shows más visuales que Serious Black nunca ha dado hasta ahora!
Mario Lochert: Sí, ahora mismo estamos realmente ocupados, organizando la gira, el merchandising, los ensayos y todo eso. Pero será un gran tour, estoy seguro. Y estoy realmente impaciente por empezar. Hemos pensado en tantas cosas, detalles, etc…
SoN: ¿Qué tenemos que esperar de «Magic» en comparación con vuestros discos anteriores? ¿Qué es lo que ha cambiado y qué es lo que se ha mantenido igual? ¿Habrá una canción tan pegadiza como «Castor Skies»? (esto es difícil)
ML: Pues para mí «Serious Black Magic» es más pegadiza que «Castor Skies». Todas las canciones de este disco son temas fantásticos de power metal. Son fuertes, tienen estribillos y momentos pegadizos, grandes melodías y riffs molones… ¡así que todo el mundo debería escucharlo!
SoN: Según vuestra biografía, «todo pasó en un soleado 23 de agosto en España, cuando Roland Grapow y Mario Lochert tuvieron una conversación en el backstage junto a una bebida refrescante.». Si busco un posible 23 de agosto en el que pudiera haber pasado esto, encuentro que el momento debió ser el 23 de agosto de 2013, el día que Masterplan tocaron en el Ripollet Rock. ¿Es ese el día y el lugar? ¿Qué pasó ese día y por qué pasó exactamente entonces?
ML: Ese día fué la primera vez que hablamos sobre los planes de fundar una banda como ésta. Era mi cumpleaños y hablamos sobre lo que queríamos hacer en el futuro… lo que pasó después… de golpe le expliqué una idea que había tenido unos años atrás, y ese fué el principio de Serious Black. Dos semanas después estábamos en un estudio en Munich, ¡y ahora ya han pasado cuatro años! Estoy muy contento y orgulloso.
SoN: ¡Así que tienes que compartir tu pastel de cumpleaños con toda la banda! Cuando le hiciste esa propuesta a Roland hace tan solo cuatro años, ¿qué es lo que tenías en mente para la banda? ¿Cómo se compara eso con lo que habéis conseguido hasta hoy?
ML: (risas) Sí, me hice un regalo a mí mismo que solo me dá que trabajo, trabajo y más trabajo! (risas) Amo a la banda, y el 23 de Agosto es uno de los tres días al año en los que no quiero tener nada que hacer. Hace cuatro años nadie podía esperar que habríamos publicado en tan poco tiempo tres álbumes que hayan entrado en las listas de ventas en varios países. Creo que vamos por el buen camino y eso equilibra esos momentos en los que te sientes un poco quemado. Es muy divertido tocar y trabajar con mis compañeros de banda.
SoN: Empezaste la banda con Roland Grapow (ex-Helloween, ahora en Masterplan), pero no pasó mucho tiempo hasta que se fué. Al ser el músico con un perfil más alto de vuestra formación… ¿hubo un antes y un después de su marcha? ¿Tuviste miedo de que sin él no llegariais tan lejos?
ML: Bien, Roland dejó la banda porque nunca pensamos que Serious Black pudiera crecer tanto y tan rápido. Queríamos salir de gira pero Roland no puede combinar eso con Masterplan y su vida personal, y nosotros realmente queríamos tocar tanto como fuera posible. Es un sueño hecho realidad. Y con Roland seguimos siendo buenos amigos, claro. Hablo con él por teléfono algunas veces y nos llevamos muy bien.
SoN: En solo cuatro años ya habéis publicado tres discos, uno por año desde 2015. ¡Esto es bastante impresionante! ¿Que creéis que ocurre en las dinámicas de la banda que genera tanta capacidad creativa? ¿Os resulta fácil escribir canciones en Serious Black?
DS: Antes que nada, solemos trabajar en canciones e ideas del pasado. Además, todos estamos involucrados en el proceso de composición por ahora, y más o menos todos aportamos ideas, riffs, canciones… Así que no es una sola persona la que tiene que componerlo todo. A excepción de las letras.
ML: No diría que es fácil pero la banda aún no ha llegado a su zénit. Cuando componemos lo pasamos bien, tenemos pasión y amor por nuestras canciones y nos gusta trabajar juntos. Creo que esto es lo que hace que hayamos sido capaces de publicar estos tres discos tan seguidos.
SoN: Serious Black es una banda bastante nueva, pero todos sus músicos tienen gran experiencia en la escena metalera. Explicadnos un poco lo que MArio Lochert y Dominik Sebastian hasn estado haciendo antes de meteros en esta banda, y en qué otros grupos estáis involucrados a día de hoy.
DS: Yo sigo formando parte de Edenbridge y Thirdmoon, aunque Thirdmoon está congelado desde hace siglos… sencillamente no hay tiempo para todo.
ML: En realidad yo era un prostituto que solía vender mi cuerpo a mujeres de avanzada edad por un puñado de euros… y entonces apareció Serious Black y mi vida cambió por completo (risas). No, yo tocaba por todo el mundo con Emergency Gate y Visions of Atlantis. Trabajé en el estudio produciendo y grabando discos, y me encargué de contratar muchas giras, festivales y todo eso. Así que, realmente, en lo referente al trabajo, nada ha cambiad demasiado.
SoN: Aunque os conocemos como una banda alemana, solo tú, Mario, y el batería Alex Holzwarth sois alemanes. Tenéis chicos de Grecia, Suecia, Austria y la República Checa. ¿Fué esa la idea desde un primer momento o sencillamente ha ocurrido así? ¿Cómo soléis trabajar para las grabaciones y los ensayos?
ML: Cuando componemos nos comunicamos mucho vía skype, whatsapp, wetransfer, etc… pero los arreglos, las grabaciones y parte de la composición la hacemos juntos en la misma habitación. Los vuelos ya no son caros, así que funciona bastante bien así.
DS: Solo ensayamos justo antes de los conciertos o las giras. Si es un concierto aislado normalmente el día antes, a veces ni tan siquiera eso (risas). Si se trata de una gira nos encontramos más o menos una semana antes de meternos en el bus.
SoN: Serious Black no solo es una banda concebida en España, sino que después de Alemania parece ser el país en el que habéis tocado más, ¿es cierto? ¿Tenéis una respuesta especialmente entusiasta aquí? ¿Qué es lo que os gusta de nuestro país, tanto por parte de los fans como fuera de vuestro trabajo como músicos?
DS: Puedes perfectamente estar en lo cierto. Para mí, sencillamente pasó así, y me encanta tocar aquí. ¡Siempre es como una fiesta! También a nivel personal me encanta venir de vacaciones aquí… ¡si es que hay tiempo para vacaciones!
ML: Estoy de acuerdo con Dominik. Me gusta España y he venido a España incontables veces. Siempre es especial venir a este bonito país.
SoN: En septiembre vais a empezar vuestra mayor gira como cabezas de cartel, y por supuesto vais a volver a España. Hace un par de años vinistéis un par de veces, primero como teloneros de Hammerfall junto a Orden Ogan y la otra abriendo para Gamma Ray. ¿Qué recordáis de cada uno de estos tours y cómo valoráis el hecho de haber girado con bandas tan establecidas y queridas en los primeros días de Serious Black? ¿Cómo fué la respuesta de los fans entonces?
DS: Sencillamente fué lo mejor que nos podía haber pasado. ¡Nos ayudó inmensamente a acercarnos donde estamos ahora mismo!
ML: La respuesta de la gente fué genial. Es difícil encontrar palabras porque fué impresionante ver como los fans españoles reaccionaron ante nuestra música… estamos muy felices de volver en solo unos días.
SoN: También estuvistéis en el Leyendas del Rock hace muy poco. ¿Cómo fué? ¿Cómo comparais este festival con otros en otros países?
DS: Por desgracia no tuvimos nada de tiempo para respirar la esencia de este gran festival. Tan solo fuimos, nos preparamos, hicimos una sesión de firmas, tocamos nuestro set y nos fuimos. Para mí es difícil comparar, no sería justo.
ML: Creo que dimos un muy buen concierto en el Leyendas, aunque todo fué un poco estresante. Llegada, un par de horas para dormir, festival, concierto, dormir de nuevo y largo viaje de vuelta a casa. Teníamos muchas cosas que hacer con la salida del disco y todo eso, pero estuvo bien y fué mi segunda vez en este festival. Veremos como va la tercera 🙂
SoN: Este otoño las principales ciudades españolas vienen con una agenda de conciertos muy apretada, con muchas bandas. Por ello, quizás hay algunos fans del metal que aun no se han acabado de decidir a venir a vuestro concierto. ¿Qué les diríais para que no se perdieran la visita de Serious Black?
DS: Será nuestro show más explosivo y poderoso hasta ahora. Y por supuesto el cartel de gira es único. ¡Os arrepentiréis si no venís a verlo!
ML: Todos aquellos que ya nos han visto en el pasado saben que somos una muy buena banda en directo, así que estoy bastante seguro que vendrán a rockear con nosotros de nuevo. Para aquellos que no nos conocen aún… ¡daros la oportunidad de formar parte de una gran noche de heavy metal!
SoN: Vendréis acompañados de los chicos Herman Frank, My Own Ghost y Stormhammer, en lo que va a ser un cartel muy sólido de power metal festivo. ¿Qué creéis que cada una de estas bandas va aportar al tour?
ML: Para mí es un gran honor que Herman y sus chicos sean nuestro invitado especial. Ví a Herman hace mucho tiempo con Victory y con Accept. Con Rick, estuve de gira con Masterplan y conozco a Andre de Rage, así que en general creo que es un paquete impresionante, lleno de puro rock. My Own Ghost es una banda nueva muy talentosa, y estoy ansioso por verlos en directo.
SoN: Si tuviérais que escoger una sola canción de Serious Black para introducir a la banda a alguien que no os conozca, ¿cuál escogeríais y por qué?
ML: «I Seek No Other Life»!!! ¡Porque lo explica todo!
SoN: Y si pudiérais programar un cartel de gira con cuatro bandas, siendo Serious Black una de ellas, ¿cuáles serían las escogidas y por qué? (ya sé que os tienta decir Herman Frank, Stormhammer y My Own Ghost, pero intentad no hacerlo a no ser que, realmente, este sea el cartel soñado por vosotros :-D)
ML: Bon Jovi, Guns n’ Roses, Kiss.

SoN: Hello Mario! Hello Dominik! Thank you very much for dedicating some time to answer the questions of Science of Noise. Your new album has just been released and you will be hitting the road in just a few weeks, so I am guessing you have been quite busy these days. How is everything going with you and the band?
Dominik Sebastian: Indeed, we’ve been busy like hell, and still we are! The preparations are running for the most visual Serious Black shows so far!
Mario Lochert: Yes at the moment we are really busy, organizing the tour, the merchandise, the rehearsals and so on… but it’s becoming a great tour I am sure. And I am really looking forward to it… we have thought about many things, details and so on…
SoN: What are we to expect from «Magic» if we compare it with your previous efforts? What has changed and what has remained the same? Will there be a catchier song than «Castor Skies» (that’s difficult!)?
ML: For me «Serious Black Magic» is catchier than «Castor Skies». All songs on this album are really high class power metal songs. They are strong with catchy hooks, great melodies and cool riffs… so everybody go give it a spin.
SoN: According to your bio, «It all happened on a sunny 23rd of August in Spain, when Roland Grapow and Mario Lochert had a conversation backstage over a cool beverage.». If I look for a possible 23rd of August when that could have happened, I find the 23rd of August of 2013, the day Masterplan played the Ripollet Rock Festival. Is that the day and the place? What happened that day and why exactly then?
ML: This date was the first time we talked about this plans to found a band like this. On this date was my birthday and we spoke first about future plans – what happens next… suddenly I brought up an idea what I had many years ago… and this was the start of Serious Black. 2 weeks later we were in Munich in the studio. Now 4 years later … ;))))) I am very happy and proud.
SoN: If I am not mistaken, by the way, the 23rd of August is also your birthday, so you actually have to share your cake with the whole band every year! When you made that proposal to Roland just 4 years ago, what did you envision for the band, and how does it compare with what you have achieved today?
ML: hahaha well so I gave a present to myself that brought me work, work and more work ;)))
I love the band and each year on the 23rd of august is one of the 3 days a year where I don’t want to have anything to do… 4 years ago nobody expected that we would have 3 records released all with chart entries in several countries etc. I think we are on the right way and it makes even when you are sometimes burned out. It is a lot of fun to play and work with my bandmates.
SoN: Roland Grapow (ex-Helloween, currently in Masterplan) started the band with you, but he didn’t take long to leave. Assuming he was the highest profile musician in there… did anything change between before and after his departure? Were you afraid that without him you wouldn’t be able to make it as you have finally done?
ML: Well, Roland left the band because we never expacted that Serious Black would be rising this fast. We wanted to tour and Roland can’t combine this with Masterplan and his private life, because we really wanted to tour so much as possible. And this has become a dream come true. Regarding me and Roland, we are still friends all together. I sometimes speak with him in the phone and there is absolutly nothing between us.
SoN: In just 4 years you have already released 3 albums, one per year since 2015. This is quite an impressive output! What do you think is going on with the dynamics of the band that fosters such creative prommiscuity? Is it so easy to write songs in Serious Black?
DS: First of all we use to work on songs and ideas of earlier times. On top of that we are all involved in the writing process so far and everyone gives more or less input of songs, ideas, riffs, etc. So it is not up to one person who has to write them all. Except of the lyrics.
ML: I would not say it’s easy but the band is still not on the zynith! We are writing, we have fun, passion and love in our songs and we like to work together. I think this is what makes us have this output with 3 cds in a row.
SoN: Serious Black is quite a new band, but all musicians involved in it have quite a vast experience in the metal scene. Tell us a bit what have Mario Lochert and Dominik Sebastian been doing before this band, and what other bands are you involved in right now.
DS: I am still member of Edenbridge and Thirdmoon (although Thirdmoon lies on ice since ages – simply no time)ML: Actually I was a prostitute and I sold my body to old fancy women for some euros… suddenly I came up with Serious Black and my life changed completely
ML: (laughs). No, I was playing with Emergency Gate and Visions of Atlantis around the world. Worked in the studio producing and recording albums and I booked many tours, festivals and so on. So actually nothing changed… in work 🙂
SoN: Even though you are known to be a german band, only you and the drummer Alex Holzwarth are actually german. There are guys from Greece, Sweden, Austria and Czech Republic. Was that the idea from the begining or it just happened this way? How do you normally work in terms of composition and rehearsals?
ML: In songwriting we communicate a lot per skype, whatsapp, wetransfer etc. but the arrangements, recordings and also some additioal writing we do together in one room. Flights are not so expensive anymore, so this works pretty good.
DS: Rehersals only happen right before a show or tour. For a single show normally one day before. Sometimes not even that… 😉 For a tour we meet up about a week before entering the bus.
SoN: Not just Serious Black was originally conceived in Spain, but after Germany it looks like Spain is the country you have played the most, is that true? Do you receive a specially good response here? What do you like about our country, both in terms of fans and outside of your work as a musician?
DS: You might be right… For me it just happened to be like that. Anyway I love to play here. It’s always kind of a party! Also as a private person I love to do vacation here – so far there is time for vacation.
ML: I agree with Dominik… I like spain and I was countless times in Spain. It’s always something special to come in this beautiful country.
SoN: In September you will start your biggest headlining tour to date, and of course it will take you to Spain again. A couple of years ago you came twice, once supporting Hammerfall together with Orden Ogan and the other opening for Gamma Ray. What do you remember about each of them and how important do you think it is to have toured with such established and loved bands to boost your popularity in those early days of Serious Black? How was the response of the fans back then?
DS: It was simply the best that could have happened to us – it immensely helped to bring us right to where we are now!
ML: The response of the crowd was great! It’s hard to find words cause it was impressive how the fans in Spain react on our music… and we are happy to come back in a few days.
SoN: You also just played the Leyendas del Rock festival. How was it? How does it compare to other festivals in other countries?
DS: Unfortunately there was not the time to breathe the flair of this great festival. We just came there, prepared, did a signing session, played our set and quit. So for me it’s hard to compare. It wouldn’t be fair.
ML: We did a very good show on the festival… even though everything was a little stressing… arrival, 2 hours sleep, then festival, show, sleep and long trip home. We had a lot of stuff to do with the album release and so on, but it was nice and my second time on this festival… let’s see when we come back 🙂
SoN: This autumn the main cities in Spain have a tight concert agenda, with many bands coming, so maybe there is some people that is still thinking if they should come to your show or not. What would you say to convince them not to miss Serious Black’s visit?
DS: It will be our most «explosive» and powerful show so far. And of course the whole package is unique! You would regret if you won’t watch it!
ML: All those people who saw us already know that we are a very good live band, so I am pretty sure they will rock with us again. All the other guys who don’t know us… give yourself a chance to be part of a great metal night!
SoN: You will come with the guys in Herman Frank, My Own Ghost and Stormhammer, in what will be a very solid bill of festive power metal. What do you think they will bring to the tour and what do you like about each of those bands?
ML: For me it’s a big honor that Herman and his guys are our special guest. I saw Herman a long time ago with Victory and with Accept. With Rick I was on tour with Masterplan and Andre I know from Rage, so all in all I think it’s an amazing package, with pure rock. My Own Ghost is a very talented newcomer act… and I am looking forward to see them live 🙂
SoN: If you had to choose only one song from Serious Black to introduce the band to someone that doesn’t know you, which one would you choose and why?
ML: «I Seek no Other Life»!!!!! Because it explains everything!
SoN: And if you could be able to put up a tour of four bands together, being Serious Black one of them, which ones would they be and why? (I know you are tempted to say Herman Frank, Stormhammer and My Own Ghost, but try not to unless this is really really the dream line up for you 😀 )

Siempre me ha encantado escribir y siempre me ha encantado el rock, el metal y muchos más estilos. De hecho, me gustan tantos estilos y tantas bandas que he llegado a pensar que he perdido completamente el criterio, pero es que hay tanta buena música ahí fuera que es imposible no seguirse sorprendiendo día a día.
