Como ya sabéis, este año se vuelve a realizar el festival Gasteiz Calling en Vitoria. En esta edición se ha decidido ampliar a dos días el festival con un precio irrisorio de 54 € + gastos. Las fechas son el viernes 10 y sábado 11 de noviembre de 2017. En el cartel hay grupos para todos los gustos musicales (punk, hardcore, oi, metal, crossover, etc.). Tocarán míticas bandas de todos los géneros como Buzzcocks, Sham 69, Sick Of It All, Madball, Youth Of Today o Municipal Waste, entre otras.
Durante estos meses, Science of Noise desgranará poco a poco el cartel, mediante entrevistas a los grupos, reseñas de discos y noticias. Para empezar Tony Foresta, vocalista de la banda de crossover apocalíptico de Richmond, Municipal Waste, nos ha concedido unos minutos de su atareada agenda para contestar unas preguntillas.
SofN: ¿Cuándo y por qué decidís formar una banda de crossover? ¿Por qué el nombre de Municipal Waste? Cómo fueron los primeros conciertos, ¿alguna anécdota?
Era el año 2000 y realmente no habían muchas bandas nuevas de thrash y crossover actuando por donde vivíamos. Queríamos traer de vuelta la música que amamos y pasar un buen rato haciéndolo. Los primeros espectáculos fueron en casas y eran muy pequeños, pero extremadamente locos. Un montón de ventanas rotas y cerveza derramada.
SofN: ¿Cuáles son tus influencias musicales?
A mí, personalmente, me encanta cualquier cosa desde Gang Starr a Kreator. Creo que mis influencies con esta banda serían cosas como Poison Idea y The Accused. También Agnostic Front, Corrosion Of Conformity y RKL fueron grandes influencias.
SofN: ¿Cómo fue el cambio de pasar de ser una banda no muy conocida y tocar en locales pequeños a hacer giras mundiales, firmar con grandes sellos discográficos, tocar en grandes festivales y ser bastante famosos? ¿Cómo lo lleváis? ¿Os ha afectado?
Todos seguimos siendo los mismos tipos. Solo tenemos que afrontar los golpes de manera diferente. Nunca dejamos que la mierda se nos suba a la cabeza y por supuesto siempre nos aseguramos de que, tanto los fans como nuestros amigos se sientan respetados e involucrados al 100%.
SofN: ¿Nos podéis contar un poco como es el proceso de creación y realización de un disco de Municipal Waste?
Muchos tirones de pelo y largas noches de recolección a través de toneladas de material para conseguir que lo que sientes es correcto. También es muy divertido. Es bueno salir con tus compañeros de banda e intentar crear algo que todos podamos amar y apoyar.
SofN: Aunque vemos que vuestras letras hablan más bien de pasárselo bien, alcohol, zombis mutantes post apocalípticos, etc. también vemos que tenéis una vertiente crítica social/política. ¿Cómo veis el panorama mundial a nivel político/social/económico/ecológico? ¿Qué opináis de Donald Trump y su ascenso a la presidencia de los EEUU?
Donald Trump es un terrible pedazo de racista y sexista de mierda, y está dividiendo nuestra nación drásticamente cada día que él sigue siendo presidente. No solo eso, sino que es una vergüenza para nuestro país y la gente que lo ama. Es un verdadera lata viajar al extranjero y tener que explicar a la gente que no todos los estadounidenses son homófobos e ignorantes, y que hay un montón de seres humanos buenos aquí, como en cualquier otro lugar.
SofN: Acabáis de editar vuestro último álbum que lleva por título Slime and Punishment. Como siempre, otra joya de crossover a todo volumen. ¿Cómo está funcionado a nivel de ventas y cuál es la reacción de vuestros fans al escucharlo? ¿En directo están funcionando bien las nuevas canciones?
Hasta la fecha ha sido el disco más vendido de Municipal Waste, que es una cosa bastante loca ya que somos una banda de que lleva 15 años de trayectoria musical y, por lo general, se supone que en este momento de nuestra carrera vendría el declive de la banda… jajajaja.
SoN: ¿Cómo lleváis el compaginar Municipal Waste con las otras bandas en las que estáis militando actualmente? En concreto, Iron Reagan. ¿Cómo está funcionando?
Es difícil equilibrar las dos bandas. En ambas estamos muy ocupados, pero he estado organizándome de la mejor manera posible para dividir el tiempo entre ambas bandas para así poder mantener felices a los fans y a mis compañeros de las dos bandas…. jajajaja.
SofN: ¿Qué opináis sobre la nueva generación de bandas que realizan thrash metal / crossover / HCpunk? ¿Cómo ves el futuro?
Me encantan. Creo que el futuro puede ser realmente genial. Solo espero que traten de contribuir al género en lugar de simplemente intentar imitar cualquier banda que les guste. ¡Crea tu propia música y disfruta haciéndolo!
SofN: Para una nueva sección que estamos creando sobre «Food & Rock». ¿Qué tipo de comida te gusta más?
Me gustan las patatas fritas. Porque parece que me gusta estar gordo… jajajaja.
SofN: En noviembre vendréis a tocar al Gasteiz Calling en Vitoria (España). ¿Nos puedes avanzar alguna sorpresa del setlist y del merch?
Si te dijera lo que vamos a hacer, ya no sería una sorpresa, ¿no?
SofN: Después de trabajar con Earache Records durante 3 discos, ¿cómo es que en estos dos últimos discos habéis cambiado a Nuclear Blast? ¿Algún problema?
Nuclear Blast es un millón de veces mejor que Earache. Vamos a dejarlo ahí…
SofN: Vemos que, tanto en vuestros directos como en vuestros videoclips, se respira unidad, respeto, diversión y muy buen ambiente. Como DRI hizo bastantes años atrás, ahora Municipal Waste lo habéis vuelto a conseguir uniendo punks, skins, hardcores, metaleros en un mismo espectáculo para disfrutar de un buen show. ¿Habéis tenido algún problema con los puristas de cada género? ¿Alguna discusión?
Acabamos de realizar unos shows con DRI hace un par de noches, aquí en Richmond. Grandes amigos y chicos maravillosos. Siempre les hemos amado y hemos sido influenciados por su mensaje. Hay demasiada división en la escena de metal; tendríamos que empezar a ver a mucha más gente poniendo sus gustos y diferencias a un lado, y empezar a aprender a relajarse y disfrutar un poco más. Solo estás una vez en este planeta, deja de joder!

La falta de sueño es lo peor. Lo mejor es conocer un montón de personas nuevas e interesantes de todo el mundo. La comida también … y el alcohol.

SofN: When and why do you decide to form a crossover band? And why the name of Municipal Waste? How did the first concert go, any anecdotes?
It was the year 2000 and there wasn’t really a lot of new thrash and crossover bands happening where we lived. We wanted to bring back the music we love and have a good time doing it. The first shows were in houses and were very small but extreemly crazy. Lots of broken windows and spilled beer.
SofN: What are your musical influences?
Me personally I love anything from Gang Starr to Kreator. I think for me with this band it would be stuff like Poison Idea and The Accused. Also Agnostic Front, COC and RKL were big influences as well.
SofN: How was the changefrom being a not very well-known band and playing in small clubs to doing world tours, signing with big labels, playing in big festivals and being quite famous? Has this affected you?
We’re all still the same dudes. We just have to roll with the punches differently. We never let shit get to our heads and always make sure that the fans and friends are 100% respected and involved.
SofN: Can you tell us a bit about the process of creation of a Municipal Waste record?
Its a lot of pulling your own hair and long nights of nit picking through tons of material to get what you feel is right. It’s also a lot of fun too. It’s good to hang out with your bandmates and try to create something that we all can love and get behind.
SoN: Although we see that your lyrics speak of having fun, alcohol or post-apocalyptic mutant zombies, we also see that you have a critical social / political side. How do you see the world panorama at the political / social / economic / ecological level? What do you think of Donald Trump and his raise to the US presidency?
Donald Trump is an awful racist and sexist piece of shit and is dividing our nation drastically each and every day that he remains president. Not only that but he is an embarrassment to our country and the people who love it. It’s a real bummer traveling abroad and having to explain to people that not all Americans are ignorant homophobes and that there are a lot of good humans here just like everywhere else.
SofN: You have just published your last album titled «Slime and Punishment». Like usual another crossover jewel at full blast. How is it working in terms of sales what has been the reaction of the fans? Are the new songs working well?
It’s been our best selling record to date which pretty crazy since we’ve been a band for 15 years and usually you are supposed to go down hill by this point now haha.
SofN: How are you combining Municipal Waste with the other bands that you are currently in, specifically Iron Reagan?
It’s tough to balance the 2 bands. Both are very busy but I’ve been doing my best to split time up between both bands to be able to keep the fans and my band mates happy. Haha
SofN: What do you think about the new generation of Thrash Metal / Crossover / Hcpunk bands? Has the Thrash Metal / Crossover been reborn? How do you see the future?
I love it. I think the future can be really cool. I just hope they try to contribute to the genre rather than just trying to impersonate whatever band they think is cool. Do your own thing and have a blast doing it!
SofN: For a new section that we are creating about Food & Rock, could you tell us what kind of food you like best? Do you like to cooking? What kind of food do you usually order when you are on tour?
I like French Fries. Because I like being fat apparently. Haha
SoN: In November you will come to play at the Festival Gasteiz Calling in Vitoria (Spain). Can you tell us any surprise in the setlist and in the Merch?
Now it wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you would it?
SofN: After working with Earache for 3 records, why did you move to Nuclear Blast for these two last records? Any problem with your previous label?
Nuclear Blast is a million times better than Earache. I’ll just leave it at that.
SofN: We see that both your live shows and your video clips show unity, respect, fun and a very good realtionship between you all. As DRI did quite a few years ago, you are also able to bring together punks, skins, hardcore and metal fans in a single show. Have you had any problems with the purists of each kind of music? Any discussions or fights?
We just hung out with DRI a couple nights ago here in Richmond. Great friends of ours and wonderful guys. We always loved and have been influenced by their message. Theres too much division in the metal scene and we need to see a lot more people putting there tastes and differences aside and start learning to relax and enjoy themselves a bit more. Your only on this planet once, fuck shit up!

The lack of sleep is the worst. The best is meeting all of the new and interesting people everywhere. The food too…and alcohol.
